Okay, so it's been a bit since I've done a review, and mostly because what I've watched hasn't been all that great. Lately, I figured I'd catch up a little on Foreign Language Tv/Movies (A.K.A. "F.L.T.M."). So far I've watched as much as I could of this one and that one, there's even a couple I just may go back to. But, I've watched both The Cliff (2020) and The Schouwendam 12, and I have to say I enjoyed both of them........ there was excitement, romance, edge of your seat thrills......... and still the endings are as if everyone just got tired of making it anymore and got up and left!!! Yes, this may be a bit over dramatic, but really!!! We want stuff we want to watch, they won't know what we want if we don't tell them!!! And I've been shouting it from the roof tops!!! Focus On The Ending!!!! Focus On The Ending!!!! Focus On The Ending!!!!!!! PLEASE, I'm begging you now. You've got us here on quarantine, an ultimate audience, entertain us!!!!!!!!

Seriously, the most incompetent LE on the planet
txriverotter13 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm almost finished with the entire show, on episode nine. Somehow I've managed to make it thru, albeit with lots of screaming at the TV.
First and foremost, someone please tell the writers and/or directors to consult with actual LE when doing a gritty crime drama. The lead detective, Karlijn, is terrible and the young officer is not any better!
Karlijn zooms in on one character from the get-go, and attempts to prove he's guilty throughout the entire series. She's not trying to solve the case. She wants to prove Olaf, if he is indeed Olaf, is guilty. The worst kind of investigating.
Meanwhile, murders galore occurr all over the village, and no matter who it is or what happened, she tries to connect it with Olaf. It's quite ridiculous. I know there are LE who do this IRL, and those are terrible detectives as well.
And while she's busy trying to prove Olaf's guilt, things are going down all over town that she and the other LE are completely ignoring. When Maud is murdered, they discover cocaine in a locked cabinet on their boat. She questions the husband, he gives some very obvious nervous and lame answers, so does she keep the husband under surveillance? Of course not! Meanwhile, Angry Stupid Husband and Creepy Van Something-Or-Other hop into into their boats to go to a big drug deal, where he accuses the drug dealer of killing his wife, and almost gets the two of them killed. But the police aren't aware of any of it, and they never follow up on it ever again!
Another situation, Olaf is walking around an old area where there used to be a community garden and cabins, because he has a memory flashback to being tied up in a basement, and it turns out there are also underground tunnels that only certain locals know about. LE searches the whole area, finds the bullet casings IN THE DARK, and somehow never sees the entrances to the basement or the tunnels, until a couple episodes later, and by the young officer assisting Karlijn. It's so frustrating!
But the most annoying thing of all has got to be the looks she gives Olaf CONSTANTLY. She's forever giving him the "I know what you did and it's only a matter of time before I catch you.". It seriously makes you want to slap that smug glare right off her face.
And they've given her a back story of her son's suicide, which you find out later on, and even that didn't make me feel sorry for her. She's so awful, and her incompetence has allowed the murderer(s) get away with at least four more murders, so it's hard to feel any sympathy for her character.

Great Dutch Murder Mystery

Kept me glued ....
PeterHerrmann7 April 2020
Intricate. The characters seemed (mostly) very real. The 'whodunit' aspect really had me focused. The cinematography was great. Much of the action/dialogue was low-key ... but not so low-key as to bore me (just the opposite). According to a critic of this series, it is a followup - same wrtiers, different cast - to 'The Oldenheim 12' ... which I will now try to find (somewhere).

