Exclusive: Netflix’s film division has preemptively acquired a pitch for an untitled law school thriller from Holland, Michigan‘s Andrew Sodroski, sources tell Deadline.
Netflix could not be reached for comment. While plot details are unknown at this time, the pitch is said to be described as a contemporary spin on The Firm meets The Wolf of Wall Street. Ben Pugh and Peter Dealbert will produce for the L.A. and London-based management and production company 42.
Most recently, 42 worked with Netflix as a producer on its sci-fi actioner Outside the Wire starring Anthony Mackie, which debuted at #1 and was watched by 66 million households in its first quarter on the platform. Sodroski’s pitch marks 42’s second pre-emptive sale in a row on the heels of The Bet, a thriller spec from Enemy‘s Javier Gullón that sold to Warner Bros for what we’re told was a significant figure.

Exclusive: Warner Bros is finalizing a deal to preemptively acquire The Bet, a hot spec from Spanish screenwriter Javier Gullón (Enemy), according to multiple sources.
The studio declined comment. No deal figure was given.
While plot details are under wraps, the project has been described as a twisty, female-led thriller with pitch-black humor, set at a glittering destination for the ultra-rich. Ben Pugh, Peter Dealbert and Josh Varney will produce for 42.
A Goya Award nominee, Gullón is best known for scripting the surreal psychological thriller Enemy for director Denis Villeneuve. Released by A24 in 2014 after world premiering at the Toronto Film Festival, the film starred Jake Gyllenhaal as a man on a quest for his exact look-alike, after spotting him in a movie. Mélanie Laurent, Sarah Gadon, and Isabella Rossellini co-starred.

Back in November of 2021, it was announced that Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea), Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix), and Emily Beecham (Into the Badlands) had signed on to star in Slingshot, a psychological sci-fi thriller coming our way from director Mikael Håfström (Escape Plan). Filming began on December 1st of that year – and more than two years later, we finally have an update to share on Slingshot! The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Bleecker Street has acquired the U.S. distribution rights and are planning to give the film a wide theatrical release at some point before the end of 2024.
Written by R. Scott Adams (Donner Pass) and Nathan Parker (Moon), Slingshot will tell the story of an astronaut struggling to maintain his grip on reality aboard a possibly fatally compromised mission to Saturn’s moon, Titan.
Tomer Capon (The Boys) and The Walking Dead‘s David Morrissey are also in the cast.

Lori Harvey and Damson Idris have gone their separate ways after a little more than one year of dating.
In a joint statement shared exclusively with The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday, Harvey and Idris said, “We are at a point in our lives where our individual paths require our full attention and dedication. We part ways remaining friends with nothing but love and respect for each other and the time we shared together.”
The model and Snowfall star initially sparked dating rumors in December last year when they were spotted leaving a West Hollywood restaurant together.
The following month, the pair seemingly confirmed their romance on social media when Idris shared a photo of them on his Instagram Story. The two could be seen embracing in the photo as the Outside the Wire actor kissed Harvey on the cheek. Idris also wrote in the post, “Happy Birthday Nunu” followed by a red heart emoji.

Five years ago, 42, the British management and production company that counts Nicolas Hoult and Ralph Fiennes among its clients, made its way across the pond. Modeled on U.S. outfits like Entertainment 360 and Anonymous Content, 42 jumped into the crowded territory of American producer-managers, with a Beverly Hills-based office headed by co-founder and manager Josh Varney and producer Ben Pugh.
Early adopters of Netflix, 42’s slate has included streaming features like the highly viewed vampire movie Night Teeth and the sci-fi flick Outside the Wire, starring Damson Idris and Anthony Mackie. Theatrically, there has been the Cuban Missile Crisis drama The Courier, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, and Focus Features’ The Silent Twins, which premiered at Cannes in 2022. On the M&a front, in 2020, 42 sold a minority stake to Lionsgate, and earlier this year, the company acquired Ob, a music video and commercials outfit.

Almost everyone wishes they could win the lottery. Winning could change your life significantly, revealing things about the people closest to you. Keeping quiet about your winnings is an excellent way to roll, especially if you don’t want people coming out of the woodwork for a piece of your action. Once everyone knows you’ve won, harassment is an inevitable byproduct of your financial windfall. What if, upon winning, it was legal for someone to kill you and claim the prize for themselves? That’s the premise for Grand Death Lotto, a new comedy from Paul Feig starring John Cena, Awkwafina, and Simu Liu.

Nine years ago, Universal released a supernatural action comedy called R.I.P.D.: Rest in Peace Department, which didn’t do much at the box office despite starring Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges. Made on a budget somewhere in the 150 million range, R.I.P.D. only earned 78.3 million worldwide. It was considered a bomb… but that hasn’t stopped Universal from making a direct-to-video sequel. Made completely under the radar, the sequel is called R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned – and it has already been screened for the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association, earning a PG-13 rating for “sequences of violence, language, disturbing images and some crude/sexual references“.
According to IMDb, R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned was directed by Paul Leyden (Chick Fight) from a screenplay he wrote with Andrew Klein. Since the film was made in secrecy, a plot...

