Bumfights! I just finished watching a documentary on the making of, selling of and effects of the underground film "Bumfights". For those of you who haven't seen it, it's a film that was created by some teenagers who go around with promises of food, booze and cash in the hopes of getting a few people to degrade and harm themselves and others.
Now, I have mixed feelings about the whole ordeal. Firstly, I'm not against filming someone hurting themselves because they simply got drunk or refuse to be anything other than drunk, I'll even giggle madly at watching two drunk guys beat each other until they can no longer stand, but, when the people are homeless the rules are different.
To us, a hot meal is as much as a guarantee as the air we breathe or the sun shining, for homeless, it's not the same and each meal is a gift, however few and far between they may be. After eating from a dumpster for half eaten, slimy, moldy and rancid food that has been sitting under a dirty used diaper or tampon for a week, a hot clean meal could easily be used to entice them to do ANYTHING. I think it's grossly disturbing as well as disgusting that these, well to do kids took advantage of these people's carnal needs, their survival waved in front of them, given to them only after they pull their own teeth or beat each other in the face.
But on the other hand .
On the other hand, there were some aspects of the film that were simply blown out of proportion such as "well they were drunks" as an excuse and my absolute favourite "They're like children and need to be looked after". I don't see it like that, these people who were hurting themselves for beer as opposed to food, are different. They're drunks, alcoholics, boozers and sots; they're grown men who willingly do this for more booze who would, in all likelihood do it anyway after they were drunk. It's the same thing, in my book, if you were to hold a needle filled with H out for a junkie who is Jonesing and say "jerk me off and I'll give you this", of course they do it, but then turn around and sue you for rape or some other such nonsense. They willingly defiled and humiliated themselves because they simply lacked willpower, and now that they're out of money and sober, they feel as if they were 'victimized'.
The Bum hunter These people should have went to prison on a mountain of charges, such as assault, wrongful imprisonment, copyright infringement, contributing to the delinquency of a minor (provided someone under 18 was there, and if there were, a count for each one present), acts of terrorism, abuse of the elderly, fined for lack of filming permit(s) and that's just to name a few The ONLY reason these people aren't in prison somewhere being turned out like the little bitches they are, is because they preyed on people who would do anything for food or money for food and offered such to not go to the cops or sue If it were up to me, I would take ALL proceeds made from these films to set up a few homeless shelters that house, train them, counsel them and make them productive members of society not torture them and make millions off of their pain, suffering, fear and humiliation.
As for those of us who watch the tapes, go out and buy them, giggle and show our friends we aren't in the clear either. We need to look at ourselves and find out why we no longer care about our fellow man, we don't care if someone is raped, burned, hung, defiled, humiliated, shot, cut and killed as long as it isn't us or someone we care about directly. This is what is wrong with the world today, we don't care. Lots of 'reasons' and 'explanations' can be thrown out there as to why we don't such as the media has desensitized us, dehumanized us or caused us to be skittish and mind our own business and screw everyone else, but it's ultimately up to us as individuals to make up our minds to treat every single person we encounter with respect, love and courteousness and protect the weak when it is time to do so, help those who need help when we can and when we're able to because it's the right thing to do, not because it'll get you recognition or because it will get you somewhere, but because it's the right thing to do.
I look at every single child as MY child, I'll take care of them, I'll help them, I'll play with them as if they were my own, why? Because they see us as their family; everything we do teaches them, what should we teach a child? Should we teach them to help people by doing so ourselves as often as possible, or should we show them the proper way to coax someone into pulling out their own teeth for food? Personally I'd rather see my children watch me change a tire for the elderly than see me kicking someone in the head because I thought it would be fun.
