J.D. Dillard to Helm Black Label Media’s Korean War Epic ‘Devotion’ Starring Glen Powell (Exclusive)

J.D. Dillard has signed on to helm Korean War epic “Devotion,” starring “Top Gun: Maverick” actor Glen Powell, sources tell Variety.
The film, from Black Label Media, is an aerial war epic that tells the harrowing true story of two elite U.S. Navy fighter pilots, Tom Hudner and Jesse L. Brown, during the Korean War. Their heroic sacrifices would ultimately make them the Navy’s most celebrated wingmen.
Powell will star as Hudner, whose life — along with Brown’s — was chronicled in Adam Makos’ book “Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice,” upon which the movie is based. Jake Crane and Jonathan Stewart wrote the screenplay. Blm’s Molly Smith, Rachel Smith, Thad Luckinbill and Trent Luckinbill will produce.
Dillard is best known for his debut feature film “Sleight,” which premiered at Sundance in 2016 and was acquired by WWE Studios and Blumhouse. His second film, “Sweetheart,” starring Kiersey Clemons,...

Radio Silence’s Ready Or Not raises the bar for any horror comedy that dares challenge “Milton Bradley’s Most Dangerous Game.” A bloody vicious, bloody hilarious, and bloody freakin’ outrageous winner. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett roll the dice on matrimonial manhunts, but success needn’t gambler’s odds. Samara Weaving has been destined for Scream Queen glory ever since The Babysitter (then Mayhem), and Ready Or Not completes a trilogy of performances uncontested by measurements of Ellen Ripley or Laurie Strode mojo. Instructions are clear, rules cleverly adhered to and violence of the utmost remorseless brutality – 2019’s summer movie season closes on top scores.
Grace (Samara Weaving) has, or will soon have, any girl’s dream life. She’s about to wed the man of her dreams, Alex (Mark O’Brien), at his family’s extravagant estate. Champagne flows, attendees fawn over the beautiful bride, but night...

Universal Pictures announced Saturday that the studio has canceled its planned release for the upcoming horror film The Hunt, just a day after President Donald Trump seemed to criticize the movie and “liberal Hollywood” in a series of tweets.
In the aftermath of the El Paso and Dayton mass shootings, Universal paused their marketing push for the film, a Most Dangerous Game-inspired thriller about elites killing blue-collar people (“deplorables,” as they’re called in the trailer) for sport, Variety reports. On Saturday, Universal announced the film’s release would be scrapped entirely.

If you thought ladies' weekend at the spa was an experience you couldn't believe, wait until you check out hunting season at The Manor in this first trailer for upcoming action-thriller, The Hunt. The film follows 12 strangers who wake up in a clearing with no clue where they are or how they got there. What they also don't know is that they've been selected for one specific purpose. If you're getting serious Most Dangerous Game vibes, you're not far off.
Written by Lost cocreator Damon Lindelof with The Leftovers collaborator Nick Cuse, The Hunt is about more than just a really fancy place where people go to hunt other people - though that is definitely a major point of the plot. The film follows a group of globalist elites who have gathered at the Manor for the very first time. Their hunting plans hits a major bump when one of the people being hunted,...

“Booksmart” director/writer duo Olivia Wilde and Katie Silberman will team up again for a comedy at Universal Pictures. The studio recently won rights to the project in a heated bidding war between six studios, according to Deadline. Universal nabbed the untitled holiday comedy based on an original pitch from Wilde and Silberman, with Wilde attached to direct and Silberman (co-writer on “Booksmart”) slated to write the screenplay. Both women will produce.
Released in late May, “Booksmart” earned rave reviews from critics and has earned over $22 million in box office returns thus far. The raunchy teen girl comedy stars Beanie Feldstein (“Lady Bird”) and Kaitlyn Dever (“Justified”) as strait-laced best friends who go to great lengths to finally let loose on their last night of high school.

Wilde is attached to direct, and Silberman, who co-wrote Booksmart, will write the script. The two of them will produce.
It is refreshing to see this level of studio enthusiasm generated after an inspiring directorial debut by the multi-hyphenate Wilde came out of SXSW to become one of the most critically acclaimed films of the young year. Booksmart has been included on most of the “best of the year so far” film lists. Backed by Annapurna and Gloria Sanchez and released by United Artists, it has grossed over $22 million so far.

When Jacob Aaron Estes’ latest film — and his first since the unmitigated disaster that was the Tobey Maguire-starring “The Details,” from 2011 — debuted at Sundance this past January, it was under the slightly video-game-esque title “Relive,” a wink at the unexpected nature of its time-traveling drama. Now the film, starring David Oyelowo and “Wrinkle in Time” breakout Storm Reid, has a new title and a chilling first trailer to help sell it.
The film is now known as “Don’t Let Go,” which speaks to another facet of its drama, a canny riff on time travel tropes. Per the film’s official synopsis, it follows “detective Jack Radcliff (Oyelowo) [who] gets a shocking phone call from his recently-murdered niece Ashley (Reid). Working together across time, they race to solve her murder before it can happen.” The film also stars Mykelti Williamson, Brian Tyree Henry, Shinelle Azoroh, Byron Mann, April Grace, and Alfred Molina.
