Being a superstar doesn’t always mean having chart hits.
From massive rock groups and boy bands to iconic vocalists and singer-songwriters, there are countless acts that have managed to inspire generations of entertainers and win over millions of fans without having ever actually notched a No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Over the years, there have been some especially surprising icons who would seem to have a few No. 1s under their belt, but for whatever reason, their songs never managed to wind up sitting at the top spot of the chart.
Not having a No. 1 doesn’t take away from these talented artists’ repertoire, and it’s pretty interesting to see how charts don’t always mean everything when it comes to a musician’s success and impact on the culture.

Missy Elliott celebrated Virginia’s second annual “Missy Elliott Day” in her hometown of Portsmouth by paying $50,000 in past-due rent for 26 families.
According to The Virginian-Pilot, the “Work It” rapper made an appearance at Portsmouth’s Dr. O. In a brief speech, the Grammy-winning artist shared “Instead of it being a celebration of Missy Elliott, you know about me, I wanted to give back and let that be the celebration of Missy Elliott, just to show that I love everybody out here.”
“Just know that P-town is with me no matter where I go,” she added. “I love my city. I love my state.

Lil Wayne has released his latest single, “Kat Food”
Built around an ominous beat sampling “Work It” by Missy Elliott, “Kat Food” is a mainly vehicle for Tunechi to lay down some of the fun, hanky-panky-loving rhymes he’s known for. Wayne first started hyping up the song earlier this week on Instagram, sharing a video of a street team putting up posters for a lost “kat” with instructions to “please text Lil Wayne” if it’s found.
The single follows “Kant Nobody,” Wayne’s most recent release from earlier this year, which featured a posthumous verse from Dmx. Both songs are supposedly part of Weezy’s upcoming record The Carter VI, but no release date or further details have been shared.
Some fans have speculated whether Wayne has teased the release date for the new project, though, utilizing numerology in a way that feels similar to how Swifites decode hints from their beloved,...

Former MTV president Van Toffler had the history books on his mind when he asked Madonna to open the 2003 Video Music Awards. Toffler wanted to honor the VMAs’ nearly two-decade legacy with a callback to its inaugural 1984 edition. A lot had happened since Madonna rolled around in a wedding dress during “Like a Virgin” at that first awards show, but she remained the video era’s flagship star. Toffler hoped a plum spot on the program would motivate the Queen of Pop to outdo herself.

In the hours that directly followed the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 28 in New York City, Madonna was on a plane to Scotland. Earlier in the evening, she had opened the show with a performance of her new single "Hollywood," accompanied by Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Madonna dressed as a groom, while Spears and Aguilera were her brides. Madonna shared a kiss with each pop star in the middle of the performance. And then she went to Scotland.
A few weeks later, Madonna went on Oprah Winfrey's talk show and expressed being surprised by how much attention the kiss had gotten. "I've been oblivious until this moment," she said. "I had no idea that it was going to cause the ruckus that it caused. It was just a friendly kiss." Wearing a houndstooth skirt suit, she claimed, "I don't know why people are making such a big deal about it.

The girls of Flo are bringing back the beauty of early aughts R&b. On Thursday, the British trio — Renée Downer, Stella Quaresma, and Jorja Douglas — released their old-school R&b-infused single “Fly Girl,” featuring an iconic verse from Missy Elliott herself.
“‘Fly Girl’ is all about confidence, good vibes and feeling your best. It’s a lively, feel-good song that still incorporates clever lyrics and fire vocals, if we do say so ourselves,” the group said in a statement. “It’s quite literally a perfect fusion of old-school meets modern-day R&b,...

If you didn’t believe us when we said British R&b trio Flo are a rising act to watch, maybe you’ll take Missy Elliott’s word for it. The iconic rapper-singer guests on the group’s new song “Fly Girl,” inspired by the Supa Dupa Fly artist herself.
Despite its name, “Fly Girl” actually references (and samples) another Elliott song, 2002’s “Work It.” “If you a fly girl, get your nails done, get a pedicure, get your hair did,” Flo sing, before adding their own original flair: “You’re telling me I’m pretty but it’s obvious/ I don’t need a man to tell me where the party is.” Blending old school hip-hop production with R&b vocals, the song instantly becomes an empowering girls night anthem — and that’s before Missy lays down a verse of her own.

Premiering in 2020, “The Circle” is a US Netflix reality TV show based on the popular British series of the same name. Each season a group of strangers enters a colorfully decorated apartment building and engages in chats, games and blockings with each other all while remaining completely anonymous. In “The Circle,” you can choose to play as yourself or as someone entirely different, aka a catfish. Michelle Buteau hosts the fun and flirty program, though she doesn’t get to officially meet the contestants until the finale, when the 100,000 prize is given to the player who the others rated the highest. There are various other versions of the social media game show around the world, including in France and Brazil, but the photo gallery above highlights “The Circle” winners and finalists from the US Netflix seasons.

For this year’s Icons & Influences issue, we asked 10 artists to pay tribute to the women who have shaped their sound, provided an example, and inspired them to break down barriers. Flo Milli has established herself as one of the most exciting new rappers around — and in her fearlessness and adventurous rhymes, she’s a clear heiress of her hero, Missy Elliott.
When I dropped my mixtape, [Missy Elliott] was one of the first people to say she loved me and that I was a dope artist. I’m still learning about myself as an artist.

