- Renato, a Mexican aviation exec, is shocked to learn that he has an American half-brother he never knew about: free-spirited Asher. They are forced on a road trip together, tracing the path their father took from Mexico to the U.S.
- Renato Murguía, an airplane manufacturing company owner based in his hometown of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, is getting married. His fiancée Pamela is concerned about Renato not being a supportive father to her adolescent son, Emilio, who is bullied at school for being proverbially "weird", that assessment about Emilio with which Renato concurs. This issue combined with Renato not seeming to have any true friends leads Pamela to believe that Renato's problems in forging meaningful relationships all stem from his sense of abandonment when he was around Emilio's age. Renato once considered his father, Flavio Murguía, his best friend in the joy in their shared time together roughhousing, playing soccer, and their passion both in puzzles and remote controlled toy planes, which led to Renato's career in airplane manufacturing. That all changed when Flavio left in 1994 for the US in the economic crash in Mexico, Flavio vowing to return home when he could, something which he never did, leading to Renato not having spoken to his father since he was a child. So when a woman named Katherine, who Renato learns is Flavio's current wife, contacts Renato in Flavio - now named Frank - being on his deathbed in Chicago and wanting to see him before he dies, Pamela encourages Renato to go see his father to help him address his anti-social issues despite their wedding only being days away. Renato, who does go see his father, becomes even more frustrated when his father, just before he dies, tells him that all will be explained in going to see someone named Eloise, the path to her which Flavio has laid out in a puzzle the type the two of them loved so much together. But what's worse for Renato is that Flavio has set this puzzle also for Asher, his other son, i.e. Renato's half brother, who, for Renato, was hate at first sight even before knowing they were related. That hate is due to Asher being a seemingly privileged slacker with an absence of understanding the social norms in dealing with people. The questions then become if Renato can endure working through this puzzle with Asher to Flavio and to some extent Pamela's desired end, for her in wanting her future husband to come to terms with his anger issues, and regardless if Renato can make it back to San Miguel de Allende in time for the wedding.—Huggo
