Predictable Yet Entertaining
HollisterNights20 June 2008
Okay, DO NOT get me wrong. I love the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato to death but honestly, it feels like this film is missing something. I know this is supposed to be a Disney Movie and that it has been endlessly compared to High School Musical but I have to say that... High School Musical carries an element of magic that is missing from Camp Rock.

The songs are all catchy and entertaining and unlike the unpredictability of a musical, when the characters sings: It makes complete sense. The acting is mediocre, there were points where the actors delivered completely while in others, their ability comes into question.

The movie itself was relatively interesting and kept me vaguely hanging, even though there were times where I just got up and walked around (got food and refreshments). Shane Gray is a convincing jerk. Overall, you can see where the movie was headed from the moment it started. But it carries you through the movie and you believe that there is such a camp out there (which is something we all wish).

I NEVER said that the movie was bad, just predictable and half-hearted. But no matter what, THERE IS SOMETHING TO ENJOY.

Even though I was jealous of Demi Lovato when Joe Jonas sang to her lakeside. & I had to pause my DVR when he got out of the lake because well... look at him.

Watch the movie and you'll find something you'll like but don't come in expecting Oscar standards.

Doesn't Rock Completely, but Not So Disappointing.
adidasplayya21 June 2008
Face it, the majority of viewers were Jonas Brother fans. Nothing wrong with that at all, in fact, it was probably the movie's selling point.

However... The script was poorly written. Unrealistic moments and scenes are embedded throughout the movie, Camp Rock sitting at the top of them all. The plot was VERY predictable, and lines seemed forced and very, well. PLOTTED. haha. The Jonas Brothers made their appearance, as promised, but don't expect any acting close to Zac Efron's or Shia LaBeouf's. Joe Jonas, playing the main protagonist, is not meant to be an actor. His voice is mediocre and sounds nicer with backup vocals and guitar. Nick Jonas seemed robotic (why were his swim trunks so short?) but Kevin Jonas played a pleasing and likable airhead.

Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Duff and Shia LaBeouf have left Disney. Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens are on the way out. Disney has come to realize that they can't keep depending on the JoBros and Hannah/Miley Cyrus to reel in the cash. So, they introduced a new, but not-as-cute as Hilary Duff face: Demi Lovato. Okay, she's not edgy and charismatic like La Lohan, not NEARLY as exotic as Hudgens, and not as experienced and cheeky as Cyrus, but hey! She did okay. Her voice is good enough to be unforgotten, but also be hard to remember. I'm happy they didn't use her best friend, Selena Gomez, who is another tool in Disney's attempts to recreate lovable shows that don't come close to Lizzie McGuire or Even Stevens.

Anyways, the music's simple, sounds familiar, but is fairly pleasing. The acting (including MORE not as talented faces)is mediocre and slightly painful at times. (Excluding Alyson Stoner, who was probably the best) I don't recommend watching the movie more than twice, because by then, you'll know each line, each verse, and each forced laugh, and fake diss. This doesn't rock completely, but it's not so disappointing either. :)

Has things to say but they lie underneath a lot of cheesy dull acting. Great music and choreography though!
quiqueperezsoler10 April 2020
I basically consider it a guilty pleasure as with High School Musical and the rest of Disney Channel Original Movies, I grew up with it. These definitely would be dispensable if not for having some themes and good messages for kids, teens and even young adults in some occasions. Although most of these repeat themselves a bit, themes like be who you are no matter what society expects or its norms, don't lie to your friends, don't opt for the easy way out or don't make the more money-oriented-but-hated decision.

Personally I'm a sucker for breaking-the-norms feel-good movies like these. At times the dull and badly acted scenes might drag a bit but when they break into song or at the time of conveying the message it's loud and clear, and fun!

What saves this movie is definitely the music. And also I can't condemn it because it sort of has a place in my heart and my memories. Unfortunately and contrary to other childhood movie revisits I have recently done, it doesn't warm my heart as much as others have like Annie 1999 and High School Musical. I learned a lot with it when I was a kid and I recommend it for kids to watch, it's timeless.

