Exclusive: Roku has quickly found its new scripted boss.
The free-ad supported streaming service has promoted Brian Tannenbaum to oversee scripted content following news of Colin Davis’ departure to Sony Pictures Television. Deadline understands that he will initially take on the role on an interim basis, but sources suggest that he will likely get the job on a permanent basis.
Deadline revealed earlier this afternoon that Davis, who was Head of Scripted Originals, is joining the studio as EVP, Comedy Development.
Lydia Antonini remains Head of Creative Affairs and Morgan Pichinson remains Head of Comedy.
Tannenbaum has spent the last couple of years as Head of Alternative Originals and will now oversee all original programming for the service. It’s believed that he will become Head of Originals, after David Eilenberg was upped to Head of Content at Roku Media, following the departure of Rob Holmes earlier this year.

The embattled American adaptation of the classic Great British Baking Show (Or Bake-Off to the U.K. purists) was bought from ABC by the Roku Channel as part of a huge swathe of scripted and unscripted projects set to premiere on the up-and-coming streamer.
While it is going to be judged by the same judges who work on the British show, Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, the new American hosts have since announced to keep building up the hype. Now, the first promo images of Ellie Kemper and Zach Cherry in the show’s iconic tent standing behind Hollywood and Leith have been released.
Kemper is best known for her acclaimed performance in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt as well as a long-running supporting role in The Office. Cherry is an actor and well-known improviser who has had bit roles in a wealth of sitcoms and other films and just had a break-out lead performance in Severance.

Chrissy Teigen will be donning her judge’s robes once again for Season 3 of “Chrissy’s Court,” returning exclusively to the Roku Channel this fall.
Roku’s greenlight for a third run of the courtroom series, patterned after daytime TV fare like “Judge Judy” and “The People’s Court,” comes after Season 2 scored as the most-watched unscripted Roku original premiere to date. In each episode, Judge Chrissy adjudicates one small-claims case. The plaintiffs, defendants, and disputes are real, and Teigen’s decisions are final and binding. The show features Teigen’s mom, Pepper Thai, as the “bailiff” who maintains order in the court.
The second season of “Chrissy’s Court” drew more unique views than any prior unscripted Roku original launch during its opening weekend on the Roku Channel in the U.S., from June 17-19, 2022. The series also was the Roku Channel’s No. 1 VOD program in the U.

Roku says its pickup of the 75-plus shows from Quibi, the short-lived premium mobile entertainment startup that went belly-up last year, has paid off beyond its expectations. But as with other streaming companies, Roku isn’t divulging specific metrics for the Quibi programming, which it rebranded as Roku Originals.
According to Roku, more active accounts streamed a Roku Original in the first two weeks on the Roku Channel than the number of Quibi accounts did on Quibi over the brief nine months of the app’s lifetime.
Roku’s claim that more people have already watched Quibi shows on its platform than on Quibi’s now-defunct app seems credible — but it’s not a particularly high bar.
Jeffrey Katzenberg-founded Quibi launched in April 2020, at the front end of the Covid pandemic. In October, the richly funded company — which had banked nearly $1.8 billion from major studios and other investors — said...

Exclusive: The Roku Channel has a job on its hands to manage its recently acquired library of Quibi shows and has hired the shortform service’s former exec Brian Tannenbaum to help on the non-scripted side.
Deadline understands that Tannenbaum, who was a senior content executive and programming lead in the shortform streaming service’s alternative and unscripted team, has joined the technology company to head up alternative content for The Roku Channel.
Sources have told Deadline that Tannenbaum’s priority is to handle the non-scripted portion of the Quibi content, dealing with producers and talent as it plans to roll out these shows on The Roku Channel later this year.

