Usually on television, character development seems to be a fine balancing act between abrupt and gradual. Ted Lasso has been able to achieve that balance, especially in the portrayal of the character Jamie Tartt. At the beginning of the show, he was introduced as a self-absorbed football genius who didn’t care about much else.
His journey from arrogance to humility is neither continuous nor quick. There’s a very important scene that shows the nuanced progression of his character arc. This scene in Season 3 Episode 6, called “Sunflowers”, where Jamie starts to confront his past traumas and begins his reconciliation journey with his own self, depicts the show’s commitment towards the portrayal of human growth in its most authentic form.

David O Russell has Shutout on his slate, with Jenna Ortega and Robert De Niro set to star. More on the film here.
Back in the 1980s, Martin Scorsese went through a period of being a director for hire and being Martin Scorsese, the results were a joy to watch. Perhaps the most fun film to watch from the Goodfellas director’s ‘gun for hire’ era was 1986’s The Color Of Money, a thrilling sports drama starring Paul Newman and Tom Cruise visiting smoky pool halls and parting locals from their hard-earned cash.
The pool hustling genre is a pretty shallow one and nothing has arrived in the decades since to spirit away The Color Of Money's crown. A couple of contenders tried at the turn of the century, including Pool Hall Junkies and Stickmen. It feels like a long, long time since we’ve even seen a high...

Robert De Niro will star opposite Jenna Ortega in Shutout, a character-driven drama directed by David O. Russell and written by Alejandro Adams. The film will be introduced at the upcoming Cannes Film Market by Black Bear, with CAA Media Finance overseeing domestic rights. Produced by Russell, Joe Roth, Jeff Kirschenbaum, and Mark Bomback under the Rk Films banner, Shutout is set in the world of high-stakes pool and explores the shifting dynamic between a seasoned hustler and a rising talent.
De Niro plays Jake Kejeune, a longtime figure in underground pool circles. Years of competition in smoke-filled backroom halls have left him with sharp instincts, hard-won experience, and few illusions. He crosses paths with Mia (Ortega), a young player whose raw ability reignites something dormant in him. Seeing a chance to shape her into a champion, Jake offers guidance, pulling her deeper into the game’s hidden rules and unpredictable outcomes.

Jenna Ortega and Robert De Niro will star in Shutout, a new movie from David O. Russell. 2022 marked a game-changing year for Ortega. She starred in X that year, in addition to co-leading Scream (2022) opposite Melissa Barerra. That was also the year in which she debuted as the star of Netflix's Wednesday, which then paved the way for a role in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice(2024). De Niro, on the other hand, a screen veteran, is coming off of projects like Zero Day (2025) and Killers of the Flower Moon (2023).
Per Variety, Ortega and De Niro will lead the cast of Shutout, a new movie that explores the world of pool hustling. The Oscar-nominated Russell will direct and produce the film, which features a script by Alejandro Adams. Black Bear is set to launch sales of the movie at the Cannes Film Market later this month. Robert De Niro will collaborate again with director David O. Russell, adding a Gen Z icon to the mix: Jenna Ortega.
IndieWire confirmed that De Niro and Ortega will play a pseudo Paul Newman and Tom Cruise for Russell’s version of “The Color of Money,” titled “Shutout.” Ortega is set to star as the ingenue pool hall amateur who learns the ways of lifelong pool hustler De Niro. Deadline first reported the news.
The official synopsis reads: “De Niro plays Jake Lejeune, one of the last masters of a vanishing craft — the pool hustler. Having lived and lost by the roll of a ball in smoky backroom halls, Jake encounters Mia (Ortega), a young prodigy whose raw, electrifying talent reignites a fire he thought long extinguished. Kim Kardashian’s and Taylor Swift’s feud has become infamous in Hollywood. Tracing back to 2016, the two have had very public bad blood because of Kanye West and his obsession with the singer. After the couple tried to manipulate the world into thinking that Swift was a snake, the singer naturally wasn’t going to go down without a fight and receipts.
While most of Swift’s anger towards the situation was targeted towards West, The Tortured Poets Department featured a song that not-so-subtly called out Kardashian for the role she played in the entire situation. Although it seemed like Swift wasn’t getting her revenge, it would seem that their feud could get reignited because of recent events.
Is Taylor Swift acting again?
Although Taylor Swift is best known for her singing and songwriting capabilities, she has dabbled in acting over the years. While fans collectively agree that...

