Wonderful, funny look at the trans and on-binary
musdirlynn-760-7131874 January 2020
This delightful show sheds light on the issues of transgender and non-binary humans. It shows the discriminations they face from the world at large, and also within the LGBTQ+ community. Doing so with a light touch and never taking itself too seriously. It also addresses the very real issues of love with an age gap, which the world seems to have no problem with as long as it is an older heteronormative male and a younger heteronormative female. Any other arrangement is looked on as abhorrent. Not so here.

Tune in. You will laugh, and giggle and 1/2 later you will be thinking about what you just watched!!

A nice surprise
annieinseoul9 December 2019
I found this skimming through Showtime and watched it on a whim. This is an honest and moving story of a woman searching for meaning. It's refreshing to see more representation of people who are LGBTQ and not traditionally "Hollywood looks."

How does this show not have a higher rating !!
domenicapalumbo18 December 2019
When I saw a 5.2 rating I couldn't believe it. I thought this show was so funny and was looking forward to binge watching it and found out it had only two episodes out. oh well I can wait. I laughed so hard the first two episodes and cannot wait to see another episode!

Wonderful, fresh, important
jamdetroit11 December 2019
Loved the pilot, can't wait to see more! This show has a great bit of dark humor, heart, and realness. There isn't any show quite like it that I've seen. Seems like its going to be built for anyone who has ever felt lost in the shuffle. Good work to all involved!

What are we reviewing?
stevesmartpoetry11 December 2019
I gave episode #1 a 10. That's all I have to go on so far so I won't rate the entire series. But a great start! My question of 'what are we reviewing?' comes largely from the angrily negative reviews that have written off a show as it's barely begun because a) lesbians, b) hated The L Word (so what?) and c) something about left wingers (aww you care enough to keep us in fresh spittle). My gender, my politics and my sexuality are irrelevant to whether I think this show has the potential to be clever, inventive and original. I do, on each count and I'm enthusiastic about seeing more. So are you reviewing this show on its merits, or are you watching to justify the hate you already feel? 'Cause that's really pretty sad, if you are.

Much Better Than Expected
plasticanimalz8 January 2020
I saw the trailer and it didn't particularly peak my interest but then I read two reviewers on L Word: Generation Q say this was much better, so, I gave it a try. And, that is true, Work In Progress is leaps better. The first episode reminded me of Curb Your Enthusiasm, a bit, but as the episodes go along it kind of becomes its own thing. It's part humor, part exploring the main character's relationship, and part her general life, which sometimes gets a bit dark. It's cute. I watched 5 episodes in 2 days and they were easy to binge through as they're only 20-some minutes long.

Though Abby doesn't seem like your typical lead in a TV show, she's a good actress, has a dry humor that really got me laughing sometimes, and does a pretty good job of carrying the series. The writing is pretty good and moves along at a nice pace. I would say in some places I could see where she could add some more humor. I feel that is her strongest point, though, like I said, I am interested in the other elements they've introduced so far in the series.

I think she does a nice job of introducing the trans community which she explores in some of the episodes. It's nice to see a real portrayal and not what I've typically seen from straight white writers trying to show how woke they are but clearly have no friends or family of diversity, like they're simply checking off a box. It's very splaining and is suuuper irritating. I also felt like Abby never gets super preachy about the trans or lesbian community. She kind of says her peace about what irritates her, then moves on, or adds humor to give some sugar with the medicine.

Her costars do a good job and are funny, likable actors. I like Abby's sister, and Campbell really stands out. She's very entertaining. Kind of reminds me of the mom from That 70's Show. Funny and likable. Abby's brother-in-law also does a good job as the likable but somewhat checked-out husband.

Abby's therapist storyline was very funny. That was my favorite part thus far in the show. Very clever. I think it's a show that despite your origin, is entertaining. I will definitely recommend it to friends.

Ignore the 1 star reviews. Clearly given by people who can't possibly understand how a show might not actually be FOR them.
helloiamkoolaidness16 December 2019
It's so vapidly clear that the 1 star reviews are coming from people who can't stand the idea of a completely queer show that doesn't cater to cis straight people. How could they possibly handle not having a straight person in sight for 30 min of their day right?? Oh, it's ok if the queer people are the societal definition of "sexy." But If a show actually has realistic looking queer people in it, showing real queer experiences then blech, it shall only be deemed worth 1 star!

Well let me tell you. As a queer dyke with depression myself, I have never felt more seen or represented on screen. The low ratings on this show are a representation of the heteronormative society we STILL live in.

