- Stacey and Zelly, both of El's stepbrothers, would constantly mistreat El by making him do more work, locking him up in the sneakers room, and causing him to look bad in front of the King family. This can be upsetting for some viewers.
- El and his stepfather would constantly be at odds with each other. However, this conflict is noticeably much lighter and softer compared to that between Cinderella and her stepmother in the original story as the former conflict focuses on the stepfather being very stressed out and the latter conflict focusing on jealousy and abuse.
