Inspired by Allahabad's famous traditional Puppet show: Gulabo & Sitabo the film not only carry's the same name but also the same traits of Gulabo & Sitabo along with their argumentative relationship. Well the movie might not be everyone's cup of tea but trust me when you see this film with satirical lens you'll realize how real and bitter the film is exposing human nature describing the irony of human relationships taking advantage from each others situation. The film is a slow burn takes its complete time to introduce and to make every character familiar which was completely justified as this movie heavily relies on its supporting casts rather only to its leads. Vijay Raaz as Gyanesh Shukla a government officer from archeological department was totally lit no doubt his performance was one of the best in the movie, as usual full marks to him, other supporting casts includes Brijendra Kala as Lawyer & Srishti Shrivastava as bold & a street smart sister of Baankey were equally good and make their presence felt. Talking about the leads the Deadly Duo the legend Amitabh as Mirza & in-form Khurrana as Bankey, their chemistry specifically in argumentative scenes were lit and not only that the USP of the movie is actually the constant arguments between the characters which at times were not completely hilarious or laughable but very natural and relatable. Take it as disappointment or surprise Ayushmann's impact in the movie is low may be because of his character's requirement, on the contrary the star of the show is definitely Amitabh Bachchan the persona and the efforts that was required to play that character totally nailed by Mr. Bachchan even in his late 70's he not failing to impress he was simply effortless.
Not the best work from Shoojit Sircar but some solid performances makes it a watch worthy movie

2 Hours felt like 4 Hours

Well, don't know what was more annoying, the lukewarm script or the constant forced fights n arguments between the two protagonists or the length which surprisingly is of just two hours but it felt like you've spent four hours and are just waiting for it to end asap.
Simple yet touching

A beautiful tale of some crazy people and their fight for an old Haveli.. Another must watch from Shoojit Sircar.. The story is so simple yet touching, makes you think who is right and who is wrong. Music is great and the cinematography is also very nice. The inner beauty of Lucknow city is depicted truly.
A Heartwarming Political Satire
pritambag12 June 2020
A very heart warming story yet a political satire executed in a much much monotonous manner. From nuisances of the two main leads, Shoojit Sircar gave a delicate message regarding greed and possession. The different shades of human nature highlighted in a humorous manner. The Cinematography of the movie was really awesome. The way the shots have been taken throughout Lucknow, it gave birth to a different cinematic perception. It includes some great performances like the ones from Big B, Vijay Raaz and Shristi Shrivastava. But I found Ayushman Khurana's performance a bit underwhelming in comparison to his previous performances. That may be due to the fake accent which he tried to make while delivering dialogues. Still the movie itself is one of a kind and beautiful like any other Shoojit Sircar's film. Do give it a watch.
This is indeed a beautiful film and a must watch. Gulabo and Sitabo is showing signs that satire is emerging as the new genre in the Indian film industry.
thecontentkeeda12 June 2020
This film shows all the conundrum revolving around a certain property in a chucklesome manner. As Mirza is trying to be the legal owner of the Haveli, he involves a lawyer into the matter. And, as Bankey is trying to protect the rights and roof of the tenants, the government gets involved. Everyone has their personal interest in the property, the lawyer wants to sell the land off to the builder and the government uses all its tricks to acquire the land. These things are totally shown in a dramatized and a humorous manner and it doesn't all come heavy with information or emotions. It is a purely- light hearted film.
Also, due appreciation needs to be given to Amitabh Bacchan's acting. His large nose, his way of speaking and walking complement to the character that Bacchan is playing and not the other way round. Ayushmann Khurrana and Amitabh Bacchan play their characters so well that it is hard to imagine the film with any other actors. Vijay Raaz plays as an officer of the Archaeological Department and Brijendra Kala plays the lawyer and no words are needed for their performances.
The film with cleanest message
tpatoliya12 June 2020
Gulabo Sitabo film is a straightforward film for Shoojit Sircar, who has made films like Vicky Donor, Madras Cafe, Piku, and October.
This tale contains the soul, the cleanest message, the rumor of life, the life, and the people around us. There is no need to emphasize your mind anywhere.
Juhi Chaturvedi has kept this film flat like Piku. Gulabo Sitabo is actually the name of two puppets who, like the narrator, describe the character of the characters in their spectacle.
The story of the tenant landlord's sighs is very funny but Shoojit Sircar forgot to show it as fun. The film starts very slowly when it catches its pace, then it is on the verge of ending
The focus of this entire story is on the mansion which is beautifully integrated into the proceedings. This is so much that it feels like a character.
The message of the story is very clear but the problem is that the story has been overwritten in the screenplay. A good aspect of the film is the dialogue between the characters.
Ayushmann Khurrana shows himself as a Lucknowi tenant super confident and plays his part naturally. He captured the tone and body language well.
Amitabh Bachchan has physically pushed his character well which makes you spellbound. However, he appears to be struggling just against heavy make-up.
The main attraction of Gulabo Sitabo is actress Farrukh Jafar in the role of Begum. She wins hearts whenever she comes on screen. Overall, the life of the story is Begum, who also lives in the last of the film.
In the role of Ayushmann's sister, Srishti Shrivastava has given her performance with complete honesty. Her part is good and she plays her well. She tries to give the film a bit of strength by taking it on her shoulders.
Brijendra Kala and Vijay Raj attract attention.
Shoojit Sircar's gripping direction is the highlight of the film. How to make a very flat story fun with your scenes. The director slowly exposes the individual layers and takes us neatly to the point he wants to convey.
Overall, Gulabo Sitabo has enough to make it worth watching. It's long and trimming parts can work wonders. The good thing about Gulabo Sitabo is that in the male-oriented film, writing shows very strong women characters.

