Need to fix a lot of things, but good job

The concept of this superhero universe is promising, combining ancient Javanese mythology into modern society. This potential concept was blown away by rushing the stories, mediocre directing, unnecessary characters, and awfully product placement.

The writers put too many things in the storyline resulting in a fast-paced and no emotional attachment story. I can't feel/empathize with the character's emotions and feelings. Sometimes relationships among characters appear out of nowhere, like the romantic feelings between the main character. This movie should focus more on how Yuda struggles to live his life while taking care of his mother and finding his true self-identity. Leave the in-universe world-building later on in other films.

As a new genre for Hanung Bramantyo as the director (and Indonesia's film industry), it is understandable that he is still not used to directing this genre. But he should be able to give a better performance than this.

The second most annoying part of this movie is two characters are really unnecessary, Quinn and Gege. They don't serve any important role, they don't contribute anything to the plot, and their dialogues are only saying something outloud and most of the time not related to the context of the scene. An important note is maybe Gege's character like that could be justified because he is a child. If these two characters were removed from the movie I'm sure nothing would be affected.

The last problem for me with this movie is how they place advertisements. The majority of the food and drink product placement is ok, not good, but in some ways is acceptable. On the other hand, the online marketplace advertisement is so weird. Why would someone create a dedicated scene with a completely unknown character who throws dirty/NSFW jokes just to advertise some online marketplace? This scene and the jokes made me cringe at best.

There is also a questionable plot hole in this movie regarding how Yuda's friends came to the final battlefield. But maybe it can be explained later.

In conclusion, this movie, Satria Dewa: Gatot Kaca needs to fix a lot of things to be able called a good/decent movie. Regardless of all the flaws in this movie I still appreciate the cast and the crews who work on this movie, they were all brave to take the challenge of creating a movie with a genre that is not popular enough in Indonesia's film industry. I also encourage anyone who reads this review to give this movie a chance and watch it in the cinema to support our local movie industry. I hope Satria Dewa Studio take lessons from their first movie, good job!

A Problem Start of Satria Dewa Universe

Gatotkaca is the First Instalment of Satria Dewa Universe, This Movie a Lot Many Problem.

Story or Script is Really Bad, Directing is Fine, Acting is Cheesy and Cringe (This Acting Looks Like Soap Opera or FTV), Cinematography is Fine, Editing Camera is Really Bad and Broken, CGI is Failed, Production Design is Good, Gatotkaca Costume Design is Okay (Kinda Captain Marvel Little Rip-off), Sound and Music is Really Bad, And The Most Annoying in Movie is A Lot Many Commercial or Ads.

Overall, A Disappointing Indonesia Superhero Movie, I Giving Score is 6/10, The Next Satria Dewa Movie Arjuna is Gonna Be Better Than Gatotkaca.

Entertaining and enjoyable enough...

When I sat down to watch the 2022 Indonesian action movie "Satria Dewa: Gatotkaca", here late in 2022, it was without ever having heard about the movie. But given my fascinatio and love of the Asian cinema, of course I needed no persuasion to sit down and give this movie a chance.

And I will say that "Satria Dewa: Gatotkaca" was actually entertaining enough, and writers Rahabi Mandra, Hanung Bramantyo and Tesadesrada Ryza did put together a good enough script and storyline here. However, I don't feel that the movie was really outstanding as per se, and there are far better Indonesian action movies out there. But it was entertaining enough, though I personally don't understand why they opted to turn the movie into a strange hybrid mix of superhero movie and "Mortal Kombat" towards the end, it was a rather strange change of direction for the overall feel of the movie.

I was, for the majority of the actors and actresses on the cast list, not familiar with the talents that starred in "Satria Dewa: Gatotkaca". In fact, the only familiar face to me here was Yayan Ruhian (playing Beceng), and he is always a nice addition to any movie.

Something that worked well in favor of director Hanung Bramantyo's movie was the action sequences and the special effects. There was quite a lot of action in the movie, and it was nicely choreographed and executed on the screen, which added a lot of enjoyment to the movie. And the special effects were quite surprisingly good for an Indonesian movie.

While "Satria Dewa: Gatotkaca" was entertaining enough, it is hardly a movie that I will ever return to watch a second time though.

My rating of "Satria Dewa: Gatotkaca" lands on a five out of ten stars.

Lots Of Problems That Needs To Be Fixed, The First One Is The Story And The Music

Might be a good start for a studio name satria dewa, but please fix this movie, i dont have a problem with the visual effect, the problem is with the music and the story, the story was uninteresting and the music was so dramatic. When will indonesian superhero movie will be good? What im saying this movie isn't bad or good, its like low average.

Terrible writing, mediocre acting, cringe dialogue, and too much ugly advertisements.

There is so much plot holes and unexplained things through out the film. No character development at all. I don't feel any emotional attachment to any characters. There's also two useless character that should be just thrown off.

The dialog is boring as h*ll and filled with lots of long expositions. Not follow "show don't tell" rule at all. And don't get me started on the advertisements! Ugh, I understand they need a lot of money to produce a movie, it's normal. But how they show us the advertisements is like an insult to viewers.

I'm glad Hanung Bramantyo (director and writer of this film) not directing Gundala like what it originally planned. Gundala ends up in better hands and not turning like this film.

Pathetic

Cringey, lame and disconnected script, very lame jokes (I couldn't believe they could make Rigen and Butet, very funny comedians, to sound lame and weird), cheap and obnoxious advertisements and product placements all over, weird lighting and angles and continuities, storyline and acting like a low budget sinetron (telenovela), out of place and unnecessary characters (Quinn is annoying as hell), over the top but weird action scenes, awkward editing, and the list goes on.

I couldn't even force myself to finish watching this movie (I'm writing this as the video is playing, over half way through the movie). Was actually looking forward to see a good movie in this topic and story, instead I ended up cursing and being confused more and more as the movie plays.

All in all, a total disappointment.

To those who give 10/10 stars, I can only assume you either work with the production team (and/or sponsors) or are very supportive of someone you know that's related to them.

A quite good movie, the casts are competent to deliver the whole story, yet the storyline is somewhat poor and slow pace. The fighting choreography is cool, thanks to Mr. Yayan and Mr. Cecep as well. I like the CGI, it is quite close to the quality of marvel movies. Hence it deserves appreciation.

Product placement ruins the movie.

The movie starts out okay, then slowly hitting rock bottom in terms of film quality. I wish the Quinn character would just fall from that bridge and plummet down to her agonizing death. No character development whatsoever. Cringe dialogue throughout the movie and for God sake, the product placement ruins the experience for me. The CG is okay, I only like the last part of the whole movie, when gatot fights beceng in their final super hero forms. That was the only redeeming quality in the whole movie. I'm surprised why hanung chose to have the product placement in his first superhero movie. It's just so unecessary and ruins the film.

Good Try

The team has tried to develop the story of super hero Gatot Kaca, and it is a good try. Appreciation to all the team. The story could be better, as well as the actions. Hope the next session of this Satria Dewa's super heros series will be a really competitor to Bumi Langit's super heroes series...

Action Scene too much cutting

Watching the action scene makes me headache theres too much cut to cut clip, i cant focus and its hard to figure out what are they doing.

I know, that particular way of editing is to help the action scene to cover bad movement etc but in my opinion they were doing it too much.

I dont know who's responsible for this, but for a superhero movie i think the action part is one of the biggest factor people would watch.

And i think they could've done much better for the choreography, i thought this character would have a superstrength kinda like power, that the fight will full with breaking walls and stuff intead of just ordinary martial art fighting, i think the choregrapher should've work more on the imagination of the power of the superhero, and not just a choreofighting.

This incredible movie should gain more appreciation for its quality

Very impressed by its story line and visual effects. For Indonesian movie industry, this is a significant improvement. Those who has enthusiasm and understand the traditional javanese culture and its mythology, will be impressed by its well elaborated storyline with the present and modern culture. I believed that it requires a lot of dedication to Indonesian (specifically javanese) culture to create this impressive story line.

Besides the local culture and values that impressively brought by the film, the visual effects also should be appreciated. Maybe there are still several improvement that could be improved in the future, but these effects is very developed and shows Indonesia's potential to compete in the international film industry. People should realize and appreciate this to support Indonesian film industry. For many years, Indonesian film got a lot of critics for its poor visuals such seen in Indonesian local TV series (read : sinetron), but the presence of this well visualized movie has shown a significant local filn industry development that should be appreciated.

I love how they setup the ambience by sets the light (as seen at Yuda's flat where he lives with his mom when he grown up as adult) that successfully visualizes 'slum' area like the one in many hollywood sci-fi film.

Last, although this movie still requires several optimization, but it has shown an impressive quality for the modernIndonesian film industry.

