Nevertheless, a motley bunch of films starring names such as Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Ajay Devgn, Varun Dhawan, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Kriti Sanon are lined up for release in the coming months.
However, the million-dollar question looming over the furrowed brows of distributors is: Will these movies ensure the return of ‘achche din’ for Bollywood?

A harsh reminder that Covid is not going anywhere just yet: Cinemas in Indian capital Mumbai have been forced to scale back to 50% capacity just six weeks after they triumphantly returned to full occupancy.
India recorded 26,291 virus cases yesterday, its highest single-day number this year, and the trend has now been upward for several weeks.
As Deadline reported last month, India appeared to have made a remarkable recovery after being a virus hotbed last summer. The country had dropped beneath 10,000 cases per day at the beginning of this year and in response the government re-opened the economy to pre-pandemic levels. Cinemas returned to full occupancy from February 1, and in response distributors lined up slates of high-profile releases.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, which is the civic body governing Mumbai, confirmed today’s news in a tweet.

On Monday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, which is in charge of Mumbai, the commercial capital of India and the home of the Bollywood film industry, ordered that cinemas return to 50% occupancy, and curtailed social gatherings.
Cinemas across India had expanded to 100% capacity in February after operating at 50% for several months.
Mumbai is the capital of the western Indian state of Maharashtra, which recorded 15,000 new cases of Covid-19 and 48 deaths on Monday. In the neighboring state of Gujarat, rising cases have meant that businesses, including cinemas, are now required to cease operating by 10pm.
Crowds of more than 65,000 people each attended the first two games of the ongoing Twenty20 International cricket series between England and India at Ahmedabad, Gujarat, over the past weekend. But the remaining three games...

There seems to be some positive development for the exhibition trade, as some filmmakers are venturing to release their films at the cinema halls. Last year, due to Corona, some of the best release slots were lost. Since then, neither filmmakers nor viewers have come forward to take in a movie at a cinema hall.
Not that any film released since lockdown in cinema halls was withdrawn -- albeit with restrictions -- had what is called face value or promotion. The few films that managed to release were not worth one's while even during normal situation, least of all in Corona time.
Since the cinemas reopened in September last year, films like "Khali Peeli", "Bolo Hau", "Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari", "Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi", "12 'O' Clock", "Madam Chief Minister", "Kaagaz", "Indoo Ki Jawani", "Amma Ki Boli" and a few other such films released in cinema halls. They had...

Mumbai, March 11: The new horror comedy Roohi is the first film in the genre that Alexx O'Nell has tried, but the Bollywood actor of American origin says he is familiar with the art of making people laugh through acting.
Alexx, who hails from Connecticut, plays Tim, an American filmmaker, who arrives at a tiny village in rural India to do a story on a very unique small-town tradition.
"This is indeed my first horror comedy and it is in fact, my first comedy since 2012, when Akshay Kumar and I faced off as rival scientists in Joker. While it has certainly been a while, I am no stranger to comedy. I perform in numerous comedy plays and musicals as a stage actor in the US, and I started my Indian film career with small roles in back-to-back-comedy movies Cheeni Kum and Loins Of Punjab Presents way back in 2007. Mumbai, March 11: Janhvi Kapoor says every actor is plagued with self-doubt, which helps them to do better. Daughter of late superstar Sridevi, Janhvi made her Bollywood debut in 2018 with Dhadak. The film fared below expectation.
She has since then been appreciated for her roles in the Ott-released films Ghost Stories and Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl. The element of self-doubt, it seems, has worked well in transforming her for the better.
"Self doubt is a part of every actor's journey. I think every actor is plagued with self-doubt but at least it pushes me to do better," informs Janhvi.
The actress currently awaits the release (this Friday) of the horror comedy Roohi. She says she doesn't think about taking up scripts in accordance to genres.
"There are directors I really want to work with. I don't even know if I think in accordance to genre. I want to do stories.

Roohi
Starring Janhvi Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Varun Sharma
Directed by Hardik Mehta
There are three principal actors playing four main characters in Roohi, all whipping up a Rambunctious mix of mirth and scares that lovers of the horror-comedy genre will love and laugh over until their bellies ache. This is the kind of wildly zany entertainment that doesn’t give us a chance to ask the one fundamental question that we must: do ghosts really exist? Well, even if they don’t they should, so that a film as outrageously over-the-top as this gets a chance to do a macabre yet amusing dance around our subconscious fear of the unknown.
Into this the world of spirits dive two friends Bhawra (Rajkummar Rao) and Kattani (Varun Sharma) who we gather are langotiya friends. Cheesy from head to toe (Rao and Sharma have a lot of fun with hair dye) they speak...