Sammy Hagar’s The Best of All Worlds Las Vegas residency kicked off Wednesday night at the Park MGM. The Red Rocker and his band, which includes guitarist Joe Satriani, bassist Michael Anthony, drummer Kenny Aronoff, and keyboardist Rai Thistlethwayte, stuck largely to the setlist they brought around to North American amphitheaters last summer, with some very notable surprises.
The first one took place at the top of the show, when they opened with “Encore, Thank You, Goodnight,” the brand-new song that Hagar claimed he wrote with Eddie Van Halen in a dream.

Like any workplace, tensions can get pretty high on Hollywood sets. Actors and crew members are often working long hours day after day to create something that is the singular vision of one person: the director. When that vision isn't clear enough for everyone to see, or that director is maybe not a healthy collaborator, things can come to a head very quickly. That's why there's a stereotype of directors being very controlling, argumentative, and narcissistic, given that, in the case of most studio films, there's a lot of responsibility on their shoulders to make a good film.
We've all heard stories about famous actors who refuse to work with each other, despite the on-screen chemistry their characters displayed. However, fewer people know the dirty details about actors who hated working with certain directors, whether it be a matter of personalities clashing, actors not being invested in the project, or...

Kathryn Hahn and Sienna Miller have joined the cast of David O Russell’s biopic about the creation of the John Madden Football videogame series.
If you’re only familiar with the name John Madden because of the long-running Madden NFL series of American football videogames, then fear not: director David O Russell appears to know this. The filmmaker’s currently in the process of making a biopic called Madden that isn’t digging into its subject’s long sporting career, but rather the development of a Sega Mega Drive that bore his name.
Madden will star Nicolas Cage as the retirement-age athlete, who finds himself a fish out of water in the geeky world of late 80s and early 90s game development. It’s now being reported by Deadline that comedian and actor John Mulaney will play Trip Hawkins – the founder of studio and publisher Electronic Arts who managed...

The Oscar-winning Rami Malek seems to be returning to his roots. Having first broken out with a starring role in the television series Mr. Robot, Malek witnessed a further breakthrough after starring as Freddie Mercury in the musical biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. He won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance, and went on to appear in a couple of mega-budget hits. However, this week's thriller The Amateur marks his first starring role since Bohemian Rhapsody six years ago. The movie opened to mostly positive reviews, but had an exceptional audience response.

Peter Falk wasn't the first choice to play the titular detective on "Columbo," but it's safe to say that he nailed the role and became synonymous with the character for most of his career. The actor helped turn the '70s procedural into a bona fide success story, winning a bunch of Emmys in the process, and making audiences fall in love with his trench coat-wearing, scruffy crime-solver. What's more, Falk's portrayal of Frank Columbo inspired Christian Bale's performance in 2022's "Amsterdam," proving that he's had a long-lasting effect on popular culture. However, Falk wasn't the only actor to leave his mark on the series, as his wife, Shera Danese, set a record for her contributions to the show.
Overall, Danese appeared in several episodes of "Columbo," making her the most featured guest star in the series' history. Her debut, which came about in the season 6 episode "Fade In to Murder,...

It’s Anya Taylor-Joy’s world. We are just living in it. Her latest film, The Gorge, recently became Apple TV+’s biggest launch. The streaming giant doesn’t normally disclose specific numbers, but exceptions tend to be made for Number 1, which was the case with the new flick. A recent report by Deadline reveals that the film has driven double-digit growth globally for the streaming service and boosted new viewership figures by over 80% since its debut on Friday, February 14. Impressive!
Taylor-Joy has been on a roll in the 2020s, wowing fans with her performances in Peaky Blinders, The Northman, Amsterdam, Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. She also did excellent work on The Menu, a movie that continues to soar, two years after its release. In February, the black comedy horror hit Netflix’s Top 10 chart in U.S., proving that quality never goes out of fashion.