You can find THE ONE, but still end up with nothing.

Plenty of sci-fi/fantasy flicks revolve around finding THE ONE of some prophecy who will save the world from ...whatever. Usually it's an average young guy (occasionally a kid or young woman) who seems an unlikely, underqualified wearer of that lofty mantel. Keanu Reeves in the Matrix was probably the most famous. Yuda, the hero of this iteration of the concept, can only claim to be the most... recent.

The movie runs too long for what it delivers. It takes almost half of its two hours just to get the kid started. Then another half hour of figuring out who's who on both sides of this eternal conflict. Waaaay too much exposition for the amount of action they manage to stage; overcrowded with past and present characters involved in this existential struggle. And when the big CGI-laden fights finally begin, they're mostly in dim lighting with misty overlays, and cut so jerkily that it's hard to appreciate whatever physical skills the players may be deploying.

All of this for the first installment of an intended series. No spoiler in saying the good guys win this battle, but it's not the end of the war. The Yuda character might play well in a tighter package, but the the producers have to clean house on writing, directing and editing to make the sequel(s) worth following.

A Disappointing and Insulting Addition to the Indonesian Superhero Genre

Satriadewa: Gatotkaca (2022) is a disappointing addition to the Indonesian superhero genre. The movie is plagued by poor dialogue, a messed up plot, mediocre acting, and downright insulting advertisements. None of the characters manage to create any emotional attachment, and there is no character development to speak of. Quinn and Gege are completely useless characters, and the action sequences are ruined by poor editing skills.

The inclusion of advertisements and product placement in this movie is a major turn off, and it feels like the filmmakers are purposely trying to insult the audience with their poor choices. Making fun of prostitution in a movie that is supposedly rated for general audiences is also a poor decision, and it reflects poorly on the studio's ethics. In fact, the studio doesn't even credit the costume designer, which is a clear sign of their lack of professionalism.

Furthermore, Gatotkaca is not even an Indonesian character, but rather a character from Indian mythology. This further highlights the lack of research and effort put into this movie, and it is a shame to see such a beloved character treated with such disrespect.

Overall, Satriadewa: Gatotkaca (2022) is a movie that should be avoided by anyone looking for a quality superhero film. The poor quality of the movie and the lack of respect for the source material make it a frustrating and unenjoyable experience.

Totally Dissapointing

The story plot idea is good but the executuon is weak in story telling. It super hero movie so please stop treat it like a common drama. Does it because of the director background or the script lead this movie just like drama.

Heroic and fighting scene mostly filming in a dark place or at night I hot no clue why they make this kind of decision. I thought the references are every where, or prob they want to make ir like DC instead of Marvel?

People want to see superheroes so to be fair to the audiences the portion of heroic scene must be in balance.

This Wasting my 2 hour time watching this sinetron.

Hope the other universe heroes will be better in film making.

Gatotkaca Sucks

I had high hopes in this movie, but ended up very disappointed. Hanung Bramantyo is not the right director to make a superhero movie! Keep that in mind, the next time you try to make another one. Where should I start? So many bad points to poke around, so little time. First of all, the character development wasn't deep enough to make the audience care enough about the protagonist. Second, the background story wasn't very clear at the beginning of the movie, that when it was explained, it was already too late. Third, so many inconsistencies in the fighting sequences. Sometimes the protagonist was so weak, that even the thugs can kick him around. But sometimes he gets so strong that he can defeat the boss level enemy with one punch. Fourth, the fighting sequences are so hard to follow. Probably because of most of them are played in the dark. Next time, use better lighting, even if the place is supposed to be dark. I had a hard time figuring out who got hit, the bad guy or the good guy, cause it was so dark! Fifth, it's a superhero movie with a very weak protagonist. Even when he got his special weapon, he still got his ass kicked by the enemy. And the other characters weren't that good at fighting the bad guys. It's annoying to see the good guys get kicked around so easily and the bad guys thrives. Overall, this movie sucks big time! I'm so disappointed. The only reason I didn't give it 4 stars is because I don't want Indonesian movie makers to stop trying to make a good superhero movie. Let this fiasco be a lesson to make better ones in the future. Learn from experience.

