Potential wasted
cheesetothepower20 March 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This show had potential, but that was wasted. The pilot and a few of the first episodes were fine, but it went downhill from there. Some of the characters (Spritle, X, Speed, Lucy) were enjoyable, but the rest was either annoying, stupid or thought they could get away with idiotic plans. Another problem was the overall story arc, for Speed to build a gasless engine. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with the idea, I think that it would be wonderful think to have vehicles that give out less pollution. The thing is, it doesn't make such a great TV show. The show quickly moves from the long-lost son of the best car racer in the world trying to find his way in a car racing school with building a gasless engine in the backdrop to the complete opposite.

There is also the main villain of the series; a sleazy man who made his fortune in oil, with his daughter that is dating X and willing to hurt Speed to help her father at anytime it suits him. You know, if my partner was trying to hurt my brother, I would break up with them. The villain also went from trying to stop the gasless engines from putting him out of business by preventing them from being built, which is not unreasonable, to an idiot to blind by greed and a desire to put his enemies down without anyone knowing. The show did not deliver on what I wanted to see. I wanted to see the characters growing, getting to know each other. I wanted to see more of X and Speed bonding, getting to know each other as brothers. I wanted them to spend time with their uncle Spritle. I wanted to see him trying his best to balance being principle and acting as a father to his brother's two children, who were tragically separated at a young age for their own safety. I would have liked to see X and Speed to have felt resentment at their father for abandoning them and when he finally does show up, that feeling wouldn't go away quickly or easily. I would have liked for Spritle to confront him, telling him "You lost seeing your children growing up; you forfeited the right to call them your sons when you left them. Don't come crawling to me about how little they trust you, that angry looks they give you, the way they refuse to call you father." I would have also liked to see less of Speed's and X's friends, who rage from annoying to crazy to stupid.

Now let's go into plot. Speed is the son of racer Speed Racer, brother of X and nephew Spritle, and his mother is never mentioned. Speed is trying to build a gasless engine with his roommate Connor and best friend Lucy. The basic formula for most episodes is this: somebody tries to gets Speed's gasless engine or the blueprints for it, whether it by being trickery of by theft, Speed races and pulls off a trick or two, the day is saved. Another setback is the animation. I know they were on a budget, but they could have tried to do something more with it, done something aesthetically more pleasing. They could have done something like in "Batman: The Animated Series," in that series, the animation was a bit choppy, but in my opinion a nicer style in general. Nothing says "I'm just in it to collect a paycheck" more than bad animation styles outside a pitiful budget or an amateur job where recourses are limited and one must take what they have. I would have been happy with flash animation. I feel as if the characters were ever hand drawn, they were highly altered for a bad 3D effect.

It could of been better.
emasterslake18 July 2010
The idea of Speed's own son going to a racing school work out nicely. If done correctly. Let's just list five of what I find disappointing from just seeing one episode.

1. The character designs, they look nothing like the original anime. If they weren't going to pay a Japanese animation company to do this series, they could of focused on how to draw anime books to make the characters of this and the predecessor look like they are in the same Speed Racer universe.

2. The animation, I'm guessing they had to make it as low budget as possible. Sure the original anime had stiffness but do that had to comply with this series as well. Cause it didn't look right for everyone to look like they have stiff joints.

3. Supporting cast, If they were going to include supporting characters, they can at least be more creative. Cause most of the racing students look like they came straight from a typical high school TV show.

4. lack of violence, that's what made the original so great to watch was the violence. But for this they removed all of the guns & heavy use of car crashes. I blame this on parents who think cartoons are better off without these.

5. lame villains, all we have is an almost evil business man who is after the gas-less engine of the Mach 6. The original had awesome villains including terrorists, mobs, assassins, & insane racers. Those guys made the anime a classic, you remove those from this show and then you're left with a boring segment with less appealing villains.

Peter Ferandaz appears as an Older Spritle, which is cool they actually got him to do the voice of an original character. But not even he was able to save the show.

Cause in the end they fail to make this a true sequel to the original anime. Those who want to see a sequel to original Speed Racer will be disappointed with this one.

