Rights for Witches!
jeroduptown14 July 2021
More of a political tale than a horror one, this film's set in a time where witches are "discriminated against" for using their powers. But one girl and her mom are in to help them.

try but lack a decent script and immersive scenes.
surfisfun5 November 2021
Probably too many budget restrictions.

Scenes feels too slow .

I wanted to like it better.

It is watchable, and maybe a female audience will enjoy it better then the male ones?

Cheers.

wasted potential
tony-146-69562622 March 2022
The actors were pretty good. They were believable and are the best part of this movie.

The music is too dramatic. Over the top, which takes away from the scenes instead of adding to them.

The overall feel of the movie is like a twilight zone episode. Slow buildup with a somewhat unexpected ending. At 1 hour and 37 minutes it is too much time for too little material.

It is almost an ok movie. Almost interesting. Like the smell of a great dinner cooking that when served disappoints. Worse because if it had been cooked right it would have been great.

The type of movie you stream while doing boring work to help pass the time.

A 4 is being generous.

It's just too slow
elliotjeory19 November 2021
The trailer looked promising however I gave up after about 45 minutes. I liked the premise of the film, however there is no explanation of how a death squad was hunting the witches and how they are relevant in modern society.

The pacing was also terribly slow, which didn't help at all.

Overall had potential but poorly executed.

Slow paced and without much magic...
paul_haakonsen4 August 2021
When I sat down to watch the 2021 movie "Witch Hunt", I must admit that I was expecting more in the horror department from writer and director Elle Callahan. But instead I found myself in for a political horror of sorts.

The storyline told in "Witch Hunt" definitely was one that failed to entertain me in a memorable way. Sure, the movie was watchable, but I found the storyline to be rather uneventful and slow paced. There was just simply too little happening of any worth throughout the course of the movie, so I wasn't particularly entertained.

And while the movie does have a good cast ensemble, with the likes of Elizabeth Mitchell and Lulu Antariksa on the cast list, then the storyline was just an anchor around their ankles, holding them back.

There is a little bit of CGI involved in the movie, as there is a dash of witchcraft actually to be seen in the movie. Sure, the effects were good, but I must admit for a movie that was based on witchcraft, then I was expecting more in the magic department. But I guess that the movie's title was referring more to the thing when people run a campaign against someone because of their opinions, views or beliefs, and not really actual magical witchcraft.

Regardless, then "Witch Hunt" was a movie that fell short of providing me with wholehearted entertainment. And as such, then my rating of writer and director Elle Callahan's 2021 movie lands on a mere three out of ten stars.

Not much of a with hunt
floreanicoleta-6347011 December 2021
I love to watch a good witch and this wasn't one. The idea behind the movie was alright but it wasn't presented properly.

The story had some holes in it and it didn't make sense some times... I've been left wondering why on so many thing shown in the movie.

Entertaining!
circycle4 October 2021
Why are people dogging this movie? It has a fully fleshed-out concept with good character development and acting. The main actor explores a lot of emotions as she comes of age and faces danger and the law. So it ties some current events as themes in its fantasy story.... So what!

The movie has multiple plot lines and depth. They used their budget well and the pacing is solid. The effects are cool and the witchiness is mysterious and frowned upon by the scared normals. It's kind of like the early X-Men movies in this regard.

I watch all types of movies (mostly horror and drama) and this kept my interest. It also has a cool old American style with all the furniture and cars. People have this stuff and smartphones, MacBooks, etc.

I was entertained by this.

Pointless!
roxmewild22 December 2021
The most dramatic part of this whole movie was the music! Infact the music was dramatic even when there was nothing happening! Which was 90% of the time!

The so called story had zero depth to it and did not progress into anything it was blander than vanilla!

I don't know about the title as the only Hunt I was on was for an actual story!

Lame is my choice of word to describe this movie!

Stupid people hate it because "Politics" but it ain't bad.
alexking477731 July 2021
I am really tired of any yahoo coming into movies and just throwing 1's and 2's out because they can't get past a message they may not agree with. For one movies are meant to challenge your views and also speak about matters through art. As any art does.

Also! Horror has ALWAYS had its political messages you insanely vapid whiners. If you don't like horror then go watch an action film. There are loads of them.

First off the acting is not as bad as people are saying. Does it have a message that mirrors today. Yeah it does and it does a pretty damn good job of mirroring it. Which probably makes these 1 star rater madder than hell. Too bad. Find a safe space Jethro.

I think this will definitely resonate with people who aren't into period pieces. As I'm not much for them. This modern take is a bit on the feminine empowerment side. So if the thought of woman being strong bothers you. Go watch Steven Segal. But to be fair. Though it wasn't for me directly I still thought it was a thoughtful and sweet way to tell a story. Plus it's shot well and has a lot of moving parts in the film than just a straight message about current politics. It has like 3 stories or 3 sub genres woven together. Definitely a bit more unique than I thought it was gonna be.

Much more of an indie film exceeding it's financial restraints by story and ideas alone. Which I admire. I'd say about 6 & 1/2 to 7 for me. I didn't feel I wasted my time at all.