Chrissy Teigen remains in the hospital after receiving two blood transfusions. As the Chrissy's Court star previously shared, she's receiving medical care due to excessive bleeding during her third pregnancy. "It's so weird because I feel really good," the Cravings author, who is expecting a baby boy with husband John Legend, told her social media followers on Sunday, Sept. 27. "I'm usually at my happiest pregnant, mood-wise. I feel happier than I do not pregnant. That's why it's so hard for me to come to terms with. It was at the point today where it was never stopping bleeding." On Monday, Sept. 28, Chrissy returned to social media to give her followers an update....

Chrissy Teigen has shared a concerning update amid her high-risk pregnancy.
The cookbook author recently revealed she had another episode of health scare.
Teigen, 34, who shares two children, a daughter, Luna Simone, 4, and son Miles Theodore, 2, with husband John Legend was reportedly admitted to Cedars Sinai
Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, on September 27 after suffering complications during her pregnancy.
“I was always, always bleeding. The blood has been going on for a little less than a month. More than a period, definitely not spotting,” Teigen updated her fans via Instagram live from her hospital bed.
“Every time I’d go to the bathroom, it would be blood. Even just laying there, it would be blood. Today the big difference was it was like if you’d turn a faucet on to low and leave it,” she said.

Chrissy Teigen is helping teachers get ready for the new school year. The 34-year-old cookbook author took to Twitter on Sunday, Aug. 23 and offered to purchase items for their classrooms. "If you are a teacher in need of supplies for the upcoming school year, please drop your Amazon Wishlist here," she wrote. "I will do as many as I can!" The Chrissy's Court star joked she wished there "was a button to add everything at once" to her shopping cart. "It's gonna take me a long while so bear with me!" she added. But by Monday morning, Teigen tweeted she had "cleared 50 entire lists" and that "countless extra items...

Eye Candy is based on a Japanese game show called Sokkuri Sweets, which was created by Nippon TV in Japan but will be produced by Main Event Media stateside, according to Deadline, in partnership with Teigen’s own Suit & Thai Productions. Chrissy Teigen is going from the courtroom in Chrissy’s Court to sweet confections. Quibi has set a new series titled Eye Candy based on the hit Japanese game show Sokkuri Sweets produced by Nippon TV. Eye Candy will be produced by Main Event Media, an All3Media America company, and executive produced by Teigen via her Suit & Thai Productions.
The series is centered around teams of celebrities and civilians who will attempt to identify outrageous edible creations designed to look like everyday ordinary objects. The timing of the new series couldn’t be any better as viral videos of cakes disguised everyday items have been circulating around the internet as of late.
“I’ve been fascinated by all the mind-blowing cake videos seen around the world and I’m thrilled to be a part of introducing Eye Candy to many others,” said Teigen. “Disclaimer: We are not responsible for any feelings of confusion,...

Chrissy Teigen is trying to answer the age-old question is it real, or is it cake?
Quibi has ordered another series from Teigen, who already has a second season of “Chrissy’s Court” in the works at the platform, called “Eye Candy.”
Based on the popular Japanese game show format “Sokkuri Sweets,” the series features teams of celebrities and civilians attempting to identify edible creations designed to look like everyday, ordinary objects. The objective is to distinguish the edible creations from the not-so-edible objects; the real from the cake. Once the contestants make their choice, they must take take a bite so see if they’re right.

Quibi is an odd streaming service, to say the least. Sure, the whole format is strange with “quick bite” content of roughly 10-minute episodes of series. But also, the sheer number of celebrities with odd ideas for shows just adds to the confusion. Did you ever wonder what would happen if Chrissy Teigen was a real judge? Quibi has your answer in “Chrissy’s Court,” for example.

Jeffrey Katzenberg’s Quibi hasn’t had a lot of good news since its April 6, but today the courts gave the A-lister rich mobile streamer a boost.
“The Motion fails to make a sufficient showing of irreparable harm to Eko’s reputation and goodwill because of the technical implementation of Turnstyle that allegedly resulted from misappropriation of Eko’s claimed trade secret Mobile Device Optimized Rts,” ruled a federal judge today in the Meg Whitman-run Quibi’s bare knuckles legal slap down with the Elliott Management-backed interactive-video company Eko (Read It Here).
With conflicting complaints fired off from both parties since late March, the Jbf Interlude 2009 Ltd controlled company sought a motion for a preliminary injunction against Quibi and its much hyped Turnstyle function – which would have really cramped the struggling app’s style.

