Ups and downs... very unfortunately, too many downs
guisreis29 April 2022
I had great expectation. Since I heard about the production of this movie for the first time I had been waiting for it, and I was certain that it would be a remarkable one. Very unfortunately, as I wanted a lot it to be as good as it was important to be, I was wrong.

The general idea is brilliant, and the beginning seemed promising, as art direction is also great, one of the very best qualities of the film. As I love dystopias it made my expectation be high: in a dystopic Brazil in near future, the government enacts increasingly harsher racist laws and decrees against black people, wanting them to "go back" to Africa. A great story could have been shown with that interesting and ironical background.

The problem is that the film has ups and downs, including too many downs, and script is the worst of them. Characters are undeveloped, with no arc or with changes which are sudden and unconvincing. Acting is mostly good, as there are many great actors and actresses, but bad dialogues and a clumsy direction led to some very bad scenes too. Probably due the different ordering in which the scenes have been shot and inserted in the edition, there are some absurd inconsistencies in characters' mood, what is a Z-film problem.

Dialogues are mostly poor, with many cliché lines. Indeed, it seems that there was the intention to include in the script everything filmmaker considered important, and it was made without the care of having a coherent and fluid outcome. Additionally, too many side stories, some of them seeming promising, were abandoned, and the one centered in Antônio and André's resistance was not well built.

The parallel of two dramatic situations, one by the action of the state and the other by rebels, is absurd and even dangerous, reminding (certainly unintended, as this is not Lázaro Ramos's view) the speech of the cowards who supported military dictatorship in Brazil and state that "both sided exaggerated".

I may also add that, although police action in the film is brutal, it is still less violent and disrespectful for human rights than what is usual in Brazilian peripheries with majority black population. That is bizarre, as in a dystopia the problem should have been increased and not softened. Indeed, real-life poor black people would never behave among many armed cops without the fear of being murdered or tortured.

To resume, this was a missed opportunity, as Lázaro Ramos, one of the best Brazilian actors, had much more media and financing than usual in his debut as director.

I hope in a near future we may have a remake of this film, keeping the great central idea but being developed with a mature script and direction.

Executive order
lso-soares22 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Directed by Lázaro Ramos, with the cast Alfred Enoch (Antônio), Seu Jorge (André), Taís Araújo (Capitu), Aldri Anunciação (Ivan), Adriana Esteves (Isabel), Mariana Xavier (Sarah), Renata Sorrah (Dona Izildinha) , Emicida (Berto), among others.

The screenplay is based on a play by Aldri Anunciação that played in 2011.

The story takes place in an uncertain future in Brazil, when blacks are called accentuated melanins. An authoritarian government issues an executive order, number 1888 (a reference to the year in which the Golden Law was signed in the country), which requires all citizens of African origin to move to Africa. The government guarantees the one-way ticket. Isabel is the head of the department that registers and sends such citizens out of the country. André, a photojournalist who maintains a blog, is one of those who question the government's orders. Capitu, a doctor married to Antônio, realizing that the police would forcibly remove her from attending to a man injured in the leg to be sent to Africa, manages to escape, saving a black mother with an albino daughter from the police, is rescued by Ivan and sheltered in a kind of quilombo, called an afrobunker by its members. Antônio and André are isolated inside their apartment, with the neighbor Dona Izildinha, a racist one, as Isabel's helper to make the two leave the apartment. Antônio doesn't know where Capitu is, but he doesn't leave his apartment. After much confusion and persecution, Capitu and Antônio meet again, being arrested by Isabel. But what seemed like a tragic ending... The premise is great, the mostly black cast is a rarity in Brazilian cinema, the discussion of structural racism is current, but the whole thing didn't work as it should. Still, I liked the movie. Deserved tributes to Marielle Franco, Ruth de Souza, Zezé Motta, Mestre Moa, among others, who appear in photographs, objects and graffiti in the film.

The photography in yellow tones and blurred images in the background were interesting artifices to represent a future era without the need for special effects or the use of futuristic objects.

As a highlight, I mention the great performances of Seu Jorge, Adriana Esteves, Taís Araújo and Renata Sorrah. I still don't like actor Alfred Enoch. The chemistry between him and Taís Araújo didn't work, the two didn't convince me as a couple in love. I found the performance of this English actor, son of a Brazilian, very forced, not because of the Portuguese, which sounds almost without an accent, but because of the performance itself. He didn't convince me at any point in the projection, unlike Seu Jorge, who plays cousin André, debauched, good-natured, who easily panics in difficult situations.