Bland and Predictable - Doesn't measure up to High School Musical
itsmrhippo22 June 2008
Insert sadface here. This rockin' was supposed to be so much more than it lead on, but it really failed to deliver. I'm quite sad to say that Camp Rock may not be a failure to Jonas Brothers fans and teenage girls, though compared to other Disney Channel Movies, it just does not deliver.

The story starts off with Michie Torres, a girl that desperately wants to attend a Rock and Roll camp, and subplots Joe Jonas being throw back into his old stomping grounds before he became the hotshot that he is in Connect 3.

Right in, they establish the characters of Michie as the shy girl, and the rather rude Shane Gray. It seems that cliché character development only kicks in after a few scenes, for little to no reason at all. The work done by the actors was relatively decent, with a few small exceptions. However, having to deal with a horrible script like Camp Rock, is a task in it's on. The film tries to create conflict with an enemy that nobody really cares about, or has any ill feelings for. The mark of good character development is to love your enemy. Perhaps Meaghan Jette Martin had a scene or two that was cut that really showed us that she had such feelings for her family.

Camp Rock has all your normal stereotypical Disney children in it. Your hero(in), the hero's sidekick, other friends introduced for comedic value, the hero's enemy, and the enemies cronies. Disney does not fail to deliver an overdone plot of being ashamed of your family and how lying is bad. Blah blah blah... Girl lies, gets out casted, expresses remorse and sticks up for herself. Haven't seen this stuff in a Disney movie before! Nope, not me! Lastly, the music. Though it is somewhat strange that a rock star would be a hip hop teacher at a rock and roll camp, I found that it worked for the most part. Most of the songs are forgettable at best until the finale, as many musicals are. Though, these select songs make this movie re watchable and marketable for Disney. It will probably launch *a* career...

I'm quite sure it's got to be just a big Jonas Brothers promotional video. I'm sure the funds raked in for this film will also be astronomical much like its musical counterpart, High School Musical.

All in all, the story is boring and forgettable, but some of the songs you'll be singing to your self after seeing the film once or twice (or perhaps 20 or so, if you know Disney Channel). Watch this once, definitely, to see if it's your cup of tea. But it didn't quite do it for me the way HSM did it for the rest of the world.

A timeless classic..
Callum52524 September 2014
First off just let me say this is one of the best films I have ever seen!

Camp Rock delivers a great story line along with some clever humour. The songs on it are great.

Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato (the star of the show) were great together. I thought they were what made this film work so well.

Now, Demi Lovato. She was superb in this film. Her singing was great and her acting comparable to that of Robert De Niro in his prime.

One thing I will say is ignore the other reviews which slate this film. I am not a great fan of this particular genre but this was great.

I regularly re-watch this movie as it is that good, I highly recommend it.

This is real, this is me...

Nice Try
wtf-seriously15 July 2008
I decided to watch this when I was bored one night, being a 20 year old female college student I was obviously not the chief demographic, but I enjoyed High School Musical enough, so I thought I would give it a shot.

The only emotion this movie invoked was the urge to slap the blonde, who was wonderfully venomous and probably was my favorite character in the movie because she at least brought some reaction out of me. The music was incredibly average, also I was disappointed that Alyson Stoner didn't get to dance more, she's wonderful.

So at the end of the movie I was even more bored than when I started, annoyed by Demi Lovato's smile, and feeling let down. Obviously younger audiences will love the Jonas Brothers and the inspiring plot, but the terrible execution of an okay plot pretty much killed the movie for me.

let's not hate
SnoopyStyle9 September 2018
Mitchie Torres (Demi Lovato) is desperate to attend the prestigious Camp Rock. She is overjoyed when her mother gets a discount by working in the kitchen. She is befriended by Caitlyn Geller (Alyson Stoner) but she abandons her to be a follower of snooty selfish Tess (Meaghan Martin) who has a famous mother. Like everyone else, she falls for celebrity counselor Shane Gray (Joe Jonas) who is trying to rehab his damaged public reputation. He overhears her singing and falls for her without actually seeing her or knowing her identity. All the while, she is hiding her poor kitchen help background from all the other kids.

