Before we knew Justin Vernon as the force behind Bon Iver, he fronted DeYarmond Edison, a band formed along with his childhood friends Joe Westerlund, Brad Cook, and Phil Cook. Those early recordings by the future indie rock heroes are now getting a proper release with Epoch, a comprehensive box set out August 18th on Jagjaguwar. You can hear a preview now with the single “As Long As I Can Go” b/w “Feel the Light,” along with a remastered version of their 2005 track “Bones.”
Epoch comprises 83 recordings — many of which are being heard outside the band for the very first time — across five LPs and four CDs, dating all the way back to 1998. Along with the music comes a 60,000-word biography from journalist/executive producer/self-described biggest fan Grayson Haver Currin, the collection captures DeYarmond Edison’s evolution from high school rockers who performed as Mount Vernon to their...

Recently premiering in Locarno, Thai filmmaker Sorayos Prapapan’s debut feature “Arnold is a Model Student” is a very interesting narrative amalgam, as it combines his own experiences from attending school (there is even a scene with a same named student repeating the multiplication element as a punishment inside a teacher’s office) with the recent Bad Student movement, and an approach that moves more towards the comedy/satire despite the dramatic basis of the story.
“Arnold is a Perfect Student” screened in Locarno Film Festival
The titular Arnold is a student in the last class of high school, who stands out not just for his shaved hair, but also for having studied in the US for a year and winning a gold medal at the Mathematics Olympiad, something that has deemed him a model student in the eyes of the school administration. His treatment as a star does not only extend to the faculty,...

International premiere of “Flowers of Evil”, Hong Kong “Fagara” as the opening film, and Japanese “Bone Born Bone” at the closure of Five Flavours 13th edition!
This year, as always, the festival will provide an opportunity to discover original voices of young and recognized directors from South Korea, Bhutan, Thailand or Vietnam. We will explore the charms and ills of Japanese peripheries: its harbour cities, outskirts and marginal territories. We will watch films highly appreciated by festival juries. Special consideration will be given to Hong Kong which today is experiencing a serious political crisis: our guest will be Fruit Chan, a star of its independent cinema. However, the Programme has also a place for juicy genre cinema: horror, action, perverse comedies are an ideal remedy for the November weather in Warsaw.
Here is the Programme in its strands:
