SEASON 2
The concept of this show is nice, but the participants should be someone you just don't associate with doing comedy on stage, and of course their jokes should be funny, otherwise what's the point. Analyzing on the basis of those parameters, I can easily say that Faye D'Souza was the most unexpected guest and her episode was the funniest. Faye is known for no nonsense, extremely serious journalism, so it was quite a pleasant surprise to see her on a stage doing stand-up comedy. Normally, one would expect only the stand-up bit of the show to be somewhat funny, but in this episode even the portion where Atul Khatri and Sapan Verma were interacting with her was quite enjoyable to watch, especially the bit where Faye teaches them the art of reading prime time news. This was a well written episode.
Unfortunately, other episodes couldn't really match up to the Faye D'Souza episode, the weakest being the one with Raftaar. Samay Raina is a very funny comedian, and also is a good friend of Raftaar, but none of that helped in putting together a good episode. Raftaar was just not funny on the stage, and also the material he was given was quite below par. Surprisingly, even Samay Raina's personal stand-up bit wasn't quite funny. It felt like nobody was inspired to be a part of this. Samay Raina and the writers probably thought, why should we waste our good stuff on this show. I can't blame a stand-up comedian if he/she wants to save their best material for their own shows, but what's the point of making a comedy show that has no comedy in it at all ?
I don't see the point of having Karan Johar and Chetan Bhagat on a show like this. Both are writers and and public speakers, and are known for their sense of humour. How was this exercise different for them, especially Karan Johar who hosts almost every single award function and is used to cracking jokes in front of thousands of people ? Also, why did they even need a mentor or a team of writers ? When you get celebrities like these, then it's quite obvious that their enthusiasm won't be the same as someone like Faye D'Souza. Their stand-up bit was a mix of hit and miss, with Chetan Bhagat turning it into a serious TED talk towards the end, perhaps to make up for the lack of humour in his stand-up bit. It's safe to say that Karan Johar and Chetan Bhagat are funnier in their own professions.
Sunny Leone was another interesting choice, because stand-up comedy is a very different job compared to what she is known for. Watching her deliver those lines, you could sense that she wasn't used to doing this and it was all a bit uncomfortable for her, but all that only added to the entertainment. Sunny's set was well written and had some genuinely funny punchlines.
While going into this show, I didn't really have huge expectations from it, but I find it quite amazing that a show with such below par writing got approved. I hope Sapan Verma takes feedback from the viewers before making the next season.
