A big, loud, formulaic crime mystery that's made for the money
Detective vs. Sleuths, written and directed by Wai Kai Fai, is essentially a Milkyway film produced through the China-Hong Kong co-production machine. It is a bigger-budgeted, louder and dumbed-down police actioner that's constantly speeding to the next scene. Sean Lau is as always an engaging lead but is unfortunately sidelined as a cog in a larger formulaic machine.

As a string of brutal killings storms Hong Kong, Jun Lee, once a brilliant detective in the police force who was let go after a mental breakdown, conducts his own investigation the victims are all connected to his past cases. Yee Chan, a police detective who was a victim of one of the past cases, enlists Lee Jun's help to find the killer.

Sean Lau Ching Wan is easily the best part of the film. He plays a rehashed version of his lead role in The Mad Detective as a cop who solves crimes with supernatural abilities, which Lau improves upon by acting out the ghosts that converse with him. It's entertaining watching Lau's rapidly changing facial expressions talking to himself.

Charlene Choi tries her best but is unconvincing as a distinguished police detective. She overplays her character's vulnerability, looking like she's constantly on the verge of tears and not communicating an investigative mind solving the case at hand. On top of that, her character is pregnant and questionably partaking in dangerous action head-on. It is not more ridiculous than say running from a dinosaur in high heels, but it lacked conviction. In an interview, Choi was asked about her role preparation and said she was only told what to do on the day and thus what we see is her genuine reaction to everything.

Carman Lee is wasted as the police madam explaining the plot to the audience. Based on acting chops alone, I could picture Carman Lee doing a better job as the female lead if this was made back in the day.

Who had the final say on Detective vs. Sleuths? I'll never know. It plays like a movie made by its money backers cashing in with established formulae, which outweighs the creative parts of the script.

Wai Ka Fai sets up the mystery in an interesting way, but he is completely uninterested in exploring his own high concept. The rapid-paced editing never gives a moment to breathe or contemplate the crime. Most of all, the film repeatedly drowns itself in long monotonous shootouts that lack weight or consequence. The "pew pew pew" way the guns were fired, the bullets may as well have been orange rubber darts.

What the film tries to sell as depth is ridiculous. What father lovingly teaches her daughter Friedrich Nietzsche quotes in German?

I would recommend rewatching Mad Detective instead.

detective war
fluffset24 July 2022
I dunno cantonese but the meaning of the original title is Detective War which is far better than official english title, Detective VS Sleuth, really? Sleuth? Never heard people use that word.

For this movie, I guess it is too rushing, too many characters, and too chaos. I understand the director dont want to waste any time, he just want us to become breathless all the time watching this movie. Maybe if he give us some drama so we can take our breath. Or maybe I am too old to watch this movie, everything happen so fast...

Not amazing but entertaining enough
andyorchi11 October 2022
I like the original promise to be a continuation for the first film but the mystery whether the lead character has special power or not was part of the charm, this sequel sadly ruined some of that.

Quite a number of surprises although some was a bit lame. Part of the stories felt forced and was shock for the sake out it, a some of the characters could do with a few more acting lessons from the lead actor.

The film really was saved by Lau Ching Wan alone, his portrait is so good it made it almost uncomfortable to watch.

Overall, I found the film entertaining enough and is one of the better hk films in recent years.

From potentially good to ridiculous...

Warning: Spoilers
After Mad Dective, i was expecting this to be good. Sean Lau plays more or less the same character, a detective that could see strange stuff that helps him solve crime (in a sense). At the beginning of the film, everything looks promising. Serial killer on the loose, no one believes the crazy ex-cop, etc. As the story progress, it gets more absurd in a really bad way.

All those crime victim's kins turn braindead cult member with unlimited firepower and bad shooting skills. We get many scenes where people shooting guns like crazy but hit no one, even when the target just stood there or pretend to dodge bullets.

And then there are moles in police force. Fine. But how did a few psychos manage to become police? Dont they do background checks or evaluate their sanity?

Could have been better if they just have a serial killer police acting alone. Whole gang of vengeful youths being brainwashed by the antagonist is just too far fetch. Also... leave out the CG gargoyle.

Are this HK film or Bollywood movie?

Warning: Spoilers
What the heck are the director thinking, Wai Ka Fai, are u making Bollywood movie... The action scenes is completely nuisance, totally doesn't make sense, like simply do for fun. The bullets just simply flying around, only hit the intended person which written in the script. Come on la, this one is a budget HK movie, can make serious abit...Wai Ka Fai, have u watch Fast 9, then u know why the ratings is so low compared to previous... Pls don't simply make movie for fun.

For the script dialogue, it was too fast, i watch it at home one need to rewind so many times only to understand. I understand Cantonese but how abt others which don't understand, how they able to watch in Cinema.

