When Daniel Okrent relates the story of the first inning of the 1919 Black Sox/Reds World Series, he says the fix began with the first pitch. However, the game was played in Cincinnati, so the White Sox actually hit first. Then in the bottom of the first, Ed Ciccotte actually threw a strike on the first pitch. It was with the second pitch that he hit Morrie Rath in between the shoulder blades; hitting the first batter was the sign to the gamblers that the fix was in.
