A new report suggests that Apple will move to more incentive-based payouts for streaming shows that attract bigger audiences.
There was a moment in Hollywood where big-name TV creators could essentially count on a streaming service to attempt to woo them away from broadcast or cable with an eye-popping contract. Shonda Rhimes departed ABC in 2017 after getting a deal worth at least $100 million from Netflix, and when streamers’ stock prices were on a trajectory to the moon despite balance sheets that showed they lost huge sums of money every quarter, such deals were par for the course. But in 2024, investors are no longer interested in sinking big sums into streamers that can’t show they’re also healthy, profitable businesses, and that has providers rethinking the way they offer creators content deals. A new report from The Ankler indicates that Apple TV+ is mulling changes to the way it offers...

It used to be said that every movie, no matter how badly it did at the box office or critically, went to heaven. Heaven, of course, meant physical media. First, it was VHS, then it was Laserdisc, then DVD, Blu-ray, and now 4K Blu-rays; every movie would get some kind of physical media release. After all, rentals and sales were important to a film’s profitability. In fact, some movies that tanked theatrically did so well on DVD that they became perennials, such as Donnie Darko or The Transporter, with the DVD sales of that movie directly influencing the studio to greenlight a sequel and give Jason Statham a legit career as an action star. Yet, despite physical media making a comeback, it’s worth noting that some of the most popular movies in recent memory have never gotten a physical media release. And we’re not only talking about...

New data from Ampere Analysis shows the Apple TV+ library grew by 25% between February and March thanks to the addition of licensed movies.
The strategy for Apple TV+ has always been clear, even if outside observers didn’t necessarily agree with it. The streamer would showcase only Apple originals, a testament to the high production values and A-level stars the company is able to bring to its shows thanks to revenue generated by its device retailing segment. But that all changed in early March when the streamer imported more than 50 movies created by various other Hollywood studios for a short window. New data from Ampere Analysis suggests that perhaps Apple may not want to be so hasty in letting its next batch of licensed titles go if it decides to repeat the experiment again.

Apple TV+ officially launched on November 1, 2019, the same month as Disney+ and about six months before HBO Max (now Max.)
The launch of Apple's original content efforts came when all of the major players were staking out their claims on the streaming economy following the success of Netflix.
Four and a half years into its existence, Apple has much to be proud of regarding Apple TV+
It has produced some global hits, led by Ted Lasso, and it became the first and so far only streaming service to make a movie that won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Apple TV+ likely does not draw the eyeballs that Netflix and some of its other competitors do. But in Apple's case, that doesn't quite matter.

Big changes could be coming to the Sundance Film Festival, an incubator of (mostly) American independent film for decades, and the launchpad for Oscar-winning movies like “Coda,” “Manchester By The Sea,” “Whiplash,” “Winter’s Bone,” “The Usual Suspects” and many more. (The number of movies to debut at Sundance that were Oscar-nominated in some category or another is too long to list.) Long associated with the upscale ski resort of Park City, Utah, it looks like the annual event may be thinking of moving elsewhere.
The primary reason cited is that the event is simply “too big” for the small community.
The festival has opened itself up for bidding from hosts, eyeing 2027 as a potential new start date. As per Deadline, other locations can put forth their proposals now through May 1, and a second round will continue through late June. The evaluation will be based in part on “sustainability and inclusivity.

For 40 years, the Sundance Film Festival has been the United States' preeminent market and showcase for independent film. Over this span, the festival has become famous not just for the groundbreaking movies it's premiered, but its wintry Park City, Utah setting. January is peak ski season in the once-sleepy resort town, which gives Hollywood execs, producers and artists extra incentive to skip town and squeeze in some time on the slopes while watching loads of new movies from some of the most talented and excitingly unconventional filmmakers on the planet.
This annual tradition could be coming to an end.
Today, the Sundance Institute announced that it is soliciting bids to relocate the 10-day festival. According to festival director Eugene Hernandez:
"We are in a unique moment for our festival and our global film community, and with the contract up for renewal, this exploration allows us to responsibly consider how...

A new report from Bloomberg indicates the Apple TV’s FaceTime functionality could be set to expand in a big way.
It hasn’t been that long since Apple released a new model of its Apple TV streaming box. The third generation of Apple TV players rolled out to customers in October 2022, but a new report from Bloomberg indicates the company’s engineers could be hard at work on a new model of the player with an important new feature: a built-in camera to make FaceTime calls on Apple TV devices a cinch.
Now that Apple’s Vision Pro has launched, the company has time to turn its thoughts to whole-home technology. Gesture-based controls could help users swap video calls between screens and more without having to press buttons. The technology is meant to work in concert with iPhones and Vision Pro headsets as well. 7-Day Free Trial $9.99+ / month apple.