Dreadful
Rectangular_businessman9 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I just don't get why Lionsgate made such a horrible animated show as this: Most of the criticism made by the modern viewers about the original "Speed Racer" cartoon is concerned about the quality of the animation...But seriously, compared with the poor CGI and the incredibly unappealing character designs(Everyone has exactly the same face!) of this pathetic series, the original "Speed Racer" seems like something from the Golden Age of animation.

But despite being slow, ugly and choppy, the animation quality is not the only bad thing about this show:The plot is idiotic and clichéd ( A "Racing Academy"? Seriously? As if the "Duel Academy" in Yugioh GX wasn't idiotic enough) All the new characters are boring and lame, and none, absolutely none of them was likable, or at least interesting. The voice acting is bland and forgettable, at best.

This cartoon...is horrible beyond belief. I tried to watch a couple of episodes, but I couldn't stand it. The amount of annoying clichés, stupid characters, the atrocious animation and ugly designs are the elements that made this pathetic series an unbearable spectacle that is better to forget.

"Speed Racer: The Next Generation" is so bad that makes "The New Adventures of Speed Racer" animated by Fred Wolf look good in comparison.

Putrid Garbage
Falconeer23 February 2015
Anyone...and I mean ANYONE who has any kind of love and respect for the original "Mach Go Go Go" anime, will find this Lionsgate cartoon to be offensive. It will make your eyes bleed, it is that UGLY, and it will make your brain hurt because it is that nonsensical and stupid. The embarrassing dialog spoken by those flat, antiseptic voices will make your ears bleed. I imagine this project was some kind of a rush job to stir up some kind of interest in the movie, that came out the same year. The live action movie wasn't that good, but it did have some nice artistic touches. The same cannot be said about this awful, American abortion of a cartoon. This is honestly the ugliest looking animation I have ever seen. It is a real insult to the original series. For fans of the original 60's anime, that want more of Speed Racer, just search out the 1997 anime; it is very good stuff; beautiful animation that completely respects the source material. And Lionsgate: How dare you unleash this putrid on the world..

Worse than the 1993 version!
If you thought that awful 90s version was bad, well this is even worse! Hardly any of the original characters are in this! At least the 90s series TRIED to be good...they just failed miserably by changing the character designs, giving them annoying voices, and making the show boring. This didn't even TRY to be good! Now, the original is a masterpiece and I love it with a passion, think of how I felt when I saw this! After being tortured by that 90s garbage, I got stuck with this trash! Their designs here are the ugliest I've ever seen, the racing is dumbed down (no more huge crashes!) and there isn't any actual action at all! It is the junkiest of all the Speed Racer shows. Avoid this trash. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE WATCH THE ORIGINAL! NEGATIVE 1000 out of 10!

People are Just Mad the Original Characters Aren't In This
Channeleven4 January 2024
Why else did this show get a low rating? I've yet to see an objective reason to why. Speed Racer: The Next Generation is worth a six at least, only adding a 7 because this was a big part of my childhood, and the original Speed Racer was a big part of many others' childhoods, so there.

Now, while this cartoon isn't much to write home about, it was made to help promote the 2008 live action film, and didn't have as much moeny going into it let's face it. So what good is this series? Well, if you want a little something different from Speed Racer this has you covered. You want a throwback to those anime-influenced shows from the mid-2000s? For the company that initially produced it they did a surprisingly good job.

There's nothing particularly hatable about this show, or its characters, it doesn't try to undermine the older shows, it's more earnest than you think. If you came to this expecting the same things over and over again, touch grass... or just keep watching the old cartoons over and over again.

3.9? Really guys?
T-ZER02 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Why is does this show have such a low rating? I remember seeing it on NickToons, and I loved every episode. I have seen the original Speed Racer TV show and enjoyed it, I love how this one pays homage to the original series unlike the live-action film.

They brought back some of the original voice actors, like the one for Speed, and the way they animated the Mach 5 looked amazing. I also love the design and look of the Mach 6.