Another fascinating look into a movie with Subhash K Jha’s This Day That Year series. This time, he turns the focus to the film that changed cinema and created history. Queen, directed by Vikas Bahl, which turns 12 years old on March 7, is to women’s empowerment in Hindi cinema, what Deewaar was to the anti-establishment cinema.
Queen, to a large extent, changed the way we looked at the shero, then known as the heroine.

In December 2024, as a film-tv force, Uruguay came of age, co-hosting with Cannes Film Market, Ventana Sur, Latin America’s biggest film-tv market, held since 2009 in Buenos Aires.
Easy-to-work and welcoming, Ventana Sur also showcased what Uruguay can bring to the table.
That, as of 2024, is rather a lot and cuts two ways: “Both production services on foreign shoots and international co-productions,” says Marcio Migliorisi, head of international affairs at Uruguay’s film-audiovisual agency Acau.
Put together, they make Uruguay an ever-stronger film-tv hub and port-in-the-storm on a now highly volatile Latin American film-tv scene.
One game changer has been Uruguay’s sky-rocketed international shoot scene.
Since 2019, Uruguay has hosted Keanu Reeves’ “The Conquest,” with troops storming Montevideo’s central Plaza de la Independencia. The country also saw Bill Condon shoot the prison scenes of “Kiss of the Spider Woman” and Brazil’s “Senna,” using Montevideo’s airport to create a racetrack.

Four major recent releases from Disney have disappeared from the Disney+ streaming service in the UK – one of which is now exclusive elsewhere.
I’m going to have a go at trying to work out how the ins and outs of Hollywood studios go, but still confess it baffles me a bit. Back when Disney acquired the 20th Century Fox movie studio and its assorted projects, it infamously laid out thousands of staff and culled dozens of movies that were in development. For anything to sneak through that process was a bit of a minor miracle.
Thus, when we learned that Gareth Edwards’ sci-fi film The Creator – originally known as True Love – was being backed by Disney money, it was something of a surprise. Released under the 20th Century Studios label, this was a standalone, non-franchise sci-fi original, costing $80m to make, and just as much to release and market.

Released under the 20th Century Studios label, this was a standalone, non-franchise sci-fi original, costing $80m to make, and just as much to release and market.

Christian Bale is thought by many to have become an “actor’s actor.” He is fully committed to his characters, often staying in character during shooting, and he is not afraid to lose or gain weight in order to make a character more believable, as was the case with his Oscar-nominated role as former U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney in “Vice.”
Good reviews are something that Bale has gotten used to during his three-decade film career, beginning with his starring role in Steven Spielberg‘s “Empire of the Sun” when he was only 13 years old. In that time, Bale has been nominated for three Oscars (winning one for “The Fighter” with bids for “American Hustle” and “The Big Short”), three Golden Globes and five Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations of which he won two (for “The Fighter” and “American Hustle”). His 2022 films included “Amsterdam” for David O. Russell and “The Pale Blue Eye...

After turning to The Greatest Showman filmmaker Michael Gracey to helm its live-action remake of Tangled, it seems Disney is now exploring several exciting options when it comes to the movie's cast.
In recent weeks, Thunderbolts* star Florence Pugh has emerged as the supposed frontrunner to take on the role of Rapunzel. Agatha Hahn, Jennifer Lopez, and Demi Moore have all been named as possibilities for Mother Gothel, and another wild casting rumour has just hit social media.
According to scooper @MyTimeToShineH (via Toonado.com), 14-time Grammy Award winner Taylor Swift is being eyed for the lead role of Rapunzel. That doesn't mean she's in talks for the movie or even interested but the singer is someone the House of Mouse is interested in.