Bad on SO many levels
cheekymonkey674 December 2022
This movie tried to be poignant but was FAR too poorly made to reach that. The story was bad, the acting mediocre, and the director/writer seemed to be using the story of Anne Frank but lacked the story telling and directing skills to pull it off in a believable manner. I do not care about the lack of action or use of witchcraft. This story was just not told well. It was far too predictable. The protagonist was not played well. I found myself laughing at a few moments of this film simply because it did not stay true to its own story. It rambled and contradicted itself. I am surprised a studio thought this was something to invest in. It may have touched a chord with a few but all it touched was my desire to have the time back.

Another great film with low rating
PaxD7529 December 2021
This is a story about a girl's self-discovery in a world where witches are common place. It's a drama-driven piece that reminds me of the mutant struggle that takes place in the world of the X-men except this is done in a more intimate manner.

There are no flashy super-powered beings that are well-organized and fighting back. The production team did an excellent job of making this film feel real-world. There is true evil in the name of 'the law', true prejudices instilled into the population, true fear and that sense of helplessness that comes from being victimized by your own country.

The acting throughout the film was superb. The storyline draws you in and keeps you engaged as a good drama does. There are also some minor scares that are incorporated nicely into the story.

A shame that such a well-written film is received so poorly here (4.5 rating, 29dec2021, 618 votes).

Which witch watch which watch?
Kitahito21 June 2022
I'm well aware it's an outlandish suggestion, but can you maybe... I don't know... don't use your witch powers? Helps you blend in, and all. Just an idea. Because if you can't, and you are an unpredictable threat to everyone around you, maybe the government's reaction that seems unreasonable at first is in fact justified? Just sayin'

Of course, you can always find more humane solutions than... well, burning people alive at a metal stake, maybe you should let them leave the country when they trying to cross the salt protected border (I know, I know, crazy idea, right?), or utilize their very very usefull skills in some way. For example, I'd assume the army could use soldiers who can walk through walls, teleport, destroy buildings or move objects with their minds, reverse gravity, create optical illusions, disable electric devices...etc, but yeah, burn them. And then take their driving licences, just to be sure. That's equally important.

What a bunch of nonsense...

Very disappointing
barmybag17 November 2021
Just as it got to the good bit, it finished. It states 'witch trials come to love in modern day America' in the blurb on Amazon but other than the opening scene and dunking about half way through there was no trials. I've seen portrayals of witch trials in Vampire Diaries, Sleepy Hollow and such like programmes.

If you've got a spare 1hr 37mins then stick it on but I'm pretty sure that you'd be able to find something better to watch.

Plot, acting and script is Soooo Bad!

I think the Producers of this Turkey gave it a 6.2 rating to recoup their losses.

I wasn't bewitched by this but it was OK
Stevieboy66621 October 2022
Witch Hunt is set in an alternative modern day USA in which witches are hunted, tried and executed. A teenage girl and her mother in Southern California help accused women find safety but their lives change for good when the daughter is charged with being a witch. This is an interesting idea and makes a change to the slew of modern zombie, vampire and slasher movies, sadly the reason for this draconian and horrific state of affairs is not explained. This is a fairly mild horror movie, perhaps supernatural fantasy or thriller would best describe it. I would say that the target audience is teenage girls and female twenty somethings but as a middle aged man I found this to be a reasonable time filler. The acting is OK but the CGI effects look quite cheap, there are some incredibly generous reviews on here, take these with a pinch of salt! One of the most memorable scenes has girls being ducked by witch finders in a school swimming pool, fair play to the makers to come up with that!

Allegory
togocat-805464 November 2022
How people don't know this is an allegory is beyond me. It practically states it with the dictionary definition at the beginning. "Witchhunt" meaning hunting witches is barely shown. The screen lingers on the second definition about persecution. While I didn't really tie it to LGBT, the witch burned at the start is wearing blue, so it's clearly a political statement. Yes, it could be better, but most movies could. Be glad you still have the right to see movies like this. McCarthyism could return after the next election.

As another reviewer said, most horror movies have a statement. Anyone watching a Peele movie shows that. The message is often more important then the medium.

Wow What a disappointment
roanelisa6 July 2021
I was looking forward to this movie. Couldn't believe how horrible it was. Seems this year the trailers of movies make the movie look like it's going to be good but ends up juts being a complete fail of a movie. Sad could have been good.

Another one getting bad reviews and it's doesn't deserve that.
brandonbray-3569815 September 2021
I really enjoyed this movie. Don't trust the haters. Person complained it got a 6.2 rating.....well now its like 4 something. But I like to mess with the people that supposedly have good taste in movies, but never offer anything they consider better. So I'll bump my score from 8 to 10 . Just to bug them a d make them think I'm being paid or I'm a bot. When I'm not either. So much better than that 2nd crap craft movie. Said it's got horrible cast. Elisabeth Mitchell is far from horrible sir. Ashley bell is also great. Loved her in the last exorcism. Just say youdont like the movie. Don't be surprised people give it good ratings and actually liked. Not everyone watches or enjoys the same thing.

