Plot holes distract from actual plot... Of which there is barely any.
hollyatether30 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I liked the concept of this film but the execution was laughable. The inaccuracies in this movie were also so distracting from the plot, and they were plentiful:

If she's hired by an agency to be a carer, she wouldn't receive her salary packet from the person she's caring for!

The police would NOT release the body from a suspicious death, with an ongoing investigation, to a carer so she can honour his wishes of being cremated, SURELY they would have carried out an autopsy first to determine the cause of death.

The manager at the agency would NOT just come around running his mouth accusing his ex-employee of gross misconduct and then illegally enter the property at night to further investigate?? Like, what??

And the reveal at the very end of the film. I'm sorry, that's the first time she turned on the sprinklers in four months? Nah. And it also hadn't rained in that time? Nah. If he was so complacent in hiding those diamonds (couldn't even bury them properly) they would have revealed themselves sooner.

There were plenty more but I'm not going to waste anymore time on this sorry excuse for a film.

It's a movie about two dumb people who can't seem to figure out how to make a single good decision throughout the entire film.

Ending is so annoying
Corveettee3 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I found the beginning of this movie very catchy and is interesting. However the ending was just ridiculous. How could she keep the house at the end? It was not his will. She should have respected this.. Oh the things people do for money! And although her husband told the place of diamonds even as audience we got It, she say she doesn't have a clue and she couldn't really see? She wents on living on a house with 6 deaths, including his husband like nothing happened. We didnt even learn what happened in the restaurant. This movie is just a waste of time.

This movie was a dangerous lie
wheredidmylifego1 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
-Best actor in this movie was the pigeon! Please see his work between 1:19:00-1:20:00...if it wasn't for this pigeon I wouldn't have finished the movie. -Script was below par. There was no connection between the diner and Leonard, yet the movie made it seem like there was because the detective was sus over the smallest details -Unnecessary characters who somehow had everything to do with the plot -Camila Mendes' character "Katie" was not effectively portrayed in the scene where her husband died. While her crying was expected to be below basic, it was not expected to be THIS poor. -This movie would have only been 40 minute long if "Katie" was not indecisive and didn't repeat questions that were already answered. Camila's character also continuously dodged questions like "where are the diamonds" as if those gun shots damaged her eardrums. I know the writers did it for suspense, but it did not work out well. -Diamonds appeared as if you were mining in minecraft when the sprinklers hit them. Poor edit! -Overall, Dangerous Lies would have been good if you threw away the cast and script!

Watch And See For Yourself
newmountainmusic2 May 2020
I'm not sure what people expect anymore? It's like nothing is good enough. Was this a masterpiece that I will watch over and over? No. Was it a good way to kill an hour and a half? Yes.

The movie was enjoyable enough. Not everything has to be blockbuster material to be good. And those criticizing the acting? I'm not sure what movie you watched, but the acting was just fine.

Was the story super original? Nah. Who care? It's an escape from reality for an hour and half. People need to chill. I'm starting to think that a lot of the reviews on here are just from bitter people who don't like anything.

Check it out and decide for yourself. You can always turn it off if it doesn't grab you in the first 20-30 minutes.

WHAT!!??

Warning: Spoilers
I, honestly, do not know what just happened. This movie is not bad if you can buy into the premise that two people who are not psychopaths can behave in a psychopathic manner out of the blue. Then sure, very nice film. First of all, no normal human being is going to react to FINDING A BODY IN A HOUSE THEY JUST INHERITED OUT OF THE BLUE so nonchalantly. Found body in house? Chill in house and casually discuss this situation. Someone broke into house and hit your husband across the nuggin'? Chill in house and casually discuss this situation. Creepy realtor keeps loitering around? Chill in house and take no precautions. Your husband is being a weirdo and disposing of bodies? wait for detective, who doesn't know of the aforementioned body disposal, to tell you something shady is going on. You inherit a huge house and expect it not to look suspicious to the police or to anyone? I have so many questions. I genuinely don't understand the character development in this film. AND THEN, LETS ADD DIAMONDS to the mix. Don't get me started about the "twist" end. Just don't watch this movie. I am sad.

