It would appear that nostalgia isn’t always the best idea since Punky Brewster has, at this time, been canceled on Peacock and there’s no word at this point if anyone is willing to pick her show up yet again to give her another chance. Considering the way the show ended it could be stated that it might have been on a somewhat happy note since Punky was set to adopt Izzy and give the kid a better life. Some might state that they could have predicted this, and it’s fair to say that it might be a good point, but

Punky Brewster's return to TV screens was shorter than anticipated.
Peacock recently shared the sad news that the revival would not be renewed for a second season, and the show's star is opening up about the decision.
Soleil Moon Frye took to Instagram to share behind-the-scenes photos of her time on the series, including many snaps of her co-stars.
In the caption, she expressed gratitude for being able to bring the character back after such a long time away.
"I want to start by saying I love each and every one of you from the depths of my heart," Frye wrote in a message she also sent to those who worked on the show.
"I am so incredibly grateful for all of the beautiful stunning gifts you gave to me and the way in which you touched my heart and so many others."

Peacock has axed the “Punky Brewster” revival after one season.
The series, which saw Soleil Moon Frye reprise her role from the 1980s NBC sitcom of the same name, debuted with its 10-episode first season back in February. The show picked up with Frye’s character Punky as a single mother of three trying to get her life back on track after separating from her husband and taking in a foster child.
In addition to Frye, the “Punky” revival also brought back Cherie Johnson from the original series, adding franchise newcomers Freddie Prinze Jr., Quinn Copeland (Izzy), Noah Cottrell (Diego), Oliver De Los Santos (Daniel) and Lauren Lindsey Donzis (Hannah).
The show becomes the second Peacock series to face cancellation following the streamer’s “Brave New World” adaptation.

The show that taught 1980s kids not to hide in an abandoned old refrigerator — or, at the very least, learn CPR in case one of your friends does sneak into one of those scary old latch iceboxes — will not continue with its revival. The updated “Punky Brewster,” which Peacock brought back as part of the streamer’s first-year lineup, will not be renewed for more episodes.
Peacock debuted all 10 episodes of the new “Punky Brewster,” featuring original star Soleil Moon Frye (who also served as an executive producer), on Feb. 25. The show reunited Frye as Punky with her old friend Cherie (Cherie Johnson), and updated her story to focus on Punky raising her three kids after separating from her husband (Freddie Prinze Jr.). A photographer like her foster dad Henry in the original series, Punky brings a foster child, Izzy (Quinn Copeland), into her home.

Peacock has opted not to renew Punky Brewster for a second season. The followup to the 1984 sitcom was headlined by the original series’ star Soleil Moon Frye reprising her role as the titular character who became a pop culture staple of the 1980s.
Punky Brewster, which premiered in February, was among the first original series on NBCU’s streamer Peacock alongside fellow NBC sitcom revival Saved By the Bell and two other comedy series, Rutherfold Falls and Girls5Eva, all of which have been renewed for a second season.

The Hatfields versus the McCoys. Thomas Edison versus Nikola Telsa. DC versus Marvel. Dogs versus cats. … Well, maybe dog people versus cat people.
Great rivalries can inspire creative competition, breed history-making moments and teach those watching the rivalry play out a lot about themselves in the process. All too often, they also cause people to “pick a side” and declare themselves on one team or the other.
Take Netflix’s dueling docuseries “Dogs” and “Cat People,” for example: Launching on July 7, the second season of the former features four episodes dedicated to remarkable dogs (and their pet parents) from Butler University’s mascot Butler Blue to NASA astronaut Leland Melvin’s viral Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Meanwhile, also launching on July 7, the latter series debuts with six episodes focused on felines and their not-as-furry human companions, including rapper Moshow, Wakuneco artist Sachi and trainer Samantha Martin of the Amazing Acro-Cats. Bonner appeared in 88 of the 90 episodes of “WKRP in Cincinnati,” which aired for four seasons from 1978-82. He also directed six episodes of the sitcom, which followed the misadventures of the staff of a struggling rock radio station in Cincinnati. Peacock has quite the treat for us this summer.
The streaming service has announced that its highly-anticipated new drama series Dr. Death will be available to stream Thursday, July 15.
Based on Wondery’s hit podcast, Dr. Death is inspired by the terrifying true story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch (Joshua Jackson), a rising star in the Dallas medical community.
Young, charismatic, and ostensibly brilliant, Dr. Duntsch was building a flourishing neurosurgery practice when everything suddenly changed.
Patients entered his operating room for complex but routine spinal surgeries and left permanently maimed or dead.
As victims piled up, two fellow physicians, neurosurgeon Robert Henderson (Alec Baldwin) and vascular surgeon Randall Kirby (Christian Slater), as well as Dallas prosecutor Michelle Shughart (AnnaSophia Robb), set out to stop him.
The series explores the twisted mind of Dr. Duntsch and the failures of the system designed to protect the most defenseless among us.
It explores the ‘why’ behind Dr.

