A rough subject well told
BandSAboutMovies14 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Inspired by the movie Man Bites Dog, director Yavor Petkov was also able to look to the corruption in his native Bulgaria when he made Danny. Legend. God., saying "Of course, the vast catalogue of outrageous examples of corruption in Bulgaria and beyond helped greatly with the script. It provided markers for me to know what would be too far fetched. For example, if it happened in real life, then I knew I should tone it down from 11 to 3 or 4, so it looks just about plausible on screen."

The titular Danny has agreed to be the subject of a documentary on money laundering, a subject that Petkov also knows well, working in the field of money laundering prevention for a decade. However, he soon tells the crew to forget their script and to just follow him.

Soon, Danny (Dimo Alexiev, who this pictures depends upon; luckily he's an incredibly strong actor) has chased away the reporter who has come for his story, leaving the cameraman and the boom operator to follow him through an increasingly more upsetting day in his life.

Who is Danny? A gangster? A politician? A club owner? A dancer? All of these things? Who shaves their chest with a straight razor and has a bust of themselves on display in their home? What kind of person openly sniffs coke, aardvarks prostitutes and urinates all over the place when they know the camera is running?

This is a film where you're either going to go for the ride and love or love to hate its subject or the entire enterprise will just turn you off. Here's to the filmmakers for creating something so in your face.

Very good surprise!

Very entertaining one man show! A movie that starts out like a comedy, like a satire of the Bulgarian urban folklore, very smoothly transfers into an universal story about complexes, fear and a total failure of one man. Moreover, a creatively used camera creates an atmosphere of intimacy and claustrophobia at the same time.

Excellent indie crime thriller!!

Danny. Legend. God. is a brilliantly intense drama/thriller, and an excellent directorial debut from Petkov. Once you have seen this indie film, it's not hard to understand why it has such a high rating. I love the concept here, the premise, which -as the synopsis says- is the filming of a crime documentary that gets hijacked by the very guy who is the subject being shadowed and interviewed. There might not be a high budgeted actor here, but Alexiev plays the lead role of the unpredictably dangerous Danny better than two A-listers put together, and his performance, along with the script, will take your head off! If you like crime dramas, themes of corruption or the exploration of characters with dark psychological complexities then this is going to hit you with an instant impact, as well as an ongoing slow burn. Creatively shot, constantly engaging, and incredibly suspenseful; it is gems like this that should remind us all that you don't need tons of cash to make a tight movie.

It's a very accurate, daring and fun look at the Eastern European criminal character and the world that surround/enable him.

Unique and Captivating

I love the way this movie is shot. As a spectator you get to sit right next to main character and share his life for a while. It feels so real and even claustrophobic at some point. It almost gets personal between you and Danny. Well done!

It would be *only* fun, if it wasn't real.

Yeah, unfortunately that is the true Eastern Europe. The more you go towards the East, the worse it gets and vice versa. Now the movie: very fresh, very contemporary, very real. Dimo Aleksiev did more than anyone expected from him. I can only imagine where he did his inspiration. I loved the script, I loved the camera work, I loved the acting of main character (top notch!). What I did not like was that the madness and pace were steady throughout the whole movie. There was no culmination and around the middle you already have idea what the MC is capable of and can be hardly surprised. This made me a bit bored of getting a lot from the same the whole time. Nevertheless, It was a fun and gruesome and the director made sure to rub in your face several times the fact that if you want to succeed in this part of the world, you have to be at least similar to Dimo Aleksiev's character.

Thrilling movie

Brilliant performance of Dimo Aleksiev. He made the whole movie! This guy really deserves recognition. The movie is created in a very right way to show this harsh reality in Eastern Europe where people in small towns owns everything and has their own laws. Congrats for the director Petkov!

Fantastic mockumentary-style dark comedy

Great debut by Yavor Petkov! The movie may touch a nerve with some with its too realistic depiction of a corrupt Eastern European politician/gangster. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend this high quality indie production!
