- Having traveled back in time 16 years, the immature Hiro seeks out his late mother to try to get his memories back, while Claire has a run-in with a younger Noah Bennett when he was assigned by the company to look after the infant Claire and how she may have become the catalyst for the secret formula. Back in the present, Nathan returns to Pinehurst where Tracy introduces him to a group of U.S. Marines that Arthur has recruited to be his army of super-solders once Mohinder gets the catalyst for the ability-giving formula correct and which hopes the formula will be able to cure his disease... and begin Mr. Petrelli's quest for world domination. Peter and the Hatian return to New York and are sent by Angela in desperate attempt to break into Pinehurst to kill Arthur Petrelli before he can complete the formula. Meanwhile, Ando, Parkman, and Daphne seek out a bicycle messenger who may have the last '9th Wonders' comic book works to learn more about the future and where Hiro is and what to do to save him. We are back at the New York balcony where Claire and Hiro are watching Kaito give baby Claire to HRG. They're having a language problem but are watching with great interest their younger selves. As Kaito and young Hiro leave, Future Hiro runs off to see him mother as Claire wonders what she's supposed to do. Young Hiro hugs his mom, who is ill. She and Kaito talk - in English so young Hiro won't understand- about the fact that she's dying. She thinks it will happen tonight and that they should make arrangements for the catalyst. Claire recognizes that they're talking about her. Kaito asks if she's sure. Mrs. Nakamura says she's sure and that Kaito must think of the future. He says he will have HRG return with the baby. Mrs. N wanted to keep it in the family. Kaito says absolutely not. (Meaning that she was hoping to inject the catalyst in Hiro).
Young Hiro notices what he thinks is a dead bird in a cage and Mrs. N says to Kaito that the conversation isn't over yet. Kaito leaves. Young Hiro hands his mom the bird, who breathes life into it. As Future Hiro realizes his mother is a healer, he and Claire both arrive at what they think they have to do to restore his memory and prevent herself from becoming the catalyst respectively. She thinks she's supposed to follow her dad so they don't inject the catalyst in her and she can be a hero. She tells Hiro she'll meet him back there later that night. He, of course, doesn't understand what she's saying. She runs off. Kaito comes upon Future Hiro who he mistakes for the new chef and orders him to make food for his wife.
Back in the present day on the beach at Costa Verde, CA a blood-soaked Sylar answers his phone. It's Arthur who wants to know where Claire is. Into thin air, says Sylar, who adds that he's not helping anyone anymore. He says HRG told him that Arthur isn't his father and he wants the truth. He knows where to find it too, he's got a whole new list of people with abilities- he scrolls through names on the cell phone and lands on Sue Landers- and he says he'll come see Arthur real soon. He pours lighter fluid on Elle's dead body. (Where did he get that?) And sets her ablaze using the power he took from her.
In Angela's study at Primatech she's giving a gun to Peter to shoot Arthur. One bullet in the back of the head will do it, especially with the Haitian- also in the room- around to make Arthur vulnerable. She says that now that Nathan has switched sides it's all up to Peter. The Haitian agrees with the plan. And Angela reminds him that Arthur wouldn't hesitate to do the same to Peter or Nathan, or her. Peter is unsure. Angela isn't. Peter stares at the gun and picks it up.
Tracy and Arthur are chatting at Pinehearst. She's telling him that the DoD is on board. Nathan arrives, Arthur welcomes him. Nathan wonders why Tracy is there. She says it's her job to find opportunities for him. Nathan says he agrees that the world is becoming more dangerous and agrees with Arthur's plan, but that the plan needs a leader with vision and that isn't Arthur. Arthur wonders if it's Nathan. Nathan says he's taking over Pinehearst. He says he'll work out of his offices and use his resources. Arthur says he "made" Nathan. Nathan says he wouldn't have made him if he didn't need him. Tracy points out that Arthur wanted a person with authority and Nathan is a senator. Arthur agrees and says Tracy will brief Nathan.
Tracy and Nathan walk and talk. He's mad that she went behind his back. She said she did it on his behalf and that although Arthur has crossed some lines he's had a vision of Nathan as president, where he belongs and she belongs there with him. Knox and Flint look on with interest.
Tracy takes him into a large room explaining the "intelligent design" plan- when the formula is perfected they will get to choose which people get what power instead of how they're randomly parceled out now. And they've chosen the best. She says "meet the future" as a group of young male, mostly white soldiers snap to attention.
We flashback to the Bennet apartment 16 years ago as a harried Sandra carries a crying baby and several bags to the door. Future Claire watches and then runs up to help with the bags. She introduces herself as the neighbor's niece Bonnie. She pulls her baby self out of Sandra's snuggly and offers to change her...self. Sandra says she's totally overwhelmed. "Bonnie" offers to share her major babysitting skills. (They're doing an amazing job making Sandra look young and dewy). Sandra explains that her husband works a lot. Sandra talks about being in love with the baby even only knowing her for a few hours. Future Claire tells Sandra not to let the baby out of her sight, since they grow up so fast.
Back in the present we're at Sue Landers' office. Sylar is waiting for her. She immediately knows he's lying about being a delivery guy. She's a human lie detector. He explains he covets her ability. She says he doesn't really want it. He agrees it must be hard to always hear the truth. He whaps her against the wall and does the finger head-cut thing. She screams. He talks about how good it feels. Several co-workers run in with presents. Sylar stands up with bloody hands and says "cake?" and then shuts the door behind them.
Nathan is chatting up a Marine. The Marine tells him that he knows the program will inject him with a safe drug that will make him a better soldier. Nathan warns it will change his life forever. The Marine says he gets it but he has his reasons. He's done two tours in Iraq and on his last mission ten out of twelve men in his unit were killed. Traveling home he wished he'd been better. Nathan says he's too hard on himself. The Marine says everyone says that -"you're only human"- but if he was more than that maybe it would've turned out differently.
Daphne, who apparently can speed people along with her, has brought Parkman and Ando to Manhattan. They're looking for the bike messenger who got the bag from Isaac. The dispatcher thinks it's crazy they're asking about a delivery from last year and the city prevents him from sharing info about his deliveries anyway. Parkman says there is no such city regulation. He reads the guy's mind instead. The guy knows about the sketches - and is skimming off the top. The dispatcher says he'll go get them from the safe in the back.
Ando wonders why Daphne, a former nemesis, is helping. She starts to say it's all her fault since she started the mess by stealing the formula and Parkman stops her, saying she's doing it because it's the right thing to do. They spot the dispatcher riding away. Daphne speeds after him. He stops short of her and goes flying over a cab. He says she wins.
In the Nakamura kitchen Future Hiro is trying to cook for his mother. He overhears his parents talking. His father hasn't told Hiro she's dying. His mother wants to give "the light" (the catalyst) to Hiro. Kaito says they've talked about this and since Hiro's irresponsible it's a bad idea. She says he's just a child and he should be given a chance. Kaito says he's tried. Young Hiro comes upon Future Hiro and says his dad is probably right about him.
Future Claire is counseling baby Claire about her future. HRG enters and wonders who Claire is. She gives her cover story. HRG is mad Sandra left the baby with some strange girl. He pulls Sandra aside. He returns and calls Claire's bluff asking who she is and what she wants. Claire says she's here to protect her baby self and the family. Sandra is confused and HRG tells her to go in another room and wait. Claire says she knows HRG is scared and is afraid to love the baby. He wonders if she's a mind reader. She says something like that. She says that this baby is going to need his protection and that they're going to love each other so much. He wonders how she knows this. Then the phone rings. Claire says not to answer it. It's The Company, who will want to have her back just for a moment but that it will change everything and that his little Claire bear is fine the way she is. He smiles at her and doesn't answer saying, "Claire bear, huh?" Claire thanks him.
Across town Future Hiro is serving his mother. He apologizes for making waffles instead of what she wanted. She says that they're her son's favorite but she's not very hungry. She looks at him and says he seems familiar and wonders if they've met. He says yes, she's his mother. He introduces himself and explains about his time travel powers. They hug. She's freaked, in a good way. She calls it a gift since she'd never thought she'd see him like this. She asks him to tell her all about his life. He says he can't, explaining his stolen memories. He wonders if she can heal him. She says she will try. She kisses his head. It works. He says he remembers how much he misses her. She asks him to explain his life. He does. She says she knew he was meant for greatness. Hiro says his father saw him become a great hero. And that he now has the chance to save the world again. He asks her to give him the catalyst. He says he will defend it. She explains about Claire. He reiterates he can keep the light safe. She says she always believed in him. She takes his hand and transmits a light into him. She says she is proud of him. He says she's the one who showed him how to be a hero. He looks back at her and she's dead. He sadly bids her farewell.
In the present the Haitian and Peter are stuck in traffic. The Haitian offers a penny for his thoughts. Peter thinks it's sad the eclipse has ended since the world would be safer without the super-powered. The Haitian says to kill one's own father is a horrible thing. Peter says Arthur tried to kill Nathan, took away his powers and would kill Peter if he had to. The Haitian points out he didn't. Peter says that he and the Haitian know the world isn't safe with Arthur in it. The Haitian says he also knows that Peter wants to save the world, including his father, and to give the gun to him. Peter says just like the Haitian's brother was the Haitian's responsibility, Arthur is his.
