First, the criminally underseen babysitter thriller Emelie, a taut thriller that will definitely surprise many of you.
I was blown away by Michael Thelin‘s debut feature which is highlighted by star Sarah Bolger, who delivers a chilling performance that would make any parent check twice before hiring a new babysitter.
In the film… “After their regular babysitter Maggie can’t make it, the Thompson family turns to her friend Anna to supervise their children while the parents celebrate their anniversary. Fabrício Bittar’s horror-comedy tells of four YouTubers with expertise in paranormal activity who attempt to tackle the mystery of a ghost that haunts a high school bathroom. This film is batshit insane.
The film is being sold in the spirit of Peter Jackson’s earliest work, “An exercise in hilariously bad taste, featuring gratuitous sex, violence, profanity and one seriously pissed-off ghost.”

A young couple find themselves face to face with a terrifying evil when they venture into the heart of Bigfoot country in Willow Creek, director Bobcat Goldthwait’s unique spin on the horror genre.
“Looking to make a splash with his research videos into the existence of Bigfoot, Jim (Bryce Johnson) and his skeptical girlfriend Kelly (Alexie Gilmore) take a camping trip to the mountains surrounding Willow Creek, California, a small town where famous footage of the legendary Sasquatch was filmed decades earlier. Jim believes Bigfoot exists and is intent on finding the very spot where the huge, hairy, man-like creature supposedly strode.
But before long, Jim and Kelly are lost in the woods and discover that someone – or something – is stalking them. With each passing night bringing unknowable danger, the two must...

Ever since their breakout indie The Deeper You Dig lit up the festival circuit in 2019, the Adams family have proven something of a horror genre sideshow for travelling fans; a one-of-a-kind mother-father-daughter filmmaking team who write, direct and star together in what is quickly becoming an impressively unusual oeuvre. Slickly, cheaply made spins on old-school genre mainstays with a fascinatingly personal angle. And their depression-era road movie Where the Devil Roams is no different – a gorgeously minimalist, micro-budget marvel of a family-driven horror.
In fact, the Adams’ latest might actually be at its most impressive when it shuns its bigger crowds and more elaborate dressing, and just leans into its absolute essentials. That is, its core unit; an unusual family band, riding across rural America, on the coattails of a travelling horror show. The team themselves – father John, daughter Zelda, and mother Toby Poser – are a uniquely tight fit as...

The Adams Family have done it again! The filmmaking team, made up of father John Adams, mother Toby Poser and daughters Zelda and Lulu, have been writing, directing, producing and starring in their own independent productions for a little over a decade, and have crafted festival favorites including The Deeper You Dig and Hellbender. Last week, at the Fantasia Film Festival, they premiered their most ambitious project yet, Where the Devil Roams, a supernatural horror set in Depression-era America.
Hard times have fallen upon a small carnival. Attendance is at an all-time low, and there's not enough nickels to go around to feed the sideshow acts. Among them are the performing trio, Maggie (Toby Poser), Seven (John Adams) and Eve (Zelda Adams), who do a song and dance routine that hardly draws a crowd. Stealing their spectators is Mr. Tibbs, a magician who slices off his fingers one by one with rusty scissors,...

Fox Corp.’s Tubi, its free, ad-supported streaming TV service, has pounced on two high-profile Fantasia titles, led by “Where the Devil Roams,” the Adams family’s follow-up to “Hellbender,” Rotten Tomatoes No. 1 movie on its Top 10 of best-rated horror films of 2022, just besting Eskil Vogt’s “The Innocents.”