Feeling sleepy
ShriArunKumar12 June 2020
I just want to thank that I did not pay for this super-boring movie, as it released on Amazon Prime. It is the most boring movie I have seen during this lockdown. Saw it in the morning from 9 am to 11 am, and at 11 am, I'm feeling extremely sleepy. How will I do my Work-from-Home now? Should have never seen this crap.
First half bores, second half keeps it alive.
pranayjalvi12 June 2020
Gulabo Sitabo is a slow paced movie that won't excite you much as you think. Amitabh Bachchan as Mirza was very good in this otherwise puzzled movie about legality of land and properties.
The script was good and so was the cinematography. However the pace was slow and it did started to bore at a point where the scene became a bit dramatic and chaotic. The second half, with bit of tenant owner battle and dispute ignites some spark though.
You might still enjoy it given the performance of the main leads and the quarantine situation. But it was a letdown by Shoojit Sircar when compared to his previous ventures.
My Rating : 2.5/5

The price of greed, the priceless Amitabh Bachchan
Peter_Young28 March 2021
Amitabh Bachchan is one of the greatest actors that I can imagine, and with each new film he proves it beyond the slightest shadow of a doubt. In this film, he plays Mirza, a disgustingly greedy old miser, and his transformative acting elevates his name a little more in stature, if that sounds possible anymore. Hardly recognizable under heavy prosthetics, he erases everything he can possibly be associated with to become Mirza in a performance that is incredibly well-detailed and yet looks so unaffected and lacking in self-consciousness. With his blurry and indistinct speech, quiet tone, lame and gawky gait, and the watchfulness in his eyes as he attentively listens to his costars, Bachchan mumbles his way through the film and captures with amazing precision the external fuzziness of this pathetic old man but also the clarity of his indecent, acquisitive intentions. What he does with a role that could so easily have become a caricature is beyond words, but above all, at the end of the day, it's just such a commanding act - watching him is a true cinematic experience in and of itself.
This is, by and large, the trump card of Gulabo Sitabo, an amusing satire which could have been a stupendous movie had it just edited out some of the massive overdetailing and the many subplots. The film boasts of respectable production values, great sets and decorations, and the dialogue is really very good. The irony is just palpable in this film, which has many characters all of whom are immoral and quite ridiculous in their own way and with their different misdemeanors. The music is also great, and the score is good albeit too obvious and redundant at points. Among the other actors, Ayushmann Khurrana enjoys playing unlikable as Bachchan's foe, but it is clearly Farrukh Jaffar, in a miniscule role spread out across the film (which still gives her top-billing, probably courtesy Bachchan), who steals the show with her incredible dialogue delivery. She is a delight all the way. The conclusion of the story is comic and tragic in its irony, presenting a nice message on the price of greed, which often makes people lose much more on their way to reaching much less. Still, it is Bachchan who makes it a must-watch.

