Cute movie, dancing leaves something to be desired.
jessicaashleybryan8 August 2020
Movie overall is a cute, easy watch. It would be nice if one of these "dance" movies about what high school/college competitions are like were anywhere near accurate. Where are the coaches, where are the actual jazz/lyrical choreographed routines and the months it takes to get them down? Not just some pretend booty shaking to Top 40 music.

You've seen it all before. A typical, Netflix, Teenage-Comedy/Drama with no substance.
elyjahjackson8 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Honestly, the only saving grace this film has is Sabrina Carpenter's performance. Outside of that, everything else falls flat. The comedy. The associaed performances from other actor(s)/actresses. The story. The structure of the narrative is sloppy, rushed and an absolute mess towards the 3rd act. And oh my goodness, the generic-ness of it all. We've seen this before.

"Attractive female lead who doesn't fit in." "Assemble some sort of group to go against a rival group" "Group has their own quirks and don't quite mesh well." "Montage shows them improving and getting the routine down." "Main character falls for attractive male lead." "Uh-oh, something breaks them up as well as the team." "Montage of lead character being down , focusing on other things." "Lead meets back up with someone from the team, they joke, try to bring the others back together." "They try to dance again, it's almost too late, but they manage to make it to the finals of some big competition." "Big final number in 3rd act." "Team wins or don't wins, lead has some big speech." "Ending act of them going their separate ways."

This is honestly the most generic movie I've seen on Netflix, and it just seems like no one cared when making this film. Also, the editing and sound design was awful. Good for a mid-afternoon watch, can't watch it again. Sabrina Carpenter deserves better.

Sabrina Carpenter get the recognition she truly deserved
givary_pradimulia4 December 2020
Although the movie seems short, the film had a little chance to develop it's character, aside of that the movie is fun and heartwarming, Sabrina Carpenter and Jordan Fisher's chemistry is outstanding here

Better than expected

I don't agree with all the mega comment here. I agree it's a very typical movie with predict ending but I liked it. Could have been worse! It made me want to dance even though I can't dance at all and absolutely loved Jordan Fisher! He's superb

It's your basic dance/comedy/romance movie, don't expect too much.
nicolenicole-749018 August 2020
If you're bored on a Sat night and want to watch a cute little movie, put this on. Don't expect too much, the plot isn't great even almost predictable but I won't bash this movie I expect that out of a movie like this. It wasn't too bad, just not great.

Dance Version of Pitch Perfect.
lestatbesa7 August 2020
When I see the Work It trailer to checked if it is worth watching and I found out yes it is. It is fun, motivating and inspiring. The. film is campy, entertaining and for sure it will find a good audience . Sabrina Carpenter casting in this film is a good choice. I like how she portray her role, she is quirky but gorgeous and bit of a nerdy. Kenyan Lonsdale also did a good job as antagonist in this film. However, observed in this film that it has a less plot and little dance. I felt that the film is too short to provide more details on the character/s. But overall, it is alright, it is enjoyable just lack of content.

This movie has been made a THOUSANDS TIMES!
bernarocks8 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Oh oh I have an idea for a really good movie! Let's get a pretty Caucasian average danceractress and give her the LEAD in this college/dancecontest/ find truelove movie AND then to be politically correct let's find some other dancerkids with different ethnicities to do the smaller parts and they all learn how to dance together and then they win the contest in the end. Has it been done a thousand times before? Yes! Now let's do it again.

Exactly what you expect - and just a little more
saranielsen-221644 September 2020
A whole bunch of dance movies have been made on pretty much the same formula. Just look at the Step Up series and you've already got a handful. So if you want to be surprised or blown away, look somewhere else. This is just a dance movie. No more, no less.

In some ways this movie is lacking compared to other movies of the genre - for instance while the dancing in it is not terrible it's not as impressive as most other dance movies I've seen. But I'm no dancer so I can overlook that. It is however not the best in terms of acting. There are some who make it worth it (see next section for details), and some where I was unconvinced to say the least. Unfortunately one of those was the main character, which is unfortunate.

On the plus side, it doesn't take itself as seriously as some dance movies, and in spots it's very funny. Which leads me to the two biggest plusses; Jordan Fisher and Liza Koshy. Liza Koshy brings the biggest laughs, and Jordan Fisher is the heart of the movie. A lot of the acting in the movie is a little stiff and/or superficial, but Jordan Fisher brings it 100%. Without these two this movie might only have gotten 4 or 5 stars from me, but they add a little something so it sneaks up to 6 stars.

Warning: Spoilers
Let's look at the basic setup of this movie: a nerdy white high school girl focused entirely on academics wants to get into an elite college but is denied entrance for a contrived reason. In order to get into the college, she'll need to learn to dance from her best friend, a poc character who encourages her to let loose and live. Along the way, they're opposed by a gay diva (well, his sexuality is never mentioned, but glitter is practically dripping from every limp-wrested gesture), they have to put together a ragtag group of non-dancers who suddenly become amazing dancers over a couple of months, and the main character falls for a college-aged guy with a disability that gives him a tragic backstory (which conveniently disappears whenever the character needs to do something that might be affected by the disability). The main character is also having to hide her now-slipping grades from her mother who desperately wants her to get into the college, but the mother realizes at the end that all that really matters is for her daughter to have fun. What a thrillingly unique tale. It could have almost been really fun. The visual effects in the first few minutes were lively; unfortunately, they were dropped after the intro. If the effects had remained, it might have made up for the lackluster choreography. I know nothing about dance and even I could tell that a few of the scenes just didn't work, especially the rival dance team's performance in the final competition-you're telling me that they're the best team around and *that's* what they do for the competition of the year? Not buying it. And if the love interest's disability had actually, yknow, affected him for more than just a tragic backstory and the first ten minutes of us meeting him, it could have been decent representation. If the diva rival had had any more personality than "diva," it could have avoided falling quite so much into the cliche. But the fact of the matter is that a "diverse" cast...doesn't really serve the cause of representation well if you make all their stories into cliches that revolve entirely around White Girl. But that would require a bit of thought, which Netflix clearly wasn't willing to risk adding.

