Well paced (so far) and well shot: the writing is good.

I was reluctant to watch this but in the end I gave into the BBC hype and loved it. The accents are a bit hard to understand (thankfully, I recently watched Blood on channel 5 which helped) so you might benefit from subtitles until you get used to the accents
So far, it has been the story of young love, egos and that first kiss which we can all remember or resonate with.
My only qualm is why is based in Southern Ireland (apart from the financing of the show) when BBC are making it? Surely, our licence fee money would be better spent promoting Northern Ireland.
I excitedly, look forward to the next episode
Episode 1

An adaptation of Sally Rooney's Young Adult novel for BBC III. This is a mature and sensitive look at first love for that channel.
Episode 1 was directed by Lenny Abrahamson who was Oscar nominated for Room.
Set in a small town in the west of Ireland. Marianne is clever but mouthy at school, she is not popular.
In contrast Connell is popular, he plays Gaelic Football and is good at it.
They are two people who might not form a relationship but Marianne and Connell's lives cross outside of school. His mum is a cleaner for her family. They kiss but Connell does not want anyone at school to know about them.
In that way his relationship remains a secret.
Not knowing much about the novel, I understand that their relationship will span some years, this might explain why both characters looked a little old to be at school.
It was a good first episode which moved swiftly in its 30 minutes time slot.

a oasis

First , was the fame of series as bait , in my case. Then, this episode , admirable crafted in all senses, from performances, to dialogues and atmosphere.
At first sight, a high school story from rural Ireland. This is, in fact, the encouraging premise and the basic source of seduction. Because all is so simple, precise crafted and clear than you feel it exactly the series who you expect from long time.
It is just a wise made series and the contrast - and complementarity of Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar - Jones, the questions about authority of teachers, the sportif succes , the different social differences are just fair ingredients of this series representing a very useful oasis in the run of series to impress.