For this movie, i gave extra star for the story as the storyline was good, also extra star for the actors performance orelse I would give 1 star rating... Dissapointed.

Madder Detective
Grethiwha22 July 2022
In 2007, Ka-Fai Wai wrote and co-directed, along with his much more internationally-famous colleague Johnnie To, the absurd crime thriller "Mad Detective", one of my all-time favourite films.

Now, after a 13-year absence from directing, Ka-Fai Wai is back, this time without Johnnie To or To's production company Milky Way, but with a film that seems like a new riff on "Mad Detective", almost a sequel. Ching Lan Wau is back, playing again an insane detective with some apparently supernatural crime-solving abilities lying underneath his madness.

It might sound derivative of the former film, but Detective vs Sleuths has some new tricks up its sleeve, and it honestly feels extremely fresh. Its twisty plot comes together beautifully in the end, the action scenes are some of the best in recent memory, and Ching Lan Wau's performance is bloody brilliant. His antics are crowd-pleasingly hilarious, but it never undermines the film's commitment to its increasingly outrageous narrative.

This film feels like a throw-back, to a level of creativity in Asian cinema that was much more common in the 2000s than what we've seen in the last decade. Certainly, I enjoyed this more than anything Johnnie To has directed since "Mad Detective". That film inspired me to check out more of Johnnie To's work, but now I'm realizing that Ka-Fai Wai deserves equal attention, and I'm very glad he's back after such a long absence.

What exactly was going on here?...
paul_haakonsen13 February 2023
When I stumbled upon the 2022 Hong Kong crime mystery "San Taam Daai Zin" (aka "Detective vs Sleuths"), I had to sit down and watch it.

First of all, it was a Hong Kong movie that I hadn't already seen, and that in itself is more than sufficient to make me watch it. But the movie also has Ching Wan Lau and Charlene Choi on the cast list and they usually tend to make okay movies.

However, the storyline in "San Taam Daai Zin", as written by Lu Jia, Li Jie, Ka-Fai Wai and Yibing Wang, was a swing and a miss for me. The storyline was incredibly cluttered and made for a very confusing viewing. Whatever was going on in the movie just wasn't properly introduced or described to the audience, and as such I felt like I was sitting in darkness trying to make sense of the barrage of events, killings and characters that came rushing at me on the screen.

For a crime mystery, then director Ka-Fai Wai just went a bit overboard in terms of setting out to accomplish way too much with the storyline.

The acting performances in the movie were good, and especially Ching Wan Lau portrayed the disturbed Lee Chun character quite well.

Lots of nice locations throughout the course of the movie, and there was a nice dynamic feel to the movie and the way it was filmed, and that at least helped make the movie somewhat more watchable.

This is not a shining gem in the Hong Kong cinema, and it is definitely not a movie that I would recommend fans of the Hong Kong cinema to rush out and get to watch. In fact, this movie is one that I will never return to watch a second time. There are indeed far better crime mysteries in the Hong Kong cinema, if that particular genre is what you enjoy.

My rating of "San Taam Daai Zin" lands on a very generous four out of ten stars.

Just a piece of junk
smofdd24 September 2022
The movie sucks, and the characters talk and act like fools.

"We don't want to hurt anybody, we're just here for revenge!" What kind of criminals speak like that to calm the crowd? Maybe he should explain well on how he would like to do the revenge, by serving the enemy a massage maybe?

The movie is full of awkward paradox likewise in talks and actions, on every character, which distracts you from the story itself and make you curse.

The movie makers need to know a simple affair, that if you want to tell a detective story, just don't make it a story of idiots.

The rhythm of the story telling is chaotic too.

And the mixture of Beijing accent against mandarin amongst the actors of Hongkong and mainland makes no sense even in nowadays.

What a bull shet
o-3260325 August 2022
Instead of saying this is a detective story, it would rather be described as a creepy nonsense and full of shet talk.

The story writer focus too much on shaping a physical mad detective but completely ignore the basic reality of crime fiction presentations. For example, you would ask me to believe an female police officer would perform her job in crime scene where she have to chase, gun fight and building climbing when she is nearly at a stage of a childbirth? And you expect me to believe that Li Jun could be allowed to engage official crime investigation when he suffer severe mental health problem and risk all citizens and officers in life danger? Such nonsense just appeared all over the screen time and made people literally wonder what's going on with this movie.

Most of the character's motivations are simple, easy-predicated and some even ridiculous, which made people more easily to find that how unbelievable flat the character is. This is the kind of the story that you whish you never heard of. This is so....exhausted to watch. Once again, a new tip for myself: DO get out of it even in the middle of screening, when you find something funny is in the film. Instead of a crime fiction that you can enjoy, its more like those ridiculous Late talk show meme for spoof.

