Sex & Nudity

  • A young teenage girl shows her friends the box of condoms that her mom hides in the dresser. She gets one out and makes mild jokes about it (my hand fits inside, waves hello, etc.)
  • The main character is watching television alone, changes the channel, and sees a sexual scene. We see only some seconds, and the screen is very grainy. A woman's buttocks are visible, and you hear some breathing. Our main character looks a little confused and uncomfortable. Min. 0:43:00-0:43:40
  • Dialogue throughout the film by young preteen and teen schoolgirls about bras, making out with boys, etc. Nothing explicit, but sexuality is a major topic.
  • Two girls gossip during gym exercises about a classmate's bouncing breasts. They say it is disgusting that her nipples are visible through her clothes.
  • The preteen main character showers in a couple of scenes. We only see from the shoulders up, but in one scene she looks at her reflection (at the rest of her body, but the camera does not show this).
  • In one scene the girls have to undress to be examined. The main character doesn't have a bra, so she covers herself with her hand. Her breasts are not shown (only covered and from the side).
  • The girls go to a night club where a young teenage boy nervously asks two of them if they want to "hook up" or to dance. (The Spanish is a little more vague, also meaning "make out.")
  • The girls stand at a bus stop, reading a suggestive book, and the bus stop wall lists sexually transmitted infections including herpes, gonorrhea, and hepatitis B. In another scene they discuss the danger of contracting AIDS. Minute 0:31:30
  • The main character is watching television with her mother and the talk show guest makes sexual remarks: that he is feeling warm with all the pretty girls behind him, and that his question for them is not a question but advice, to "put it on him." Minute 0:08:20-0:08:45

Violence & Gore

  • A little blood is seen on a girl's uniform after she is injured at school. Not a serious injury.

Profanity

  • Discussion of whether one girl called her mother a whore.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Six young teenage girls furtively share a cigarette outside. One or two of them refuse. The scene is less than 2 minutes, starting at 0:25:00. The main character later in her room pretends to be smoking.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Only mildly distressing, emotionally. The main character's mother is busy and from the beginning the main character feels neglected. She also is called an orphan and doesn't know about her father or her grandparents. Minor emotional bullying at school (by a teacher) and by a friend's older sister make her feel insecure.
