Exclusive: Vertical Entertainment has acquired U.S. rights to the comedy Unplugging, starring Eva Longoria (Sylvie’s Love), Matt Walsh (Veep), Lea Thompson (J. Edgar), Keith David (Greenleaf) and Nicole Byer (Nailed It!), with plans to release it in theaters nationwide next spring.
In the feature directorial debut of veteran film editor Debra Neil-Fisher, husband and wife Dan (Walsh) and Jeanine (Longoria) plan a weekend getaway of “digital detox” without kids, phones, or social media. They need—or think they need—only clean fresh air and alone time together to rekindle their romance. But once they forego Gps to guide them and disconnect from the internet, can they reconnect their own internal servers to spark their marriage?
Johnny Pemberton (Superstore), Al Madrigal (Morbius), Joel Kim Booster (Sunnyside), and Nancy Friedrich (Pen15) round out the cast of the film, scripted by Walsh and Brad Morris.

"Don't worry, we'll find 'em." Vertical Ent. has released an official trailer for an Australian survival drama titled Buckley's Chance, which is opening in the US starting in August after already debuting in Australia a few months ago. The film is about a young boy who moves to Western Australian to live with his estranged grandfather. He ends up lost deep in the outback on a quest to try to get home. He comes across a wild dog, entangled in an old barbed-wire fence. When he saves the dingo from certain death, the two pals form an unexpected bond and embark on an epic journey of adventure and survival. Dogs are the best! The film stars Billy Nighy, Victoria Hill, Kelton Peel, and introducing Milan Burch as Ridley. This reminds me of many other lost-in-the-Outback films, such as Tracks, which also has a cute doggie in it and scary snakes.

Buffalo 8 has acquired worldwide rights at the just-wrapped Cannes virtual market to Givers of Death, an apocalyptic sci-fi thriller written and directed by and starring Addison Henderson. The film, which is set in a world obliterated by a deadly virus that has killed a third of the population, centers on a the quest for peace for a hitman (Henderson) in a post-apocalyptic world where those who are too afraid to end their own lives from the painful virus hire hitmen to do it for them. Jonathan Sterritt, Lou Lombardi, JJ Alfieri, Jason Delane Lee and Yvonne Huff Lee also star.
Henderson said his film “was born from my own personal tragedies and was inspired by the citizens of Otsuchi, Japan who lost loved ones to a horrific tsunami.

Despite school holidays, last weekend proved relatively quiet at the movies, with cinemas still shut in Sydney and other parts of the country.
Theatres will remain closed in Australia’s largest city and its surrounds, including the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Wollongong and Shellharbour, until at least July 9.
Capacity restrictions remain in place and masks are compulsory in cinemas in the rest of Nsw, as well as several other states.
Cinemas in Western Australia’s Perth and Peel, as well as Darwin and Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, were also closed for part of the weekend, reopening on Saturday. Lockdown restrictions in parts of regional Queensland ended on Friday, followed by Brisbane on Saturday evening.
As such, the top 20 titles tallied just $6.8 million, down 25 per cent on the previous, according to Numero.
However, exhibitors outside of Sydney have high hopes for this weekend, with the latest instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe,...

Just over a week ago, The Fate of the Furious revved into cinemas, posting the highest opening weekend since the pandemic began. Many exhibitors were therefore excited about the future promise of school holidays and two other upcoming major releases, The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard and In The Heights.
But what a difference a week can make. New outbreaks of the virus are impacting cinemas across the country and disrupting the market.
The situation is rapidly evolving, but cinemas in Greater Sydney, including the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Wollongong and Shellharbour, are now shuttered amid a city-wide lockdown that will last until at least July 9.
That date will already see Sydney cinemas shut during the highly anticipated release of Disney/Marvel’s Black Widow, directed by Aussie Cate Shortland, on July 8.
Elsewhere in Nsw, mask-wearing indoors, including cinemas, has been re-introduced, as has the one person per four square metres rule.
