12 Hour Shift: I didn't believe the hype, I shouldn't have
Platypuschow5 August 2023
Plot

Over the course of one 12-hour shift at an Arkansas hospital in 1999, a junkie nurse (Angela Bettis), her scheming cousin (Chloe Farnworth), and a group of black-market organ-trading criminals (Mick Foley, David Arquette, Dusty Warren) start a heist that could lead to their imminent demises.

Cast

Consistently demure Angela Bettis teams with David Arquette, while we get a small role from wrestling legend Mick Foley.

Verdict

12 Hour Shift was a recommendation, truth be told it would be way down the line when I would have watched this otherwise if at all.

A thriller rather than a horror it's a rather tame little number that stays within the lines and at no point becomes even remotely adventurous.

Bettis plays quite a different character than usual and I wasn't keen on that, nor was I keen on her character at all. In fact that's one of the biggest problems with the film, who am I supposed to be rooting for here? Not a decent person among them.

It plods along like if Lifetime made horror movies and managed to keep my attention just enough but not enough to make it memorable or to truly say I enjoyed it.

Very distinctly average stuff, not good, not bad, just 86 minutes of meh.

Rants

Is it wrong that I wanted to see more Foley in this? Truth be told his presence wasn't really needed after his scene but it was just nice to see him in this film despite very much playing a character it's hard to believe if you're familiar with the guy in real life. I'd welcome a sequel if only to have him as the antagonist. More Mick Foley is always going to be a good thing.

Breakdown + Chloe Farnworth was great here + David Arquette was believable in his role
  • David Arquette's character had little impact
  • Very mediocre overall
  • Not enough Foley!

Not bad and rather fun
miahveronee23 March 2021
It's surely worth a watch. Not exactly the greatest bit of cinema but believe they really accomplished what they set out to make.

Quirky Horror, Overall Not To Bad!
martimusross23 January 2021
12 Hour Shift

This was a kinda horror farce from the start, it was low budget, there is a lot of blood, and overall I enjoyed it.

There was something quirky and different with the acting and the central roles were very funny.

Overall I giving this a 6/10 for turning out to be unexpectedly good fun.

not for a "mass viewer"
conyo4 October 2020
... and I think therefore I am a "mass viewer". Lead actress (drug-ridden nurse trying to make ends meet, working in some god-forgotten hospital, in 1999) was good. But that's pretty much it. Movie was abysmally slow, plot started interesting (ended tragifarcically) but the whole story should've been told in 30 minutes (not 90) - and don't get me started with that irritating soundtrack. Definitely not for me. Avoid.

Very well done and entertaining. Started out like a roller coaster when it starts its climb and then lets it rip.

The definition of "meh"
begatthenephilim28 January 2021
Given the cast I thought I'd be in for a delight. The acting was fine. It's just boring as hell and nothing happens to make it worth a watch. Offbeat comedy for sure, it missed the beat completely. I laughed one time so I'll give it a 3 for effort and casting. Not a comedy horror at all. Just a meh "dark comedy". Woof! Even for a first feature feature film. Brea Grant is not coming out swinging that's for sure.

Angela Bettis pretty much guarantees a good horror.
Patient4444 October 2020
Ever since I saw her in May I have become a big fan of her and started following her work. I noticed she isn't quite down with blockbusters and always picks smaller projects, and to be honest those are perfect for her, as she manages to bring some soul into the movie and usually steals every scene.

The exact same thing happens in 12 Hour Shift, where her face is everywhere, setting the tone of the movie perfectly and genuinely gets you to enjoy your view. As for the movie per se, it is a great experience, very well build together, a lot of treads that get tied together in a very humorous way, and some unexpected turns every here and there. I am surprised that this one is not more popular, people surely have heard of it by now, so to them I say, go and check it out. You will have a good time watching a different kind of horror comedy - one without gore but with brains.

12 Hour Shift is a great example of little cinema, of fresh horror and a good direction.

Cheers!

Good idea made with
spinoff752 October 2020
If you read the synopsis you probably say 'it worth it' but no. All the bad actors involved and the silly resolution made the movie fail. Angels Betts is the only cast member who plays a decent part, the rest of the nurses, patients and organ traffickers are SO LAME! David Arquette's cameo is so cliché (only because he's the producer) ñ. The screenplay also have big holes like the absence of a duty doctor. No hospital in the world is running by nurses much less in a night shift.

