Terrific series so far

Greetings from Lithuania.

"Doubled Pawns", 3rd episode "The Queen's Gambit" was a very good one. This show in general kinda restored my fate in a good TV series, were characters and character building is at center, were story progresses slowly and craftsmanship is top notch. I don't watch many TV series (don't have time for those) and prefer movies, but "The Queen's Gambit" reminds me of a very long and very good movie, cause everything here is on a top of its game. Great series so far.

Makes chess actually look entertaining
chunkylefunga7 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Good show so far.

They manage to make chess games look fast paced, thrilling, and fun.

Glad to see she's actually mortal, glad they didn't make her just go to fight the Russians and lose out.

Is a bit weird still to have a 24 year old playing a 9 year old but hopefully in the next couple of episodes they'll make her at least 20.

A Feast For Chess Fans
Oktay_Tuna4 November 2020
The first two episodes were more focused on developing Beth's character and creating drama but this episode was quite the opposite. This episode is more focused on the chess while drama is subtle. What I found surprising was, how Beth's character kept developing during a chess game and the two main reasons for that are the acting and the delicacy in the writing. Anya Taylor is incredible as Beth. This episode stood out to me because it was fast-paced early on and continued with the pace. Such a well-made episode overall.

Beth is not the best
evansjoshyr1 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The first time we see Beth loose was inevitable, sad and excellently built up to. We saw throughout the episode Benny outsmart her through casual conversation and as the last two episodes showed her being 'the best' there had to be more of a goal to strive towards. Not exactly an antagonist to hate as we have nothing to dislike about benny, but more a reminder that beth is good but not (yet?) the best.

What hooked me with the last two episodes was how she continued to get better at chess while her addictions and stability as a person deteriorated. Well in this episode, slowly, both deteriorate as we see her struggling with alcohol and chess

Needless to say this episode was very immersive to watch with excellent acting. I can't wait to watch the next one

O Gambito da Rainha (2020)

Series

1st Season.

Episode Three - Peões Duplos.

Beth was disappointed that there actually was a chessboard in her crush's bed, playing chess must have been the same as "let's watch Netflix at my house" for Beth.....

I loved the dynamic between Beth and her mother.....

The guys are arrogant but Beth is also very arrogant....

Another good episode, I believe that based on Beth's reaction, it was Beth's first defeat, she didn't react so well....

Episode three of the first season of the Miniseries O Gambito da Rainha watched on May 12, 2024...

Rating: 10/10.....

I'm not saying that this episode is bad but it's the weakest link so far. I get the idea about winning and losing but how it was built wasn't enough for me. I just wanted more drama and action. This episode was going in straight line and it was just to easy to guess what's going to happen next. I'm not disappointed but two previous episodes were so great that it just raises your expectations for next one.

Warning: Spoilers
I gave 10/10 due to the reaction when Benny pointed Beth what was wrong in her game with Beltik. Lovely reaction. Finally, we have seen that she isn't a robot and can loss sometimes.

Still really not getting it
TheCorniestLemur14 February 2021
For everything that gets better in every episode of this show, something else starts dragging it back down for me.

I think Anya Taylor-Joy is starting to feel a lot more comfortable in the role, and the character is certainly less awkward and confusing now, but what was the point of the party scene? What was the point of the flashback at the start?

I like that she is finally shown to have flaws in her strategies, but whose bloody idea was it to have the US chess champion dress like a post-apocalyptic cowboy straight out of the Fallout universe?

And yeah, the mother's dialogue is still weirdly off-putting.

And I still think it's fairly well directed and shot, but I really can't stress enough just how rampantly predictable and cliche I find this whole show up until now. Nothing happens that I didn't expect just from reading the premise, and it sucks because for as great as the acting and production design is, and as...competently directed as it is, I really can't get past how much I don't care about anything going on.

If anyone hasn't assumed this already, I do plan on finishing this, because it's only 7 episodes, so I might as well, but at this point I'd be surprised if it does manage to turn it around.

Midgame

Warning: Spoilers
This episode settles in for a longer haul. Beth is now a sensation, and travels around the country winning tournaments left, right and centre.

We focus in on the US Open, where she suffers her first defeat at the hands of Benny Watts, played ostentatiously by Thomas Brodie-Sangster (from Nanny McPhee!). Sadly, this defeat is narrated to us after the fact, which cushions the impact it might have had. And as well as pills, we've now added the devil's water. Alcohol becomes an increase source of comfort for Beth.

Anya Taylor-Joy is still sensational - here she shows a brash overconfidence that is both warranted - the male world of chess continually underestimates her - and ultimate folly. When she reaches out and seeks her mother's hand after the defeat, it's a touching concession on her part. And her subtle hand-flex moments with Townes are so adorable! Those two have chemistry.

The mother's dialogue is still too novelistic for my liking. I thought the same about Skyfall. And the high school elements are undercooked. Beth goes to a girls' night, and doesn't fit in? Shocker!