Not a perfect show
HallowedEve19 July 2020
The reviews are either 10s saying it is brilliant or 1s bashing LQBTQ people, but I don't think it was genius and I am not homophobic. The fact is it is different, but really flawed. I almost shut it off right away when she starts off with an annoying "whaaazzzzzz up". That isn't funny, and not cute from a 45 year old (by the way, 45 isn't old, but she is going to tell you over and over it is). I kept watching because the one thing she gets right is that Chris really is gorgeous, and I was hoping his character would develop and we learn more about him, but we never do. We never get past Abby and her endless issues, which she makes everyone's problem all the time. She wields her never ending list of mental problems like a weapon, and then wonders why she can't find a successful relationship. Her constant mania, drunkenness and loudness gets grating, and I never can figure out why Chris would have given her a second look, or Melody either, but that is because you never find out anything about them. I felt nothing between Chris and Abby and never believed their relationship. Dear Abby, Pat didn't ruin your life, you did. Once Chris finally gets that he's out....and so am I.

Addicting
armyret23 December 2019
I didn't want to stay up and watch the first episode but from the first few minutes, I couldn't put it away! The characters are so real and so down to earth and just downright fun that I wish it was an hour per episode instead of 30 minutes!

Exceptionally unpleasant for something that's supposed to be a "Comedy"
steve_t50918 February 2020
I'll admit it had very funny moments. Stuff that made me laugh out loud, and often caught me by surprise.

But at the end of the day, and the end of the season, it's a discouraging story, with a discouraging ending. Generally, dark comedies show a humorous and sustaining message that hope is always possible, even when things seem their worst. This just says that it's all pointless and hopeless.

Brutally honest, dark, queer humor
tnhand1022-430-25554722 December 2019
Wow, I've never had the experience of a show created by, written by, and starred in by someone who actually represents me. It was so relatable & hysterically funny. I can't wait for more episodes!

Obviously this has been review-bombed & that's really unfortunate. I sincerely hope this show catches the attention of the queer community, and that it gets a second season!

So far so good!
carolsalaz9 December 2019
This show hilarious and super relatable. It's nice to see other depictions of lesbians who are not for the male gaze and overly attractive. And so far I enjoyed how tough issues like suicide and mental illness is spurred in with comedy! I'd say it's a fun watch.

OMG they aren't hot lesbians so rate it 1 star!
madhouserevival8 December 2019
I didn't know if I was going to like this. I've never heard of of Abby McEnany. Apparently, she's been in some unreviewed and possibly unsuccessful tv series, I can't really find much information about her at all. But this show proves she's a force to be reckoned with if given the chance. She's very self-effacing in the show and she just shines as an actress.

The performances by all the actors involved is so organic and natural and demonstrates how comfortable the actors are with themselves. The relationships they have with each other is wholly believable. But I mostly would like to point out that this show has some wonderfully funny bits that just take you by surprise--as humor should. It's only about 23 minutes long yet seems to cram a lot of meat into the meal.

Abby is one of the writers and I don't know who to give the most credit to for the funniest bits, but I'm sure the relatively unknown director also has a hand in it. He's doing a really fine job on this show so far. I'm glad that Showtime gave it a shot for all the world to see. This is a great show. Ignore the bigots and naysayers and right wing Republicans who can't stand the fact that LGBT members are important, too.

Yay, another show about a miserable person....
CKM223 July 2021
I keep seeing this show advertised on YouTube. Is there anything more peak 2020's than a show about a completely miserable, completely self involved lgbtq+ person? How is this appealing? Yes, please, I want to watch a person whine about how miserable they are for an hour. Here's some advice - You don't want to be miserable anymore? Stop being so self involved, stop thinking everything is about you, your feelings, how you haven't been given enough. Get married, have children and make your life not all about yourself and find out how much happier you will be.

Heartwarming and real
emilyundimmed4 January 2020
This show is so FUNNY! It's just lovely. It celebrates the LGBTQ+ community and breaks down stigmas. It's something that all of us can relate to in some way, has a killer cast, and always makes me laugh. Highly recommend

Loved season 1; season 2 not so much
somethingreal8127 October 2021
Season 1 was brilliant and insightful with a lot of laugh out loud moments. Season 2, though, didn't seem to know what it wanted to be about with no narrative momentum and, frankly, not much to say. I'm hoping it finds its groove again if it comes back for a third season.

Brilliant and funny unless you're a conservative
sammarble11 December 2019
I laughed out loud more times in 30 minutes than I have at any tv show in recent memory and I'm straight, working class woman. I'm only writing this because I thought there were some really ridiculous reviews on here saying it was bad. If your views are more conservative or subcultures trigger you than don't watch it. It's not for you. Don't ruin good, authentic comedy for the rest of us.

I'm a lesbian and this made me physically angry to watch
violetr-3402122 August 2022
This show tries way too hard to be funny, the humor mostly being a narcissistic main character acting like a child and way over the top. I was excited for some queer representation but it wasn't what I was hoping for. All the characters and storylines are MASSIVE caricatures and stereotypes of queer women and their lives and it made me so pissed every time I watched it.
