Taylor Swift may or may not be aligned with the interests of the U.S. government (she’s definitely not), but she does wield immense cultural power. Every time the 14-time Grammy winner includes an obscure lyrical reference in her songs, it creates an opportunity for the nerds who recognize it to say something like, oh, “But do you know what’s really cool about Clara Bow?”
So … do you know what’s really cool about Clara Bow?
Until this week, Clara Bow was just another silent movie star whose career got reduced to a persona in popular culture (the hedonistic “It Girl” both in the movie “It” and in her real life). But now that her name is revealed as inspiring a track on Swfit’s upcoming album “The Tortured Poets Department,” expect Bow to become a sensation all over again, 100 years after her heyday.

Warning: contains major finale spoilers for The Tourist season two.
In The Tourist season one, Jamie Dornan played Elliot Stanley, an amnesia sufferer who pieced together unsavoury details about his life before he lost his memory in a road collision. Elliot had been the accountant of an international drug baron named Kostas, from whom he’d stolen $1 million in cash in collusion with Kostas’ con-artist fiancée ‘Victoria’. He’d forced vulnerable addicts including a Russian woman named Lena Pascal to become drug mules, resulting in the deaths of two of Lena’s friends. Elliot had also fallen for Australian traffic cop Helen Chambers, whose forgiveness of his past misdeeds gave him enough hope that he chose not to take his own life in the season’s final moments.

Henry Kissinger, who as national security advisor and secretary of state for Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford became one of the most influential, famous and controversial diplomats of the 20th century, died Wednesday in his home in Connecticut. He was 100.
A consultant to almost every President of the United States since leaving the State Department in 1977, Kissinger was instrumental in the historic opening to China in 1972. He was also a hawk during the Vietnam War, a master strategist in geopolitics and Beltway power, and an architect of Middle East shuttle diplomacy. With a realpolitik legacy that is as complicated as any American statesman, the pragmatic and cynical German-born Kissinger also was a much lauded and criticized recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973 for his role in ending the war in Southeast Asia.

Helen Mirren Claps Back At Backlash Over ‘Golda’ Casting, Insists She Told Director ‘I’m Not Jewish’
Backlash over Helen Mirren’s casting in “Golda”, a new biopic about late Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, has flared up, and Mirren is responding.
Speaking with Britain’s Radio Times, the Oscar winner said that she understands criticisms that she — a non-Jewish actor — is playing an iconic Jewish woman.
“I did tell Guy that I’m not Jewish, in case he thought I was.”
While controversy over her casting emerged last year, Mirren told the magazine that “the whole issue of casting has exploded out of the water fairly recently.”

According to 85% of Gold Derby’s 2024 Golden Globes predictors, former Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress champion Emma Stone (2016’s “La La Land”) is practically assured a repeat victory thanks to her work in the fantasy epic “Poor Things.” Assuming this decisive opinion is truly reflective of those of Golden Globes voters, it would only make sense for her to leverage that love into a same-year Best TV Comedy Actress notice for her performance on the buzzy new Showtime series “The Curse.”
Were she to prevail on her potential bids for said big screen and small screen projects, she would make history as the youngest individual to simultaneously achieve both types of acting Golden Globe wins.

Austin Butler is going from the sands of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two to a life of crime for City on Fire, an adaptation of Don Winslow’s novel from Sony 3000 Pictures. In addition to his starring role, Butler produces alongside David Heyman and Shane Salerno. No director or writers have joined the project, but the studio will prioritize the adaptation. City on Fire is the first title in a trilogy, setting up the potential for Butler to star in his first franchise.
According to Deadline, Winslow’s trilogy borrows inspiration from The Iliad, Odyssey, Aeneid, and Greek tragedies but takes place in a modern setting. “The trilogy focuses on two criminal empires — one Irish, the other Italian — that control all of New England. Swirl your mind back to last October, when word first broke that the long-gestating sequel to 1996's storm-chasing thriller Twister was actually moving ahead. Titled Twisters, it has just picked up its first lead actor, with Daisy Edgar-Jones aboard to star.
Minari's Lee Isaac Chung is in the director's chair for the new film, which if it stays true to what was reported last year, will focus on the daughter of Helen Hunt's Jo Harding and Bill Paxton's Bill Harding from the original. The hope is for Hunt to make an appearance.
The casting of Edgar-Jones makes us think it'll come to pass, with The Revenant's Mark L. Smith on script duty. Steven Spielberg has been pushing this one forward, with a rare co-producing deal between Universal and Warner Bros.
All being well, it should be in cinemas around July 2024.