David Arquette is the killer shackled down in bed! Who wouldn't like that?
gedikreverdi23 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Mandy's depressed mood all throughout the movie was very convincing. Regina the sleazy transporter played the dum sociopath blonde very well withh all the character's clichés and her 90s look is awesome. No one cared about the hypochondirac guy and he took all the organs from the freezer. The moody black nurse, the fidgety scared, the elderly woman patient with dementia and the guy fom the organ mafia whose eye was poked by mandy all the characters was fun to watch. Ann above all, seeing David Arquette felt good even as a lunatic cop killer. Oh and that soda Spurty!

Nothing about this movie worked for me. There are so many stupid parts and eye-rolling moments. Nothing came close to making me laugh. I could tell it was a bad movie almost immediately but i still gave it a chance. Everyone was annoying and weird. (1 viewing, 4/12/2021)

Surprisingly awesome!
Top_Dawg_Critic20 October 2020
Actress Brea Grant doesn't have many notches on her belt for writing and directing, but wow did she make this dark horror comedy awesome!

The 86 min runtime was just right with the great pacing. The cinematography and score were excellent. The casting was perfect, especially with Angela Bettis' straight-faced character contrasted next to Chloe Farnworth's "dumb blonde" persona.

Her screenplay was solid - better than some films I've recently seen from seasoned filmmakers. The comedy was on point with many wtf and lol moments. The 80's style horror scenes were just right with great gore, and there were many thrills in the various multiple storylines intertwined perfectly.

Mad respect and props to Grant for pulling off this little gem. I'll be watching this one again with friends who haven't seen it. A well deserved 8/10 from me.

I'm not leaving without a kidney
nogodnomasters13 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Mandy (Angela Bettis ) is a nurse at the Little Rock hospital in 1999. She is working a double shift tonight. It is not a problem as she snorts a white powder to stay awake. In her spare time she harvests organs and sells them. Her ditzy cousin Regina (Chloe Farnworth) is the transporter. Unfortunately she forgot the product while talking and had to travel back for it. It is missing and they need a kidney ASAP. There is a cop killer handcuffed in one of the rooms. Things get out of control.

This was a fun dark comedy. Things become jumbled at the end and a little less enjoyable, but still fun. Great characters.

Guide: F-word. Butt nudity. No sex.

Another worst horror film! Full of plot holes, and annoying overuse scene! Bored to freaking death!
kwenchow1 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This film start with a woman "Mandy" talking with her colleague, and she selling a kidney to her cousin "Regina" scene! As turnout, this film is about Mandy need to steal another kidney for Regina, after Regina forget to put the kidney inside her cooler container! Entire film full of boring conversation, and annoying overuse scene! Such as, overuse of the playing dumb scene, overuse of the middle fingered at people scene, overuse of the stealing organ part scene, overuse of the annoying song playing at the background scene, overuse of the dumb dancing scene, overuse of the dumb singing scene, and overuse of the slow-motion walking scene! Make the film unwatchable! All the killing scene just saw the the blood after the killing, messy, and portray by sideways! Make the film frustrated to watch! At the end, Mandy push away the last organ trafficker! Still have a post credit scene! Mandy waking up from her car, and back to work! That's it! Wasting time to watch!

Dark bloody fun
AlabamaWorley19718 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Who knew that going into business with your idiot cousin (by marriage) selling organs you've harvested from dead hospital patients could go SO wrong? The great Angela Bettis goes through the weirdest bloodiest nurse's shift ever, complete with Y2K prep, an escaped convict, and a gangster (in a straight turn by wrestler Mick Foley) who wants the damn kidney he paid for and he don't much care who it comes from. This pitch black comedy thriller never takes its foot off the gas. Standout performances throughout, especially Ms. Bettis, as always, and British Chloe Farnworth doing a pretty great Southern fried moron as Regina. Saw it on Hulu in the U.S.

Doesn't impress
Leofwine_draca13 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Not much of a film. Weirdly posited as a black comedy/horror/thriller set in a hospital at night. An illegal organ harvesting scheme is going on and the protagonist (former MAY starlet Angela Bettis) is actually involved as one of the nurses. We also get David Arquette as his usual scuzzball and a sterotypical dumb blonde. A fair bit of killing takes place but with unlikeable characters and a lack of narrative drive, it doesn't really impress.

"They'll Steal Your Kidney"
ez_magdales6 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The movie was moderate. It wasn't the best nor the worst. The whole plot was interesting since you'll get intrigued of the future situation of Regina who is dumb but humorous. She has a mission to steal someone's kidney for her to avoid jeopardy which affects Mandy who is a nurse. I was somewhat entertained whenever Chloe Farnworth's character pops out 'cause she might be stupid but she plays the funny part of the movie. We have Angela Bettis (who I knew from Carrie 2002) who plays the straight-face nurse who likes to take care things strict and serious. The movie starts with an ordinary, modern part (which I honestly was bored) but then the thrilling adventure of finding a kidney made me interested. Will Regina finally get the kidney she wants or will she be dead? Will Mandy ever help regina or will she be escorted out from her job? I dare you to watch the movie and your kidney will be snatched!

