Worth seeing.
Sleepin_Dragon2 June 2022
I was expecting an outlandish American horror from the description, I wasn't expecting an Irish movie about witchcraft and family woes.

I was expecting to see a few negative reviews, calling this out for being slow and boring, personally I would ignore them, and go into this with an open mind.

This film is deep, well measured, and very atmospheric. The story builds slowly, as does the action, naturally there's a crescendo at the end.

Very well acted, nicely filmed, and some nice, thoughtful, gritty visuals.

I was quite impressed with this, it held my attention, it surprised, and I liked the storyline, 7/10.

Good film.
Horror_Flick_Fanatic21 April 2022
I really enjoy these independent horror films based on Celtic / Irish folklore. They have the things I feel that make a great horror tale. They have foreshadowing, crescendoing tension, atmosphere, drama and spirituality. Is this one as good as Witch or Hereditary, no. But it is definitely better than the one millionth remake of exorcist and demon possession films. Far better than a abysmal slasher film.

I really hope filmmakers look for more terror inducing folklore from past cultures. These really make good topics for horror enthusiasts. Okay, not all horror film fanatics are the same. But I definitely prefer this style of horror.

As for this film, I feel all of the actors gave very good performances. It's definitely worth a watch.

Good non gore horror film
broman-2942926 March 2022
It's not boring at all!! This film has good quality, great acting, very good cast and nicely directed, that's a lot for a horror movie. Don't expect anything gore or special effects (it has some though) it has some subtle scares and it's very enjoyable.

Irish horror, folklore cross done well.
fionna-bermingham2 April 2022
Unlike some other reviews suggest: this movie is not boring. And Samhain / Halloween was most certainly around in Ireland and celebrated with bonfires etc. A long, long time before this movie was set.

In my opinion, You Are Not My Mother is a simple, atmospheric horror movie. It has the feel of the Samhain / Halloween time of year in Ireland. For the most part the acting is strong. I found the scenes between the mother and daughter to be unsettling in a quiet way; which made them all the more frightening.

It is edge of your seat from opening scenes to the end credits? No. Does it scream big budget, with lots of effects? No.

But it doesn't need to. It does a damn good job of marrying folklore / mythology with horror, while also touching on the subjects of mental health and family relationships.

A slow one but dont expect too scary scenes too pop .

Warning: Spoilers
This movie i dont rate it bad or good but lies between both. But it covers good on topics of teenage bullying and a backstory how she got the burn. But the movie moves solwly for a 1hr 30mins flick revolving around char and her teen life and her mom occasionally giving weird bad vibes which was actually scary but ended on a whimper like most bad movies do where the good guy warns not to let the evil out but you got to Right!!!.

Hmm....... I don't know......

After I watched this, it had me questioning if there is a deeper meaning to the movie rather than just what I saw. I think there is. I think this film makes the audience feel what it is like, to suffer with a serious mental illness. The movie is dark, ominous and eyrie. Throughout the entire 90 minutes it makes you exhausted waiting for something to happen. The film is disturbing in it's own way. Definitely worth a watch. But be prepared to feel unclean after and to be thinking about this movie for the next few months. Strong 5.

Good surprise
PedroPires908 July 2022
A good surprise. With a good story and full of important themes, the film is elevated by the talented cast and the very secure direction of Dolan (quite impressive for a debut).

It's not a terrifying horror film, maybe it even works better as a drama sometimes, but you always feel the tension in the air supported by a strong score and a naturally grey lighting (c'mon, more films in the UK and Ireland, this climate is perfect for horror 🤣).

Too slow for its own good
pasaribuharisfadli4 April 2022
I don't mind slow-burn horror, especially if it has deep nuances, interesting plot points, and a captivating atmosphere. You Are Not My Mother has some of those qualities, but driving at a really snail's pace apparently only makes the film has difficulties living up to its promising build-up.

Can I be your Mother
ethanarmstrongfilm20 July 2022
What a great hidden gem of a film which needs to be heard a lot more. Hazel Doupe plays an amazing role as Char and the connection between her and her 'so called mother' was astonishing. The way you could tell Char loved Angela so much and the agony she had to say "You are not my Mother" must of really hurt.

If anybody wants to see it go watch it on Netflix whilst you have the chance. The only reason I ranked it 7 star is because I didn't feel that scared for a horror and felt more of thriller.

It really shows how mental illness on parent can affect their loved ones especially their children.