Not bad, but not good enough

The plot seems slow. This characteristic of a Hanung drama film is carried over into this film. In terms of visual effects, some parts are decent, but there are still a lot of visual effects that are stiff, like in television soap operas. In terms of sound design, some parts are uneven between the music score and the sound design. In fact, they tend to be uneven, with the sound effects being louder than the music. The main theme of the music itself is not strong, so it doesn't represent Gatot Kaca. I'm confused about why have to follow Hollywood style, but it doesn't work." The colour grading is great.

I don't (really) understand this movie.

Gatotkaca is kind of time-killing movie. Watch it if you have nothing to do. It is enjoyable if you not put high expectation on it.

The story is dull, everything is linear and plain. It's simple and have interesting premise but terrible execution. Acting is so-so. I love that part where they talking about Javanese ancient culture, but it also not that good to be executed. Everything is cluttering and need to be fixed. Poor directing and dialogue. I feel the character development doesn't exist. The action scenes not really appealing to me. It's boring me enough that I watch this while doing anything else.

In summary, this movie still enjoyable, kids-friendly and well done enough if I put this in Indonesian movie standard category.

It's a good start but need more improvement

The choreography and fighting scene is badass. But the plot and some of the dialogues are kind of feel like Indonesian drama eventho this is an actual superhero movie, a bunch of unnecessarily annoying characters made it feels like a sinetron. The CGI is pretty impressive in my opinion, I didn't expect it to be this good. The costumes, CGI and combined with fighting choreography made the scene way more interesting than marvel/DC movie fight scenes. Some of the characters needs more depth and background stories.

This movie managed to combine traditional culture, ancient mythology and modern aspects in a beautiful way.

LEGEND OF GATOTAKACA (2023)-Movie Review. Legend of Gatotakaca is a fun 2023 action film that blends martial arts, cultural mythology, and the super-hero genre. Here is a synopsis and review of this Well Go USA Entertainment release.

SYNOPSIS:

After witnessing the shocking murder of his best friend by a masked assassin with terrifying superpowers, Yuda stumbles upon a secret prophecy long concealed by powerful people. After unlocking dormant abilities of his own, Yuda discovers that he-an ordinary college kid with no belief in the old legends-may very well be the key to winning the upcoming battle against an ancient evil.

REVIEW:

Legend of Gatotakaca is an action film that blends martial arts, cultural mythology, and the super-hero genre. In watching the film I had no idea about the relationship of the story and the characters to Indonesian culture and mythology. Once I began watching, it my peaked curiosity so I researched a bit about the subject, and I began to understand that the film is as tied to Indonesian mythology as Marvel's Thor is to Norse mythology.

I am not sure if familiarity is essential to viewing the film. In fact, intimate knowledge of the history of the general story and characters may make this film better, or worse, to watch depending on your vantage point. For me, I watched it independent of a feeling on how it relates to the source material.

The film is superhero origin story, of sorts, about a chosen, young man whose destiny is to the discover the truth about his legacy. Ricky Nazar, is good in the starring role. He brings an innocence and reluctance to the role that is the heart of the journey towards the fulfillment of his legacy to save the world from evil forces.

As the story develops and Nazar learns more about his family and his calling he meets up with a series of colorful characters, both good on his side, and against him. As for his friends and love interest, they are very enjoyable to watch. There is almost a Saban Power Rangers quality to the kinship.

The cast of villains are colorful and well known, even to American audiences for their roles in International martial arts films such as the John Wick movies. They lend credibility to the martial arts action and fighting sequences, which are interspersed in the movie, and are very effective in the concluding quarter of the film.

The special effects and fight scenes are decent, albeit there is a comic book quality to the execution of it all. The film has some great action sequences, and is more less violent that so many other Indonesian films such as The Raid, Headshot, and The Night Comes For Us.

My one criticism of the film is that it is a little too long, and the editing is not as tight as it could be. The are several superfluous scenes which could have been removed for a sharper, and tighter, finished product. Despite this, Legend of Gatotakaca is still a very enjoyable, and visually pleasing martial arts and action film.

Wonderful movie

This movie and the entire movie-verse has a huge market in India. Please please please translate this into several indian languages and release all the subsequent movies in India. You also need a bigger budget and collaboration with some Indian producers / directors. This can be a great blockbuster. I belong to the movie industry family, so please don't think that this is a random comment. Southern India and Southeast Asia has always been culturally connected. This movie can revive the relationship between India and Indonesia. Please do consider my thought and idea. Semoga Beruntung. Love from India.

Overall is Good

I love every aspect of this movie like storyline, scoring, video fx, and costumes. At first I didn't have high expectations for this film, but it turned out that I was amazed.