P. S. Watching James A. Janisse recent Dead Meat Kill Count recommended me to watch the movie. It was worth the watch!!!

Stupidity and violence, none of which is caused by Mick Foley
aeongale3 October 2020
Highlight of the film is Bettis' character and performance as she must endure idiots ruining her day and making it worse as things get comically out of hand. The comical antics are more likely to have you shaking your head than laughing though, unless you still find Scary Movie funny. If you can get past the stupidity, the thriller aspect of trying to illegally trade organs while everything is going wrong is rather enjoyable. Weird music throughout might be jarring to some but I quite like it. Arquette's role is small enough not to ruin it, while sadly Foley's is a cameo with a few lines, so if you're a wrasslin' fan just here for him don't bother.

Dark Comedy Not Horror
nashw8224 March 2021
Damn this was funny, and dark, and bloody... but I'm not sure it's horror. More like horror adjacent. Sure, it contains horror elements, and the gore and practical effects are good fun, but its definitely a comedy. A hospital full of crazy characters, a junkie nurse involved in a little organ harvesting and a crazy cousin with the IQ of a chihuahua. A fun movie where everything that can go wrong, does go wrong, and every attempt to fix things just makes it so much worse. David Arquette has a small role but he's looking fit. The cast are hit and miss but the dark comedy is consistent, and you'll definitely cringe a few times and laugh out loud a few times too.

Comedy, NO!
gab-675993 August 2021
This was not funny, it was just annoying! Gina was a character that you just wish would die. Even the insertion of Arquette and a nude Farnsworth could not save this horrible movie! I normally enjoy low budgets but this was just not one. Then there was Bettis, who was just not believable as a nurse, junkie yes but nurse, no. No caption made the parts between Bettis and her coworker impossible to even hear. It was like the were whispering in another language, so thanks for that sound ppl. I do not recommend if you like movies with logic in them or even entertaining ones at that.

Tragically magnificent
Yiannis_Galidakis3 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Angela Bettis' top notch seriously depressive addict acting can only be matched by tremendous and beautiful Chloe Farnworth's unimitable portrayal of your typical dumb blond whose power of stupidity is invincible. If a fan of irony, sarcasm and black humor, that's your movie. Don't miss it. -2 only for being a little slow at the beginning. But it does catch up eventually and when it does it's the absurd logic of Murphy's Law of the wild Grizzly bear's intentions, approaching the unsuspecting happy go lucky camper.

welcome to faulty fowls
ops-525353 October 2020
A dark solid wicked black comedy has been born, with inquests of deep desperation and twist to stay boyant in the water. that combined with a very unusual choice of score, rythmic opera made the madness even deeper like a turmoil of hell.

its about organ trafficking at a hospital in usa, the nurse and her in law cousin with connections to the mob , supply them with fresh kidney for a hand of doe. one night suddenly a kidneys goes missing when delivery is done, and the saga tell you the chaotic brawl to get a new one within 2 hours.

its a lowbudget film, but extremely well made. just some technical glitches here and there, with the darn daylight. its blood and gore, its witty caracters are so well acted by the small cast, and the production design along with good direction, makes this a charade at level of the british ''faulty towers'' but far more bloody and messy.

it aint a horror movie, ita a bloody comedy, and if you like one brain and a lot of brainless caracter in one go, then its a recommend from the grumpy old man

This movie must watch.
amine-20102 October 2020
12 hour shift 2020 first of this film is bloody fantastic and crazy from start to finish i really enjoyed this film so much , this movie has a lot of organs everywhere ,blood everywhere, tired nursers, killers, psychopath, good bad cops gosh everything was top notch Really fun and enjoyable dark comedy that keeps you entertained for the entire thing. This movie doesn't take itself too seriously and for that fact does an amazing job and creating balance between the horror tropes and comedic effect. directing really good , acting all cast they did a great job especially actress @Chloefarnworth she did a outstanding job a bloody beautiful and full crazy chick that she want to just enjoy in hospital 12 Hour Shift is dark humor at its best, with plenty of violence and unexpected moments of levity to tie into a quirky, entertaining knot. Super fun watch and would definitely recommend to any friends here that love those fun and funny horror .
