Dean Cain- not a Super man here
Rcwilkinson12319 October 2007
The 136th episode of the "Smallville" series welcomes former "Superman" actor Dean Cain back into a show about the Man of Steel.

However, he's not so great and super as he was in the early 90's with Teri Hatcher. In 'Cure,' he's a maniac doctor named Curtis Knox who knows how to do brain surgery on meteor freaks, removing their infection. However, he wants to kill them in the aftermath! Before any of the main characters realize this, Chloe Sullivan goes to see Dr. Knox to remove her infection. Only after a surprising helping hand from now-nemesis Lex Luthor is Clark able to resolve the problem.

It was great to see another actor from the "Superman" movie and/or TV story on the show. He marks the first actor from the Superman mythology on screen that wasn't in the Christopher Reeve films. All the others- Reeve, Margot Kidder, Annette O'Toole, Terence Stamp- all were from that era. In addition, as far as the plot went, it was interesting to see Lex actually assist Clark. Could a piece of Lex's heart actually have changed?

Vandal Savage aka Jeremiah Danvers
sophiejensen-1306328 September 2023
After watching Legends of Tomorrow I learned that Curtis Knox was a name assumed by immortal madman Vandal Savage, and is one of his more popular aliases. I assume that's who Dean Cain is here: the Smallville version of that minor DC villain. But what's kind of cool is the connection to a future series. In Supergirl Dean Cain stars as Kara Danvers/Kara Zor-el's adopted father Jeremiah, a recurring character. As well as far more obviously starring in Lois and Clark new adventures of Superman in the 90's. And apparently it's a continuing trend. Teri Hatcher also stars in a few episodes of Supergirl and one episode of Smallville. But while Dean Cain's character is far less likable here, compared to the others he plays in Superman productions, he shines MORE as an actor. Bringing a humanity and an emotionalism to someone who until the very end is a single-minded mad scientist type of character. That it's hard to imagine he feels anything except the need to never be alone again.

Warning: Spoilers
At the beginning of the episode we see that Chloe runs into Sasha Woodman, classmate of Smallville high school with kryptonite powers, whom we met in "Drone", 18th episode from season one performed by Shonda Farr, where she ordered a swarm of bees to attack their competitors so she can win the election for student body president. This time Jovanna Huguet portrays her, and here she assures not remember what happened and tells Chloe that a doctor helped her by removing her powers but she lost some memory.

Far from his heroic role as Superman in Lois and Clark TV show, Dean Caan plays the psycho doctor Curtis Knox. An immortal meta-human who tries to revive his bride, died many decades ago by removing organs from his patients, this character reminds me of Mr. Freeze from Batman. We don't see what happens to him in the end but I have the theory that he was sent to Phantom Zone.

There's also a scene of a conversation between Clark and Lex in which for a moment Lex seems to be aware of Clark's abilities, and Clark acknowledges having taken a life as collateral damage to save somebody (he actually didn't kill Knox though, but he didn't know it). Is not the first time this has happened, but the only reason that Clark feels remorse here (or whatever) is that Lex Luthor was the rescued one, this ain't new either. However Lex thanks Clark by aiding him find Knox so he can save Chloe.