Jordan Fisher and Talia Ryder are set to lead a new Netflix teen rom-com backed by Ace Entertainment, which produced the wildly successful “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” franchise.
The film, titled “Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between,” is financed and produced by Ace, who acquired the adaptation rights to Jennifer E. Smith’s novel of the same name. Per its logline, the rom-com “centers around Claire (Ryder) and Aidan (Fisher) who after making a pact that they would break up before college, find themselves retracing the steps of their relationship on their last evening as a couple. The epic date leads them to familiar landmarks, unexpected places, and causes them to question whether high school love is meant to last.”
Directed by “The King of Staten Island” producer Michael Lewen in his feature debut, “Hello, Goodbye and Everything in Between” also stars Ayo Edebiri and Nico Hiraga.

The Grammys have a weird relationship with hip-hop. For decades, one of the biggest complaints about the Grammys has been that they constantly relegate hip-hop artists to wins in the rap field, despite them getting general field nominations and oftentimes being the most nominated artists of the year. But the Grammys don’t always snub hip-hop in the general categories. We’ve seen multiple rappers win Best New Artist, including recently Megan Thee Stallion in 2021. Furthermore, it was not too long ago when the first hip-hop song won Record and Song of the Year: Childish Gambino’s “This Is America.” However, when it comes to Album of the Year, the genre only has one win: OutKast’s “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” 18 years ago.
OutKast’s road to the top Grammy honor was, in hindsight, much smoother than you might think given the usual anti-hip-hop bias at the academy. “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below,...

Adopting, and gender-flipping, the ’90s teen comedy “She’s All That” for the TikTok generation, Mark Waters’ Netflix film, “He’s All That,” starring a nascent Addison Rae and Tanner Buchanan, isn’t the unmitigated disaster that the initial trailer portended it to be, but that also doesn’t mean that it is any good. Treading on the hallowed grounds of “The Kissing Booth,” “Work It,” and any number of teen ‘comedies’ that Netflix spits out on a weekly basis, “He’s All That” reimagines the Freddy Prince Jr.

The 2021 VMA nominations are out, and there are a lot of records that could be broken at the 37th edition of these awards. From potential firsts for Cardi B, J Balvin and Drake, to historic repeats by BTS and The Weeknd, let’s see what milestones could be achieved this year.
SEE2021 VMA nominations list: Justin Bieber, Megan Thee Stallion, Olivia Rodrigo among top MTV Video Music Awards nominees BTS
Nominated for Best Pop, BTS’ “Butter” could make them only the third act to win the category back-to-back. The only other artists who have done so are Nsync in 2000 (“Bye Bye Bye”) and 2001 (“Pop”), and Britney Spears in 2008 (“Piece of Me”) and 2009 (“Womanizer”). Additionally, “Butter” would tie BTS with No Doubt and Ariana Grande at two total wins, and they’d be one step closer to matching the biggest category winners: Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, who have won three total.

Netflix romcom queen Christina Milian is finally back with another movie, and Resort to Love (which debuts on July 29) looks like a total delight. Milian stars in the fun flick as Erica, an aspiring pop singer who lands a resident gig at a luxurious island resort in East Africa, not realizing that her ex-fiancé (Jay Pharoah) is planning his wedding there. And though she doesn't appear in the film, there's another big name attached to the film as well: Alicia Keys. Keys served as a producer for Resort to Love, and believe it or not, this isn't the first time she's produced a major film for Netflix.
She might be busy raising her two sons, managing her beauty brand, and releasing chart-topping music, but Keys has a budding career as a film producer as well. The singer extraordinaire's production company, Ak Worldwide, produced the dance comedy Work It starring Sabrina Carpenter.

Pete Davidson and Jason Orley are reuniting for “I Slept with Joey Ramone,” Netflix’s upcoming biopic about the life of the frontman for iconic punk band The Ramones. Netflix announced on Thursday that Orley, who made his directorial debut with 2019’s Davidson-led “Big Time Adolescence,” will direct the upcoming film. The duo serve as writers on the project, which is based on the Mickey Leigh memoir of the same name. The film is a collaboration between Netflix and STXfilms, both of which will develop and produce the biopic.
“When you share a bed with someone — and not just a bed, but a childhood, a family, and a lifetime — you know that person better than anybody else. Mickey Leigh not only collaborated with his big brother’s band – he has irreplaceable memories of and insights into Joey Ramone, having supported him when no one else would and witnessed him overcome...

Pete Davidson is gearing up to portray punk rock pioneer Joey Ramone in the upcoming biopic “I Slept With Joey Ramone” for Netflix and STXfilms.
The announcement comes on the 20th anniversary of Ramone’s death. The biopic will chronicle the life and times of the legendary musician — born Jeffrey Ross Hyman in 1951 — who cofounded the group in Queens, New York in 1974 and went on to change the sound of rock music by stripping it down to Chuck Berry-level basics (but played twice as fast). The Ramones were arguably the first true punk rock band, and not only helped launch the scene around the downtown venue Cbgb but ignited the British punk scene with performances in the U.K. in 1976. The group disbanded in 1996, but their popularity and influence is vast and undeniable.

TVLine has learned that Jordan Fisher (To All the Boys 2, Grease Live!) has been cast in the recurring guest star role of Bart Allen, “the fastest teenager on the planet”… and Barry and Iris’ future son. This marks a departure from DC comics lore, where Bart is the son of Tornado Twin Don Allen (via Meloni Thawne) and thus is WestAllen’s grandkid.