Actor-director Phill Lewis has decades of experience in the sitcom space, primarily focused on live-action comedy. This television season alone he has directed episodes of Netflix’s “Mr. Iglesias,” CBS’ “B Positive,” the “Punky Brewster” and “iCarly” continuation series, and the still-to-be-scheduled “Head of the Class” reboot. But, the Covid-19 pandemic gave this industry veteran a first: directing animation with “One Day at a Time’s” “The Politics Episode.”
How different was your process to prep for “The Politics Episode” than a live-action one?
The most important part was knowing the actors as well as I did. I think that really helped alleviate any stress going from live-action to animation because I knew what their wheelhouse was. My live-action system is getting the scripts, reading through and figuring out blocking before the table read so that when I’m standing in front of the actors I’m able to say,...

It turns out, believe it or not, that “The Office” is a pretty popular show. Comcast stated in its Q1 2021 earnings report that the acclaimed sitcom was a key factor in boosting NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service during the company’s most recent fiscal quarter.
Peacock, which launched nationally in July 2020, surpassed 42 million sign-ups during the fiscal quarter, meaning that the streaming service courted around 9 million new users since the company’s last earnings report. As before, there’s a caveat to the latest statistic: Peacock is one of the few major streaming services that has a free ad-supported tier, as well as two premium tiers that cost $4.99 per month and $9.99 per month. Comcast did not specify how many of Peacock’s users were subscribed to each of the streaming service’s subscription tiers and it is unclear how much ad revenue Comcast has reaped from the bump in users.

Linda Perry may have been writing hits for Adele, Christina Aguilera, and Pink, but it’s been over a decade since the former 4 Non Blondes front woman has released original music that she sang herself. “The Letter” is a deeply moving song that she wrote for the soundtrack of Soleil Moon Frye’s new Hulu documentary, Kid 90. The doc also includes snippets of home movie footage featuring Perry’s wife Sara Gilbert, who’s a friend of the Punky Brewster child star and was starring in Roseanne at the time.

Soleil Moon Frye has been a staple on our television screens for the last thirty years plus years. The young actress would steal American hearts as Punky Brewster, which aired on NBC from 1984 to 1986. The show would spawn a cartoon called It’s Punky Brewster and aired right around the same time as Punky Brewster stardom. You might ask yourself or your friends, whatever happened to that girl that played Punky Brewster? Well, Punky Brewster herself has all those answers and much more in the film Kid 90, which she also directed. My wife and I sat down a week ago and watched Kid A. I was instantly hooked in on the film because I recognized an Eddie Vedder song during the opening. Not only does Soleil have great taste in music, but she was also a little J. Edgar Hoover because she filmed and documented her life for years and years.

Photo: ‘Kid 90’ - Will Smith and Mark Wahlberg/Hulu Many of us have tried to keep a diary at various points in our lives, probably quitting after a few days--Soleil Moon Frye evidently never had this problem. The former child star, known for her leading titular role in the ‘80s sitcom ‘Punky Brewster’, meticulously recorded and preserved not only all of her written childhood diary entries but also her voicemails and camcorder footage that she shot candidly throughout her adolescence in the 1990s--20 years later, she’s assembled this priceless archival treasure trove in her new Hulu documentary ‘Kid 90’. The title, of course, refers to the fact that Moon Frye didn’t grow up in your typical American household--she came of age amid the ‘90s Hollywood child actor bubble. Thus, ‘Kid 90’ promises to not only be exploitation of nostalgia, but also to examine the lifestyle and...

Another week, another step toward the world as we knew it before Covid-19, thanks to nationwide vaccination efforts and the gradual reopening of theaters. A week after New York cinemas cautiously reopened, Los Angeles plans to do the same, and distributors are serving up movies they’d kept on the sidelines to serve the venues that have suffered so greatly this past year — although after last week’s deluge, this one brings a pretty meager menu of new releases.
Perhaps most tantalizing is Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Human Voice,” starring Tilda Swinton. Sony Pictures Classics is releasing the 30-minute short film, which debuted at the Venice Film Festival (one of 2020’s few in-person events), in just a handful of theaters, along with a fresh restoration of the Spanish master’s “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.” That means audiences can come just for a short, social-distanced experience (ducking...