Demi Lovato is a thing. The Jonas Brothers is a thing. I was never into that thing. I'm not a hater. That's not my thing either. It's nice to see the origins of these things. Everybody has the energetic sincerity. These young performers have good charisma. The story is a mash of various underdog, Cinderella, musical things. It's all very sincere and appealing in that try-hard way. It was supposed to be the next High School Musical and it faltered as that. The everybody gets along happy ending is too saccharine and it devolves into a glee club grind. Nevertheless, let's not be haters.

Worst DCOM I've Ever Seen
divatude200722 June 2008
I was overloaded with promos for this movie, so I was apprehensive about watching it. I should have followed my gut. I would have given this movie a "1" but I changed it to a two because I liked one scene near the end. I am a big Disney fan but I thought the characters in this were way too over the top - especially Tess. I was very disappointed with the dancing, most of the singing and a lot of the acting. I never really Liked Demi on "As the Bell Rings", Mitchie was just as one dimensional. Alyson Stoner - absolutely loved her. I haven't seen anything of hers that I haven't liked. The really big thing is - why does Disney always have to have a "idiot" character? How many people do you know in real life who are actually extremely dingy? Overall, a waste of two hours of my time.

Disappointing...
short_dancer314 July 2008
I recently watched "Camp Rock" quite frankly because I was bored and I like to keep the T.V. on when I read. I am out of the age range that Disney tries to appeal to (a.k.a. preteens) but I figured "what the heck? let's try to get back in touch with the good old days".

First off, I found none of the songs really catchy and the choreography not quite what it could've and should've been (this from a dancer's POV, by the way). The ending song was especially cheesy and useless and should've been thrown out altogether. The ending choreography was just repetition and boring.

Secondly, the acting on the part of the lead girl, Lovato, was good for Disney Channel and she could probably be seen in more Disney movies to come. Because we all know that pretty much no Disney Channel actors ever leave the Big D. The Jonas Brothers aren't probably the greatest actors in the world and there certainly is no harm in an acting class (or two.... or three...).

And lastly, the plot has been done so many times (not only Disney is guilty of this either) that it was really predictable and boring and I found myself rolling my eyes. Girl likes boy, but oh no! a girl who wants the spotlight! And so on and so forth.

I'm sure many teenyboppers who love The Jonas Brothers, hoping for a resurrection of HSM will love this movie and have their rooms decked out in HSM and "Camp Rock" but for the rest of us.... probably not worth the time.

Tries to excel High School Musical but doesn't come close.
departed0721 June 2008
"Camp Rock" is the latest addition of the Disney Channel Original Movies to hit the small screen where like the High School Musical films and The Cheetah Girls series, it's all about young people and music. There was so much hype from the Disney Channel along with every magazine publication from People Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, and all the teen magazines we read (J-14, Popstar, BOP) that once the actual event got here, it felt like a total bummer.

The film is about a young girl name Mitchie Torres (Demi Lovato of Disney's "As the Bell Rings"), a young girl who has ambitious of going to a prestigious music camp called Camp Rock where her dreams is to be a singer and get away from her boring life. It sucks since her parents have plans for the summer where Mitchie's father runs a store business while her mother (Maria Canals Barrara of "Wizards of Waverly Place") runs a catering business. Lucky for her, after fate steps in, that Mitchie's mother gets to cater for Camp Rock leaving the aspiring singer a free ride as long as she helps in the kitchen.

Another character in the film is Shane Gray (Joe Jonas) where his cocky attitude leads him for entertainment fodder. After too much publication, Shane's punishment is to work at the Camp Rock led by his uncle where he doesn't want to be around a bunch of kids while his brothers (played by Kevin and Nick) get the last laugh.

