- The Untamed is a fantasy story set in ancient China about two young paladins who are completely opposite in character. In flashbacks we see them as antagonistic class mates. One is a charming bad boy who can't abide by the rules. The other is the serene and shining example of wuxia manhood. Their relationship is marked by teasing and annoying incidents untill they find themselves entangled in a bloody power struggle between the clans. They stick together untill bad boy becomes an infamous demonologist, and he gets hunted down by all clans. The 'good one' is forced to get in line with his clan, unable to save his friend from a tragical death. For mysterious reasons the bad boy returns 16 years later, apparently unharmed. They reunite, joining forces to solve the mystery behind the evil events in their past. Both discover that people aren't always what they seem, including themselves.
- When Wei Wuxian came back to life 16 years later, because Mo Xuan Yu had successfully casted a spell and brought his spirit back, the story went back to the past revealing the series of events that had led to his death.
Back at the time when Wei Wuxian was a teenager and had visited the Gusu sect to receive training, he met his soulmate Lan Wangji, the righteous, quiet natured man born of a noble family. With his kind of temperament Lan Wangji never knew how to make friends until the free spirited, lively Wei Wuxian entered his life. A great bond of faith and affection started developing between the two. Wei Wuxian went back to his sect after finishing his trainings and a series of disastrous events made him sacrifice his golden core to save the life of his brother. The spiritually weak Wei Wuxian was tortured and thrown into the Burial grounds from where he returned after some months but as a man who had started practicing demonic cultivation. Lan Wangji tried to persuade him to give up on such ways of cultivating his spirit but all in vain. Wei Wuxian lost his reputation and turned into an ostracized outcast overnight. Only Lan Wangji stood by him till the last, trying every possible measure to keep him from sinking to the bottom. With Wei Wuxian's sister's death during the night-less city fight, the defeated distressed man let himself fall off the cliff and Lan Wangji could not save him.
Back to the present time, though Wei Wuxian always covered his face behind a mask to hide his identity from the world but Lan Wangji still recognised his soulmate at the first glance, whose death he had been mourning over for so many years. Now the relationship between the two deepened with every passing day that they spend in each other's company with Lan Wangji standing as a pillar against every blow that came Wei Wuxian's way and Wei Wuxian cherishing the most trustworthy bond of love that was always there in his support. Both of them together solved the mysteries of the murders that had happened recently and proved Wei Wuxian's true conscience to the people by finding out the person who had defamed Wei Wuxian 16 years ago by planting seeds of misunderstanding in the minds of everyone and had turned them against him.