At only 8-years-old Soleil Moon Frye picked up millions of fans and inspired countless other kids through her titular leading role in NBC sitcom “Punky Brewster.” She was starting to grow up around cameras, and when that show came to an end three and a half years later, while she continued to act, she also picked up an audio recorder and eventually a video camera to begin documenting everything from fun with her celebrity friends at theme parks to intimate conversations and musings on life. As the reality television genre began to take root in the industry, Frye’s recordings were kept just for her, “locked away” for more than two decades. But four years ago things changed.
Around that time, Frye tells Variety, she began to question if the way she remembered certain moments and events from her life really happened the Way she remembered them. Most people in...

Soleil Moon Frye became the ultimate Eighties child star on Punky Brewster, at the age of seven. She played America’s favorite wise-cracking moppet, wearing mismatched high-tops and extolling the virtues of Punky Power. The show was eventually cancelled in 1988 — and that’s when Frye started toting a video camera around, filming her other child-star friends, just in time for their awkward teen years. Kid 90, a new documentary that begins streaming on Hulu today, turns her home-movie footage into a time capsule of show-biz kids growing up in Nineties Hollywood.

By the time she turned 13, “Punky Brewster” star Soleil Moon Frye had done more to impact pop culture than most Americans will in their lifetime. But once the show was canceled in 1988, things stalled. That’s roughly when Frye started carrying a video camera practically everywhere she went, documenting a one-in-a-million adolescence that was anything but the squeaky-clean, always-sunny sitcom that had made her famous. Nor will it seem very relatable to those who idolized the fellow celebs she called friends, even if you spent the decade with their faces pinned to your walls.
With “Kid 90,” Frye opens “Pandora’s box” — as she calls the archive of video cassettes, diary entries, answering machine messages and so forth that she kept locked away for more than 20 years — bracing herself for what she might find, and how those memories might make her feel. The resulting film, which hits Hulu amid a...

Four years ago, Soleil Moon Frye cracked open what she calls her vault, a collection of Tupperware containers filled with journals, photos, ephemera and hundreds of hours of audio and video recordings.
Moon Frye, 44, wasn’t sure what she’d discover by digging through the items that had been in storage 20-plus years or how it would make her feel. The first iteration of Punky Brewster didn’t deal with sexuality because, well, they were kids and it was the 1980s.
But now the sitcom has splashed back into our lives as a Peacock update starring an adult Soleil Moon Frye as the titular character and Cherie Johnson as her forever bestie Cherie. And fans get to see a divorced mother of three foster a fourth child while dipping her toe in the dating pool. Punky also co-parents with her former hubby Travis (Freddie Prinze Jr.), and they still dig each other, even if they can’t really act on those lovey-dovey vibes.

Are we having fun yet? A limited series follow-up to “Party Down” is in development at Starz.
The network announced that it is “reviving the party” with the development of this upcoming six-part “Party Down” limited series. The use of “reviving” implies that the original cast will be returning. However, at this time no official cast announcements have been made.
“At the end of 2019, the ‘Party Down’ cast and producers were all reunited at a retrospective for the show hosted by Vulture. We had such a good time that we wanted to find a way to get the team back together again,” said executive producer Rob Thomas. “The cast is so busy these days that finding a window where we can do it may require trigonometry, but we’re determined to make it happen.”

Some actors spend their whole lives trying to separate themselves from the roles that made them famous. But Soleil Moon Frye doesn’t roll like that.
Frye was eight years old when her titular sunny role as Punky Brewster turned her into the pig-tailed playmate kids loved having around in the ’80s. Now that she’s all grown up with kids of her own, Frye says the Peacock revival has allowed her to tap into a wave of nostalgia she likely shares with fans.

(Warning: This post, first published on Feb. 25, contains spoilers for Episode 6 of Peacock’s “Punky Brewster.”)
The “Punky Brewster” revival launched all 10 of its Season 1 episodes Thursday on Peacock, introducing fans of the classic ’80s sitcom to a grownup Punky (played by original star Soleil Moon Frye) and her family of three unique kids — Hannah (Lauren Lindsey Donzis), Diego (Noah Cottrell) and Daniel (Oliver De Los Santos) and one very involved ex husband, Travis (Freddie Prinze Jr). That group gets an extra addition in the pilot, when Punky decides to walk in her adoptive father’s footsteps and foster a little girl named Izzy (Quinn Copeland).
And the love and support Punky shows by bringing one more kid into her big blended family is just the beginning of the compassion she gives her kids throughout the revival — including a difficult storyline for her youngest son, Daniel, in Episode 6, titled “The Look of Daniel.