It’s July, so you know what that means… Fantasia International Film Festival time! Kicking off our Summer of film festival coverage, Fantasia is Always packed with a vast variety of films, from action to horror, drama to comedy, the festival covers the gamut of genres and offers films that [I think] no other festival does. With that in mind, here are five of my “must-see” picks from this year’s line-up.
Blackout – Genre veteran Larry Fessenden goes back behind the camera for another genre film following the likes of Wendigo, The Last Winter and Beneath. This time around Fessenden brings us the tale of a painter (Alex Hurt) who, convinced he is a werewolf, creates chaos in a small town at each full moon. Suitable Flesh – Director Joe Lynch returns with his first feature after a 4-year absence to helm Suitable Flesh, which not only stars Scream Queen Barbara Crampton but comes from writer Dennis Paoli,...

Fresh, raw and bewitching indie folk horror Hellbender will grip fans with a story that has real bite, promising one hell of a ride. As unnerving and gruesome as it is beautiful and enticing, this captivating, unsettling and hellish feature will push audiences to the brink. Written and directed by genre trailblazers, the Adams Family, the film is certified fresh with a 97 score on Rotten Tomatoes. The sixth feature from the family collective who write, direct, produce, score, edit and act in all of their films, Hellbender had its world premiere at Fantasia International Film Festival 2021, where it garnered two wins and a nomination for Best Actress, Best Motion Picture Score and Best Film, respectively.

In his latest podcast/interview, host and screenwriter Stuart Wright talks with the hardest working family in genre cinema today – the Adams Family. They write, shoot, star and post-produce all their work. They are Toby Poser (mum), John Adams (dad), Lulu Adams (eldest) and Zelda Adams. Hellbender is their sixth film made together; their second genre film after the surprise (to the unsuspecting horror world) hit The Deeper You Dig (2019).

Teenager Izzy (Zelda Adams) lives a lonely life with her mother (Toby Poser), their house isolated deep in the Catskill Mountains. That scenic seclusion is no accident. Her mother has gone through enormous efforts to keep Izzy largely away from people since she was five. For her own protection, and perhaps for that of others. They spend their days being each others’ best friends, teaching one another and making music in their two-piece rock band, H6llb6nd6r. As Izzy begins to grow more into herself, she starts venturing into town, spending time with other people, and a sharp thirst for deeper knowledge is stirred. Knowledge of self, and also of her family’s mysterious history… with witchcraft.

They clearly didn't have enough to do with all of those jobs, so they also star in the film. No one really needs sleep, do they? Plus, after having watched this clip, I'm not going to sleep either.
This is the sixth feature from Wonder Wheel Productions, which was founded by Poser and Adams and...

As an accused witch is lifted into the air by rope in the hands of three women, we anticipate the worst. There’s no choice when we already know what the latest DIY-horror from the Adams Family is about. So if hanging as a test for witchcraft means the victim remains alive, what comes next? Does she rise even higher before decimating those who dared to think they could destroy her? Does the fact that everyone watching being women mean they too are witches readying to finish the job? Even when it all eventually ends in a ball of flame and burning flesh, the punk-rock segue ushering in the present leaves the consequences uncertain.
Hellbender begins in the woods of an unknown past and continues there much, much later. Rather than a coven, we meet a duo with black eye paint thrashing drums and bass. Izzy (Zelda Adams) is having...

A clip from Hellbender arrived last night, you can check it out below. In the clip Izzy has made friends with Lulu and they have gathered at the pool of Lulu's home with a couple of her friends. In 2019, a family of filmmakers—John Adams, Toby Poser, and Zelda Adams—burst onto the scene with The Deeper You Dig, which premiered at that year’s Fantasia Film Festival. Now, they have recently completed another indie horror project, Hellbender, which just celebrated its world premiere at the this year’s Fantasia as well, a wholly impressive feat. A badass blend of witchy horror and family drama, Hellbender stars Toby Poser and Zelda Adams as two women living in isolation, harboring a dark and powerful secret that threatens to tear them apart.
Recently, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with these three incredibly talented filmmakers and during the interview, the trio discussed the inspiration behind Hellbender, the joy they feel while working on films together, showcasing their killer music skills, and more.
Hellbender was recently acquired by Shudder and will make its debut on the platform sometime in 2022.