While in the camp, Mitchie fits in by lying to a bunch of kids saying she's from a rich family and coming up with various ways to keep her cool and befriending people from all sides from a techno-geek played by Alyson Stoner to mean girl bitch Meaghan Jette Martin and her ditzy posse played by Jasmine Richards (Naturally Sadie) and Anna Maria Perez de Tagle (Hannah Montana). During the film, Mitchie shows her musical side where she doesn't know that Shane is hearing behind the cabin and yet leaves before the rock star has the opportunity to find out who the singer is.

All-in-all, "Camp Rock" isn't what I thought it was going to be. I thought it felt more like a Jonas Brothers vehicle prior to their success where after a couple of hits, a blockbuster album, a bunch of tours and an upcoming TV show (J.O.N.A.S.), what else is there to show their popularity? Despite that people were cheering for Mitchie and Shane to get together, I didn't feel any connection between them at all unlike Troy and Gabriella from the first High School Musical. However, I give my points to some of the actors from Demi Lovato, Meaghan Jette Martin and Jasmine Richards who convinced me that despite doing TV work, there's stardom in the making for these kids.

Overall, not worth the hype.

Camp Rock Sucks
cute_dark_chi2 July 2008
People who predicted this movie would be better than high school musical WERE WRONG. They were really wrong. In fact, they were so wrong, they should never be able predict anything in their natural-born lives again. Yep, it was that bad.

DisneyChannel said it was a musical. The movie was an awful attempt at being what it was supposed to be. Sure, they were a few (crappy) songs and dance moves throughout Camp Rock, but it didn't have the same concept as a musical! It didn't have that... FEELING. It was just a poor excuse to make more money with their lame albums after the movie and possible clothing line. Those people weren't even dressed for camp! It shouldn't even be called Camp Rock, cause ironically, there wasn't any rock music of any type. That also doesn't include the last song. "WE ROCK!" doesn't count because it has the word, rock in it.

Demi Lovato is played as a painfully shy teenager named Mitchie Torres who wants to go to a camp called Camp Rock. At first, her parents don't have the money to send her off, but eventually, they let her go cause apparently, THEY DO. Anyways, she's taken there and befriends a girl named Caitlyn Gellar (Alyson Stoner) and is also acquainted with the mean girl (Meaghan Jette Martin) and her group of followers (Anna Maria Perez de Tagle and Jasmine Richards). At the same time, a pop-star named Shane Gray (Joe Jonas) is going to the camp to take a break from his super-hard life being famous from a band called "Connect Three." During the movie, he is a spoiled brat and not to mention, a very unconvincing actor.

You would probably think there would be more Jonas Brothers time. You were ripped off! Nick and Kevin Jonas were only about 5 minutes of the movie. And as they only had 5 minutes of their screen time, they played horrible as actors. Nick was too serious and dull, he was just a pretty face to look at. Kevin on the other hand, was quite the opposite. He was STUPID. Through-out the whole movie, he kept whining about a birdhouse and was a flamboyant "airhead." I think DisneyChannel did this on purpose just to increase his fan base, since he is the least popular.

Demi was an OKAY singer, but not so much as an actress in my opinion. She didn't get to me, even though she was supposed to relate to about a thousand of the girls out there. Alyson Stoner was a better actress than all these people, but thank GOD she didn't sing. If we only heard her voice, she would be mistaken as a chipmunk!

I especially loved the mean girl. She was a bad actress, but her harshness was pumped up a little TOO much, even for DisneyChannel. She was a bitch. I liked her for that. If only she played a bit more better, and toned down the mean a little bit, then she would've been perfect! The other actors were terrible. And the plot was so predictable. My friend basically spoiled the movie ten minutes watching it, and she was right.

The ending made me want to smash the TV right then and there. The last song, "We Rock!" was just a way of brain-washing us into believing that they do, indeed rock. No you do not. You all should be getting Razzies at this point for worst Disney movie ever.

