The Easter eggs alone make it worth the watch
ajlister-9300214 February 2021
I love when a rebooted show or movie pays homage to the original. And this did just that. A few minutes into the second season (yes I watched the first one) and I counted at least 4 subtle references to the old show. True fans will see without having to Google. Lol.

It's a different show layout but it has a little of the feel of the original. Enough to keep me watching anyway.

I'm 32 years old and I feel like I'm thrown back to my kid years watching those episodes over and over again. My grandma recorded them for us. Made us super fans.

Give it an open minded, and open eyed, watch and you'll like it. Just don't go in expecting it to be exactly the same as the 90s. That would just be redundant anyway.

Appreciate the updated version because they really gave it a good go!
lharper136-264-5194896 February 2021
Don't know what westsideschl6 is on about, captions are there for this hard-of-hearing lady.

Of course it'll never be as good as the original, no one expected it to be, but it also doesn't need to be compared either as it sits well on its own.

The show is fun, and a pretty great homage to the original we all (well, most of us) grew up with. I can't wait for the next season!

STILL A TREASURE-LOVE WATCHING
mlhare28 September 2021
Seth is a cute kid but annoying. Kind of ruins it for me. I loved it when i was younger and still love it. Episodes still can give me chills. Not sure what happened to the kids from tophat but i liked them and sad they just got rid of them. I hope there are lots more episodes coming!

1983 baby that grew up with Snick On Nick
terminator-mjc3 November 2019
I appreciate the version. I'm glad they didn't do one story for each three limited episodes. I think it's best for this to stay with this one season as a miniseries and not continue it with another chapter or story. I also like the twists it has, too.

The ending song, with singing, I can do without. It's the only part of the show I didn't like.

Great show!
nicolelawrence-1409328 October 2019
I don't know if some of these other reviewers are remembering the original through rose colored glasses or what. I absolutely loved the original as a kid and as soon as I found the dvd's on Amazon, I bought them to re-live with my kids. My kids quickly loved it too, however, I discovered a few episodes that made it apparent that I forgot just how cheesy some of them were. Now to the new. Every time I here of a re-boot or re-make I get the dreaded feeling that despite how much I want to love it, it will suck. Not the case here. Obviously you can't expect it to be identical, but I found the "creepy" level even higher than a lot of the originals! I found the cast to be likeable and the story to be on par with the better ones of the original. People also have to keep in mind, this is geared toward kids. You have to realize that they aren't setting out to be unbearably scary. For creepy entertainment that you can enjoy with your kids, it hits the nail on the head. Only downside is that it appears to be just the three episodes. Hope there are more to come!

While good, there are some issues here...
rhiannon_hoffman14 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
After seeing all three current seasons on Paramont, I have come to find some issues here with this Reboot. This is not like the original in one very significant way - the original was an anthology series and had a different story each episode - save for a few times they did a 2-parter - and except for the 3 part bridge mini series of tale of the Silver Sight; That episode is also the first to go outside the Midnight Societies firepit setting for storymaking and have the Society involved in a true supernatural tale of there own.

So, why do I say this is an issue? While the stories are fine, the actors definetly up to snuff and the effects improved on from the original, the original had the many stories. Having the many different stories, being something of the teens own making as well as providing an entertaining show, gave two fold a creepy fun time and sub-conciously a push to kids who maybe had a story brewing in them to not give up but to get it out, written down and maybe a future carrer even. It had that find line on being something beyond its own self. And, sorry, the new show just don't got it.

Oh, it's fun, but that's all. None of these kids have stories, there just fighting and winning against a force. There is nothing wrong with that, but you really don't need the MIdnight Society reference as this could just be a regular group of kids doing a teen AHS-a different story each season encompassing a supsernatural story(with much much less sex and violence). But that is my issue, I went in wanting Afraid of the Dark and didnt get that. It's not bad, but it makes me feel a bit jilted to it. Should have gone with "Tales from the Dark" and left out the MIdnight Society framing. Also, how many Midnight Societies are there supposed to be-it's a secret society and it's Canadian - Hu-lo-o!

Loved the old show. Hooked on the reboot.
evansk5919 October 2019
Maybe the other reviewer wasn't a true fan, but I love that the show is back on and rebooted to watch with my 10 year old daughter. We got chills at the same time during the second episode. So disappointing to only get a teaser with 3 linked episodes. Please tell me there will be a regular series again.

Great spooky storytelling
desertrose0601-690-5037604 September 2021
Season 1 was great. Season 2 was way too drawn out. It definitely works better then the story is tight and contained. Overall the acting is decent/good and even as an adult, the story spooked me. I do hope they keep going, but I'd prefer they stick to 3 or 4 episodes per story so it doesn't feel so slow in parts like season 2 did.

The original still rules!!!
BatBanks23 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This mini-series is a reboot of nostalgia 90's Nickelodeon anthology series. It more focus on The Midnight Society and one of their story comes real.

Their pros and cons on this mini-series. I like the idea they bring back my favorite childhood show back into Nickelodeon for new generation of kids. My problems is the main villain is not scary and their too focus on the Midnight Society instead focus each one with different stories. It just testing wither they give this a full show or not, My guess now it just a full movie. It nothing wrong with the mini-series it was okay but could've been better.

Warning: Spoilers
I don't know if I liked that there's a backstory. The formula of AYAOTD works. I did like that the mom in the story was one of the members from the original series

Season 2 is not really an AYAOTD season
dizzymediainc6 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
At first glance you may think this is an ayaotd season as it has the general premise, a group of kids tell stories to scare each other. However in this season we seem to have jumped a great deal of time into the future, compared to season 1 (which doesn't really make sense) and the new kids say and do a lot of weird stuff that makes very little sense or never returns later in the show (i.e okay boomer, etc.)

