- Miguel fights in the valley championship, in his mind, and in reality lies in a hospital bed after he was crippled during the battle at West Valley High two weeks ago. The news is reporting on it as a "karate riot", sending shockwaves through the community. Student organized a peaceful protest of gathering and song. The school administrators are holding a community meeting that night to answer questions and settle fears.
Johnny goes to Applebee's and drinks, creeping out the customers. The wait staff discuss how to get Johnny out, since Johnny refuses to leave. The head waiter finally tells Johnny to settle his tab and move on, and threatens to call the cops. As the waiter storms off, Johnny sees a report on the TV about the police still looking for Robby, who crippled Miguel, and objects when another patron changes the channel to a game. Johnny gets in the man's face, and drops the remote on the floor as he leaves.
The man and his friend go to their car in a nearby parking garage, and Johnny punches through the driver's side window and grabs the patron around the neck and pulls him out. The friend comes over and easily dodges Johnny's drunken kick, then beats him. The first man recovers and kicks Johnny while he's down.
Johnny is arrested and taken to the station.
That night, Daniel and his wife Amanda arrive at the school. Amanda is furious that they suspended their daughter Sam for two weeks, and says that everyone against them and the dealership is a ghost town. Daniel insists that it isn't that bad, and his wife tells him that it is. Amanda apologizes for snapping at Daniel, and Daniel says that he' got them into it and he'll find a way to get them out.
At the meeting, the school board makes it clear that NEA regulations mean that no teachers can get involved in a fight between two students. They want to know how it won't happen again, and Counselor Blatt says that they have a new initiative of Hugs, not Hits. The parents are unimpressed, and Principal Lopez says that there is zero tolerance for karate.
Daniel stands up and says that karate isn't the problem, and says that he was bullied when he went there and karate saved him. One of the parents has heard that Daniel was the real bully, and Amanda asks why it's appropriate that Sam got suspended. When one parent yells that Sam was tramping around with Tory's boy, Amanda takes offense and Daniel comes to her defense. Another parent notes that Daniel's student hurt Miguel, and Daniel sits down, shocked and hurt.
In jail, a prisoner asks Johnny if his infected foot looks infected. Meanwhile, one of the officers recognize Johnny from the times they've arrested him at other restaurants, and goes over to confront Johnny. He recognizes Johnny as the father of Robby, and Johnny says that Robby is nothing like him and is a good kid. The officer points out that Robby is a fugitive, and Johnny asks him why he's there instead of out looking for Robby. The officer says that Robby killed Miguel, and Johnny asks what happened to Miguel. The officer tells him that Miguel has been in a coma for two weeks, and probably isn't coming out of it.
Sam is in her bedroom packing her books for school, and looks at the cuts on her arm that Tory left when they fought.
At Valley High, security guards check all of the students' backpacks. Hawk and his two friends try to hit on the new freshmen, but they know about Hawk's bedwetting incident that was brought up at the party. One of them greets Demetri and his friends as they come by, and Hawk comes over and confronts them. Hawk tells Demetri that the security isn't enough to protect him, and Demetri says that he doesn't need security guards.
Blatt comes over and asks if everything is all right, and Demetri sarcastically says that they're all buddies. The two groups go on their way, and Moon tells her friend Yasmine that half of the kids know karate now so Yasmine should be nicer. Moon says that Aisha's parents moved away and took Aisha with him.
Sam is going through one of the security checkpoints, and the other girls look at her and stare. She goes to the balcony where Miguel and Robby fought and remembers Miguel falling and being crippled. Demetri taps her on the shoulder, startling her, He reminds her that they're on the same team, and Sam excuses herself.
At the dealership, Daniel is on the phone checking the hospitals and homeless shelters, trying to find Robby. He doesn't have any luck, and Louie comes over and calls Daniel and Amanda over to see something on his computer. Before they go over, Daniel tells Amanda that Louie cares about the family no matter how much he's screwed up in the past.
Louie shows them that a spreadsheet that he made, and the inventory numbers don't match up. They're messing a minivan, and it's been gone a couple of weeks. Amanda and Daniel figure that Robby stole it, and took the minivan because he figured they wouldn't notice the low-end minivan. Amanda wants to call the police, but Daniel says that if they find Robby first and convince him to turn himself in, they can make a better case. Amanda reluctantly agrees, and Daniel tells Louie to find the VIN number and text him the GPS.