Mike Myers was a mainstay on Saturday Night Live from 1989 to 1995, creating such memorable characters as Dieter, host of the avant-garde German variety show Sprockets, the mundane superhero Middle Aged Man, and, of course, Wayne Campbell, whose public-access show Wayne's World became a sensation, spawning the catchphrase "party on!" and two theatrical films in the 1990s. Myers's stint on SNL led to a long career in comedy, with the actor appearing in the Austin Powers and Shrek movies, to name just a couple of his achievements. With so much comedic gold to offer viewers, it may come as a surprise that Myers wasn't always so sure of himself.
In an appearance on Vulture's Good One podcast (via Entertainment Weekly), Myers revealed that when he first arrived at SNL, he was completely blown away by the talent surrounding him.

Anya Taylor-Joy had a big 2024 working with acclaimed directors, between her surprise cameo in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, and her starring role in George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The actor indeed snagged the role of Imperator Furiosa in Miller’s newest action epic thanks to the recommendation of another big-name director, Edgar Wright, who cast her in his dreamy 2021 horror film Last Night in Soho.
Oscar-nominated director David O’Russell also dialed Taylor-Joy’s number, casting her in his 2022 all-star period film Amsterdam, as did M. Night Shyamalan, who put the actor in his Unbreakable sequels Split and Glass. But the first major filmmaker to recognize Taylor-Joy’s talents was Robert Eggers, whose 2015 psychological-horror movie The Witch proved to be the actor’s breakthrough. Taylor-Joy returned to the wild world of Eggers for 2022’s brutal revenge film The Northman.

David O Russell’s upcoming biopic of the American Football legend John Madden will star Christian Bale and Nicolas Cage. Not a combustible trio at all, that.
We’ve known since August that Nicolas Cage would be playing John Madden in David O Russell’s next film, Madden, a biopic of the NFL legend. The film will chart Madden’s rise from the head coach of the Oakland Raiders to becoming one of the best-known football reporters in America.
As if Nicolas Cage and David O Russell weren’t enough of a creatively combustible pairing, Christian Bale has now also joined the cast as former Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis, according to The Insneider (via World Of Reel). Bale and Russell have collaborated several times before, including on American Hustle, The Fighter and Amsterdam. The thought of Bale and Cage going toe to toe onscreen is an exciting one, as...

They say this town is ruled by fear. They say it’s all gloom these days when not outright doom. They say Hollywood just isn’t what it used to be. Not warm, not wild, not fun.
They may be right. But they obviously aren’t spending time in proximity to Colleen Camp, the if-you-know-you-know fairy godmother of the film business. A veteran character actress turned social networker extraordinaire turned indie producer, she’s close friends with seemingly every bold-faced name in the industry — from Jerry Bruckheimer to Da’Vine Joy Randolph (who name-checked her in her Oscar acceptance speech this year) — and who has in recent years built a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most influential awards-season players. Camp’s intimate, no-press-allowed screenings, high-powered parties, star-studded dinners and assorted taste-making receptions have already altered the trajectories of scores of Oscar campaigns.

"What a beautiful day for a bloodbath," says a perpetually enraged stock character in a new war epic from director Mikael Hfstrm (1408). In fact, despite its 151 minutes, "war epic" might not be the first term that comes to mind while experiencing Stockholm Bloodbath, based on true events that transpired in Scandinavia during the year 1502 as confirmed via the opening title card that reads, "A great deal of this actually happened."
This is Exhibit A in how "black comedy" might instead come to mind as a better way to describe the new feature film, and your cinephile mind might jump to the similar "loosely inspired by" works of, say, David O. Russell upon reading said title card. His Oscar-nominated comedic thriller American Hustle opened with the card, "Some of this actually happened." Meanwhile, his film Amsterdam begins with the tagline, A lot of this actually happened.