Streaming platforms are finding American streaming audiences increasingly taped out, and are looking for new markets to try and grow their customer bases.
Apple has its traveling cap on! A new report from The Information says that Apple is considering launching many of its subscription services, including its streamer Apple TV+ in China. The report suggests that Apple is boosting the number of team members responsible for other subscriptions like Apple Music in recent years, and is actively recruiting Chinese executives who are familiar with the tight restrictions the government places on media content in the country. An expansion to China by Apple TV+ would follow a pattern of recent international rollouts by other streaming services, as providers seek alternatives to an American customer base that appears to provide limited opportunities for subscriber growth.
China’s population of more than 1.4 billion people provides a tantalizing marketplace for streamers, regardless of government regulation.

• Oppenheimer is the third consecutive movie to be released before fall film festival season to win the Best Picture Oscar (after Coda and Everything Everywhere All At Once)... so perhaps distributors can learn to start trusting that movies can be released at any time and still factor into awards season? A whopping 26 (or 70.3%) of the last decade’s worth of acting Oscar recipients – including 2024’s Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) – were born in the United States. Also counted here is Joaquin Phoenix, who originates from the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico. Compared to the group of performers who prevailed between 2005 and 2014, the 2015-2024 set includes six more Americans, constituting a 16% larger majority. Considering all 96 years of Academy Awards history, the rate of unique American acting victors stands at 68.1%.

The Greek provocateur seemed to be smiling throughout Oscar night. In the past he’d delivered films with titles like Dogtooth and The Lobster, and his newest, Poor Things, was now stockpiling the statuary even as Hollywood’s filmmaking elite looked on, perplexed.
Yorgos Lanthimos’ code-busting Poor Things was winning not only successive awards (four in all) Sunday but also the exuberant applause from an audience that seemed to welcome change. Even chaotic change.
Oppenheimer won the big prize on Oscar night, of course, but Oscar voters once again demonstrated their support for the product of the filmmaking underclass. The Scorsese-Spielberg-Ridley Scott fraternity looked on while dark horses like Lanthimos, or, a year earlier, the Daniels (Kwan and Scheinert) from Everything Everywhere All at Once, stole the action.
Coda from Sian Heder was the surprise of 2022.

Apple TV+ unveiled the trailer for “Franklin,” the upcoming, eight-part limited series starring and executive produced by Academy, Emmy and AFI Lifetime Achievement Award winner Michael Douglas. Led by Douglas in the title role of ‘Benjamin Franklin,’ “Franklin” will premiere globally on Apple TV+ withthe first three episodes on Friday, April 12, followed by one new episode every Friday through May 17, 2024.
Based on Pulitzer Prize winner Stacy Schiff’s book, “A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America,” “Franklin” explores the thrilling story of the greatest gamble of Benjamin Franklin’s career. In December 1776, Franklin is world famous for his electrical experiments, but his passion and power are put to the test when – as the fate of American independence hangs in the balance – he embarks on a secret mission to France.
At age 70, without any diplomatic training, Franklin convinced an absolute monarchy to underwrite America’s experiment in democracy.

Films made by the likes of Netflix seem to have one chance to get noticed – and then they’re falling away, almost forgotten. A few thoughts.
You might just have noticed, but we’ve just had the Academy Awards come and go, with a traditional studio taking home the top prize. Snapping at their heels, streaming services spending a lot of money to promote their wares, but not winning a lot of gold.
Among this year’s streaming contenders: Maestro, Killers Of The Flower Moon, Nyad, Society Of The Snow and Rustin. Some smashing films there: my fear is, in some cases, that’s going to be pretty much the last we’ve heard of them.
The unsuccessful Oscar campaign is nothing fresh of course. In recent years though, streaming services – Netflix in particular – have allowed hard cash to flow into their attempt to earn Academy Awards. Of those streamers,...

The 21st Century is only two decades old, but its first batch of Best Picture winners already paints an extraordinary portrait of a world in flux. From historical epics to intimate digital indies, from a musical that riffs on showbiz standards to period drama that reflects on present crises, from a sparse modern western to an overstimulating multiverse martial arts story, these 24 films range from “problematic” to “perfect” and hit all points in between. More than that, they illustrate Hollywood’s evolving definition of greatness and the relationship between the film industry and the times that forge it.
Here are the 24 Best Picture winners of the 21st century, ranked from worst to best.

It was a huge night for Christopher Nolan at the Academy Awards as his breakthrough hit "Oppenheimer" swept most of the major categories. The film walked away with seven Oscars in total, including Best Picture. In doing so, it became the first out-and-out popular blockbuster to win the night's top prize in 20 years.
"Oppenheimer" made a downright shocking $960 million worldwide as part of the duel phenomenon that was Barbenheimer last year. It ended up as the third-biggest movie of 2023 at the box office overall, trailing only "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($1.3 billion) and "Barbie" ($1.44 billion worldwide). It was also by far the least likely of these three films to become such a huge hit as it is not an action-packed film, nor is it based on any treasured IP. It's merely the result of our finest living filmmakers doing his thing on a massive scale. That proved to be more than enough.