The cast is completely different and for some reason seems even younger than the cast in Season 1.

What's missing? Well everything that makes ayaotd, the campfire, the storytelling, a proper initiation (for the youngest kid), there's just nothing really scary about this season other than the shadow man and he's really goofy looking.

In this season everyone seems to be rather slow, doing everything wrong, never really listening to what people tell them to do or not to do to save their lives and pretty much taking the slowest route to success.

Along the way there's various instances that don't really add up and yea i know it's a kids series but season 1 was not like that at all. Plus the main character is a pouty cry baby and i just can't stand to watch him lol

Season 1 had a much creepier vibe and was more believable in the sense it could actually happen and the scare factor was up there. Season 2 was a lot of screaming, shining flashlights and running around doing random stuff.

Cinematography wise, there were a few nice shots here and there but drowned by the endless and nonsensical actions of the characters.

The last episodes ending was just way too happy go lucky for ayaotd, like everything worked out for everyone and they all got what they wanted, then they all happily skipped through the woods with flashlights, when that defeats the whole experience lol

In short, it's not really an ayaotd series, it wants to be but it feels like a fan made this and i just can't like it, as much as i want to.

Great show!
jill_wooden11 November 2022
I love a good mystery with just enough thriller mixed in, and I think this show is so perfect and a great pick for almost the whole family (except very littles)! I hope it gets renewed for many seasons and would love if the seasons were more easily available. I watched the original series when I was young and I'm now watching the newer series with my children who love it as well! Season 2 is even better than season 1 in my opinion but both are great, looking forward to watch the next and hopefully many more after that! Love the scary stories, the friendship, and having something to bond over as you're growing up.

Make more seasons and episodes, please.
ndorantes26 October 2019
I Ioved every episode.Let the show be longer, make it longer than the original AYAOTD. The show is better than the original. Love the original AYAOTD but the remake is more scarier than it and that's what I like. Nickelodeon this is my favorite show on here now. Please make more episodes and seasons with the same cast members. Thank you.

Wish it was better
I love AYAOTD but since the reboot they do these mini series on the same story and it just seems to drag on.

I wish they were an anthology series again and had more episodes. I really wanted to love this season. We started out so excited but after the 2nd or 3rd episode we lost interest.

To leave on a positive note I will say the graphics are great.

dark_wolf_198715 October 2019

Just awful.
SamUnfiltered197917 September 2020
The acting. The storyline. The worst part was Miya Cech. Unlikable and a horrible actress. Who does she know to get this part? Wasn't on talent. The original is so much better

Wow!
frankperkins-7622521 March 2021
The original show defined the nineties, and when I found out they were revitalizing the show I was excited. My thirty-eight year old self jumped up and down and awaited the opportunity to see how they were going to do it. The original had scares and thrills, and there were episodes that creeped me out. What I adore about the revitalization is that they pay homage to the old series while giving the new one life. There are so many Easter eggs in both seasons. If you were an avid watcher of the original you can spot them. Teens do not have enough scary shows or movies that are devoted strictly to them, and now they have one. The characters are strong, and I find them motivating to young people. You have the outspoken, politically involved girl, to the boy who wants to be a leader yet is being held back by the alpha of the group. You have another one who is the academic, and one who has the heart of gold. Each shows teens how to be an active, and dare say, successful member in today's society. I highly recommend you watch to the very end because there are two surprise cameos. It is a great show for kids and adults alike. The second season brings vibes of IT (tamed down of course) as well as Creature from the Black Lagoon. The only complaint I have is the soap operatic feel to it may bore some much younger audience members. I do think the idea of creating a miniseries for preteens is a great idea. I wish this could expand to an every Friday night event and make it more of a scary/soap for preteens. Older audiences have the CW, but preteens and youngsters revolve around Nickelodeon. If Nickelodeon did this, the show would be a winner for all people alike. This millennial is giving this show a huge thumbs up!!

Thank gawd!
rdoubleoc20 October 2019
Thank God it's back, seriously. Some shows just don't seem right to be gone forever.

First and second episodes were alright, but I hope they go back to the anthology format, even though they kind of still stuck to it.

I also think maybe they should advertise it more. The only reason I even knew about it was because I noticed an old one was on and looked up to see if there ever was a new version, and it just coincidentally happenened to be that now is when there is one.

I'm 35, so my opinion might be different than their normal demographic, so it shows more than just kids will be watching, but I'm sure they know this.

I'll be watching!

Fine, but really not as good as the original
danieln-1552512 October 2019
Just for you to know, some of the biggest hits like "Sixth Sense" (the movie), was taken from an episode of the original AYAOTD (!). Just so you understand what a brilliant script that show had. Now this remake was fine, the first season was fine, however seasons 2-3 - not so much. Keep in mind, they already did some of those stories almost one by one, on the old AYAOTD. So this was ok, but not as good as the original AYAOTD.

Warning: Spoilers
I went into it with no expectations because like many i grew up on SNICK and AYAOTD was the cornerstone series of that tv block every Saturday night. Anywho im not a fan of reboots but i was very impressed with what they did. They didnt just copy the original nor did they go too far off the central theme. The teen characters are great. My only real complaint was how weak the story she told was however now that i get the direction they're taking it in im interested to see what they'll do. 5/5