Anya Taylor-Joy wants to play Elsa in a live-action remake of Frozen for Disney, and it would easily make up for the box office bomb she starred in this year. Disney has been slowly working its way through its entire catalogue, turning all of its animated classics into modern live-action blockbusters. It started out with Cinderella and The Jungle Book, then the billion-dollar success of their remakes of Aladdin and The Lion King encouraged the studio to go all-in on these live-action redos.
When asked about her dream roles, Taylor-Joy said she wants to star in a musical and suggested shed love to play Elsa in a live-action Frozen. Although Dune: Part Two and The Super Mario Bros. It’s been an eventful summer for Disney, and not under ideal circumstances. After his wife’s death because of food allergies at a Disney park, a man struggled to pursue legal action against the company due to his Disney+ subscription. Then, “X-Men: 97” showrunner Beau DeMayo shared a series of posts elaborating on his termination, and his attorneys told IndieWire that he’s preparing to sue.
The headlines have people considering whether to keep subscribing this month — but if you’re a parent, there’s no real replacement. The kids can tune in to “Lego Pixar: Bricktoons,” “Chibi Tiny Tales,” “Disney Jr.’s Ariel,” and more, as well as new episodes of the K-pop series “Are You Sure?” There’s also a big Marvel premiere, but more on that below. Hulu gets a ton of new movies including the “Die Hard” franchise, “Freaky Friday” (which has a sequel in the...

That’s Chappell as in Chapel, not Chapelle. Get it right. While it may be a “Brat”-summer for most, there’s no denying the unrelenting energy 26 year-old singer-songwriter Chappell Roan has thrust upon society with hit songs like “Hot To Go!” and “Pink Pony Club.” It is truly her world and we’re just dancing along, but in a recent chat with “Saturday Night Live” player and “Las Culturistas” host Bowen Yang for Interview Magazine, Roan admits that, despite the doors her newfound fame is opening, she is solely focused on her music career at the moment.
When asked if acting may be in her future, Roan said to Yang, “I say this with peace, and love, and blessings: Actors are fucking crazy.”
Yang couldn’t help but agree, but Roan was quick to acknowledge that he stands apart.

Director David O. Russell has faced renewed scrutiny over his reputation for unruly conduct on film sets. Actor George Clooney recently criticized Russell during an interview, calling the director a “miserable f***” and saying it was not worthwhile to work with him.
Clooney’s remarks stem from his experience filming “Three Kings” in 1999. He claims Russell verbally attacked crew members and engaged in a physical confrontation with Clooney himself. Clooney described the production as “the worst experience of my life.” However, Clooney is just one of many who have alleged improper behavior by Russell.
Numerous other actors and crew have told of Russell’s erratic conduct over two decades. According to a leaked video, Lily Tomlin was loudly berated by Russell while filming “I Heart Huckabees” in 2004. Christian Bale reportedly had to intervene on behalf of Amy Adams during “American Hustle,” as she struggled with Russell. Other incidents involved Russell...

David O. Russell is in the news again, but not for a new project. The director, who's brought audiences such eclectic films as "Spanking the Monkey," "American Hustle," and "Silver Linings Playbook," has built a reputation as one of the most chaotic filmmakers working today, and on more than one occasion, firsthand accounts have emerged alleging that the chaos tends to veer into verbal abuse -- or worse.
Russell still seems to have support in the industry: In 2022, more than two decades after the first reports of Russell's alleged on-set bullying and violence emerged, the filmmaker released "Amsterdam," a star-studded film featuring the likes of such beloved famous folks as Margot Robbie, Anya-Taylor Joy, John David Washington, Robert De Niro, Michael Shannon, Timothy Olyphant, and even Taylor Swift. The movie starred Christian Bale, a frequent Russell collaborator who extolled the virtues of the controversial filmmaker while doing press for the movie.

We need someone to break this one down for us. Nicolas Cage, who just played a serial killer in “Longlegs,” is going in a completely different direction for his next role. Cage will portray a truly beloved icon of football and the NFL, John Madden. Boom!
Cage has been set to star in “Madden,” the next film from director David O. Russell that is set up at Amazon MGM Studios, IndieWire has confirmed. He’ll portray Madden throughout his tenure as the coach of the Oakland Raiders back in the 1970s, all drawn from an original screenplay by Russell. More-specific plot details have yet to be revealed. It’s also unclear how deeply into his life story the film will get, whether it extends to his broadcasting career or his role in the massively popular video-game franchise that continues to this day even past his death in 2021. As a matter of fact,...