What a movie! Slow progression of the story and predicted end! Worth watching if you're only having nothing else in the earth to do!! You may feel nauseated but not really scared.

Don't believe the bad reviews. Very good flick.
Labowski698 April 2022
This is a real good slow burn horror. People like to give bad reviews because it makes them feel emboldened. Pretty childish. Very good story that unfolds properly w a solid script. If you're into folklore coupled w horror then you're in good hands.

1) Hazel Doupe and Carolyn Bracken are excellent. Even if the movie was bad, still it would be worth watching this, just for these two actors.

Other actors are good too.

2) This is a psychological drama/horror movie. It's not a typical horror movie and this is a good thing, however, it should have been at least 10 minutes shorter. There are some boring moments. I get it, it's a slow-burn and there is nothing wrong with that, but the pacing could have been better.

3) It is not scary but there are some scenes that froze my blood.

4) You can say that this is a horror movie "for adults". If you are looking for mindless fun and gore, watch something else.

In conclusion, it's not great, but it's good. Better than the average horror movies.

This is slow burning type of horror. No jump scare. The storyline and acting just good. Not so spooky. Not a good ending but ok! However still watchable for horror fans.

The Supernatural and the Rougher Side of Dublin
Blue-Grotto30 September 2021
Char's mother Angela is acting strange. Angela rarely emerges from the bedroom, has trouble completing routine tasks like getting groceries and driving Char to school, and she is getting worse. The thing is Char really needs her mom right now. She is being bullied at school and needs someone to turn to for support and advice. This is when Angela unexpectedly disappears and then reappears in a hostile mood.

You Are Not My Mother is an intriguing, quirky, and female driven dive into Irish folklore, the supernatural, mental illness, and the rougher side of Dublin. Because of a low film budget there is not a lot of depth to the dialogue or acting, but there are bright spots too like the female focused story and the acting of Hazel Doupe (Char).

World premiere seen at the Toronto international film festival.

Folklore horror done well.
jmbovan-47-1601739 August 2022
This film doesn't break major new ground, but it does inflect well what is often handled poorly in other types of films. First, it treats the confusion of human behaviors well, leaving the open sections with plenty of doubt. Second, it doesn't explode elements with a heavy hammer to reinforce the scares. Third, the human element isn't forgotten in this story. I appreciated the subtlety of the main actor in her portrayal of this misunderstood adolescent as well as the supporting antagonist actor who displayed realistic development. Quiet but with some punches, I look forward to a repeat viewing to gain more into this world and characters.

Meh. Overrated.
darkmomo-8183112 September 2022
So I was really expecting to like this movie, but it was just...boring. I LOVE a good slow burn, but this was just annoying. Annoying teenagers, hardly anything happening, just super SLOW. There was a different aspect to it that I liked. I haven't seen very many horror movies with that kinda supernatural in it. I wish it would have been explored more and the creepiness dialed up. Instead, what we got was a very slow moving story with some good elements, but all in all failed execution. The friendship that develops between the girls? I loved it. Creepy atmosphere? Meh. Sometimes yes very much so. Other times it was just teen drama and it wasn't that interesting. I really wish more had been done with this. But hey, I watched the whole way through so it gets at least a 5/10 for being what it was. Something to fill up empty space and time with. Give it a watch if slow is your thing.

Same but different
kosmasp12 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Just like languages have similarities, relatives can be same but also different (to us). That sounds quite ominous to be honest. But I hope you get the jist and what I mean with it.

The horror comes from something that is familiar to us - no pun intended. There are other things that get touched upon (like bullying) and so many other important topics mostly in the family. And what it means to grow up ... while trying to figure out who we are or who those around us are. Nicely done and a decent entry into the horror genre.

Don't listen to reviews that tell you not to listen to the reviews
Fortressofdoors3 August 2022
There is nothing quite as annoying as a review that tells you "don't listen to the good/bad reviews", which actually means they think their opinion means more that anyone elses. Egocentric at it's best.

Watch the trailer, read the reviews and decide for yourself. As for me, I did not like this as much as I thought I would going in, because I like these dreary foreboding foreign films that unfurl as you watch, but I felt this was muddled and very slow. I don't mean slow burn either as this term is used so much now it has lost it's meaning. A slow burn keeps your interest peaked and has a payoff at the end. This does not. I found myself shifting in my seat a lot and checking the rest of the run time. I had more unanswered questions by the end than anything. Not something I would watch again, but that just me.