Lázaro Ramos' directing work is good and could improve a lot. The final scene, in which he appears, exudes a lot of emotion.

Powerful plot, poor achievement
li090442627 May 2023
The movie "Executive Order" brings the strength of racial prejudice against black people during a visibly ultra-right-wing government in Brazil. The plot deals with a very important and current theme of racial segregation and the danger of a false political ideology about immigration. The major issues with the movie start with a naive and weak script, then go through the amateurish direction and culminate with the poor editing, which has cuts similar to those ones in Latin soap operas. It is sad to realize that the strength of the plot gets lost when mixed with comic scenes and childish dialogues.

Awesome script, great story, but average acting.
arthurhsassis24 April 2022
Can we drop the whole "wokeness" accusations for a bit and really watch and pay attention about what the movie is really about?

That's not a premonition movie where the situation's bound to happen somewhere in the next years.

I feel like the film uses a way of showing the audience what it's like to be a minority living in a predominantly white country, but exaggerating the narrative so that everyone can understand.

The point is, we're all scared this situation is possible to happen at any time, depending on our government and population.

The only thing that made me sad was seeing the underacting of the actors, which were following the famous Theatre/strict to the script acting.

Alfred Enoch is such a good actor, and the only time we see him shine was at the end of the movie where he shows true emotions.

Besides the novel acting, I loved everything about the movie.

Cinematography, Script, Storytelling, Seu Jorge's performance were awesome.

Highly recommended
mounsieurlapao22 April 2022
This movie is highly recommended. Despite the broad issues such as "what happened in Bahia and other states" and the action of the United Nations, the movie focuses on a more restricted universe such as a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, but this does not disqualify the work. The film is about the occupation of places by those who are denied a place. Highly recommended, don't waste time and watch it! Seu Jorge is magnificent and very funny. Note 9/10.

Horrible screenplay
rogeriobarao18 June 2022
The idea is original but was very badly executed. Starting with a lousy screenplay - full of clichés and unnecessary lines - and a dreadful direction. What a waste!

Very good.

Good...very ver good.

Sensitively and profoundly addresses the legal issues surrounding an intense racial drama. With a captivating screenplay and powerful performances, the movie prompts us to reflect on deep-rooted prejudices in society and the impact of the judicial system on the lives of marginalized individuals. With a courageous and realistic approach, 'Injust Justice' provokes a critical analysis of racial inequalities and the quest for a fairer and more egalitarian system. This relevant and impactful cinematic work invites us to reconsider social structures and the role of everyone in building a more inclusive world.

Poor direction and realization for a good argument.
fabbio78619 June 2022
The bad grade is for the accomplishment. Direction, editing, art, stage direction and audio do not follow the argument that well done would deliver an excellent film. YOUR GEORGE delivers his worst work with a childish character, visibly carelessly directed. The resistance environments have the freshness of samba schools at Carnival time and are not tense at any time.

Poorly executed
diogocomex25 September 2022
I am a big fan of Lazaro Ramos, the actor. But Lazaro Ramos, the director just let me down. Poor argumentation, bad acting, disposable dialogues and scenes (like the sensual samba dancing while talking about a favorite song to be chosen), annoying characters (come on seu Jorge, have you seen this film before releasing it?). I just can't believe seu Jorge accepted a role like that, he is so badass. Some of the best names of Brazil cinema caught on a trap. Sad to see and give this kind of review because I love these people, storyline was really promising and some absurd situations really happens in Brazil.

Just a terrible experience. Waste of time.

"I know what you're thinking ... 'this guy probably hated this film because of his political views". Well Consider this, what I would say in terms of this movie, if you were on a plane, and you had only this film available to watch, you might just enjoy spend your time looking at a empty air sickness bag, than spend one hour and a half watching this piece of ragged thriller.

GREAT IDEA, COMPLICATED EXECUTION.
sarahborgesouza30 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I am sad to write this. Because as a Brazilian I love the diversity that Brazil is risking. We don't have a lot of sci-fi movies implementing futurism. So my expectation with the mixture of social debate and futurism was high, I was excited and very excited. However, I took a blow to the stomach with the grueling execution of this film. A very poor construction, plot holes that are fixed with coincidences and details that are left out. The narrative starts to go too fast after a few acts and there is no time for any connection between us viewers and the characters on screen. A very large vacuum of space in the narrative Who prefers to speed up to meet the time prescribed in the script. I am extremely upset with what they did to the resistance, a group of lost people who in the end serve no one Purpose or strength, they just want to hide. LázaroRamos I love you very much, you are a very talented filmmaker and actor, but a bad choice of approach.