Sweet with likable characters
abhi-bhatt-7226 August 2020
The movie was nice to watch with quirky high school conversations and well choreographed dance sequences. It was not trying out to be a path breaking movie, but it succeeded in being charming.

Give it a miss if you want to feel something
athunderstorm13 August 2020
I love dance movies, but this one didn't do it for me.

The dancing and the acting was so vacuous, it left me feeling empty inside. You didn't get to know the characters at all, it was just the lead's voice over explaining it to you, like the director really didn't trust you to understand any subtext.

Shallow and generic, but good if you want something cheesy to talk over. :)

Let me make it clear that I LOVE Jordan Fisher.
MIssM198 August 2020
Quinnn during an interview at college, lets it slip that she was part of the "Thunderbirds", an excellent and well-known dance group. The problem is, she can't dance. So, she auditions to be part of it. She fails, of course, so she decides to start her own group.

Let me just say that I LOVE Jordan Fisher. This could have been a movie in which he makes sandwiches while riding a bike and I would have still watched it. Jordan is the reason I decided to watch this, but I was pleasantly surprised. I don't know if Liza Koshy's acting was good but she convinced me, she was the funny one and she made me laugh. I love Keiynan Lonsdale. I'm glad he was here. It was my first time watching Sabrina, I was satisfied with her work.

Look, the movie isn't nothing spectacular, but it's fun to pass the the time. However, I had two big problems: Firstly, Quinn is 17? And Jake was surely over +21 and I don't know how things are in the States and that is illegal in my country and it makes me a bit uncomfortable, she is a minor. Secondly, you cannot learn how to dance THAT well in two months. I know, it's a movie, but still. Let's keep it realistic.

STOP IT! GIVE THEM A CHANCE.

Warning: Spoilers
OK, maybe the movie is too generic.. Yeah they're thousands of movies with the same storyline, like I literally could predict every act and scene of the movie, I already knew Sabrina Carpenter team would win, I knew she would date Jordan Fisher.. But that doesn't mean the movie isn't good. IT'S ABOVE AVERAGE.

A bit Cheesy but quite refreshing
melodyso17 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I thought it's just gonna be another Pitch Perfect like movie. Of course it is still cheesy in some where. Like how they go from 0 to 100 in dancing, how they start dancing out of nowhere when the music plays, how Julia changed (!?), how the two characters suddenly fell in live and how they got a standing applause and won...

It is refreshing regardless. I love how the characters are full of energy, esp Liza and Keiynan. Also like the colors used in the film. Props to them for having quite some Asian representation and using a kpop song. I also find the plot quite creative (how the interview quit the job and turns out to find a job in NYC). I like how it is not as straightforward as I expect it to be. Anyway, it really makes me wanna learn dancing again!!!

People that rated this 10/10 are absolutely delusional. This movie is garbage. Like, literally should be put into a trashcan. What a waste of money and resources.

Not the best, but it's fine
SofiaHedge5 September 2020
Work It isn't the best movie. It is kind of cheesy, yet this film isn't bad, either. It has a few catchy songs and the story is interesting. The dialogue is decent and the acting is good. So this movie is fine, I guess.

Cliche
dalba257 August 2020
This movie is a portfolio of clicheys. An average plot and characters that you've seen in countless other movies of the sort. The script is poor. In my opinion the female lead comes annoying. Often i had to skip, it got boring.

Teenage goof ups
reviewerrana9 August 2020
Description : A girls admission to her college depends on her performance at a dance competition, she forms a group of dancers to take on the best squad in school... and now she JUST needs to learn how to dance.

Review : Movie is super cute. It is somewhat in the lines of Step-Up, but more focused to teenage goof ups and love. The characters in movie has beautiful chemistry. I specially love the selection of songs. Do watch it.

I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to!
Imme-van-Gorp10 October 2023
Okay, so a lot of these dances looked like they came straight off of TikTok, which was... slightly awkward, but I didn't mind it too much cus it still had a very wholesome feel to it.

I also thought the movie was surprisingly funny and plenty entertaining! Jas especially cracked me up multiple times! As a whole, this movie just gave me good vibes <3

I do think Jas was a much better friend to Quinn than the other way around; she was willing to give up her own opportunities to help Quinn, but that wasn't the case the other way around!

Also, Jake was SO FINE! That boy just made me feel all kinds of things, ngl. Him and Quinn were super cute together, and I wish we got more development between them! Their scenes were just so lovely.

Worst Dance Movie
andie-8894115 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I expect dance movies to be cheesy and somewhat predictable, but usually they are redeemable with great dancing and likable characters. I knew that a technicality would get them into the competition before it happened. The dancing isn't exciting or special, and whoever was in charge of costume failed. High waisted jeans are not exactly dance friendly, that would be sweaty af the male antagonist looked like an 80s drag queen but less fabulous. And the acting is so bland. Nothing good about this movie. I gave 2 stars to be nice.
