One of the best television pilots ever produced
Jim-D10 November 2007
Its very rare that a television pilot hits to dead-on that, when you look back on it, it doesn't feel like the lead-in to a show. "Sally", the first episode of Flight of the Conchords, is such a pilot.

The show deftly intermingles the deadpan humor of Jemaine Clement and Bret MacKenzie into a perfect situation. Jemaine has fallen for Bret's beautiful ex-girlfriend, but soon realizes she has nowhere near as much interest in him as he does in her. The results are hilarious, brilliant, and surprisingly emotional.

The episode also features three original FotC songs, whereas most episodes following the pilot only feature one or two.

Check out the wonderful opener to this amazing show and you'll see why HBO took a chance on this unbelievable New Zealand folk duo. Flight of the Conchords rocks!!!

I'm not crying

The first episode of FOTC is one of the best in the season. Although the humor is still pretty undeveloped and the plot is barely existent, Jemaine and Bret are in top form, and the episode contains three of their best musical numbers - I'm Not Crying, The Distant Future (Robots) and The Most Beautiful Girl (In The Room) - all of which also have fantastic video segments. Jemaine's body language during I'm Not Crying is unbelievably funny, funnier than anything he actually says in the episode. Mel, Dave and Murray are all introduced for the first time, and Rachel Blanchard is gorgeous as Sally, although her character will be stronger in episode 5.

All in all, a great start to a great series.

Sally

The first episode of the Flight of the Conchords aims at then peculiar and the absurd.

The showstoppers being the songs performed by New Zealanders Jemaine Clement and Bret MacKenzie.

Broadcast on HBO, the series was a critical hit in the USA although the humour has more Britishness to it.

Musicians Bret and Jemaine are musicians who are trying to make it big in New York. Their promoter and manager Murray is more of a hindrance.

The first episode sees Jemaine taking a girl call Sally back to his flat after a party. Only Bret is already in the flat and Sally used to date Bret.

The first episode mainly concentrates on Jermaine's inability to realise the awkwardness of the situation with Sally. He even drags Bret to a date with Sally.

It is a lighly amusing episode. There is nothing groundbreaking in the the fish out of water comedy of what looks like two lovable losers doing small gigs and have one fanatic called Mel following them.

It is the songs that elevate it as it captures their feelings or parodies other bands. The song Robots was aimed at Daft Punk and Kraftwerk.