They express the Next Generation warmly here. For example: Speed and X are brothers and the sons of Speed Sr. X is named after his uncle Racer X. Jared and Jesse are called the Deucy brothers. They are the sons of Ace Deucy, the villain of the pilot episode of the original series.

Annalise's vehicle, the Spoiled Brat pays homage to Duggery's car if you look at some of the design. Also, major spoilers. Zile Zazic was supposedly revealed to be Captain Terror. The leader of the original car acrobatic team. So yeah. I don't understand the hate for this show. It is one of the greatest cartoons ever created and deserves a blu-ray release. Even if it doesn't. I have all the episodes on Prime Video right now. And I love them so much.

Tamer version of Speed Racer!
ShelbyTMItchell13 March 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I know one reviewer says that the villains are lamer and less violence. But I happen to like it that way. As the villains use more high tech and brains than the original villains that used more brawns and more violence.

Speed Jr is a great driver but is not at all a martial artist like his father of the same name, was though he has used it a couple of times. Rex Jr, Speed's older brother and another race, and the bad boy in the school the two are attending for racing. Have a love-hate relationship but grown to love and depend on one another.

Speed Sr is now a lot of cautious and a lot more calmer. As he is undercover like his older brother Rex is. Rex Jr if you have caught on, is named after his Sr's older secret spy brother. Speed Sr and Speed Jr seem to have a lot more in common than Rex Jr does. But Sr loves both of his sons the same.

Sprittle is now a headmaster and more calmer and more wiser than his child like attitude in the original. Plus he is much more authoritative when running the school and his Speed and Rex's younger brother. He won't bend the rules for his nephews and for that matter, his older brother's sake. But gives them advice and help from time to time.

It is a much more tamer version of the show with the kids. Original is the original but still, this is much more tamer.

Speed Racer the Next Generation is Fun!
ReviewsAtHome10 March 2011
Contrary to what other reviewers may say, the sequel to the original cartoon/manga works out well.

The problem with sequels is that so many people hold the originals to such a high regard because the originals were usually executed at an early time in that viewer's life. It's hard for such viewers to admit that they weren't always as critical or as intelligent in their youth as they are today.

Going back, I re-watched some of the original Speed Racer cartoons, and having little previous memory of them I was able to watch them with a critical eye.

The original cartoon really was weak from a script, animation and direction standpoint. This isn't surprising since it was in an era where stock animated cells were used often in the industry (exactly how long are the hallways in Hanna-Barbara cartoons anyway?).

To say that the execution of the Next Generation is weaker than the original series really is like saying the special effects of original star trek were better than say in Next Generation, Deep Space Nine or Voyager.

I use the Star Trek comparison because I don't want people to think I'm bashing the original Speed. The original speed is unpolished, some scripts were fun, others weren't. Original Star Trek is unpolished, some scripts were fun, others were downright terrible. So, Maybe you don't like TNG for Speed or TNG for Star Trek, that's fine; but don't blame the script quality or the special effects for your dislike. Fact is Original Speed used quite a few stock scripts, generic stories of the time with no real originality. Same with original Trek (just take them out of space and put them on "Wagon Train", you'll see what I mean). SR:TNG mostly tried something new, same thing with ST:TNG.

One big plus to the series is unlike the movie, Speed Racer: TNG does NOT re-write speed racer history. It adds to it. Nothing changes a single episode of the original series.

this show rocks
biblestudy229 June 2009
I found my interest of speed racer, after watching the movie. I then found out this animated series. I have recorded all of the episodes possible onto my TV. I'm waiting for this 1st season to come onto DVD, I will definitely buy it. I have strong hope that the show shall continue. The original series lasted five seasons, I hope that Speed Racer: Next Generation lasts at least that long. The characters in this show are both interesting and perfect for the show. I find it interesting that in this show racer X is the name of one of speed racers sons.I'm waiting for speed & lucy to hook up, become boyfriend & girlfriend. I'ts obviously that they both have strong feelings for each other. I definitely LOVE this show, it is my favorite show on TV. I give this show an absolute 10+ ranking!
