- Tonight, for the first time ever on Kitchen Nightmares, Gordon takes on a nightmare restaurant abroad. La Parra de Burriana is an ex-pat restaurant in Nerja on Spain's Costa del Sol. Nestling among the cafes lining the seafront offering all-day English breakfast and chips, La Parra is the brainchild of twenty-six-year-old ex-nightclub manager Laurence. He set himself up in business eighteen months ago with a loan from his dad and, although he's not an experienced chef, mans the kitchen on his own, determined to offer something better than chips to his largely British clientele.—Anonymous
- Welcome to La Parra de Burriana in Nerja, Costa del Sol, Spain. 26 year old Laurence Davy used to be a manager for some nightclubs in the UK and thought that he could offer the brits in spain something different than what they are used to.. after 18 months however the restaurant is going down fast. Prawns in chocolate sauce and kebabs that are hanging from a hook "swinging like donkey dicks infront of the customers" is downright taking the piss Gordon says. ´102 000,- is Laurence's debt so far and things are about to get worse.. When Gordon tries the food he checks the menu and ofcourse the menu is huge from burgers to chinese... The wow-factor dish (kebab)is brutally slaughtered by Gordon. The crema Catalana is burnt, runny and a disgrace for cooking all together. The novelty dishes are designed to turn heads but all its done for Gordon is turn his stomach :)
When confronting the kitchen about his dining experience Gordon loses his temper and is about to throw in the towel on the entire project. Gordon comes back the day after to see how they work... when inspecting the terrace grill he questions the fact that 10 kebabs are pretty much poached before they are cooked and aren't even ordered.. in other words they spend hours on this grill. Norm the grill chef then also admits openly that he reuses the chicken kebabs, that not get sold, the day after.. Gordon gives him a clear warning about this nonsense..
In the evening Norm shows Gordon that there is no lighting and has to use the clockwork torch. "Gordon: It doesn't get more Mickey Mouse then this". Manager Alex is not any better and is downright lazy and doesn't now how to run a restaurant. Laurance has such a huge meny that he has done the ultimate lazy move and cooks everything on the plauncher grill while deepfrying the vegetables..
When Gordon returns the morning after on day three he has brought washing gear and a bucket. The place needs a big washing down, he even finds dog shit in the dining area.. If dog shit goes unnoticed then it is no surprise that the kitchen is dripping in grease..
Last February Laurance putt on a dinner for a local donkey sanctuary charity. The locals where charged £ 30,- a head and rumour has it that Laurance made a complete ass of it. The food was overcooked, dry & tasteless. The menu was chickenliver parfait which was made in the morning so had no time to sett. A chicken dish wrapped in Serano ham that had been too long in the oven that it had become as dry as cardboard. Despite of all this Laurance charged them for the meal. Gordon is not surprised that they haven't been back. He explains that the locals stand for 80% of the turnover in the off-season, so don't piss off the locals, you cannot survive without them. Gordon visits the sanctuary to get their side of the story..It becomes clear however that Laurence only told Gordon half the truth.. Gordon pleas with them to give the restaurant one more chance.
He gives Laurence and Alex a taste of his own medicine by serving them amongs others a chocolate and prawn smoothie blindfolded. He convinces them that the combinations just don't work. And let prawns taste like prawns... Now the menu has to be rewritten..Laurence however will not accept this without a fight. Its time for Gordon to prove his point. Laurence is too stubborn too realise when he has to change over to Gordon's menu during the service and of course changes to late and when confronted by Gordon after Service he then tries to blame Gordon for it.. Gordon is furious and leaves..
The next day Gordon returns and finds out that there had been a break-inn and nearly £4000,- is gone. Laurence has to realise that Gordon is here to help but he has to realise it here and now. A test for trust and listening, and growing a pair of bullocks, is therefore devised :) The test seems to work. Now Gordon shows him how to cook properly and proves him wrong again. He finally accepts defeat and opens his ears and eyes. The old menues get burnt up and a new beginning is here.
Alex however cocks up everything by getting gready and double booking guests without any room for mistakes. Norm gets put in the kitchen and pot washer Tom gets put behind the grill. This evening the donkey sanctuary is here for dinner tonight and the pressure on Laurence is building... they manage to finish service but just by the hairs on their neck. When Gordon leaves he is doubtfull that after he leaves things will be in order.
Upon his return the restaurant a couple of months later, Gordon sees that his efforts have not been in vain, the restaurant is actually making a turnover and Laurence has managed to pay off quite a bit on his debts.