Do you know what a "railroad switch" is? It's when the train is chugging along nicely, but then, at the last second, a switch is thrown and with a bone-jarring neck snapping jerk, the train suddenly veers off onto another set of tracks. Gah. What the heck?
The journey this movie made was much like that train zipping along, making good time and getting you where you want to go and then ------ poof!-------- just like that, where'd the plot go?
With this series, chug chug chug chug, everything is building up and, yep, you're making good time. You're enjoying the ride, you're engaged and really looking forward to finding out whodunit, and then . . . WHAT THE HELL?!? Goddamnit! Someone pulled that railroad switch and look out---------You're headed straight for>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Crazy Town.
Episode 9. Everything was okay up till then, and then the entire story completely springt de haai. Jumps the shark. You are left sitting there with your jaw hanging in disbelief------and not in a good way, either. You're left feeling absolutely furious that you can't find out where these writers live so you can go egg their houses.
What a stupid, inane, ridiculous nonsensical thing to do to a perfectly good murder mystery.
After you find out who's been knocking off the local residents, you don't really even care anymore who it was that killed "Alice" 25 years earlier. You know it's going to be some lame story. Some "Oooohhhhh. We NEVER thought it could be ***that*** person . . . lame excuse for a killer."
Do I sound angry? Tsk. Yeah. I guess I am. This was such a good story, until . . . it wasn't. Lame, lame, lame.
And the title for my review?--------- "Who's your Daddy?" takes up more than 1/2 the story. Sorry, Netherlands. You'll have to do better than this.

You won't believe the ending!!!

It takes a really intriguing plot to keep me interested enough to watch a foreign film with subtitles... I'm an English speaker. Although at first I found it a bit slow, with every episode I became increasing intrigued with the mystery of what really happened to the teens. You won't know the who, how or when until the last two episodes and, MAN IT BLEW ME AWAY!!!!
I'm now scouring to find where I can watch the Oldenhiem 12...the series that preceded this one. So glad to see on the net that there will probably be another 12 series yet to come!

My Mother and I loved this show. It was really well written even if the ending is underwhelming. We really enjoyed watching this together and thought the acting was great. If you love a good mystery then check it out!
Best Series of ALL TIME!
dictionary-1887131 August 2023
Unlike anything I have ever watched in over 65 years of TV viewing. Easily, the best series of all time.
Kept me guessing till the end. Acting is superb. Writing is top notch. I've watched this series multiple times and like it better each time.
I can't understand the critics who give this show a poor rating. Apparently, they require unlimited car crashes and fist fights.
Unlike most modern dramatic TV shows, this one relies on good storytelling, not on special effects, gratuitous violence or sex.
Besides the excellent storytelling, the character development is outstanding.
The viewer won't be disappointed.

Sure it's slow, but packs a punch

I thoroughly enjoyed this miniseries. It meanders a bit here and there, but wow! I never would've guessed the ending and there are LOTS of surprising twists along the way. Engaging themes of love, justice, sacrifice and the unreliable narrator.
Loved this Dutch series

Sloooooow

Watch episodes 1 and 2 then 9 and 10 and skip the middle muddle. Has Olaf returned and does he know what happened to the 12-year-old girl who disappeared with him? By the time this is over, several people have been murdered and one thing is certain: Schouwendam is one screwed up village. If you decide to watch it all, you will be frustrated by the most incompetent police anywhere, and scratching your head over a confusing subplot about postpartum depression. And don't say you weren't warned.
No, just NO!

Early episodes very interesting but series "jumped the shark",
E Canuck29 November 2020
I found the premise and the early episodes very interesting but the final episodes of the 10 are quite ridiculous. I have to say the story "jumped the shark". No high production values or gorgeous scenery can compensate for a deficient concept and writing that goes for the sensational and leaves believability behind.
Bad acting

Warning: Spoilers
OK. Have to admit up until the last episode I was really curious how this was going to end and I defo bulked watched it. But the ending is just completely unrealistic.
I won't spoil stuff but random people turning into maniac killers for fun without any proper reason is just a lame and easy way out of the story. Also, watching this Olaf guy was horrible I've never seen a more horrible person to look at, pasty and whimpy and lardy looking guy who you can't have any sympathy for and anytime he was on screen I wanted to look away (which was a lot of the time).
I'm still giving it a 5 because a episodes but the last were decent. But the ending was just ripped from thin air. People in this show care way too much about very tiny things "omg my dad slapped me once, maybe I should kill because of it" random.
