Cringe
thefox47725 October 2020
I mean, do we expect anything else with Lifetime movies? If you have selected to watch this title you should have a good idea of what you're getting yourself into.

The dialogue/ writing is thoroughly cliche from beginning to end The acting is cringey at best, *especially* the youngest daughter, but we give her a pass because she's cute and still young Lily and Maddie are watchable, especially with Maddie's dimples and baby blue eyes The best friend patrick looks like a wannabe boy band member who was dressed in his dad's old clothes, but, I guess that's the look now. Lastly, what kind of teenager has a room like that? it looks like it was furnished by goodwill in 2000's chic.

As far as the story goes, it delivers in that it entertained me for an hour or so on a sunday afternoon on the first snow of the season.

Just BAD!
zero-27619 March 2020
This is such a bad movie. Nothing is good about the script. It does not carry a message of any kind. The lead actress Cindy Busby got that mean look, and that was the only reason she got this role as a villainess. But her acting is horrible. She can never act as a heroine in different flicks. The kid actors did way better than she. Vivica Fox only had a cameo appearance. Obviously this production wasn't able to hire her for the entire shoot. Her name was used as a bait to lure some moviegoers, which apparently didn't work. That's such a typical tactic for this kind of C-movie. I watched on Amazon Prime for free. I couldn't finish it. Now I want my time back.

Maddie's Glacial Stare
lavatch23 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
In the series of films called "The Wrong _______," actress Vivica A. Fox always has a cameo appearance in which she has some words of wisdom to dispense. In the case of "The Wrong Stepmother," Fox plays the role of high school guidance counselor Ms. Price, who confronts the villainess of the film, Maddie. In no uncertain terms, Ms. Price takes Maddie to school by kicking her off the high school grounds and calling her out for being the charlatan that she is.

Maddie had a rough childhood in which her mother killed her wayward father. Brought up without a family, Maddie has parlayed her looks into a number of attempts at marriage and family. Each case has ending in her pathological outbursts, violence, and death. The audience is alerted early on to Maddie's problem whenever she feels slighted, a glacial stare appears on her face, prior to lashing out at her tormentor.

After changing her name, Maddie hoodwinks Michael after meeting the bereaved widower on an online dating ap. Michael is cozened into thinking Maddie might be welcomed into the family as the stepmother of his two daughters, Lily and Nicole. It turns out that the clueless Michael not only misreads Maddie, but has no sense of the savvy of his daughters, especially Lily.

It is the feisty Lily, who first recognizes signs of derangement in Maddie. Working with Michael's co-worker, Cynthia, and her friend Patrick, Lily gets to the bottom of the Maddie's nefarious past. It is unfortunately only too late for poor Cynthia, as well as Tyler, a member of one of the earlier families that Maddie held hostage. A third victim is Dr. Harris, the psychiatrist who knew too much and suffered the ultimate sacrifice from the unforgiving Maddie.

It is difficult to imagine a more stupid character than Michael, who is so slow in recognizing Maddie's game. The most outrageous moment was when Michael learned that Maddie had edited Lily's college admission's essay, changing the word "mother" to "stepmother," yet still allowed Maddie in his home. It was only due to the quick-thinking Lily that the "perfect family" was not transmogrified into the perfect set of corpses.

I wished I could have given a zero star. After 2 minutes I knew this was a bad movie. Predictable script and bad acting. You'll regret if you watch that stinker.

Listen to your kids single Dads!
phd_travel31 August 2019
Cindy Busby is a good villainess. Prefer her as the baddie than in those Hallmark movies because she can do a a Marcia Cross maniacal look. The way she turns from smiling to evil look is quite funny. She plays a wacko who zeroes in on a widower and his 2 daughters. The elder daughter thinks something isn't quite right about her. Corin Nemec has been in a bunch of Lifetime movies as hapless Dad and he is suitably whipped.

One of the better "wrong" movies.

Cindy Busby was a horrible actress or maybe it was bad directing. Also, Vivica Fox was not starring in this film, more like doing cameos.

I wish Maddie killed more people
fluffchop7 November 2021
Calli Taylor should retire from acting immediately. She was absolutely awful. Cindy Busby was great. The rest of the cast sucked. I enjoyed this movie as it was exactly what it was without any BS. It was great that she killed a bunch of people. It's nice to live out the fantasy of killing a bunch of losers who annoy you. I wish she'd killed that Token sow teacher. She was a mouthy uppity Token. This was a great movie but it needed far more killing, nudity and gore. I wish she had killed the dad and the two daughters. Screw them not accepting her and showing a loving family. Where do they get off acting that way. STabBBBB, stabbbb, staabbbb, kill the bloody lot of them.

Warning: Spoilers
Wish I could give this 0 stars.