A good and highly recommended HK movie! Buy your tickets now!
ajleong-9872522 July 2022
The storyline is good, with great level of depth as well as twists and turns. It's easy to understand and NOT confusing at all.

The pace is fast and compact! Things happen here and there to keep you going, without a sense of boredom from the beginning to the end!

An appropriate level of action was inserted to enhance the visual excitement, e.g. Gunfights and typical HK car chasing scenes. All these action sequences work well to keep the momentum going. And the clues unfolded one by one to facilitate audiences' understanding towards the cases and reasons for murders! All the main casts performed well to make it a good show!

However, two main pitfalls were picked up as follows: Firstly, the pace is far too fast that it doesn't allow the movie to breathe and the audiences to think through what is going on!

Secondly, each clue is unfolded too quickly! It should allow audiences to process each clue and piece together the puzzles to guess who is the SUSPECT! In fact, this is a psychological thriller, it should thus confuse audiences more, especially Lau Ching Wan's role with his paranoid delusion and multiple-personality disorder, and challenge our ability to unfold the clues. Yet, it's made to look more like an action movie, revealing all things abruptly!

I gave 8/ 10. Overall, it's a great movie! I would highly recommend you to watch it in the cinema, to enjoy the tension and dynamic action, which you will NEVER get from your laptop or home TV. It's definitely worth your ticket money! Take my words! Go, Go, Go..!!

Other reviewers here on IMDB have summed up everything you need to know.
accordchiang23 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
"Detective vs Sleuths" or "Cold Detective" is a movie with big names, like Sean Lau Ching Wan, Raymond Lam Fung, Carman Lee and Charlene Choi. This line-up attracted me to watch this movie.

Unfortunately, this movie is a let-down. It's not unwatchable, but you just can't help but think it could have been better.

The beginning of the movie was not bad. Despite a slow start, the main characters are being introduced to us. As newer victims were killed, we begin to wonder who is the serial killer. Is it the Mad Detective? Is it someone from the police? Or would there be no answer, like Bong Joon-Ho's "Memories of Murder"? The suspense was kept relatively well until the final part.

Sean Lau is an amazing actor. He brought the character of Li Jun, the Mad Detective to life. The split-personality scenes were commendable. Raymond Lam Fung was not bad, but his role could have been more interesting with better writing. Carman Lee was under-utilised, what a waste. Charlene Choi was okay in this movie.

However, even Sean Lau couldn't save this movie's quality. One criteria of a quality movie to me is storyline and originality. The final part of this movie, is simply too rushed and everything is supposed to make sense when the serial killer's identity is revealed. I think some ideas were inspired from TVN's "Mouse", like how serial killers are emotionless psychopaths that go near their victims pretending to care for them.

Apart from the blazing Michael Bay-style, plausibility is also in question. When you have a woman who just gave birth leaping into the waters and coming back to fire a machine gun, wow, that is unacceptable. Besides, you have 2 cops who were of the same syndicate being placed in the same department. I also couldn't get the ending, which is the mirror scene. To me, that is just overzealous.

Good mystery genere.
vismay23526 October 2022
Not a booring movie so it should be watched atleast once who likes thriller or detective story.

Story is good.

Action is ok.

Actors are good.

Character are in good set.

Just a bit too fast for Viewers who do not know Cantonese language.

The main character has fast thinking and speech is also too fast as per the story. So when you rely or have dependency on Subtitles than you loose some scene or either how the story is connected.

If possible than Viewers are advised to watch atleast in their understanding language i.e. Dubbed version.

I am sure even dubbing artist will face challenges in dubbing for the main character.

Had potential but too many flaws
FeastMode17 January 2023
I was very into this movie for a while. The mystery is set up well and takes you on an intricate journey. Some of the action is pretty good and exciting. The lead actor gives a great performance. And I was invested in the main characters.

But the flaws killed it for me. The action becomes tedious and stale while also becoming outrageous and not believable. All the bullets miss. Early on I forgave this a couple times. But it keeps happening, and worse every time. Hundreds of bullets are shot and they keep missing.

Then you have other things like hilariously fake-looking blood spatter. Or other times when people get shot with no blood whatsoever. Or unrealistic CG fire.

I thought this was pretty good for a while and still has a lot of positives, but the negatives brought it way down for me. (1 viewing, 1/16/2023)

Good movie with fast pace
ryanmo-3517823 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The once brilliant detective was being forced to escape, and he knew there were hidden clues under the cases investigated. The pace is fast and the cases were then solved as the offsprings of victims coming out to revenge. When u think the cases are solved, then the big boss appeared, and he leak some clues to make the mad detective into the trap. Very fast pace and reasonable plot. Worthy to watch!