“Parasite” is an often-brutal examination of wealth inequality, and yet its Best Picture win still counts as one of the few universally uplifting moments that 2020 had to offer. This Blu-ray release from The Criterion Collection arrives fully-loaded with extras, including director Bong Joon Ho’s black-and-white rendering of the film — anything but an afterthought, it’s a version that he and cinematographer Kyung-pyo Hong had in mind all along — commentaries, interviews, and a new essay from onetime TheWrap film critic Inkoo Kang.

A true success story of outsider cinematic art, The Deeper You Dig from The Adams Family is now on Blu-ray following a successful festival run. I reviewed the film as it premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival back in 2018, and was - and remain - very impressed with what it manages to accomplish with a very small budget and tight knit cast and crew consisting of Mother-Father-Daughter team, Toby Poser, John Adams, and Zelda Adams: The film explores grief in a novel way... With the help some very effective camera work from John and Zelda Adams and John's low key, but rousing score, the film's technical aspects are on par with a much larger production, and in very few instances does it feel like...

Husband and wife team, John Adams and Toby Poser co-write and co-direct once again this horror title that, with the synopsis I read before watching, sounded really intriguing to me. The idea of a roadside accident that causes the line between the living and the dead to collapse in the existence of a stranger and a mother and daughter, was curious to me.
The Deeper you Dig stars Adams and Poser in the roles of Kurt and Ivy respectively, and their daughter, Zelda Adams as Ivy’s daughter in the film, Echo. It’s a family project in every sense of the term, both in front of the camera and behind it. The page and pen, the camera, the cutting room and the directors chair, not to mention in the scenes as the performers themselves.

Ivy and Echo are not your typical mother-daughter team. Ivy, once an intuitive psychic, makes an easy buck as a bogus tarot card reader; 14-year-old Echo likes old-timey music, hunting, and black lipstick. When reclusive Kurt moves down the road to restore an abandoned farmhouse, an accident leads to Echo’s murder, and suddenly three lives collide in mysterious and wicked ways. Kurt assumes he can hide his secret under the ground. But Echo burrows into his head until he can feel her in his bones. As she haunts his every move, trying to reach her mother from beyond, Ivy must dig deep to see the...

It’s funny where the mind can go when you only know a few details at first. That John Adams and Toby Poser’s latest family-fueled film The Deeper You Dig is horror was enough to convince me that a line spoken by Ivy’s (Poser) daughter Echo about going hunting meant their game was humans. Was it a wild leap of my imagination? Sure. But here’s a woman dabbling in the occult who tells her goth kid that she must meet with a client who’s hired her to channel a dead husband. They possess a very frank relationship with an icy disposition and could have easily been blood-hungry ghouls in a supernatural creature feature had Poser and Adams wanted. Spoiler: they didn’t.
Things are more dramatic and nuanced than that—a necessity considering the trio’s minimal budget and do-it-yourself impulses. Mom and daughter would have...

Stars: John Adams, Toby Poser, Zelda Adams, Izzy Figueredo | Written and Directed by John Adams, Toby Poser

Expectations are generally best kept low for an enterprise like “The Deeper You Dig,” which was crafted almost entirely by the members of an upstate New York family who’ve made several under-the-radar indie features before. But this latest from marital duo Toby Poser and John Adams is neither amateurish nor self-indulgent, even if it does have other flaws. Instead, it’s a nicely economical tale of supernatural vengeance that benefits from its small scale and lived-in atmospherics. The result may be a little modest for significant commercial breakout, but is sure to win over some discerning horror fans, particularly elsewhere along the genre-fest circuit following its opening-night Fantasia slot.
Living on the outskirts of a small town is Ivy Allen (Poser), who supports Goth-styled 14-year-old daughter Echo (Zelda Adams) by working as a tarot-reading fake psychic. The teen’s father is nowhere in sight, and does not appear to be missed.
