Usually on television, character development seems to be a fine balancing act between abrupt and gradual. Ted Lasso has been able to achieve that balance, especially in the portrayal of the character Jamie Tartt. At the beginning of the show, he was introduced as a self-absorbed football genius who didn’t care about much else.

Two-time Oscar winner Robert De Niro and Emmy nominee Jenna Ortega (Wednesday) will star in director David O. Russell’s upcoming pool hustling drama Shutout. The film will mark the fifth time De Niro and Russell have teamed up on a feature. The two have previously worked together on Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, Joy, and Amsterdam.

Alejandro Adams wrote the screenplay, and Russell, Mark Bomback, and Rk Films’ Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum will serve as producers.

Timothy Olyphant is the latest addition to the cast of the upcoming Apple TV+ limited series “Lucky.”

Variety has learned that Olyphant has joined the series alongside previously announced lead Anya Taylor-Joy as well as recently announced cast member Annette Bening.

“Lucky” is based on the novel of the same name by Marissa Stapley. The book was a New York Times bestseller and a selection for Reese Witherspoon’s Reese’s Book Club. Per the official description, Taylor-Joy stars as “a young woman who left behind the life of crime she was raised in years ago, but must now embrace her darker, criminal side one final time in a desperate attempt to escape her past.”

Olyphant will play John, Lucky’s father.

This marks the second Apple series in which Olyphant will appear. Variety exclusively reported that he will star in an upcoming golf comedy series at the streamer alongside Owen Wilson.

Four major recent releases from Disney have disappeared from the Disney+ streaming service in the UK – one of which is now exclusive elsewhere.

I’m going to have a go at trying to work out how the ins and outs of Hollywood studios go, but still confess it baffles me a bit. Back when Disney acquired the 20th Century Fox movie studio and its assorted projects, it infamously laid out thousands of staff and culled dozens of movies that were in development. For anything to sneak through that process was a bit of a minor miracle.

Thus, when we learned that Gareth Edwards’ sci-fi film The Creator – originally known as True Love – was being backed by Disney money, it was something of a surprise. Released under the 20th Century Studios label, this was a standalone, non-franchise sci-fi original, costing $80m to make, and just as much to release and market.

"What a beautiful day for a bloodbath," says a perpetually enraged stock character in a new war epic from director Mikael Hfstrm (1408). In fact, despite its 151 minutes, "war epic" might not be the first term that comes to mind while experiencing Stockholm Bloodbath, based on true events that transpired in Scandinavia during the year 1502 as confirmed via the opening title card that reads, "A great deal of this actually happened."

This is Exhibit A in how "black comedy" might instead come to mind as a better way to describe the new feature film, and your cinephile mind might jump to the similar "loosely inspired by" works of, say, David O. Russell upon reading said title card. His Oscar-nominated comedic thriller American Hustle opened with the card, "Some of this actually happened." Meanwhile, his film Amsterdam begins with the tagline, A lot of this actually happened.

DC Studios co-head and Superman director James Gunn has confirmed the casting of Matthias Schoenarts as Krem in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Reports last month indicated that the Belgian actor had signed on to play the main villain in the upcoming Craig Gillespie-directed movie.

Gunn responded to a fan on Threads seeking confirmation regarding Schoenarts' involvement and role in the Supergirl film. "Yes, he is. He's such a great actor," Gunn confirmed. Schoenarts will play Krem of the Yellow Hills in the film adaptation of Tom King's eight-issue comic book series, also titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. In the acclaimed book, Krem slays the father of a young alien girl, Ruthye Marye Knolle, who enlists Supergirl's help to seek retribution. The Girl of Steel is drawn into Krem's orbit after he injures her dog, Krypto.

The record announcement arrives alongside the release of “Babylon,” its first single performed in one take from the top of a building in New York City in an accompanying live performance video.

“Babylon” is one of 10 songs set to appear on Every Dawn’s a Mountain, most of which were written following the musician’s move to New York and during his time on the road with Mitski earlier this year.

Supergirl is based on Tom King’s 2022 comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which Bilquis Evely illustrated. Ana Nogueira adapted the comic book for the big screen. In that comic, the bad guy is Krem of the Yellow Hill, who kills a young alien girl’s father. She draws Supergirl into the conflict.

Timothy Olyphant is set to appear in the untitled golf comedy series starring Owen Wilson at Apple TV+, Variety has learned exclusively.

The show was originally picked up for 10 episodes at Apple in March. Wilson will star alongside fellow cast members Peter Dager, Marc Maron, Mariana Treviño, Lilli Kay, and Judy Greer. Olyphant will appear in a guest star role.

Per the official logline the series follows Pryce Cahill (Wilson), “an over-the-hill, ex-pro golfer whose career was derailed prematurely 20 years ago. After he gets fired from his job at an Indiana sporting goods store and his wife walks out on him, Pryce hedges his bets entirely on a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom (Drager).

Olyphant will play Clark, described as “a successful, former golf pro who once toured with Pryce.”

Director David O. Russell has faced renewed scrutiny over his reputation for unruly conduct on film sets. Actor George Clooney recently criticized Russell during an interview, calling the director a “miserable f***” and saying it was not worthwhile to work with him.

Clooney’s remarks stem from his experience filming “Three Kings” in 1999. He claims Russell verbally attacked crew members and engaged in a physical confrontation with Clooney himself. Clooney described the production as “the worst experience of my life.” However, Clooney is just one of many who have alleged improper behavior by Russell.

Numerous other actors and crew have told of Russell’s erratic conduct over two decades. The director, who's brought audiences such eclectic films as "Spanking the Monkey," "American Hustle," and "Silver Linings Playbook," has built a reputation as one of the most chaotic filmmakers working today, and on more than one occasion, firsthand accounts have emerged alleging that the chaos tends to veer into verbal abuse -- or worse.
