When a rowdy Shiva's world collides with that of a shy Aastha, sparks fly between them.

But given their completely different backgrounds, is there any scope for their romance to bloom and survive?

'Malaal' is set in the Mumbai of the late 90's. Twenty two-year-old Shiva (Meezaan) is the local 'tapori', spends his day getting into street fights, drinking and gambling.

Shiva finds himself falling in love with Aastha, but her Family have already written shiva off as a good for nothing But soon enough, it seems Aastha too is falling for him.

Malaal is a simmering love story that sucks you into its world. While it may not have the grandeur and lavish scale but captures the flavor of a Mumbai chawl beautifully.

Overall the movie is a sweet romantic love story with soft moments to cherish.

The film is not extra-good but the love story won't leave any Malaal in your heart for sure.

The movie started well but it's as though the writer suffered from short term memory loss. A certain plot is introduced and then forgotten about. I also don't get why the girl has to fall for a guy who pursues her and is not willing to take a "no". What's the message being given? Sharmin can't act! She had the same expression throughout the movie. The writer probably suffered writers block and wrote the script based on a lot of old movies. This has been done multiple times but in this case, it was a job badly done.

A pretty decent debut for Mezaan Jaffrey but what's wrong with the leading lady. No expressions at all. Blank face in the whole film. Khair, Mezaan Jaffrey has a bright future ahead if he keeps on working hard like his father. The girl needs to stick to her basics and learn some acting.

A CONVINCING DECENT LOVESTORY WITH OUTDATED ENDING

MALAAL REVIEW :

Malaal was never there in my watch list for some reasons but somehow i managed to catch the film with zero expectations. Thank god those Low expectations are surpassed, unexpectedly though. Malaal may have convincing plot from the start but loses that conviction in the last portion of the film. Out-dated fashion of ending this Love saga hurt it badly to reduce quality of one good enough, and certainly watchable film. Although I expected some political propagandas to spoil the film, which were never found and i am happy for that.

Coming to the story, Shiva More (Meezaan Jafri) is a Ruffian guy from a lower middle class family who has no ambitions in life falls in love with a an Intelligent, educated girl called Aastha Pandey (Sharmin Segal). Since we know the typical plot of Bollywood Movies where Hero-heroin have problems at first 2 or 3 meetings but later that hatred turns into Love, the same happens here. A Maharashtrian Falls in for a North Indian girl, now this is something copied from regional films but luckily not so regular in Mainstream Bollywood cinema. Overall Plot is convincing and it is convincing fully, i mean, one can connect with the characters quickly because of local flavour. Screenplay is realistic and it is presented in realisic manner with the help of Perfect production design. A smoothly going love story almost win the heart but then old fashioned climax with a flavour of sacrifice (accidentally) arrives to kill entire atmosphere and interest built over 120 minutes.

What works in the film? It is Acting of Meezaan and Sharmin, Characterisation of Shiva and Aastha, Production design, Mixed and suitable Music, localism in dialogues and behaviour, realistic screenplay and incompleteness. What goes wrong is outdated Climax, slow pace in 2nd half and director's vision to end the story. As a whole, Malaal is a good looking, fully convincing sweet tale of love but the same goodness doesn't last till the end. With better climax i mean something different other than mainstream 90's decade lovestories would have made Malaal a Good Film, however it is still a one time watch. It is not that bad either if i am not being too harsh.

Well it's the regular stereotypical bollywood movie but I really like the way it executed. Everyone knows the ending. The acting of all the artists are worth watching. Still don't get it the reason of such low IMDb rating. All and all it's worth watching on TV to dive into it in spite of watching any illogical star kids movie.

Bollywood has lately focused on making movies on this particular genre but what makes Malaal bad from the others is the fact that either this movie is targeted for 14 y olds or the director dont know how to write a mature flick.

Writing my first ever review. Never wrote one in my life before. This movie is definitely 9/10. A must watch. A beautiful love story with a taste of classic love. Just love it. Maybe a very unexpected ending but....

It's a lust story, not a love story.

Just because there were tears, and he "loved" her, and she died, doesn't make it a love story. She was full of herself, a big tease, and played with his emotions because she liked the attention and his physique. Women need to know men like him rarely change permanently and they need to know the red flags to look for. He was a future wife beating drunkard and gambler in the making. This may be what Indian women are used to, thus the rave reviews, but not acceptable in other parts of the world. I gave it a rating of 4 because it kept my attention and it was beautifully filmed, otherwise no stars because it's irresponsible.

The movie opens on a cricket field with a political angle. You expect a story with a political climax. In fact, in the first half, there are some scenes where you will get a rough idea about the climax. But till the climax story writer completely forgot about the plot point they created. At one point I felt it's almost 2 hours and now the climax will come but I was only one hour into the movie. The movie felt too long.

Cinematography is also great but it's really confusing. They used lights in such a manner that it felt really visually satisfying. But here it confused us to that level that it becomes impossible to know whether it's night or day.

Acting is not that good. And the story itself is flying from one dead-end to other so I won't recommend watching this movie.

This is a beautifully crafted movie which is delicately subtle. Its subtle in all its aspects - be it the location, its foundation, its content, the performances, and the music. In fact it can appear so mundane, that not everyone will be able to garner its beauty. The makers and the artists clearly have genuine love and belief in the story. A story does not have to be entirely unique to pass a qualification of a great movie. Special mention to both the debutants, Meezan Jaffrey and Sharmin Segal for the amazing, amazing performances. This movie needed debutants beause of the innocence inherent in the movie's theme and core, and they have done a wonderful job. Their honesty glows on the screen. It will be a pity for the Indian film industry if we don't see more of this talent in the future. Each of the artists that form the male protagonist's group of friends are extremely good as well and add so much to the story itself. The music is soothing, melodious, hummable (which we don't get much these days), and grows on you. Its also very much entrenched in its environment, its folksy, classic...beautiful! Another aspect that is superb is how the life of the chawl is woven so seamlessly with the love-story - again, it reflects how honestly the makers have build this story. I really want to thank Mr. Bhansali and the entire team for bringing out this movie exactly the way it is. This one is to stay in the heart for a long, long time.

Ok I usually do not write reviews for movies but for this one I have write just after finish watching it. This movie is amazing and it has a beautiful love story and life lesson. The new actor Mezaan has so much potential and his acting and expressions are on point. I feel like this movie should get much better reviews and its actually way better than any recent love stories. I am pretty sure this movie is going to be a cult classic, will watch it again!

Watching this movie I feel that our indian cinema is on another level for creating master pieces like that, end is bit harsh but it relate to real life consequences that make this one remarkable. Job well done by all the characters.