Nicole Richie is bringing more “Nikki Fre$h” to Quibi.
The platform has renewed her comedy show for a second season, Variety has learned exclusively, adding to an expanding number of Quibi shows coming back for a second outing.
The series sees Richie in character as her trap alter-ego Nikki Fre$h, interacting with real life experts from the ever-expanding wellness world to learn ways to better serve our bodies and our planet. All the while, she comedically exaggerates those solutions to the edge of sanity.
“The world wants more of my voice, my garden, and my body. And I’m gonna give it to them,” said Richie of the renewal.
During a conversation with Variety to discuss the show, Richie explained that the name Nikki Fre$h is rooted in a hashtag she started using to accompany posts about her edible garden.

Exclusive, Updated, 11:15 Am: Jeffrey Katzenberg has always loved a good scrap, and the Quibi kingpin came out swinging Tuesday after being officially named a defendant in the ongoing and competing lawsuits over the mobile platform’s Turnstyle technology.
“With its amended complaint, Eko’s desperation and the weakness of their case are more transparent than ever,” said a spokesperson for the Meg Whitman-run Quibi to Deadline this morning, after we broke that Katzenberg and several Quibi staffers had been added to the Eko’s suit alleging patent infringement and now breach of contract.
“No new facts are alleged and it seems designed only to try to score more publicity,” Quibi went on to say, with an always present eye to media perspectives and coverage.
“Eko can revise, recut and redo their tortured arguments all they want, but the shakedown won’t work,” the statement punches. “Our patented Turnstyle feature,...

Jeffrey Katzenberg’s Quibi went very close to the mattresses today in federal court in its ongoing rumpus with the now Elliott Management-backed interactive-video company over motion flipping technology.
“This is a case built on circumstantial evidence,” Quibi’s top outside counsel Michael Jacob proclaimed in a telephone hearing Thursday addressing the Jbf Interlude 2009 Ltd controlled company’s motion for a preliminary injunction against the April 6-launched A-lister packed mobile streamer.
“It’s just statements that he might have, could have,” the Morrison and Foerster Llp lawyer asserted of the role of one-time Snap (Aka Snapchat) employee Clifton Smith, who subsequently moved over to the Meg Whitman-run outlet.
Kicked off with a preemptive March 9 complaint for declaratory judgment by Quibi itself, Eko’s subsequent swirl of alleged tech sticky fingers and the suppose “irreparable harm” that Smith and fellow ex-Snapper Joseph Burfitt, brought to the matter, as...

Just weeks after Quibi‘s $1.8 billion with a “b” launch, CEO Jefferey Katzenberg admits “100% regret” about his phone-only platform. Timing was everything. Now he says Quibi will offer a TV option. It also might be up for traditional awards like Emmys and Critics’ Choice in certain categories. Movies and Oscars, not so much. And don’t ask him to produce next year’s show. In a candid phone call, the former DreamWorks co-founder talks hiccups and successes in his new venture.

Quibi has been downloaded more than 2.7 million times since its April 6, the mobile streaming service revealed on Wednesday. The streaming service, which launched on April 6, pulled in 1.7 million in its first week. It added an additional 1 million in its second. Quibi founders Meg Whitman and Jeffrey Katzenberg had previously said they would shy away from releasing any kind of subscriber information. The new service is offering a free 90-day trial for people who sign up this month. Afterward, it will cost $4.99 per month for ad-supported streaming and $7.99 per month for ad-free streaming. Quibi also revealed that it’s five most-watched shows are “Most Dangerous Game,” “Chrissy’s Court,” “Flipped,” “Punk’d” and “Survive.” Katzenberg added in an interview with Reuters that some users would have the ability to cast the mobile content onto their connected TV sets as early as next month. Some users had complained that they could only watch the content on their phones.