Actually not bad at all; good entertaining small movie
danthepoetman5 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It presents itself in a few layers, like some other horror flicks, more or less recently, you can read this one as a metaphor of a real, difficult situation some people go through ("The Babadook" comes to mind, or "The Nighthouse", for instance). It was made with a small budget, obviously, but it is well shot, a good tension throughout, the actors are good and your 90 minutes of watching are gone before you know it. A nice, well made little horror flick. Has my seal of approval.

Boring
gab-6759925 March 2022
About 35 minutes into this movie I was tempted to turn it off until I saw I was half way through. Against my better judgment I stuck it out until the very end. This was a horribly boring movie where very little happened. To me it was not even half way good but be your own judge. I personally will not recommend this to anyone I know though.

Solid Family Drama Mixed with Horror
Reviews_of_the_Dead12 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is a movie that I heard about by going to the Gateway Film Center. I saw part of the trailer and knew it was one that I was going to see. Jaime was intrigued by this one as well. She didn't get the chance to come with me due scheduling issues. I made sure to see this one during opening weekend of it playing there. This is one that I knew Duncan from the Podcast Under the Stairs liked. I also believe the guys from Scott and Liam vs. Evil also enjoyed.

Synopsis: in a North Dublin housing estate, Char's (Hazel Doupe) mother goes missing. When she returns, Char is determined to uncover the truth of her disappearance and unearth the dark secrets of her family.

We start with seeing a baby in a stroller. A woman takes her into the woods, places the baby in a circle and then starts a fire around it. The movie then shifts into the present day. We are following Char. She overslept and partially blames this on her grandmother, Rita (Ingrid Craigie). She asks for a ride to school as she is going to be late due to missing her bus. Her grandmother cannot do it. She is told to see if her mother can take her. When she goes into her mother's room, she looks rough. Her mother is Angela (Carolyn Bracken).

This drive to school is an odd one. Char asks her mother about how she is doing and if she can go by the store for food. Angela says she is tired. This upsets her daughter. We see an interesting flip here with the younger woman being more grown up due to how her mother is acting. This will be a theme for sure.

Char is bullied in school. We see it first with Suzanne (Jordanne Jones). She is a bigger girl. What I find interesting here is the more we learn about this character. The two of them have similar stories. The worst bully turns out to be Suzanne's friend of Kelly (Katie White). She seems in part doing this to show off and takes things too far.

Things get worse for Char when she is walking home from school. She sees her mother's car, but she is nowhere around. She comes home to inform her grandmother. Rita brings her son, Aaron (Paul Reid), in to help. They call the police, but there isn't much they can do. How the car was left makes them question though. Later that night, Angela returns. She isn't acting how she normally does though. There are times she seems normal and Char is happy. It takes a dark turn though. Char learns secrets that explain a scar on her face and the truth of this woman that looks like her mother but could be something else. Something that is scarier than she can imagine.

That is where I'm going to leave fleshing out the synopsis and introducing our characters. Where I want to start then with breaking things down is that we are getting a character study of Char. She lives in a lower income area from what I'm gathering. Her family has a nice enough house, but I'm taking it is middle to lower class. Part of this is due to her mother, Angela. She is struggling. This will shift into my first social commentary aspect. For the longest time with this movie, I was questioning if there was going to be a creature or if this was a commentary on mental illness. It feels like it is showing us that Angela is bipolar. We are seeing her in depressed states where she can barely get out of bed. We then see her manic. During the latter, she is fun to be around. It is when she crashes that it becomes scary. We are seeing this from Char's eyes which would be tough way to grow up.

Something else that this gives us is a commentary on bullying. Char is a good student. The movie subtly shows that in school with Ms. Devlin (Jade Jordan). This teacher is worried about her. I'm guessing most of these students have similar backgrounds. She sees that Char has potential as she moved ahead a grade. Suzanne, Kelly and that group don't like her. Her family has a reputation, which is part of it. The movie is interesting though when Suzanne learns of what happened to Char's mother and they build a kinship. Suzanne has a dark past of her own. I found this to be an interesting story to develop. It is effective as Char is dealing with a lot at home. Giving her a friend like this is good as it would be a bit too depressing in my opinion.

Now where I want to go next would be the horror elements. For the longest time, I was wondering if this was going to be a family drama. I won't reveal what the creature in this movie is or if there really is one or not, but I guessed it. There were subtle hints dropped early, which I enjoyed. It feels like a reward for those who know the lore. For a good part, there is a logical explanation. This could be mental illness as I've said. We have Angela showing signs of being bipolar. We also have Rita following lore, which could also be a sign of mental illness. Char seeing the things that she does might not be real or even at the climax, Angela could have a mental break like the bullies say. I personally think there's a monster here with how things play out. I do like this allowing you wonder and make up your mind.