This is not worth your time. Seriously, there is nothing redeemable about this movie. It is as if an elementary-aged child wrote it, or worse, someone who has zero interest in coming up with anything of value for humanity. Horribly stupid and lacking in depth. Horrible script, unbelievable plot-line, so many holes. No message, no... anything. The only way any plot point comes to fruition in this movie is if a character is so brain-dead he/she allows it to (like when the girlfriend pulls out a knife, walks a few steps, and stabs the man she is conning into dating her with absolutely zero reaction on his part). This movie is idiotic and an insult to humanity by its sheer existence. 0/10.

2 stars for effort

This is a lifetime movie so not much is expected. I've seen better lifetime movies than this though. It was almost comical even though it's a "thriller". I literally laughed out loud at some of the acting and scenarios. It was entertaining even if the plot was cliché.

I usually find lifetime movies quite entertaining. This one had bad acting from nearly everyone. A very lame script. A basic idea of evil woman getting obsessed but done many many times before and much better. The characterisation was poor. Sorry, this is my first 1 review.

The first thing I notice are the lines in the script is not how people actually speak in real life. Especially the teenagers. Seems like someone in their 40s, who is disconnected from any current social circles, wrote the script. Now. I'm a big fan of Cindy Busby. So she is the saving grace in this for me. The acting is as good as any TV movie. Not terrible but not Hollywood either. It's just the terrible lines that kills it for me! You have been forewarned!

This was so corny.

Warning: Spoilers
Im usually into the bad good Lifetime and Freevee movies. There's always a campy charm to them. This one wasn't it though. I don't mind cliche tropes, if it's good. We've seen the whole "step parent from hell, we gotta get mom or dad to see the truth" plot, but this wasn't executed well. The acting was terrible, from all the adults. Loose ends never tied up, such as Maddie killing Tyler and Cynthia and her ex, why was that never addressed lol. Like...how do you not acknowledge that? They just didn't care and seemed like they were just seeing what would stick. Vivica Fox just shows up every 30 mins to say something to Lily, and that's it. Im assuming she got top billing in the credits cause she's the biggest name attached. You can't get me to watch any more of these The Wrong movies again. First and last time. Grand Opening, Grand Closing.

Worse than bad!
I have a paper bag in my cupboard that is a better actress than this Cindy Busby. The guy who plays the father isn't much better. The kids steal the show. The plot follows a teenage girl trying to convince her clueless dad that the lady he is dating is evil and up to something. Don't waste your time. You will just want to throw a shoe through your TV screen.

Flop
jesst-9158018 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I guess the first thing that bug me to the point of wanting to quit watching the movie was when the stepmother ( I realize that she's not quite the stepmother yet but I'm going to call her thus) is in the backseat of the dad's coworker/family friend. I don't understand why the lady didn't get out of the car when she found out someone had broken into her car and was in the back seat. She continued to sit there while the stepmother continued to get more and more agitated in tone, Yet the woman still sits there in the front seat, presumably thinking, "this person who broke into my car can't possibly harm men right?" The kicker for me was when the stepmother go see cord/strap around the woman's has throat and she grabs and it with both hands, yes, initially I could see most people reacting this way but there was at least an attempt at a solution if she had reached down with her left hand she could have released the seat to the recline position, either hit the woman in the face or just tried to sit up real quick and get out of the car but no, it appears that she does nothing but try we staying to grab the rope and dies. I just kind of feel like this whole scene was insulting an unbelievable.

Another part that irks me is that after the stepmother lies in front of the father about rewriting his daughter's college essay and then ends up admitting that, in fact, she did rewrite it the dad's underwhelming reaction is not believable. I even considered that, perhaps, he's blinded by love and will not fault her, the seriousness of changing the essay which can impact his daughter's future of getting into college should have elicited a stronger reaction from the father, especially the fact that the stepmother lied about it as well. Dumb predictable ending, poor acting, bad plot.

I wish they'd call them the "wrong" movies in the UK
melanie-1192714 November 2022
I wish they wouldn't keep giving them different names in the UK. If they called it "The Wrong Stepmother", I would have known instantly not to watch it. I liked Cindy Busby in Heartland as Ashley but in this she was terrible. And, what was Corin Nemec doing in it? Surely he could have found a better role than this.

And why do they keep giving Vivica A Fox top billing when she only plays a cameo, (and I'm grateful that it was only a cameo)? Her acting is appalling. The too good to be true expressions are so bad they are almost funny, but not quite. She's always the same in every bad movie she does. Estate Agent, Detective, Teacher, but all with the same holier than thou expressions. Yuk. I hope this isn't what we have to expect from any new movie from now on. I'm part way through and I'll probably have to keep watching now. Why, I have no idea. Pretty obvious what the outcome will be.