And kiddies, there was no kiss. DisneyChannel also ripped you off for that. Oh well. There's always Camp Rock 2... BLEH!

recycled movie
Porsche_Driver8 July 2008
camp rock was indeed a recycled version of HSM and HSM2. same plot of character just wanting to fit in, meeting a boy, realizing what they're meant to do, and then ending with a final song. mitchie just wants to fit it and is foiled by peer pressure to lie about her identity. poor acting by that blond girl and her cronies only add to the stale-cheese humor of this movie. so mitchie falls into their traps, while meanwhile, also falling into the trap of Joe (or is it Kevin) Jonas's "heartful" voice. then mitchie and Allison are framed, but still find a way to perform. so that annoying blond girl doesn't get everything she wanted for once, and makes a total fool of herself (my favorite part) and then mitchie puts on a shocking performance that SHOULD have won but didn't, where she is joined by that Jonas brother (Joe or Kevin) and they magically sing their hearts out without rehearsal. then the boring girl with the guitar wins, and its time for the final jam jam session. And out of the blue they all join together to sing. how HSM and HSM2 is that?? all in this together/ all for one/ now camp rock?? so the excitement builds with the song, just to be let down by the disappointing ending. mitchie and Joe or Kevin just smile and discuss canoing plans!! how boooooooriiiing!!!!! very much of a let down, especially for all those adoring Joe bro fans that practically drool at their feet. I'm not even a Joe bro obsesser and I was disappointed. the only reason i gave it a 2 was because of the Camp Rock song. pretty catchy!!

Boring...
Thanos_Alfie23 November 2020
"Camp Rock" is a Comedy - Family movie in which we watch a young girl going to a music camp where every gifted teen go. There a famous teen idol overhears her singing and starts searching for her. What he cannot even imagine is that the girls he is looking for is the one who works as a kitchen assistant.

I have to admit that I did not have high expectations from this movie so, I was not disappointed by it. The only things that I enjoyed were some songs but except that everything was below average. The direction which was made by Matthew Diamond was poor and he did not establish very well the main characters, something that created some plot holes that were not covered. Regarding the interpretations I have to say that all of them were below average except Demi Lovato who played as Mitchie Torres and she was not as bad as the rest of the cast. Finally, I believe that "Camp Rock" is a boring movie, with no plot and poor interpretations thus, do not waste your time watching it.

Clichéd and boring.
TOMNEL19 July 2008
The problem with this movie is not the performances (Well it sort of is) or even the direction, but the terrible writing. It's billed as a Disney Channel Original Movie, but it doesn't feel like a movie. It feels like a bunch of clichéd scenes from other movies made into a Frankenstein-ish monster. This "movie" is a beast to sit through and the only reason it is so popular with little girls is because of the abundant amount of screen time for Joe Jonas.

Mitchie (Demi Lovato) is finally able to live out her dream and go to a rock camp for the rich, all thanks to her mom taking the job as cook at the camp. Mitchie becomes friends with popular girls, but of course, they mistreat her. Shane Grey (Joe Jonas) is a rock star who is known as a bad boy, and in order to reinvent his image, he becomes a dance instructor at Camp Rock. Shane and Mitchie meet and they "fall in like". Stupidity ensues.

I can say, I'm quite glad they didn't try making this a comedy, because all Disney comedies fall flat on their butt to everyone except 12 year old girls (and younger). The songs are pretty run of the mill, and none are particularly good. The acting isn't terrible, but at times various things are annoying about them. Demi Lovato smiles way too much, over everything. She's either somber or super happy, maybe she should invent a happy medium look in herself. Joe Jonas acts like he's sad in one scene, but his acting is laughable. As mentioned earlier, the plot is not anything new, but a bunch of elements of after school specials and bad kiddie movies mixed together to make this. It is genuinely boring, and sadly, fails in comparison to the extremely lame High School Musical movies.

Overall, this is bad. Don't see it. This doesn't apply to little kids with no sense of good. They'll enjoy it somehow anyways.