That should be enough for the story so I'll move to the acting. I thought that Doupe was good as our lead. She is someone that is showing her homelife wearing on her. She doesn't have all the opportunities but making the best of what she can. Her mother is struggling and her grandmother can only do so much. She is also a victim of bullying. I think that she wears her emotions which was good. There is strength that she develops as well. Bracken was good as her mother as well. I love that she is happy and fun, but then can show us a dark side as well. It worked for what was needed there. I liked Reid, White, Craigie, Jones and the rest of the cast as well. They push our two leads to where they need to end up in the end.

The last things to go into would be with filmmaking. I'll start with the effects which were good. I'll also pull in the cinematography here as this movie is shot beautifully. We get some great things with mirrors. I like when we see a character, but their reflection is showing something else. That is creepy. There did seem to be a combination of practical effects and CGI. I thought they worked well. I didn't have any issues. As for the soundtrack, it didn't necessarily stand out to me. They did do some creepy things with hearing bumping above someone or scary sounds from a different room. That was effective. The musical choices did help build the atmosphere so I give credit there.

In conclusion here, I thought this was a solid movie. We get an interesting character study of Char where homelife and how she is treated is difficult. It is also incorporating potentially a creature as well. It is one that I've seen more of in recent years, which I don't mind when handled correctly. They do well with allowing us as a viewer to determine what we are seeing. The acting was good. The effects were solid. I thought this was shot well as that helps to hide things. There is beautiful framing as well. The soundtrack and design did help to build the atmosphere. I thought this was above average with my first viewing. I've come up with this second viewing and now think this is good. It is also a contender for my year end top ten.

My Rating: 8 out of 10.

Very well acted
AndSoForth15 April 2022
While it's not exactly new, this movie offers an interesting portrayal of teenagers dealing with their parents mental illness and doesn't use the typical demon mythology which for a horror flick feels refreshing.

Overall the movie is rooted in realism and the acting is spot on. The way some scenes quickly shift from uneasy to eerie actions is quite clever and reflects the mother's behavior gradually becoming more irrational. I found the daughter's reaction to these scenes to be very realistic, combining disgust, anger, helplessness but empathy.

Nor are you an entertaining movie.
Otkon25 March 2022
This is so drawn-out that you will wind up refurbishing an antique end table, two chairs and a credenza while waiting for something to happen.

Then things happen in the end. With actual music and tension.

I am not a fan of movies that think agonizingly slow, pretentiously quiet and overly mysterious equals engaging.

What was the deal with Grandma's foot? Maybe that story was the true horror here.

Very solid horror
rhiscose9 June 2022
I like horror movies. This was a solid horror movie that kind of surprised me.

The acting was very good, production good. Horror elements excellent and tastefully done. No LOUD NOISES for jump scares, it had some well done creepy moments. Use of effects really well done too.

Decent bit of lore, though i'd have liked a little more. But that's just me.

The story telling and pacing was excellent, I did not feel it went too slow nor felt rushed.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this movie if you're into horrors. Also i'd agree with another review that there is a drama element, which I normally avoid; however I felt the story flowed so nicely it was very good!

Away with the fairies.
radhrh25 March 2022
In Britain, and I count Ireland as being part of the British Isles, if someone is a bit ga-ga we'll say "They are away with the fairies". That most certainly applies to the Mother in this drama. Note this movie is a domestic drama involving mental illness and abuse, which although horrific is not horror.

I'm not sure what year this is set in. Certainly not the current year, the kids don't have mobile phones and the family have a CRT TV. Maybe late 1980s or early 90's? You may question the relevance of this but it is only very recently that Halloween has gained any traction in Britain but it is Halloween that plays a significant part in this movie. Fireworks and Bonfires are reserved for Bonfire night, November 5th, not Halloween. Sure enough, Bonfire night has roots in pagan tradition as does Halloween but to feature the later I suspect is pandering to an American audience. I never saw a pumpkin in a British store until well in the 2000s.

As said earlier, this is not a horror movie. The supernatural elements seem added in order to gain an audience for a domestic drama. I wish they'd have left the fairy dust out as it's a bit discordant, as a drama about mental illness it's fine as it stands but as a horror movie it's a bit pants.
