Love and Shackles - Review of "Hooked on You"

Warning: Spoilers
Law Wing-Cheong's followed Johnnie To Kei-Fung for many years. In 2006, he finally acted as a director alone, and directed the "2 Become 1" (2006) starring Miriam Yeung Chin-Wah and Richie Jen Hsien-Chi. In a masculine film produced and directed by Johnnie To, Law Wing-Cheong opened up a belt. There's a light comedy line in the period when Johnnie To and Wai Ka-Fai cooperated. This time, Law Wing-Cheong cooperated with Miriam Yeung again, and partnered with her good friend Eason Chan Yick-Shun, with the street market as the background, he described a woman's experience in the ten years around the age of 30. The film is intended to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Hong Kong's return to the motherland. Some news events in this ten years have been added to the plot to reminisce the past with the audience.

Miu played by Miriam Yeung, wants to pay off her father's debt before she turns 30, leave the market, and marry a man worth marrying. When her father passed away at the age of 30, she finally left the market and set out to pursue her ideal, but she was emotionally lost and career and love could not have the best of both worlds. The film borrows Miu's ten years of experience, intentionally or unintentionally, as a metaphor for the changes in Hong Kong in this ten years and the psychological changes of Hong Kong people. When Miu faced the demolition of the market, she felt sad, the so-called fifty years unchanged at that time was not as simple as everyone imagined. Just as Miu was determined to break away from the market she thought was the shackles of her life, but the love in her heart was in the shackles, Eason Chan who played the Fishman, at the end of the film Miu expressed her monologue that it would take ten years to understand the word "Miss".

This time, Miriam Yeung put away her past funny qualities and seriously performed this woman around the age of 30 without taking off her unique performance style. This is obviously a new beginning for her future acting career. In addition, Eason Chan played the rough and righteousness of Fishman very flatteringly. Stanley Fung Sui-Fan and David Lo who have been absent from the screen for many years, as well as Huang Bo and Jolie Chan Yat-Suen, all performed well. It's a pity that several Mainland China actors need dubbing, which is a bit flawed in reality.