Quibi, which launched two weeks ago as a mobile-only video streaming app for on-the-go viewing, said it plans to add the ability to “cast” content to compatible TVs next month.
The company, led by founder Jeffrey Katzenberg and CEO Meg Whitman, also announced that its app has been downloaded more than 2.7 million times in the first two weeks. In the first week, according to the company, it hit 1.7 million downloads.
According to analytics company Sensor Tower, Quibi has around 2.3 million downloads to date. The Quibi figure “seems reasonable assuming they are counting all possible installs,” said Sensor Tower head of mobile insights Randy Nelson, which may include re-downloads; installs on multiple devices per Apple or Google account; or iPad downloads of the iPhone-only app.
Meanwhile, it’s worth noting that downloads do not equate to active users, as some of those who downloaded the Quibi app have likely watched very little of the quick-bite content.

Quibi is not moving ahead with a planned series dramatizing the rise of Snapchat and its founder, Evan Spiegel, Variety has learned exclusively.
The project was announced at the SXSW film festival last year by Quibi founder and board chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg. It was to be based on the feature script “Frat Boy Genius” by Elissa Karasik, which was featured on the 2018 Black List.
“We want to tell a story that’s as compelling and interesting about Snapchat and Evan as ‘The Social Network’ was for Facebook,” Katzenberg said at the time.
The news comes just one week after the launch of the mobile-only streaming app, which aims to premium short form content to subscribers in brief chapters, or “quick bites.” Quibi CEO Meg Whitman said earlier on Monday that the app had been downloaded 1.7 million times since launch. The service launched with a 90-day free trial.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the creative mind behind Warner Bros. Television’s multiple Archie comics-based series, is returning to his roots for his next project.
The “Riverdale” showrunner is developing a drama based on his 2008 play “Good Boys and True” at Quibi, Variety has learned exclusively. He will co-write and executive produce the series alongside fellow “Riverdale” scribe Greg Murray.
Described as a suspenseful drama about class, sexuality and identity which explores the dark side of privilege, “Good Boys and True” follows six people drawn together by a disturbing videotape that surfaces on the campus of the elite preparatory academy St. Joe’s School for Boys in the fall of 1988.
The prospective series is being produced by Aguirre-Sacasa’s Muckle Man Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, where the producer inked a substantial, multi-year overall deal in 2019. Aguirre-Sacasa is also currently the showrunner of Netflix’s “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” the...

Updated: Quibi, the mobile-only streaming service from Jeffrey Katzenberg, said it hit 1.7 million installations within the first week of launch — higher than third-party estimates. According to analysts, the big-budget, short-form video streamer has had a relatively tepid reception in part because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Quibi said Monday that it reached 1.75 million downloads. By contrast, according to research firm Apptopia, the Quibi app had been downloaded and installed 1.15 million times as of Sunday, April 12. The service launched with a 90-day free trial.
Downloads have been fairly evenly split between iOS and Android devices, with about 87% of the installs from the U.S. and 6% from Canada, according to Apptopia data. Quibi’s app is available worldwide but the startup, led by Katzenberg and CEO Meg Whitman, is focusing its marketing and customer-acquisition efforts on North America.

The breakout star of Chrissy Teigen's new Quibi show, Chrissy's Court, isn't Chrissy (or her fabulous statement necklaces), it's her mother, Vilailuck Teigen, aka Pepper Thai! Even though she only has one line (which apparently took her 12 episodes to get right), Vilailuck made sure to play her part of the bailiff well, even riffing off her daughter. This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who's been following Chrissy for a while, though - after all, her mother does live with her and frequently appears on Chrissy's Instagram.
The pair always seem to have a good time together, including recently when Chrissy officiated a stuffed-animal wedding for her daughter, Luna. It's clear Chrissy gets a lot of her personality from her momma, and these are absolutely goals when it comes to mother-daughter relationships. Don't believe me? Look ahead to see some of their most memorable moments.