Hopefully March will bring respite from crippling snow storms and frigid temperatures for much of the globe. And if it doesn’t? Well, Hulu’s got some new streaming options at least!
Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2021 are relatively slight on Hulu originals. Thankfully, one beloved original of note is coming back this month. Solar Opposites will premiere all episodes of its second season on March 26. This sci-fi animated comedy from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland is a breath of fresh alien air.
On the movie side of things, Hulu is premiering Boss Level on March 5. This actioner will star the delightful Frank Grillo and the decidedly less delightful Mel Gibson. Speaking of delightful though, the documentary Kid 90 will arrive on March 12. This comes from Punky Brewster star Soleil Moon Frye and features hours of footage she shot in the ’90s that will depict what...

Peacock's Punky Brewster Revival Premiere: Grade Soleil Moon Frye's Ability to Turn Our World Around
Different colored Chucks, a pair of overalls and a bandana or two is all the beloved title character in Peacock’s Punky Brewster revival needed to get back in touch with the rainbow-tinted-sunshine kind of girl she used to be.
That’s because this Punky (reprised by Soleil Moon Frye) is all grown up as a divorced mother of three who put so much into her marriage to onetime husband Travis (Freddie Prinze Jr.) that she lost touch with the playfulness that made her so gosh darn winsome. Exclusive: One of the most anticipated new series on Paramount+, iCarly, is undergoing a behind-the-scenes leadership change.
Jay Kogen has stepped down as executive producer and co-showrunner on the new iteration of the 2007-12 Nickelodeon comedy. Fellow executive producer/co-showrunner Ali Schouten remains on board; it is unclear whether the series will bring in a new co-showrunner.
According to sources, comedy veteran Kogen and iCarly star Miranda Cosgrove did not click creatively, and those creative differences ultimately led to his departure.
iCarly is described by Paramount+ as a new chapter for the most successful kids’ sitcom of all time, where original cast members Miranda Cosgrove, Nathan Kress and Jerry Trainor join new friends for a look at these characters’ present-day lives, adventures and comedic mishaps.

In 1984 audiences were enchanted by the bright- eyed — and quirkily named — Punky Brewster. Abandoned by her parents, the original NBC iteration of “Punky Brewster” followed the titular character, played with charm by Soleil Moon Frye, as she and her dog lived life with her foster dad, the crotchety but loving Henry (George Gaynes).
The original “Punky Brewster” ran for just four seasons with an abrupt cancellation in 1988. Though popular in the way most nostalgic 1980s series are today, the show never sustained a massive following like “Full House,” sticking in audiences’ minds more for its memorable title and bonkers “very special episodes,” including one about the dangers of being locked in a refrigerator. That being said, the series did connect with fans who had been through the foster system, remaining one of the only sitcoms to discuss foster care.

This pandemic has people everywhere in a funk. But as vaccinations are rolled out and hope looms on the horizon, is a trailer-touting “funky Punky” the nostalgic lift that frazzled parents, sentimental fans, and a new wave of younger viewers need? Peacock certainly seems to think so.
The 10-part “Punky Brewster” revival dropped Feb. 25 on the streaming service, which has already seen early success in the nostalgia department with its “Saved By the Bell” reimagining. However while the latter project, which was recently renewed for a second season, leans heavily on new characters and offers only glimpses of beloved figures past, “Punky Brewster” remains all about its protagonist. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Soleil Moon Frye has always had the ability to capture audiences, with her real-life optimism spilling over into the character she first popularized when she was eight years old. That Pollyanna outlook remains an...

’90s kids, may we present the nostalgia-inducing trailer for Soleil Moon Frye’s (“Punky Brewster”) documentary, “kid 90.”
Watch the trailer via the video above.
As a teenager in the ‘90s, Frye carried a video camera everywhere she went, documenting hundreds of hours of footage and then locked it away for over 20 years. After all this time, “kid 90” unlocks the vault and presents a true time capsule of a group of friends growing up in Hollywood and New York City in the ‘90s, balancing childhood and fame pre-internet and social media explosion, according to Hulu’s description of the doc.
At one point in the “kid 90” trailer, Frye talks about developing early: “People were calling me ‘Punky Boobster,'” she said. “Men treated me more like a woman and not a 13-year-old.”

Let’s begin this review of Peacock’s new Punky Brewster with a taxonomy of nostalgic TV reboots.
There are reboots that exercise progressive nostalgia. Those shows use elements of the original to attempt something new and meta within a modern world. Peacock’s recent Saved By the Bell only occasionally lived up to its aspirations, but isolated the things that were best about the original and used what didn’t work to build out a post-modern reflection on class and gender in the sitcom format.