Roohi movie review is here. The Hindi language horror comedy film directed by Hardik Mehta is produced by Dinesh Vijan and Mrighdeep Singh Lamba under the banner Maddock Films in association with Jio Studios. Roohi stars Rajkummar Rao, Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Sharma in main leads. Roohi is hitting the screens on 11 March 2021.
Roohi movie review
Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock is back with another horror after the amazing Stree (2018). As per the Maddock’s horror tradition, Roohi is a delightful horror comedy that has a surprisingly unique meta layer.
Set somewhere in Uttar Pradesh two buddies Bhawra (Rajkummar Rao) and Kattanni (Varun Sharma) are part of the groom kidnapping (Pakaruah shaadi / Jabaria shaadi) gang led by Guniya Shakeel (Manav Vij). One day they get the assignment to kidnap Roohi (Janhvi Kapoor). Circumstances forced Bhawra and Kattanni to keep Roohi at a safe place amidst the jungle for a few days.

New Delhi, March 6 (Ians) Last year, the imposition of lockdown put a pause on the release of film music, pushing people towards the independent/non-film music, which in the pre-Covid times was, arguably, the secondary source of listening to music for most Indians.
A year later the scene has changed. Music channels, the streaming space as well as social media is overflowing with non-Bollywood music. Artistes would tell you they need to continue making music. The music labels affirm there is always an audience for art and entertainment, never mind lockdown. Both ways, artistes confined to their homes got busy creating music on laptops. The outcome was a sizeable repertoire of original sound.
"I think an artiste never stops making art if it is truly what they live for. I think constantly creating new music is like second nature for me and even if nobody hears it,...

New Delhi, March 6 (Ians) Rajkummar Rao has time and again proved that he is one of the best actors in Hindi cinema. Be it his performance as the strong-willed lawyer in Shahid, a dreaded terrorist in Omerta, a gullible boy in Stree or the naive Pritam in Bareilly Ki Barfi, the actor has raised his bar with every new role.
"The journey has been pretty overwhelming. I never expected this to happen. I always wanted to work of course and that's why I invested so much time on training and came to the city with no background or backbone, and with very little money. From there to here it is still like a dream to me, but I don't sit back and think about it," Rajkummar told Ians.
The actor likes to lives in the moment.
"I live each day as it comes so I just enjoy each and every moment.

Sachin-Jigar had earlier worked with the makers of Stree in 2018 and have now reunited with them for Roohi. "It is reassuring to work with a team that knows our working style. The music album of Roohi has something for everyone. It is a wholesome album with an upbeat party number, dance track and romantic songs. We have been fortunate to have listeners who have showered love on our music and we can't wait to present them the entire album of Roohi,...

New Delhi, Feb 27 (Ians) Ever since she made her debut in 2018, Janhvi Kapoor has been pitted against her contemporaries by the audience, ans also been compared to her mother, the late superstar Sridevi. The actress insists competition is healthy and says that there is enough work for everyone.
"I believe in healthy competition. I find my contemporaries inspiring and motivational. They keep me on my toes and they are doing such great work. There is something to learn from all of them. We are all finding our space and trying to pave our own way," Janhvi told Ians.
She added: "I really believe you can co-exist in the industry. There might be times when two or more people are eyeing the same film but that is a part of life. Ultimately what best for the film happens and what is meant for the film will happen, but...

Mumbai, Feb 26: Bollywood buffs are in for a lot of fresh pairs on screen this year. After the nearly complete no-show in 2020, many films set for release this year feature actors who have never shared the screen before.
Casting director and filmmaker Mukesh Chhabra says that seeing different actors pair up on screen for the first time is always a treat. "People love to see anything that is out of the box. So this is why they love it when new actors work together. Also, actors, too, are experimenting and they love to try out something new. It gives a very fresh look on screen. If you team up actors who have worked with each other before, you feel like they have been seen together so many times," says Chhabra.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh adds that this kind of pairing also brings in the numbers. "People are excited to see fresh pairings on screen.

Mumbai, Feb 25: Varun Sharma calls his next release Roohi the crazier sister of the 2018 Rajkummar Rao starrer Stree.
After Stree released in 2018, there has been a slew of horror comedies including Laxmii, and upcoming projects as Phone Bhoot, Bhoot Police, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, besides Roohi. Varun Sharma, however, is not scared of the competition.
"There is no fear as such. It is a new genre that got explored widely through Stree and we feel that Roohi is Stree's much crazier sister and the genre is widely accepted and people got exposed to and they liked it and I feel a lot of other films also. Whichever content is liked by people at the end of the day is (going to be made)," said Varun Sharma.
He added, "We really hope that the audience really enjoys (Roohi) as much as we enjoyed making the film. I mean there is nothing to fear about.

Exclusive: For Janhvi Kapoor, playing the lead role in the first major Bollywood film to hit Indian cinemas since they returned to full capacity earlier this month is a nerve-wracking responsibility. The movie, the horror comedy Roohi, has pressure on its shoulders to paint a rosy picture of the Indian box office market when it releases March 11, particularly while the wider country continues to make a remarkable recovery from the pandemic.
This kind of genre cinema has not historically been a big deal in India, but it is gaining traction, as evidenced by the buzzy reception to 2018 pic Stree, which was made by Roohi producer Dinesh Vijan. In the new film, Kapoor plays a woman possessed by a witch who can only be cured by marriage. As you might have guessed, it promises to have a cultural point to make, which the actress discusses below in an exclusive first chat...