Peacock has handed a series order to Twisted Metal, a comedic half-hour live-action adaptation of the popular video game, from Sony Pictures TV, Playstation Productions and Universal Television. Anthony Mackie (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) stars and executive produces the project, first announced in September, which is written and executive produced by Cobra Kai writer Michael Jonathan Smith, who will serve as showrunner. Will Arnett and Marc Forman, who secured the rights to the material and helped put the adaptation together, also executive produce via their Electric Avenue production company.
Based on the classic PlayStation game series, Twisted Metal is a high-octane action comedy, based on an original take by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick about a motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Netflix enjoyed surges in subscriber growth throughout 2020 but the streaming company reported a stark slowdown in new subscriptions during its Q1 2021 earnings report. The company reported that it added 3.98 million new subscribers during the fiscal quarter, sharply missing its own forecast for 6 million new subscriber additions during that period.
Though Netflix beat analysts’ financial expectations, the dour subscriber data caused the company’s stock to drop around 10 percent in afterhours trading. The company’s Q1 subscriber data is a stark contrast to Netflix’s Q1 2020 earnings report, when the company added over 15 million subscribers. The company stated that it had 208 million subscribers at the end of Q1 2021.
While Netflix sharply missed its own forecast for subscriber adds in Q1 2021, a subscription slowdown has long been anticipated. Netflix reaped abnormally large subscriber gains throughout 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, which incentivized many consumers to seek indoor entertainment such as streaming services.

Netflix revealed that it will spend over $17 billion on content this year, according to its first-quarter earnings report.
“As we’ve noted previously, the production delays from Covid-19 in 2020 will lead to a 2021 slate that is more heavily second half weighted with a large number of returning franchises,” said the company in its letter to shareholders. “And while the roll out of vaccines is very uneven across the world, we are back up and producing safely in every major market, with the exception of Brazil and India. Assuming this continues, we’ll spend over $17 billion in cash on content this year and we’ll continue to deliver an amazing range of titles for our members with more originals this year than last.”
That’s a notable uptick from the streamer’s 2020 spend of $11.8 billion, as the pandemic prompted production delays across the industry, and a 2019 content spend of $13.9 billion.

In a rare week where no single program exceeded the 1 billion minute threshold, mystery police procedural “Criminal Minds,” a recurring top performer in Nielsen’s regular Weekly Top 10 list, towered over all other programs available on subscription-based streaming platforms with 0.98 million viewing minutes for Jan. 25 through the end of the month. The CBS cult-classic also ended up in the number one slot on Nielsen’s Weekly Top 10 Acquired Content.
In addition to the acquired content list, the global marketing research firm will also be pushing out weekly Top 10 lists that take into consideration original programming and movies in an effort to provide an expanded and more inclusive look at most streamed programs for that given week. First in originals was Shondaland’s first steamy scripted Netflix show “Bridgerton,” which garnered about 0.94 billion minutes of watch time across its only 8 episodes on Netflix. First on movies was 2010’s “The Next Three Days” on Netflix,...

Henry Danger, a popular superhero show on Nickelodeon from 2014 to 2020, saw its first three seasons on Netflix land at No. 4 on Nielsen’s U.S. streaming rankings for January 18 to 24.
Bridgerton repeated at No. 1, collecting 1.06 billion minutes of viewing during the week, its fifth consecutive week past the 1 billion minute mark. Netflix, which again controlled all 10 spots in the rankings, has called the show its best-performing original of all time, and a second season of the Shonda Rhimes period drama is in the works.
Henry‘s strong showing, with 731 million minutes of viewing, comes just weeks before Nickelodeon parent ViacomCBS rebrands streaming service CBS All Access as Paramount+ in a high-profile streaming push. In fact, the show’s first four seasons have been available on CBS All Access, but the Netflix debut came on January 21.

Bridgerton jumped back in front of Cobra Kai to retake the top spot in Nielsen’s U.S. streaming rankings for the week of January 11 to 17, with sci-fi movie Outside the Wire helping Netflix sweep the top 10.
The Shonda Rhimes-produced period romance drew just shy of 1.4 billion total minutes of viewing, outpacing Cobra Kai, which had 1 billion. Netflix has crowned Bridgerton its most-watched original ever, with 82 million global subscriber households sampling it in its first month on the service.
Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer came in third for the week, with 867 minutes of viewing despite the true-crime series having just four episodes. Outside the Wire, a sci-fi movie starring Anthony Mackie, drew 556 minutes of viewing, good for ninth place.
Netflix took up all spots on the top 10, ending a run of weeks where Disney broke through with weekly wins for Pixar film Soul and Star Wars spinoff series The Mandalorian.

Disney Plus’s reality-warping “WandaVision” was one of the 10 most-watched original shows on streaming platforms the week of its debut, according to Nielsen estimates — and with just two episodes released, the Marvel show outpaced the service’s hit “The Mandalorian.”
For the week of Jan. 11-17, Netflix’s “Bridgerton” from Shonda Rhimes’ Shondaland, held the No. 1 spot on Nielsen’s original series streaming chart, followed by “Cobra Kai” on Netflix. Netflix true-crime docuseries “Night Stalker: The Hunt For a Serial Killer” bowed at No. 3.
The turnout for “WandaVision,” starring Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff and Paul Bettany as Vision, was impressive given that Disney Plus had released only the first two episodes as of Jan. 15. The show came in at No. 6, notching an estimated 434 million minutes viewed over its first three days — a promising sign for “WandaVision” to continue attracting a sizable audience over its nine-episode run.