Pro: Audio fx is very eargasm, I love it. Video fx has developed quite significantly compared to local films lately. The costumes used combine elements of modernization so that they are not too outdated.

Cons: I think the plot is good, but the execution is a bit lacking. And yeah, ads. Yes, there are ads in this film. Honestly, it wasn't a big deal for me, but the placement was so striking that it was a bit annoying and forced to fit to the storyline.

Needs LOTS of improvement but its a good progress

I am a very skeptical person, i have a very high standard since i watched and read lots of superheroes movie since i was a kid. Indonesia this few years back started to make superheroes movies which i think is good but this is the first one i accept as good progress.

I enjoyed this one not for the wrong reasons this time- well i always laugh at Indonesian superhero movies ex: G*nd*** or W*r* S*****, which i regret spending my money in theatre for. I AM ONE THAT IS ALWAYS UP FOR GOOD PROGRESS IN INDONESIAN MOVIES.

And i really appreciate the production team who did it with way SMALLER BUDGED than the others and didn't dissapoint me. - i always have low expectation for Indonesian movies but i think this one have a real progress.

I didn't watch this one in theatre and instead wait for it in Netflix because of the dissapointing quality of another Indonesian superhero movies before this one - i do regret it, because this one deserve more support that those two.

I know its hard to make, bcs actors and actress in Indonesia is mostly not good enough and its hard to break out of those 'sinetron' like quality of acting.

Its a good start. I think the story is alr good, relateable, we get sympathetic with the characters background story, more 'realistic' story- altho the acting didn't cut it so we can't feel it at times, but the ending have lots of potential, and interesting world concept - feels promising - i like it that it doesn't happen in 'real' Indonesia but in alternate universe which gave it lots of more plot potential. The love story seems rushed, the whole story in the movie feels like kind of rushed but not as bad as the another one since the character background is pretty much 'clear'.

I would even read their comics if there are one - but the art must be good tho :D.

The props is good, the 2D, CGI, the costume, the diversity of characters- officially and realistically lots lots better than the Indonesian superheroes movie i watched before (which i can't stop laughing for the bad story, bad costume, bad character background arc). The other was totally funny- for lots of wrong reasons.

There is LOT of problems in execution of this movie- the actor and actress acting is mediocre at most. The only actor that was 'pass-able' is Yayan, probably the villain? And maybe Pande?. The dialog, can be lots better- it was too 'rigid', and weird at times. The Aswatama?- can be better, it was not looking as scary as i thought it should look tho. The 2D scene gave me expectation like it will be so scary but its not enough in rl. Change of scene can be confusing and kind of 'jumpy', so please fix it.

Lots of scene can be improved with more budged and better writing actually which is why i rate this as good progress.

For the first time PROBLEM came not from the STORY being bad, or bad cgi, or bad props. I do appreciate the details they put in the character living space, and costume which is good for indonesian movie. The turning scene can be better tho- i find it very bad in there but i will not explain it more.

Fighting scene also can be better- but with lots lots of comparison from another Indonesian superhero movie this is alr good enough for now.

The camera is kind of confusing sometimes and makes me and my friend dizzy especially while fighting, there is a lot of time.

There is a LOTS of advertisement time in this movie and i hate that - but, i know this movie have a very limited budged compared to another Indonesian superhero movie. So it seems, was due to the money problems - which i didn't blame the production team for - but it can be put better. It was annoying and felt like insult to audience however.

I wanna say I appreciate it- even with smaller budged, and not much exposure if we compare it to another, it is alr lots better than the others. With the story, diversity of cast, CGI, 2D.

Thanks for the good progress if this can reach the production team. Don't get discouraged. And i do gave this higher rating bcs i get shocked by the fact this one scoring lower than the others- this one deserve better- altho they can tune down the advertisement next time.

Strong 9/10 for the effort!

Honestly, this movie is sooooooo much better than I expected. I really love the plot, acting, and the CGI is surprisingly good for Indonesian movie. The writings are so good, they can bring folklores into a modern era story that's very relatable. This movie has a strong start, quite boring in the middle, but they finished it with a big CGI fight which was so satisfying. Fight scenes are good but there are some flaws. The advertisements are a little bit too much, yeah I can imagine the big production cost. 2 thumbs up for the director, casts, and the team. Can't wait for the next project, and more CGI fights please!!!!!!!!!!!!!
