We’re just over a week away from Christmas. If you’re already off work or beginning to wind down, Netflix has a few surprises in store over the next seven days with its new releases lineup. Here’s a rundown of everything set to arrive between December 18th and Christmas Eve 2024.

Unsurprisingly, with just five days to go until Christmas, the focus for a lot of people has shifted solely towards festive fare, even if the ongoing effects of the Coronavirus pandemic promise a holiday season unlike any other in living memory, with restrictions being tightened around the world as the recent surge in infections shows no signs of slowing down.

Luckily, there are more than enough streaming services available to provide plenty of content to keep everyone occupied, and while Christmas movies have been dominating the Netflix Top 10 most-watched list all week, heartwarming tales of family and friendship aren’t the only titles being added to the library these days.

With Christmas just around the corner, this weekend is stacked full of great new releases on the various major streaming services. Netflix is adding nearly 30 new titles over the coming days.

We’re now officially about to enter the week before Christmas, and ahead of the festivities, the streaming giant has a few notable releases, holiday-related or otherwise, set to drop. On the whole, it’s a relatively quiet week for Netflix, but there are still a bunch of movies and TV shows that you’ll want to check out.

On Monday, December 14th, three new additions become available – holiday romcom A California Christmas, the second season of animated series Hilda and Tiny Pretty Things, a ballet-themed TV drama based on the bestselling novel of the same name.

Moving on to Tuesday, the batch of fresh titles includes musical docuseries Song Exploder Volume 2, the first two seasons of Teen Mom and The Professor and the Madman, the historical biopic starring Mel Gibson, Sean Penn and Natalie Dormer.

The year is almost over. The Hargreeves kids have saved the world and Beth Harmon has checkmated her last opponent. But in its new releases for December 2020, Netflix still has some tricks up its sleeve.

For starters, Netflix is ending this most curious year with some promising original films. David Fincher’s long-awaited Mank arrives on Dec. 4 to fill us in on the story of Citizen Kane‘s screenwriter. Then on Dec. 11, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and James Corden do their best musical impression with The Prom. Chadwick Boseman’s final film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom debuts on Dec. 18. Then George Clooney rounds out the month with The Midnight Sky on Dec. 23.

But of course, it’s in the original series realm where Netflix does most of its work. The biggest one comes at month’s end this December. The final season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premieres on New Year’s Eve.

Pauly Shore is channeling his inner Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men reenactment. Shore is calling his new series Classic Scenes From Classic Movies and he will go further into some of his favorite movies of all time. Shore can be seen in Guest House, which is currently streaming on VOD and getting good reviews from fans and critics. Some have called the role a return to form and compared it to his iconic comedic roles in Encino Man and Son In Law.

The newest trend in home viewing: the hot title that seems to come out of nowhere. This week it’s “The 2nd,” which jumped to #1 on the AppleTV and GooglePlay movie rental charts. An actioner starring Ryan Phillippe and Casper Van Dien would never register within film Twitter, but that’s not the ruling sensibility of VOD.

This week had a range of alternative offerings, led by the Disney+ debut of “Mulan.” At an estimated $200 million cost, it is by far the most expensive feature film to skip domestic theaters for Premium VOD. This is also the second week of “Bill & Ted Face the Music” (United Artists), as well as first for “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” the start of Netflix’s fall awards-intended original releases. All that comes as “Tenet” (Warner Bros.) began its muted run in the U.S. as it tries to bring struggling theaters into recovery.

Each weekend brings the latest batch of new releases to VOD and the various streaming services competing for both the eyes and wallets of viewers around the world, and the latest offering serves up a more eclectic bunch of titles than usual. One which covers everything from a $200 million epic and a surrealist horror to the usual mix of bargain basement genre flicks and even the return to our screens of Pauly Shore.

The most high-profile release of the weekend is obviously Disney’s Mulan, which has finally arrived six months behind schedule and exclusively to the Mouse House’s streaming platform. Although the calls to boycott the latest live-action remake have resurfaced, there’s no way that Niki Caro’s historical actioner turns out to be anything other than a huge money-spinner, especially when reviews have largely been very positive.

Guest House is a new comedy that feels like a real throwback to the likes of Road Trip and American Pie, depicting a rivalry between a home-owner, and a nightmare neighbour. We had the pleasure in speaking to the former, the affable comedian Mike Castle, who talks about his cinematic feud with Pauly Shore.

Castle spoke to us about playing the straight guy, and how it was shooting scenes with the likes of Shore, Steve-o and Billy Zane. He also tells us whether he has ever had a feud in real life, and talks about one day collaborating properly with his wife, the talented actress Lauren Lapkus. We also ask him about Brews Brothers, and his thoughts on the series sadly not being renewed.

A new trailer has been launched for James Webber’s feature film debut ‘Sorority’ which heads to festivals later in the year.

The film tells the story of two sisters, Harriet (Sophie Kennedy Clark) and Sarah (Emily Haigh). When both women find themselves heading in opposite directions in life, they must first come to terms with their tragic past and reconcile with their estranged mother Val (Kate Dickie), before looking ahead to a brighter future.

Lionsgate has renewed its longstanding partnership with Grindstone Entertainment Group and entered new multiyear agreements with Grindstone President and CEO Barry Brooker and principal Stan Wertlieb.

The deal, announced Tuesday by Lionsgate Worldwide Home Entertainment President Ron Schwartz, extends a 12-year relationship between Lionsgate and Grindstone, which has been delivering feature films for the multiplatform streaming space.

The new pact encompasses a slate of upcoming releases including the action thriller “Force of Nature” starring Mel Gibson, Emile Hirsch and Kate Bosworth, the Megan Fox-led thriller “Rogue,” comedy “Guest House” with Pauly Shore and Gerard Butler’s action film “Hair of the Dog.”

Grindstone, led by President and CEO Barry Brooker and principal Stan Wertlieb, has delivered a slate of star-driven features, prime for today’s fast-growing multiplatform streaming space. The new agreement includes such movies as the action thriller Force of Nature, starring Mel Gibson, Emile Hirsch and Kate Bosworth, the thriller Rogue, starring Transformers’ Megan Fox, the comedy Guest House, starring Pauly Shore, Aimee Teegarden, Mike Castle and Steve-o, and the thriller Hair of the Dog, starring Olympus Has Fallen’s Gerard Butler. During Grindstone’s run with Lionsgate, and counting their future projects, the label has amassed a 500-title catalog. The Grindstone management team of Brooker and Wertlieb have worked together for over 20 years.