If chatting with your good-for-nothing husband calmly for minutes after a lifeless body was found in the attic sounds logical, then go ahead and watch.

More an afternoon film
Saiph904 May 2020
Netflix are churning out content with various degrees of success, some absolute stinkers and some like this which is not a car crash or likely to be remember beyond turning the tv off with the remote. Story is ok although some of their choices have you thinking "really" but it was watchable probably for Camila Mendes, as my wife said "more of an afternoon film"

An entertaining disaster
iamkeysersoze-1322830 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Dangerous Lies is one of the most entertaining disasters of the year so far. It's completely predictable and void of any originality. However it's a film I had a lot of fun with in a "so bad it's good way"

Whilst the writing isn't that great. It's good to see Camila Mendes not be in something which was written by writers who take too much drugs. Camila Mendes wasn't that great. She proves herself to be decent but nothing more. Everyone else is just meh in the film.

The film started fairly well but then it becomes very generic and by the third act it's kind of laughably bad. There were moments were I thought it wasn't that bad. The mystery is there but it just feels like a 90s B-Movie thriller.

Overall it's never boring, it's just a carbon copy of other movies. It's enjoyable but the more you look into it the more you are gonna hate.

I wanted this to be at least enjoyable
Vaki123430 April 2020
This is one of these films you really wonder how and why they were made. Generic boring "thriller" with zero thrills, full of plot holes and things happen with no meaning, just to happen.

Predictable and poorly acted "teen-thriller" - intoscreens.com
eelen-seth30 April 2020
A few months after the tragic events at the diner Katie Franklin (Camila Mendes - Riverdale) worked at, she finds a job as a caretaker to a wealthy elderly man in his rather large, empty Chicago estate. The two grow close, but when he unexpectedly passes away and names Katie as his sole heir, she and her husband Adam (Jessie T. Usher - The Boys) are pulled into a complex web of lies, deception, and murder. If she's going to survive, Katie will have to question everyone's motives - even the people she loves.

Dangerous Lies' main plot sounds intriguing, but fails on multiple levels. Especially because the film just feels so "been there done that". It's not only incredibly predictable, it also just lacks anything remarkably interesting. It all starts with the plucked-out-of-Riverdale looking diner, drizzled in pink neon lights, where a robbery goes wrong. Not only does it all look like your ordinary pop music video, it also sounds like it, with songs playing every now and then during the film. After a four month time jump, our happily married couple is still worrying about their finances and the most mysterious people start entering their new lives.

Mendes might be a fan favourite as the iconic Veronia Lodge in Riverdale, but clearly lacks the skills and maturity to pull off the emotion that is necessary to lift David Golden's feeble script to another level and save herself out of this train wreck. Golden, who has written about ten Christmas films for Hallmark, misses the mark and stacks cliché after cliché, until the formulaic and unsatisfying ending feels like you've been given a lump of coal. Together with director Michael M. Scott, both are clearly in over their heads and feel a bit lost when it comes to leveling up to a genre that's rather new to them.

If it wasn't for Rizzoli & Isles-star Sasha Alexander's professional and convincing work playing detective Chesler, the supporting cast consisting of former heartthrob Cam Gigandet (The Magnificent Seven) and Jamie Chung (The Gifted) would've been a complete waste of energy and anyone's time.

When trying to find some positives in a film of this kind, you go looking for the smallest things. Unfortunately the weak score and displeasing colour grading doesn't help with setting the mood in what could've been a decent thriller. The only pleasant technical aspect of the film is the charming house most of the story takes place in. Hardwood floors, an authentic old stained glass skylight and spacious rooms make this film a wee bit more pleasant to look at. Not quite sure if this was an actual location or a set build for the film, but what did get annoying was the amount of times the city of Chicago had to be mentioned, as if it was some sort of bizarre product placement by the bureau of tourism.