This uncanny and transgressive film about a young woman who tracks down her birth parents is Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor’s best work yet
Writer-directors Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor have returned to the London film festival with their best work yet. At one level, it’s another eerie and uncanny movie shot with cool blankness and emotional distance; a meditation on the themes they have already explored in earlier movies such as Helen (2008) and Mister John (2013): ideas about double lives, impersonations, alternative existences and identities. But Rose Plays Julie has much more dramatic solidity and punch. Whereas some of their earlier work, however intriguing, sometimes looked like melting away into the mist, this film grabs you by the throat.
The drama begins by seeming to be hardly more than a poignant evocation of loneliness and regret. Then it escalates into an edge-of-the-seat suspense thriller of the sort that Chabrol might have admired,...

Zazie Beetz has earned her first Emmy nomination this year for Best Comedy Supporting Actress as Van Keefer on the FX comedy series “Atlanta.” She’s one of the new faces from the show that helped to nearly triple its Emmy nominations from 6 to 16 from its first season to its second season. To best showcase her work, Beetz has submitted for voters’ consideration the fourth episode of season two, “Helen.”
In the episode, Van and Earn (Donald Glover) take a road trip to the city of Helen, Georgia, for Fastnacht, a Swiss-German festival that Van and her friends enjoy but which makes Earn uneasy, resulting in their relationship problems coming to a head. Over the course of the episode Van slowly admits (to herself and to others) that she and Earn are growing apart, and by the end, after staking their relationship on a best-of-five table tennis match, it is...

After six nominations and winning two Emmys last year, both for series creator and star Donald Glover as Best Comedy Actor and Best Comedy Directing, I’m expecting FX’s “Atlanta” to bring in a bigger haul of noms this year for its critically acclaimed second season. In our current combined odds, the series is already our frontrunner to win two awards: Best Comedy Series with 4/1 odds and a repeat in Best Comedy Actor for Glover with 3/1 odds. And yet in order to top last year’s six nominations, “Atlanta” will likely need to gain support in the acting categories.
Below I break down five of the show’s performers, their current odds in the race and the episodes Emmy voters need to watch in order to see their best work from this season. Overall, I think “Atlanta” Should get these five nominations for acting, but what do you think?...

The year so far has been crammed with so much great television that even with many standbys absent from the scene — fan favorites including “Better Call Saul,” “Game of Thrones,” and “Veep” have not broadcast episodes in 2018 — a list of the year’s great TV feels comprehensive, even with half the year to go. This list of 13 television shows and one TV movie, a mix of new and returning broadcasts, is an attempt to name some of what stood out most sharply to Variety‘s critics: Those shows that, in an unprecedentedly crowded landscape, demanded our attention and earned our appreciation. The first half of the year has been strong enough to make the eventual task of winnowing down a year-end best list seem very difficult indeed; for now, here are some shows from the past six months worth catching up on.

“She wants independence,” says “Atlanta” co-star Zazie Beetz about her character Van’s emotional journey through season two of the critically acclaimed FX comedy. But Van is ambivalent. She has a child with Earn Marks (Donald Glover), but she doesn’t know exactly what her relationship to Earn actually is. So while she strives to “be seen as Van” and not just as a mother or a girlfriend, “she still is placing her value on other people’s validation … She’s still carrying what she was trying to let go.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Beetz above.
Van and Earn’s relationship reached a crossroads this season in the episode “Helen,” in which they had to finally pick a path: be a full-fledged couple or just amicable co-parents. “I think they both individually need to figure out what is truly important to them,” Beetz explains about the couple’s impasse,...