My rating: * out of ****. 85 mins. Not rated

I loved it!
areyouforcereal30 June 2008
I first saw Camp Rock on Family Channel on Friday June 20, 2008, and I would just like to say that I loved it! Now don't get me wrong I'm not just going to sit here and talk about how hot the Jonas Brothers were.

Camp Rock was an enjoyable movie to watch, there were some new fresh faces like Demi Lovato,as the sweet and main character Mitchie, Meaghan Jette Martin as the evil Tess etc. Overall the plot was awesome and the acting was better than expected, being Disney Channel Stars. The singing was amazing, especially up and coming Demi Lovato. The songs were very catchy and upbeat to listen to, my favourite being This is Me, sung by Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas. Overall i think that Camp Rock was better than expected with me and is a great movie for family and friends. I highly recommended viewing it.:)

Surprisingly good for a Disney Channel flick
StartingAllOver1414 July 2009
2006 was the mayor turning point for Disney with the new releases of "Hannah Montana" and "High School Musical". While they amused the kids and tweens, they certainly despaired the rest of the world. And why not? They were just made for marketing campaign and for franchise. The High School Musical films (at least those I've seen) were quite mediocre. Hannah Montana the show, despite it's flaws, turned to be quite entertaining, but was unfortunately followed up by a disappointing movie. Logically there's no strange why the hatred for the new Disney Channel products has blossomed and why some of the public attacks them, considering that Disney currently no longer makes hand drawn-flicks (with the exception of "The Princess and the Frog") and instead just produces out teen stars with their own shows, movies, music and etc.

Speaking for myself, I don't like either quite like that Disney produces stars in that way, but I shall confess that I've seen a few of the new Disney Channel movies, just of curiosity. When I first heard about "Camp Rock", my thought were immediately that Disney wanted to repeat it's success with a mediocre movie. But I was wrong; "Camp Rock" is one of the better Disney channel movie I've seen.

Of course this movie isn't a masterpiece, but it's surprisingly decent, entertaining and even better than the High School Musical flicks and the Hannah Montana Movie.

"Camp Rock" is starring the Disney teen star Demi Lovato, who is promoted in almost the same way as Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus. Demi is likable enough and delivers a decent performance here, but she does have a lot of progression to distinguish herself from both Selena and Miley. This doesn't necessarily means that Demi is a bad actress, hopefully if she chooses the right parts, she can become really good. But vocally she is a step in front of her competitors. She doesn't have a distinctive voice, but a beautiful one, who sounds stunning when she hits the right notes. She's also shows energy and dynamic in her "This Is Me" performance at the end of the film.

The rest of the cast does a decent job without being memorable. Those who distinguish themselves are Alyson Stoner as the likable Caitlyn Geller and Meaghan Jette Martin as Tess Tyler. Also Joe Jonas is very credible as the selfish and unlikeable (at least the beginning) Shane Gray. His two other brothers are charming, but far from the best actors this world has to offer. Otherwise it's easy to notice that the same Disney stars from the TV shows is used in the movies. Even Anna Maria Perez de Tagle plays a dumb character in flick similar to the character of Ashley as she plays in "Hannah Montana".

Otherwise, there isn't so much to say about "Camp Rock". It's a typical teen flick; a insecure girl as the protagonist, new friends to make, falling in love and etc. Oh, one thing I want to mention; If you've asked me who Demi Lovato or Joe Jonas was for a year ago, I wouldn't have a clue. And the ironically about the Disney Channel flicks is that their movies are mediocre, but their songs are very catchy and likable - and "Camp Rock" is no exception. There are many good songs here, which are better than both the latest "Hannah" and "High School" songs.

The only bad thing about this film is that is was released a year ago. This is one of Disney Channel's better movies and if it was released today, it would have made up to Disney's other mistakes like the "Hannah Montana Movie", "High School Musical" and even "Hatching Pete" and "Dadnapped". Otherwise, don't expect a masterpiece while you're seeing this film, just expect this to be a harmless and decent teen flick and then you'll be pleased.