Despite all of its weaknesses, Dangerous Lies isn't boring. It's one of those Netflix films that looks appealing to the masses, and it also helps to have one of your own stars playing the lead in what will for sure keep the die hard Riverdale-fans out there entertained during this worldwide lockdown. As a '90s thriller this might've worked, but even for the streaming giant this low budget "teen-thriller" is unacceptable.

I like it!!
Guanche488 May 2020
I found this movie very entertaining. Well acted, but also predictable at some point, a shame. Without the predictable staff, it could have been a much better movie.

The decisions of the girl I found very realistic, put yourself in her position. !!

Netflix #1 Trending movie... BS!
jakebrann3 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I don't believe for a minute that this is the #1 movie on Netflix! Funny how they list whatever they want us to watch in their list of top 10 trending movies!

This is maybe one of the worst movies I have ever seen and I'm not even sure I can finish it. The acting is terrible, the couple has no chemistry and it's just cringe to watch them kiss. So an old man leaves you his home and all his possessions. In that home you find a chest full of cash that isn't even $100k and they're trying to figure out how to launder it?! Really?! This couple behaves nothing like any normal person would that just inherited a large house and a lot of money. They caused all of the problems for themselves. This was an awful movie that you will spend the whole time saying "who would do that" and "oh come on"... Just a terrible movie that you should avoid watching at all costs! Such an irritating movie.

I don't like when antagonists explains themselves.

I don't like when people show up at the last minute to save the day.

That said, the movie is decent. The main actress and her husband are great characters, and the movie is brief enough.

It's pretty dangerous that there is no mystery here.
pranayjalvi30 April 2020
"Dangerous Lies" is about as generic a title for a mystery movie, but this Netflix original movie truly is none of a thriller, with a tantalizing setup and a non indulging series of events leaving the viewers to guess the end. The ending feels flat and there is nothing to be intrigued of. It sounded brilliant on paper and in the trailer, but when it came to viewing, it felt that this movie could have been much better just like it's cast.

Another Netflix original movie which disappoints and falls flat from being a genuine mystery thriller.

My Rating : 2/5

Not bad, but could have been better .
sb-785535 May 2020
When I saw the trailers of this movie, I had some decent expectations of this movie to be a nice thriller . And to say that, these expectations were not met would be a lie . I did enjoy the movie . Only thing is that, I felt that the ending was hurried ; almost like the writer was told that his/ her deadline has been pushed by 3 months and he/ she has to end the story within 2 days . I liked the work of Camila Mendes and would like to see her in more movies, albeit better story and plot . That's all folks !

Bad script, bad acting. Lifetime has better thrillers than this
lilyroseroxanne30 April 2020
I was quite excited about this movie when I saw the trailer as it reminded me of Knives Out. However, a couple days before release, Netflix dropped a promo video with Looper that should've been my first big warning sign, as it mentioned that the director and writer have only done Hallmark movies. Dangerous Lies isn't anywhere near the comedy and genius of Rian Johnson's Knives Out, nor is its cast anywhere near is stacked as the former was with scenery-chewing talent. Think soapy thriller with plot "twists" you can predict 20 minutes in and you'll be much more on the nose. The plot and script were just bad, and I say that as someone who really enjoys Lifetime thrillers and Riverdale as their guilty pleasure.

The cast was mediocre to passable. None of them stood out to me. At best their acting could be called serviceable, but none of them showed the skill necessary to elevate the script from the melodrama and cliches that bogged it down. I found Mendes to be one-note and flat, and her range to be fairly limited. Jesse T. Usher has done incredible work in The Boys and is a real up and coming actor, but even he was just okay here. Strangely, veteran actor Elliot Gould is the weakest link here.