Quibi’s launch received a tepid response Monday on social media, far below the amount of attention generated by Disney Plus and Apple TV Plus on their launch days.
According to data from social media research firm ListenFirst Media, Quibi was the subject of 46,554 Twitter posts on April 6. In comparison, Apple TV Plus received 8.6 times more Tweets on Nov. 1, when it launched, while Disney Plus appeared in 23 times more Tweets when it bowed on Nov. 12.
In the month prior, between March 5 and April 5, there were 91,725 Tweets mentioning Quibi. According to the study, Quibi has a social media fan footprint of 167,000 — including a jump of 20,621 new fans on April 6. That’s a 351 percent spike from the day before, when it added 6,056 new fans.

Quibi’s first-day app downloads hit around 300,000, coming after months of steady hype surrounding Jeffrey Katzenberg’s ambitious mobile-only streaming service.
That’s according to preliminary estimates from mobile-analytics firm Sensor Tower. Currently, as of Tuesday morning, Quibi ranks as the No. 3 top free app overall on Apple’s App Store in the U.S. (following Zoom and TikTok).
Compared with the bow of Disney Plus, Quibi had a far smaller jump out of the gate: On Nov. 12, 2019, the Mouse House’s streaming app notched approximately 4 million installs in the U.S. and Canada. That puts Quibi’s Day One download total at 7.5% of Disney Plus for the same territories, per Sensor Tower.
To be sure, Disney Plus benefited from a large collection of brand-name movie and TV titles, including Star Wars, Pixar, Marvel and Disney films, as well as 30 seasons of “The Simpsons” along with originals like “The Mandalorian.

Quibi, the latest attempt to switch things up in the streaming market, is here.
The mobile-only streaming service has launched, and it promises to deliver big stories in chapters.
It's perfect for those who find it difficult to keep up with standard length TV shows.
Quibi is home to a bunch of scripted and unscripted series, and in this article, we'll focus on the scripted side of things.
All of the shows launched with three chapters today, meaning that there is just under 30 minutes of these shows available to stream.
We'll start with Survive because it has got to be one of the most anticipated new shows out there.
Survive is the story of a young woman named Jane (Sophie Turner) whose plane crashes on a remote snow-covered mountain and she, along with Paul (Corey Hawkins) must do everything in their power to stay safe.

After months of Quibi building up its roster with countless stars and absurdist premises, the streaming service of “quick bites” has finally arrived. The platform features abbreviated episodes only available on phones in order to cater to people with precious little time in between commitments — and yes, the timing of this launch during a nationwide quarantine is, to say the least, ironic. Nevertheless, Quibi is here and ready to entertain you, 6-10 minutes at a time, with a slate of strange, ambitious, and downright ridiculous shows.
Fifty shows are available to stream on the app right now, featuring game shows, comedies and dramas with talent including everyone from “Game of Thrones” star Sophie Turner, to “RuPaul’s Drag Race” winner Sasha Velour, to Chrissy Teigen and Queen Latifah. Quibi will be the next streaming service to enter the game next month, when it finally launches to the public on April 6. With 51 series, including four original scripted projects, Quibi will have one of the largest libraries of original content out of all the recent streaming services to debut in the next few months.
The company says it will premiere 175 original shows and 8,500 short-form episodes — dubbed “quick bites” — within its first year, with the content divided into three categories:
1. Movies in Chapters: Big stories told in chapters that are 7 to 10 minutes in length.
2. Unscripted and Docs: This episodic category is food, fashion, travel, animals, cars, builds, music, sports, comedy, talk, variety, documentaries and more. All with episodes in 10 minutes or less.
3. Daily Essentials: Curated daily into 5-6 minute quick bites of news, entertainment and inspiration.