Johnny goes to the hospital to see Miguel. Miguel is still imagining himself fighting in the championship, while Carmen and Rosa wait at his bedside. Carmen begs Miguel to come back to them while in his mind Miguel loses the fight. The nurse tells Carmen that Miguel can hear her, and she should remind him that she's there. Rosa takes her grandson's hand and kisses it.
Johnny comes into the waiting room and asks the receptionist to see Miguel. The receptionist tells him that only family is allowed to see Miguel in the ICU, and Johnny fails to convince her to break the rules and be a "bad girl". Johnny notices a doctor's coat and figures that he can "borrow" it.
Daniel follows the GPS on the minivan, and finds the discarded tracker in a park. He calls Amanda and tells him what happened, and Daniel realizes that there's one place nearby that Robby might have gone
In the restroom, Johnny puts on the coat and practices pretending to be Dr. L. Nguyen, according to the nametag. A man comes out of a stall, sees Johnny's face, and realizes that he's not a doctor. After the man quickly leaves, Johnny realizes that his deception won't work and throws the coat in the garbage. He rams his head into a hand towel dispense in anger, and knocks it off the wall. Going back to the receptionist, he holds a cloth to his bleeding head and tells her that he needs to see a doctor.
Daniel goes to the Miyagi dojo nearby and finds Sam there. She says that Robby isn't there, and Daniel wonders why she isn't in school. Sam says that she thought she was ready but everyone was staring at her so she came there. Daniel tells her that he gets it, but Sam says that it's different when it's a girl who is in a fight. She feels guilty about what Miguel and Robby are going through, and Daniel tells her that if it wasn't for him and Johnny, there wouldn't have been a fight in the first place. Daniel blames himself, but insists that what's important is that they try to be the good guys. He tells Sam that he can't run away from his problems, and hugs her.
That night, Johnny has his injury tended to him. He shows the nurse and receptionist a huge bruise on his back, and they go to get a doctor. Johnny finds Miguel and apologizes for not being there, and says that Carmen doesn't want him around. He says that he thought he was helping Miguel, but failed him. Johnny takes Miguel's hand and apologizes.
Miguel continues fighting his opponent. Meanwhile, Johnny tells Miguel that he knows he has what it takes to pull through but he has to keep fighting and never give up. The nurse comes in, sees Johnny, and tells him that only family are allowed.
Daniel goes to the Cobra Kai dojo and calls to Johnny. Kreese steps out and says that they're closed, realizes who Daniel is, and tells him that the dojo has gone through some renovations and Johnny isn't there but will be back. He says that it's a tragedy what happened at the school, but he doesn't blame Robby. Kreese continues taunting Daniel, saying that it must hurt seeing the Miyagi name dragged through the mud.
When Kreese calls Miyagi a "little bastard", Daniel starts to come at Kreese but restrains himself. He points out that Miyagi kicked Kreese's ass several times, and Miyagi taught him "true karate" and that's why he's not going to fight Kreese. Kreese tells Daniel that inevitably he will, and the next time he and Johnny will finish it once and for all. Daniel says that Kreese won't do anything while he's around and leaves, and Kreese says that Daniel knows where to find him.
The next morning, Sam goes to school, goes over to the girls talking behind her back, and tells them to say anything to her face. They say nothing, and Sam walks off.
Johnny is drinking and goes home, and finds Daniel waiting for him. He says that he found Kreese at the dojo, and Johnny doesn't want to get into it. Daniel tells Johnny that he has a lead on Robby but he thought Johnny would like to help. He figures they both want Robby to be safe, and they're the only ones Robby has.
At a park filled with homeless people, Robby counts his remaining change.
Amanda walks up the stairs where Miguel was crippled.
Daniel tells Johnny that the kids got into trouble because of them, and they can't let them suffer because of their issues.
At the hospital, Miguel flatlines.
Daniel tells Johnny that they have to work together.
Miguel beats his opponent and comes out of his coma.