Soojit Sircar escapes his great flop....
janasuman12 June 2020
Soojit Sircar escapes hus great flop by releasing the movie on digital online platform.... this movie was not made for a bollywood release.... story has not been developed fully but the movie stopped...
.
script was not good...no such good humourous dialogues not a memorable scene in the whole movie....
.
it leaves you wondering when will be the movie catches its speed...but in your huge despair you'll find suddenly the movie ended.....
.
only good thing is acting.... everybody acted joyfully soulfully....
It's a very deep multi-layered film with lots to say...
srakras12 June 2020
Gulabo Sitabo is a well-crafted satirical film with a picturesquely crumbling mansion at its center. It's a film rich in details, be it the characters, relationships, desires, lust, insecurities, or the ploy. Amitabh Bachchan plays the grouchy 'Mirza' with a character actor's delicacy and attention to detail. Ayushmann Khurrana once again brings something new to the table with his body language, which portrays sadness and bitterness borne out of poverty. Vijay Raaz is effortless as ever, and Brijendra Kala is also terrific. Shrishti Shrivastava deserves a special mention. Last but not the least, Farrukh Jafar is an absolute delight to watch. Despite few dull moments and a bit slow, the film manages to string all the loose ends well together in the end. The thoughtfully well-written songs in the backdrop add texture to the film. In short, the film explores different traits of the mortals with an underlying message through a simple, quirky, and enchanting story in a subtly humorous way. In case you miss it, the director's nonchalant reference of the chair depicts it all in the end.
Boring, extremely boring
bitansarkar-7657712 June 2020
Just saw the movie. Slow and boring with literally ZERO, NADA, NILL, NO story at all. Only if you wish to waste your time, you can go ahead and watch. There are unnecessary scenes and most importantly one of the stupidest ending. It will feel like someone is telling a story and meandering the plot flow, and in the end, they thought the movie was too long and need to end, so they just wrapped up the story within 10mins! And classifying it as comedy is itself ironical like the characters of the movie, with NO comedy!
Soul Sucking Film
saurebhgandle12 June 2020
It's the film that sucks the soul out of you for first 1 and half hour and gets fast in last 15 min. No action or comedy , no good music . In short zero entertainment value. The dialogues are forgettable. No good message at the end since conflict wasn't clear in first place. Not much to say. I didn't get point of this film & why it was named Gulati-Sitabo.Amitabh is decent, Ayushmann has done far better work. And their confrontation scenes which should have been the soul of the film fail to keep viewers engaged.
Film can be skipped.I see no reason to watch or recommend such movie in time of lockdown/quarantine.
Waste of two big talent- Ayushman Khurrana and Amitabh Bachchan.
Soggy like a vest after a day's workout
draadityabajaj12 June 2020
Good thing that producers have online platforms to release movies these days, or else the distributors would have been on for a huge loss.
Undercooked story, slow and shoddy screenplay, poor unfunny dialogues, overacting by AB (can barely make out what he is saying, and totally dependent on subtitles) and the list goes on. Only positives were AK and a string of supporting characters.
Halfway the writer forgot if he was trying to make a comedy or a drama.. And the result is gulabo sitabo.
Please keep your expectations low.. And sit through it, only and only because there is no cinema releasing in theatres no live sports due to the pandemic.

🎬 GULABO SITABO (2020) REVIEW 🏯
.
.
📜 Plot : Two scheming men constantly at loggerheads, one for existence and one for greed. How the fight goes on is shown in the movie.
👨⚖️ Review : Gulabo Sitabo is a dramatic satire explaining the detrimenting effects of greed. Despite an interesting premise the movie tends to start too slow and seems draggy at most parts, but the leads Bankey and Mirza make you sit throughout. Gulabo Sitabo has some moments of witty humour added with some really good performances but overall movie is just average. . . 👍 Goods : Amitabh as the grouchy , shrewd Mirza has again given us a fine performance. Shristi Srivastava and Vijay Raaz Brilliant. . . 👎 Bads : Movie has a draggy build up and conflicting climax. Guess Why A Movie with Ayushmann And Amitabh Bachchan was released directly on OTT. Explains a lot. . . 🔥 Final Rating : 7/10 . . ✅ Recommendation : Expectations! Don't rush in the film thinking about what you'll get because trust me that'll work as a buzzkill. Just go in, enjoy and come back with a smile! One Time Watch. .

