An adaptation of Sally Rooney's Young Adult novel for BBC III. This is a mature and sensitive look at first love for that channel.
Episode 1 was directed by Lenny Abrahamson who was Oscar nominated for Room.
Set in a small town in the west of Ireland. Marianne is clever but mouthy at school, she is not popular.
In contrast Connell is popular, he plays Gaelic Football and is good at it.
They are two people who might not form a relationship but Marianne and Connell's lives cross outside of school. His mum is a cleaner for her family. They kiss but Connell does not want anyone at school to know about them.
In that way his relationship remains a secret.
Not knowing much about the novel, I understand that their relationship will span some years, this might explain why both characters looked a little old to be at school.
It was a good first episode which moved swiftly in its 30 minutes time slot.