Sylar, again blood-soaked, gets into an elevator, playing muzak. The elevator's other inhabitant is totally freaked out. Sylar asks him if something is wrong. The guy says no. Sylar's lie detector kicks in and he says, "it does kind of tingle."
The messenger dispatcher brings Daphne, Parkman, and Ando the sketchbook saying he didn't know how much it was worth. They open the book and look puzzled. The first page has a picture of Hiro calling him "Lost in Time." Parkman thinks maybe it's not so bad. Daphne says maybe it's just the cover to get people to buy it.
A drawing of Claire on the balcony morphs into...Claire on the balcony. She turns around to see Hiro. He tells her they can go home now and he's taken the catalyst and the future is safe. She questions that he put the catalyst in himself just as Arthur appears, believing he's right on time. Arthur wings Claire to one side. Hiro says he will save Claire. Arthur disagrees, drawing Hiro to him while saying he will take the catalyst and Hiro's powers to boot. He does, as the light flows into him. "You're a dead man," he says to Hiro, and wings him off the balcony. Arthur goes to Claire saying he needs her to deliver a message: "Tell Angela it's over, I won." He then transports Claire. We go over the balcony to see Hiro holding on to a flag pole jutting out from the balcony high above the street and crying for help. This morphs into a drawing in the book. Daphne and Parkman posit that now that Arthur has the catalyst he can perfect the formula and make another time traveler. Ando thinks it could be him and he could go back in time and save Hiro. He runs off saying they have to find the formula and then turns back wondering how they can do that.
We cut to Mohinder's lab where a big drum of formula is cooking up. (It looks orange-red jello.) Arthur enters with Tracy and Nathan and lays his hands on the drum, infusing it with the light. Everyone smiles.
"Ready to change the world?" Arthur asks.
Peter and the Haitian walk purposefully into Pinehearst and disable a security guard. In the lab Mohinder's cooking up doses. Tracy says they'll need fifty for the marines. Arthur cocks his head. Nathan asks what's up. Arthur says it's just a minor inconvenience and walks out to greet Peter. Peter points the gun at Arthur who tries to pull it out of his hand. He can't --thanks, Haitian! Peter says he's simply there to stop him. Arthur says he doesn't think Peter has the nerve to kill him. Peter cocks the gun.
The Marine from before is strapped into a chair bolted to the concrete floor, awaiting his dose. Tracy approves of Nathan's very all-American, poster ready guinea pig. Nathan instructs Mohinder to give him the drug. The Marine is freaked out by Mohinder's scaly appearance and isn't calmed when Mohinder says it was a mistake and the formula the marine is getting will correct it. The Marine starts to freak and Nathan tries to calm him down. Mohinder injects him and steps out of the glass cage. Nathan, Tracy, and Mohinder watch him transform. He shakes and spasms.
The Haitian is cracking, saying Arthur's powers are too strong. Arthur offers to give Peter his abilities back with the snazzy new formula. The Haitian begs him to shoot him now. Arthur says that was always Peter's problem, too much thought not enough action. Just as the Haitian is about to collapse and it seems like Arthur is getting his powers back, Peter shoots. The bullet stops short of Arthur's head just as he's saying, "How could you be my son?" The bullet hangs in mid-air and Peter, confused, has a slice across his cheek. Then Sylar steps into the frame. He wings the gun away from Peter.
"Gabriel! You're here," Arthur says, and Sylar replies that there's no place like family. He asks if Arthur is really family. Arthur, with the bullet still poised to strike his head, tells him that of course he's his father. The air shimmers as the lie detector goes off. Sylar says, "No, you're not." He turns to Peter and says, "You're not a killer Peter... I am," and lets the bullet go through Arthur's brain. He lets Peter know he won't kill him since he doesn't have anything he needs anymore. Sylar heads back through a set of double doors, presumably to wherever he came from. The Haitian apologizes to Peter, saying it was his father who had to die. Peter tells him to go after Sylar. He does. Peter picks up the gun and stands over his father's body as a light emits from him.
In the lab the Marine, who has slipped his arm restraints, stops shaking. Mohinder asks how he feels. He stands up and walks toward the glass. Then he turns and rips the chair into which he was strapped out of the ground, bolts and all, and throws it through the glass so hard the legs sink into the opposite wall. Nathan, Tracy and Mohinder look shocked; Tracy begins to smile. The Marine breathes heavily as he gives Mohinder his answer.
"I feel good," he says.