Slow and uninteresting
Vikky000712 June 2020
I had high expectations with this movie but I got bored halfway. Amitabh as usual has over acted. He has a knack of overdoing these peculiar old aged characters. Overacting ki dukaan. Story needed some introduction and backstory. Giving 6 stars for other supporting characters who acted well.
Hilarious Satire

I don't know what's the issue here with rating... But it's a damn Good Story.... Not a glamorous but a simple yet eye soothing tale.... Well Written and directed by Shoojit sir and Juhi ma'am duo.... It's a multilayered Fiction of our society...
Sometimes you don't need tell out everything loud... If you know how tell a story with message like Shoojit Sircar 🖤
It may be not his best work.. But it's worth a watch.

Gulabo Sitabo (2020) :
Movie Review -
A confined and narrow topic gets a little funny treatment but couldn't fight its own mess somehow. Gulabo Sitabo is the same old topic about Greed and excessive hunger hence making the narrative and ending very much predictable. However, it creates a little fun with the help of characters and situations. It goes on to touch cheap level sometimes but otherwise it generates humourous laughters. There are plenty of loopholes in the plot around the characters and legal procedures which could have been handled with precautions but wasn't helped.
Gulabo Sitabo tells a story of Mirza (Amitabh Bachchan) who has married an older woman for the sake an Ancient Mansion and one of his tenant Baankie (Ayushmann Khurrana) who is also looking for his share and opportunities to get something which never belonged to him. Later, the predictable conflicts such as Politics, Legal Actions and Archeology departement's interest make a solid mess. This mess somehow is enjoyable at some level. Gulabo Sitabo begins on a slow note wasting so much time on introduction of the characters and after spending almost 40 minutes on that the real fun begins. But the treatment given towards the end is not upto the mark considering the potential of the subject.
Ayushmann Khurrana as Baakie is strictly decent. His accent works very well but only of you are familiar with Lucknow's traditions. Amitabh Bachchan as Mirza is Fantastic and undoubtedly the Best Performer among the cast. Vijay Raaz, Brijendra Kala and rest of the supporting cast does a fine job. Music is too dark and therefore looks dull despite the fact that it was highly situational. Dialogues and Cinematography are okay.
Shoojit Sircar gets the conviction right but somehow his storytelling is outdated and typical. Also, Gulabo Sitabo has plenty of loopholes in the story, characters and screenplay. Some characters behaves so dumb and that too without any reason or clarification. The legal events too doesn't make much sense. Shoojit Sircar could have worked on these shortcomings and Gulabo Sitabo would have definitely became a Must Watch product. For now it is a Good film and one time watchable thing which could have easily came from any ordinary bollywood director with ordinary cast. Ayushmann Khurrana continues his chain of Good films but the level of standard is one down this time.

