1st pinoy zombie film
smilejakarta11 February 2020
Give it a fair rating for being first ... but it was not as good as i thought it would be, story line is not unique, and the setting should have variety

For a zombie movie, it's about average.
awfulketchup23 November 2020
Let's face it, there are countless of zombie movies at this point, what made this one stick out more than usual was the somewhat likeable characters and well shot moments followed by some entertaining scenes sprinkled all over the movie to keep you invested in the survivors. With that aside, what stops this movie from being higher than 6 is the many faults that can be seen in zombie movies that just don't know what to do with the characters that were established, I mean without spoiling the movie of course, there are moments that feel rushed, contrived and even tone deaf of what genre it wants to be, what I mean by tone deaf is that they'll have comedic moments at times which would normally be there to break tension and make the audience laugh, but these jokes are so self aware that I mistook it for a comedy when it's trying to be so super serious 90% of the runtime.

Overall, I'm very hard to please in regards to zombie flicks, but this did tick a lot of boxes to make me have a fun time. but I wouldn't revisit it anytime soon.

wkwong-8078514 December 2020
Although compare with the zombie movie of others well-developed countries, Philippines's Movie still have more to develop and change, but Block Z is one of the Philippines's Movie I have seen that is good movie. At the end of the movie, It make me feel the story not ended, Would Block Z will have part 2? If it have, I am looking forward to watch that.

Trying very hard to copy 28 weeks later
mostjaypee25 February 2020
Really? A zombie will pause, do a zombie growl, then go attack after? Typical pinoys. Trying very hard to copy 28 weeks later but fails miserably. Train to busan was original with its execution and story. This one is a class a copycat

A far cry from Hollywood zombie films. But it is a 6 for me because it shows promise.

Untalented director
cindygraceh23 January 2021
Pay attention to details. They even added the last scene for a chance of sequel? Lolz..no creativity. I'll give a three for the effort. I just feel bad for the future of the filipino film industry.

First Mainstream Zombie Movie of the Philippines
tasigabriel5 April 2020
I've Watched Block Z many times in the cinema and on TV, Thanks to KBO.A pay-per-view service of ABS-CBN.The Soundtrack of the Fight Scenes Were Good. The Sacrifice of some of the cast was remarkable. Joshua's Character is Good also Julia's Character is good too.Julia also showed girl power in this film.Which is Excellent.

Barely watchable, but far from good

Barely watchable, but far from good. It reminds me of those old horror films when people do the stupidest things.

A thrilling and a must-watch movie!!
franzjosephl3 April 2020
Everyone is bashing this movie because the movie has no originality. But for me, this movie is absolutely excellent!! Red is just a great Director and a great Story Writer! The cinematography is perfect and The casts' acting skills are absolutely perfect. My rating of this movie is 8 because there are questions that are unanswered like "Where did the human bite came from?" and "What happened to Bebeth?". The ending has a potential that there will be a part 2 of this movie. For me, this movie is thrilling and fun and this is a must-watch movie!

Warning: Spoilers
This movie deserves more recognition, average zombie movie but it's so good and worth it to watch. Bitin yung ending and there is some plot holes, so that is why this movie needs a sequel or part 2. Tagal ko na tung pinanoud kaya please lang sana mabigyan ito ng ka sunod na movie. I love how the characters are written are and how they did everything to survive so, the only character that made my head boiled is gelo. Of course di maiiwasan na may ganong character sa zombie movie but it's great how he deliver his character, ang galing umarte. Same with his other actor/treas especially the four main leads.

An average zombie movie
I found this movie to be an average zombie movie. The story is standard for a zombie movie that goes with a group of survivors trying to survive against zombies while going to a current location. It's pretty predictable throughout and doesn't bring anything new to the genre. The movie itself is enjoyable with the action scenes in it with the characters fighting against the zombies and is suspenseful throughout. But the movie is repetitive with the characters going to a current location and one of them getting killed by the zombies. The ending is fine, but nothing too interesting to say anything about.

A big thriller on a small budget!
rianueva2 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
In complete honesty, this movie is nowhere near perfect in comparison to 28 Days Later or Train to Busan but it is important to note that those films had a way higher budget than Block Z had. Train to Busan had a budget of $8.5 million while Block Z had 33 million PHP or less than 1 million American dollars. For a film with $7 million less, it's pretty spectacular.

Once finishing the movie, you realize that there was purpose in every line and scene. Even from the very beginning where PJ is in the car with her dad, almost blaming him for the death of her mother, contributed to her development where she later went back to save him. The innocence of the first university scene makes the later acts more impactful. It starts out with the innocent college students dreaming of getting married, taking selfies to post on social media, even planning the next hangout. In a blink of an eye, all their daily lives were changed, some even ended.