Music In My Soul
bkoganbing20 June 2008
Some things just never go out of style though they might take on a different look for a different atmosphere. Watching the new Disney Channel film Camp Rock took me back to the days when the Mickey Mouse Club offered Spin and Marty going to the Triple R ranch for the summer to do cowboy stuff. And the Triple R was not co-ed.

Styles and times change, but Camp Rock reminded me a whole lot of Spin and Marty. Here the kids go if they're musically creative, sort of like a Fame summer school by the lake. Or if you will this is where Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens spent their summer before going back to East High and dealing with a musical show and the Wildcats basketball in High School Musical.

The Disney Channel did this to showcase the latest bubblegum pop group the Jonas Brothers. Joe Jonas is actually the male lead, a young pop star with an attitude problem. His uncle actually runs the camp and his real life brothers are his backup singers. But the plot actually centers on Demi Lovato whose a talented young lady and yearns to go to Camp Rock, but the cost is prohibitive for her parents. Then Mom who's played by the Wizards of Waverly Place mom, Marie Canals Barrera gets a job at the camp cooking for the whole gang of about 200 kids and staff. Demi has to help in the kitchen though as part of her tuition.

Of course these are the high school years and who doesn't want to hang with the cool kids. And leading that crowd is Meaghan Jette Martin who makes Charpay of High School Musical look like Mother Teresa. So poor Demi makes up some huge lie about her mother and even denies the relationship. I think you can get some idea where this all is going.

Nothing really outstanding here, I thought Disney's High School Musical was better. Still the young folks are talented and easy to take. And I wasn't expecting Shakespeare or O'Neill. The Jonas Brothers get to showcase their latest hit Music In My Soul.

As The Magic Kingdom is already readying High School Musical 3, I think you could probably bet the rent money there will be a sequel here. As to whether the Jonas Brothers are in it will depend on how long they keep their number one status as bubblegum teen stars.

But I really was reminded of Spin and Marty from way back in the Fifties. Maybe Camp Rock is on the sight of the old Triple R.

Dialague is TERRIBLE. Had it been better the movie would have been a hit!
ottimosoftware21 June 2008
I'll be honest - I was hoping this film would rock me. Sadly, it did just the opposite.

Camp Rock had all the makings to be a next HSM, but it disappointed. The biggest problems with these types of movies is that they are beyond corny. The whole movie's dialogue was atrocious. It didn't make the movie develop nicely, didn't make me hate the antagonist enough, and didn't make me see the fate of the main "romance" in the film.

Another sign of being ameteur is that the scenes flew by too quickly - they seemingly had enough dialogue on paper, but when acted out were obviously way to quick to enjoy.

The writing is just the only thing (yet most major thing) that makes this film HORRIBLE. It could have been a hit - it could have been a blockbuster. I'll be honest, it had a plot with a lot of potential. The actors weren't that bad, I especially enjoyed Alyson Stoners performance. But Mr. Disney Writer, can you stop repeaeting the word 'jerk' every 5 seconds?

To speak the truth, the performances were even great at times. I felt the tension at the climax where Mitchie and whoever Joe Jonas plays have a little verbal fight. Had the writing been better, it coulda been a great scene!!

I have to say though, the only reason why I'll give this a four is because of the music. Contrary to HSM 2, the music in the movie - well, I'll give it a 9/10. It was really some great works of pop, and hip-hop too - and the total opposite of cheesy!! Amazing, too is what they did with the final song, how they brought "This is Me" and "Gotta find you" into one song. Granted, this is an easy technique to do because you can easily write 2 songs with the same chords just different melodies. But having the idea to do that was genius.

Final analysis: had the writing been better, it would have been a great film, considering the budget is very low.

Good...
mucicaddict9 July 2008
I have just seen the movie and i think that it is a good story, they are great songs, but i do think that none of them know how to do playback (it's quite simple...i have done it...!!), and there are a few parts over acted.... Even though i have listed a few defects i think the film is good and worth seeing! I will definitely buy the CD!

i ask that for camp rock 2 can get them to do playback well, it wasn't good in this one nor in high school musical 1...!