Decent movie. It wasn't as bad as folks say.
jobitaphillips26 December 2021
Different type of movie. Reminds me of the basic plot of X-men. It wasn't great or bad. Just meh. I wish that the subject was fleshed out more. Pacing seemed slow and instead of dragging out scene they could have added more interesting content. Ending was a tad corny. All in all it's worth watching while doing something else.

Avoid
tanis_ivy16 October 2021
Its movies like this that make me wonder how somethings get approved and some don't. I'm sure the writer/director meant well, you can get a gist of the political undertones it tries to convey. But it never really gets any job done. Its neither a good allegory or witch movie. Never tense, nor happy. It just drones along. Anytime you expect some sort of explanation, you're left empty save for a few miss-and-you'll-be-lost lines near the end. Fresh of watching this, the only thing magic was how it made 30-minutes feel like an hour. At best this should have been a concept for someone to pick up and fleshed out.

None of the faults should be laid of the actors/resses or crew, they all did their jobs, and did it to the best of their ability.

Avoid. Honestly, I see movies as art at 24-frames-per-second, and try not to dismiss another person's vision because art is subjective. This was terrible, even for my low standards.

If the writer sees my comment, I think you should work on this idea! There is something here, the trailer brought me too it, the initial idea is promising. Flesh out the world and story. A modern day world with witches is a good pitch.

Twitch Hunt
108YearsOld6 July 2021
Tired of another shallow political satire, production is fine but nothing really happens after the witch trafficking-execution scene early in the movie, one star knocked off for not utilizing the hot mom played by Elizabeth Mitchell.

Why are we still making movies like this in 2021?
yproks4 July 2021
Half decent up until Christian Camargo's character makes his appearance, then it takes an astronomical nose dive.

This jeromebasque's review though had me in stitches though haha.

Wtf was that ending? I want the time back I spent watching it. Nothing exciting happened! At all. It's a dystopian movie. Nothing more or less, but one of the worst scripts and a terrible budget.

WHERE WAS MAGNETO ?!?!?!?!?
godinamachine21 March 2022
HEY EVERYBODY ITS ME (4) and today we review .........."dragula the extended cut" THE MOVIE

burn through witches and dig through the ditches .....oh rob zombie .....you silly homeless man ...

so here we have a prime example of a well written story driven film that also offers up decent FX that are not so over whelmingly try hard that they take away from the movie ........ USUALLY to find a decently balanced flick these days is hard .........ive seen many others say this film LACKS a good story , personally ive never seen a witch story tackled like this before ........so ... how can you say bad story when its actually something different and done in a sense of confronting the idea of hiding "criminal" people that are just trying to live like "normal" people as the yare getting killed and "deported" out of the US etc ...its kind of a story about more than "witches" they were pushing other points in the film BUT using the metaphor of "witches" the make points .........SO cudos actually for them for creating an interesting take on how to approach a concept and give it a spin with fantasy to MAYBE provoke people to think about some "bigger" world concerns ..........BUT of course small minds seek small concepts because thinking to big hurts ........trust me i get that ..i too enjoy my boom pow giant monster flicks ........

ACTING isnt to bad here either ......people need to understand that in indie films and lower budget films your not going to get keano reeves .....who ...literally acts the exact same in every film ....or laurence fishburn ...who ....acts .the exact same in every movie ....hmmmmm how about samuel L jackson...nope ..never mind ... uh,...huh ...well dang ...i suppose those actors are just the absolute best though huh seeing how they get paid MILLIONS to do the same thing over and over and everyone doesnt seem to mind ... so how about cutting the little-r people some slack .......they did a decent job here .......

the lighting OUCH here we might have an issue however ...... sometimes i think they lit the scenes with a potato ....... im like .......did i just go blind ? .... well crap i would like to see whats going on but i guess ill just have to use that thing called imagination i keep hearing about on those kid cartoons .........editing was on par ...and sound wasnt to up and down like my bio polar depression ......so all and all were good there ........

it WAS a slow roller though ........it was paced well but not filled to the top with non stop action and intense nonsense .......this feels more like you would see it on the lifetime channel than the sci fi channel ...... not to sound sexist BUT you can tell it was written by a girl ........it had more attempts at connecting with the audience than a film written and directed by a guy would have had ......... so it does walk along at its own pace rather than charge face first blowing everything up .....just keep that in mind before you hit that play button

all and all if you can handle a movie with a story and a point that juts kind of goes along .....youll enjoy it ......

7/10

PS - i would be amiss if i didnt add , IF this was a legit thing though ..... for real just use your witch powers to blast everyone that came against you ......solve the problems of witch hunters from the get go ..........if you got super powers use them ..dont hide .... this is kind of going along the idea of the Xmen movies with the political "mutants problem" and hiding people with powers thing , IF they would have had a magneto .... PROBLEMS SOLVED lol.........

A waiting game
jeremysbarton5 July 2022
Overall, a VERY slow movie. The few suspenseful moments don't make up for a story that failed to meet its potential (think A Handmaid's Tale meets any PG-13 witch movie). You keep waiting for some sustained action only to be disappointed by the plot line falling flat.
