Before bedtime, granddad tells the two girls a story, and in the weeks before December 6 he doesn't read from a book but recounts the experiences of their relative Bart, a good boy who is big enough to go out alone but still gets presents from St. Nicholas, and visits the castle where he stays between his arrival from Spain and his return after distributing presents to all good kids on his liturgical feast day, December 6. Today Bart gets the answer to the question what the Saint's horse is called: Slecht Weer Vandaag, Dutch for 'Lousy Weather Today', and even how that weird name got chosen.

Bart stays in the castle, preparing soup most ineptly -uncleaned vegetables mixed with sweets- while the Saint and Black Pete check their roofs map and the state of the roofs above good kids' homes. The generous pair finds a bag full of stolen goods and catches the burglar red-handed, so Sinterklaas 'arrests' him, while Zwarte Piet kicks his 'bad boy' backside all the way to the castle. After promising to better his presently criminal life, he exchanges complaints about the worsening state of roofs with the Saint, is let off and says he'll repair the roofs, using a stolen -oops, borrowed- bike, being offered Bart's.