Demi great voice, Jonas Brothers amazing and good job to the rest of the cast.

Disney only seem to be making these kind of films, i suggest that after the 3rd high school musical you stop and move on to something else, if you want more musicals then do more...but stop repeating...it's not just you, whenever a series or a film is popular they always do another part...it really annoys me after 3 of them!! lol

Entertaining, But Cliché
kobebusia18 September 2011
I see that several people have bashed this movie with all these reviews, and even though Camp Rock Came out 3 years ago, I'm still gonna critique it and give my honest opinion. I thought this movie was fun to watch, it was definitely more likable and realistic than HSM, but at the same time, I find it very predictable, and meaningless for multiple reasons. For example, it does use the same type of characters such as the shy, new girl, heartthrob dude who's a jerk, mean blonde girl who leads a clique, etc, and you don't even have to say anything out loud to be able to figure out what's gonna happen later in the movie, you just know. As far as the music, I found some great variety and I like how a lot of the actors were given some solo songs but my favorite song would have to be Joe Jonas's Gotta Find You because it's very heartfelt and memorable. With the exception of Too Cool, I enjoyed every song on the soundtrack. The acting wasn't such a problem, seeing as Joe did great at being a jerk, although his character Shane Gray reminded me of Jordan Cahill from Stuck In The Suburbs in the sense that they both want to be able to have creative control over their music, and Demi Lovato was great, especially since this film was her big break. However, I wish the other characters such as Barron(Jordan Francis) and Sander(Roshon Fegan) were given personal story lines and more time to develop, though I do praise their talent. A problem I have with this movie is its message; It is predictable and boring, and it seems that the filmmakers were too focused on the "Entertainment Factor" that they didn't spend enough time on the movie's core message. While the concept of the movie revolves around rock, the soundtrack doesn't exactly stay true to that because there's hip-hop, pop, and R&B, involved, the music is still enjoyable. I will say that the Jonas Brothers in general are not meant to be actors, especially not Nick. If you thought this film sucked, try watching its disastrous sequel, and you'll get an idea of what bad movies are like. All in All, Camp Rock is a pretty fun movie, but as far as teaching an important lesson, it's very cliché and not very substantial. 7.5/10

Disappointing
kickinit105 July 2008
I must agree, Camp Rock was a disappointment. I liked 2 songs in the entire movie, the rest were crap. The movie was compared to High School Musical nonstop, and I kind of knew it wouldn't live up to the hype but I really enjoy Alyson Stoner and the previews made it look better. Every song that "Tess" sang was overly digitalized and it completely turned me off. I realize they lip-sync in the movies, but I just hate when they make it sound that fake. I couldn't even tell it was supposed to be a real person singing. I do however have to applaud Disney on choosing a leading lady who isn't anorexic thin. Demi Lovato seems like a girl who is thin, but no more so than anyone else could be. (unlike stars like Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez). Other than that, I hated her. I don't find her to be an appealing personality, and she just turned me off, I can't explain why. Basically I found Camp Rock to be a major disappointment that I almost wanted to turn off. The only point that drew really any emotion from me was the "What Ever Major Loser" scene, which is extremely said. Way to fail Disney Channel.

Officially worse than "Raise Your Voice"
blue_wave_aqua22 June 2008
I can't believe I saw daylight. I actually found something worse than "Raise Your Voice".

This movie is HORRIBLE. Jonas brother can't act, the "amazing acts" suck, the plot is the same as "Raise Your Voice", and everything in this has been done before (includes the mean girl, the unpopular talent girl who is a "star", and the "cute" guy).

Not only does this movie suck, but the Jonas brothers shouldn't even be considered actors or dancers. They look awkward doing the dancing. Joe Jonas as "Shane Gray" was completely overacted and made him look like a diva, not a rocker.

This whole movie was to promote the Jonas Brothers. Trust me, it was an hour and a half of my life that I will never get back. If you hate the Jonas brothers, don't watch this. As for the JoBro lovers, I can't believe you think this movie is full of talent.