Watching the second time, I thought it was interesting how the fate of PJ was spoiled in the first fifteen minutes in health class where she explains that some are born immune to a certain virus, calling it "genetic lottery". She and her father both find out they are immune after failing to turn into zombies after they were bitten. Due to the intense and fast pace thrill, you forget that line and end up being surprised when the fate of PJ and Mario (her father) is revealed.

This movie is more of a thriller than a horror film. Horror films leave you closing one eye while this movie will leave you staring at the screen on the edge of your seat. The fast pacing made the movie much more intense. It's definitely worth watching if you love thrillers like I do.

Let's talk about the ending. Could've they made it better? Yeah maybe. Was it terrible? Far from it. It leaves you on a cliffhanger that hints on a possible sequel. There's several plot holes that would have to be answered such as: What happened to Bebeth? Who is the female raider? How the hell did Lucas survive after jumping off a building?

Overall, there's no doubt that this is another pride of the Philippines. It's a breath of fresh air from the usual Rom-Coms. Even for non-Tagalog speakers, it's an easy language to follow along to because of the use of English embedded into the Tagalog script. It's a fun watch and will satisfy any kind of movie-watcher.

Enjoyed It!
marleyy-7134314 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There was a local screening here in my town and i decided to check it out because i heard it was a zombie movie, and boy it did surprise me, i liked how they laid out the virus spreading around the school and how they build up the suspense at that part. But what happened to the police woman?? and who was that girl that appeared in the end? but otherwise it was really good and i'd like to see it again.

Saw the screening
leyluho13 March 2020
There are screenings here at CA and there were alot of pilipinos there, but the poster outside the theater caught my attention so i decided to check it out and called a friend over, and glad we did enjoy it! i must say asian movies are really good at making these kinds of films. It was really good like korea's Train to Busan and the wailing. Worth the money.

Theres a dog who cant figure out what to eat for a snack in this. Dog is shown wearing a business suit (because of the mainframe shift) (couple kids found and flipped some hidden switches). Anyway, the dog opens some aluminum foil wrapping which reveals a single berry. Camera zooms in on the berry for 99.9% of the films running time. I like when people who want nothing go to work like this. You might offer them a good pillow and in response they'd pull out a small model of their body thats missing a hand.

Philippine Cinema's Biggest Improvement
gizmothecatmcpe-1906730 January 2020
Block Z is a visceral experience all throughout. It is not the best but it is something new to watch out for on how i felt proud for this take on a genre. The director proves once again how masterful he is with building tension within a scene and stacking one moment on top of the other like his other films Birdshot, Dead Kids and Eerie. A big step and improvement in the right direction for genre films in our country and it is worth checking out, first in Philippine cinema to encounter such a new big film to a audience

Solid film, entertaining, familiar thematic material but not lazy filmmaking
chippos14 March 2021
Look, this is definitely not a groundbreaking zombie movie. If that's what you're looking for, you're missing the point. What some of the harsh reviews seem to ignore are all of the references to other horror films (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days Later, Resident Evil, to name a few- I even saw a scene that was taken from Wrong Turn). This is clearly a director who knows and respects the horror genre. As an avid horror fan, I truly appreciate it when directors pay homage to others that have come before them. Are there plot holes? Yes, and the same can be said for pretty much all films. Is the script lacking in some places? Maybe, but it didn't detract from overall impact of the film...and I don't tend to watch action/horror for the non-stop, clever repartee. Was it an original take on the zombie theme? No. But at least this movie doesn't insist upon itself like so many of the hackneyed, pretentious features that are littering the mainstream movie industry. In conclusion, Block Z is an entertaining film that I would watch again.

More than enough
bylnjhn10 December 2020
I've been a long time lurker of IMDB and this is my first ever movie review on this site.

Whenever i planned to watch any movie, this is the place to go to check all the reviews. If i see any negative comment for the movie that causes me to hold back and hesitate. More than 50% of it i didn't watch because of these "so called movie critics". What i realized is every person has a different appetite for everything, a 10 for you is maybe a 5 for me, or maybe a 10 for me is too high for your standards.

Nevertheless i enjoyed the Movie, regardless of the negative review (which i read after watching it fortunately) Mikhail Redd will be one of the best Philippine directors alive. And if given a chance i'd be glad to work with him in the future for some story concepts and idea.

Finally a Director with no non-sense mentality and doing his craft for the sake of all the "Real Movie Enthusiast"