“Atlanta” reached the halfway mark of its critically acclaimed second season on Thursday, April 5, with one of its most compelling, disturbing and Emmy worthy episodes. In “Teddy Perkins,” written by series creator and star Donald Glover and directed by series regular Hiro Murai, Lakeith Stanfield is handed his first stand-alone narrative of the series as Darius, continuing a trend that began in season one with episodes for Zazie Beetz’s Van (“Value”) and Brian Tyree Henry’s Paper Boi (“B.A.N.”) and continued this season in “Helen” and “Barbershop” in the two preceding installments.
In the episode, Darius ventures in a U-Haul truck to pick up a piano being offered for free on a message board by a wealthy recluse named Teddy Perkins (Glover), brother and caretaker to the now mute and wheelchair-bound musician Benny Hope (Derrick Haywood). Teddy, we come to find out, suffers from a number of psychological issues,...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for the “Atlanta” episode “Helen.”]
A couple who is dating drives to the girl’s hometown and is surprised by an encounter with a wild animal on the road. In town, the guy can’t seem to adjust to feeling scrutinized, is one of the few black people around, and finds the strange residents way too friendly and obsessed with him. Sound familiar?
It’s actually the premise of “Atlanta’s” Season 2 episode “Helen,” in which Earn (Donald Glover) and Van (Zazie Beetz) travel to Helen, Georgia to attend the Germanic festival celebration known as Fasnacht. But it’s probably not a coincidence that it bears a resemblance, especially stylistically and tonally, to Jordan Peele’s Oscar-winning film “Get Out.” Indie darling Amy Seimetz chatted with IndieWire about directing the episode, trying to capture Donald Glover’s version of the festival known as Fasnacht, and her odd connection to the story.

What horrible voices! For Christ's sake! Morons." Because they are annoying this year. Frankly, with Jocasta out of the house for now, we're really missing a core type of personality in the game: a happy person. Yeah, Cody is sort of affable. Christine seems friendly, and I loved her Hoh blog this week. Donny is part possum, and possums always seem satisfied. But Jocasta truly beamed. She was never dogged by being on the block, and she usually responded to the threat of elimination by dialing herself up on a fake phone and throwing down an incoherent one-liner about God. Oh, how I miss it. Rumor is God does too.

Some of our questions about "Big Brother 16" are truly unanswerable. For instance: Do Julie Chen and Les Moonves joke in their monstrous bed about what a crybaby creep Caleb is? Or: Is Jocasta outfitted by Brooks Brothers? And most importantly: How can Frankie be 31-years-old and thrilled about receiving a Justin Bieber album? I'll leave the FBI or Nasa to understand that one. Wednesday's episode was a so-so hour that mostly confirmed what we'd already guessed: Frankie would find a way to remove either Jocasta or Victoria from the block and replace that person with Amber. Hayden, in fact, won the power of veto in a highly libidinous cowboy-themed challenge (We'll get to it in a moment), and Frankie seized that opportunity to replace Victoria with the totally blindsided Amber. Poor girl. If you weren't calling her Leona Lewzer before, now you have an official reason. Girl will be bleeding...

Night two of "Big Brother 16" served up some saucy new houseguests and a couple of strange (er, confusing?) twists. We were aware of the existence of a "Team America" thanks to Wednesday night's premiere, but we just learned that Joey, a blue-haired person who recycles Aquafina bottles in the Pacific Northwest, was voted by viewers to be the first houseguest on the secret three-person team. She'll get special chances to win $5,000 for every silly challenge/dare she completes. "Now this is some Green I won't be recycling!" she doesn't say to us, but you can just effing imagine it. We also learned more about the two-hoh, four-block-nominee system of tyranny that Julie Chen is so excited about. (She is extra sinister this season. I always expect her to turn to the camera and whisper, "The houseguests don't know that right now they're drinking the blood of Les Moonves' first wife.

The Black Box – ABC’s “The Black Box” stars Ditch Davey as Dr. Ian Bickman, Kelly Reilly as Catherine Black and David Ajala as Will Van Renseller. (ABC/Andrew Eccles)
Black Box, ABC‘s latest drama, feels a lot like a show created by committee, and constructed largely by piecing together ratings research of plot and character points. A little bit House, a hint of Grey’s Anatomy, and a heaping dose of the hokey, “we’re calling you stupid,” plot construction of Scandal… et voilà. Of course, if those last two are among your favorite shows, welcome to your new obsession.
Dr. Catherine Black (Kelly Reilly) is the world’s most impressive and important neurologist… or whatever. She’s so cool that she has her own facility in New York City. Known as “The Cube,” it’s all neurology, all the time, and Dr. Black runs the show. But,...