A solid Bachchan performance drives this middling Shoojit Sircar film! [+51%]
arungeorge1312 June 2020
Shoojit Sircar's 2020 film, set mostly in and around a Lucknow mansion, bears a striking resemblance (in its central theme) to Charles Dickens' novella A Christmas Carol. Amitabh Bachchan plays Mirza, the husband of Fatima Begum and the aged landlord of the mansion; the character is sketched very much like a desi Ebenezer Scrooge. He's extremely materialistic, weighs money and assets over virtues, and while he doesn't exactly hate his wife who's on her deathbed, he doesn't love her either. Ayushmann Khurrana plays Baankey, one of the tenants who lives with his sisters at the mansion.
As you'd expect from the combination of director Shoojit Sircar and writer Juhi Chaturvedi who've collaborated earlier in Piku (better than this flick), October (much better than this flick), and Vicky Donor (their best thus far!), their signature tongue-in-cheek humour and quirky characters can be seen to a mild extent in Gulabo Sitabo too. Starting off as a property dispute between landlord and tenants, the story on one side proceeds into the "archaeological" landscape with the entry of Gyanesh (Vijay Raaz). On the other, Christopher Clark shows up as Mirza's lawyer, to help expel the tenants. While Mirza's undying desire to become the sole owner of the mansion is highlighted, the film struggles to maintain its narrative tempo.
Primarily because of its original "crumbling haveli" setting and the capability showcased by the Sircar-Chaturvedi duo in bringing such unusual places buzzing with zealous energy, I expected Gulabo Sitabo to be much better. Bachchan pulls off a pretty solid performance given his age and the makeover, but Khurrana feels wasted. Other than the Lucknow dialect and demeanour, there's nothing much here that challenges the actor in Khurrana, who's adored big time for getting 'ordinariness' right. We also get interesting supporting acts from Srishti Shrivastava who plays Guddo the lusty-yet-brash sister of Baankey, and Farrukh Jafar who plays the feisty-in-her-90s Fathima Begum.
Gulabo Sitabo fails to incite emotional responses the way Sircar's previous ventures did. The mansion, captured in all its dilapidating glory by DOP Abhik Mukhopadhyay and punctuated by Shantanu Moitra's soothing music, is probably the strongest character in the film. Why don't we even get a standout scene between Bachchan and Khurrana? This seems like a missed opportunity.

Amitabh Bachchan Steals The Thunder, Ayushmann Khurrana Is Commendable In This Light heart-ed Comedy
ketgup8312 June 2020
When you have two extremely talented actors - Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana, working together for the first time coupled with a master storyteller Shoojit Sircar, you expect nothing but a marvelous cinema. Is Gulabo Sitabo worth spending time ? Let us find out..
Based in the charming city of Lucknow, Gulabo Sitabo tells the story of a miser, rude and unapologetic landlord of Fatima Mahal mansion, Mirza (Amitabh Bachchan), who persistently squabble with his tenants, especially Baankey (Ayushmann Khurrana) over a meagre monthly rent. As the clash leads to legal matter, external parties interferes with their own agenda and try to grab their own piece of cake.
The master storyteller, Shoojit Sircar, is back with Gulabo Sitabo after giving us powerful cinemas like Yahaan.. , Vicky Donor, Madras Cafe, Piku and October. His way of storytelling strive for excellence which shows in his films and Gulabo Sitabo is no different. The film opens with tussle between Mirza and Baankey which is definitely hilarious and will surely bring down the house as both actors play their part with convincing act. The first 25 mins will keep you engaged while love war between Mirza and Bankey goes into legal matter as external parties (Vijay Raaz as archaeologist and Brijendra Kala as property lawyer) begin to getting involved
Post 45 minutes, the film starts loosing the steam especially the fight over the Fatima Mahal mansion becomes intense as more members get involved to grab their part. This is where writing takes a back seat and movie become slightly monotonous while the climax becomes mediocre. Written by Juhi Chaturvedi who have successfully collaborated with Shoojit Sircar with strong content dramas like Madras Cafe (dialogue) , Piku and October, the hit jodi is not in form this with Gulabo Sitabo.
Gulabo Sitabo has a decent art director while Cinematography is basic. The background score is average while only one song "Do Din Ka Yeh Mela" which comes as end credit starts rolling is good. Shoojit Sircar's 6th directorial venture has dependable characters right from Ayushmann Khurrana's sister, Guddu, till Begum which are well-defined. Talents like Vijay Raaz and Brijendra Kala do justice to their roles
Coming to the lead actors, it is Amitabh Bachchan's show all the way. The powerhouse of talent is simply a treat to watch. Amitabh Bachchan hits the bull's eye with his sparkling performance. Watch for him as he locks the all the toilet doors in the mansion so that none of his tenants can use it. Ayushmann Khurrana does a fine job as Baankey who exudes confidence with his dialogues and expressions.
So, overall, Gulabo Sitabo works due to the enduring performances of the star cast. The comedy-drama does have few rib-tickling comedy scenes which will keep you engaged. Good 3/5

Good 3/5
