Even guests at The White Lotus are cost-conscious these days.
When “The White Lotus” Season 3 chose Thailand over Japan, it received millions of dollars in filming incentives, Japanese producer Georgina Pope said at the Tokyo Film Festival.
Pope recalled during her MPA keynote address having gone on a scouting trip with what she referred to as a “high profile showrunner” who was interested in shooting in Japan. Producers and studio executives were also in tow; Deadline later confirmed the showrunner to be “The White Lotus” creator Mike White.
“It was a great scout. We saw some absolutely stunning locations all over Honshu. The showrunner loved it all, and I was feeling very confident that I had it all in the bag,” Pope said.
Ultimately, Thailand’s filming incentives wooed White away.

The Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy, is back in full force in 2023, celebrating its 25th anniversary edition from April 21–29.
A key component of the celebrations will be a focus on the Asian films of the 1980s. “We have never programmed these films, nor put together this kind of program before,” says Thomas Bertacche, the Feff’s co-head. “But these were the films and directors that inspired us to shape Udine into the festival that it is today.”
Pitching the historical lineup as “hidden treasures,” the selection is expected to include early works by Japan’s Kurosawa Kiyoshi, Thailand’s Nonzee Nimibutr and South Korea’s Jan Sung-woo.
Roger Garcia, former executive director of the Hong Kong International Film Festival, is set to curate a section on Leung Po-chi, the 83-year-old British-Hong Kong director who made the leap from commercials to TV and into film. Leung was at the...

Avani Prashanth, still missing a lot of putts, added 1-under 71 to her first round 73 and is now tied 19th.
While Nishna is 1-under 143 for two rounds, Avani is even par 144.
While Nishna and Avani made the cut, the other four Indian girls, Mannat Brar (76-77), Anika Varma (74-81), Lavanya Jadon (78-79) and Vidhatri Urs (77-81) missed the cut, which fell at 6-over 150.
Thailand’s Eila Galitsky and Sophie Han of Hong Kong, China, joined overnight leader Minsol Kim of Korea on top of the leaderboard at the halfway stage.

Bollywood is the flag-bearer of South Asian Cinema to the global audience. Bollywood produces films in Hindi language, with its signature song and dance numbers with the aesthetic values of Bhabas and Rasas evident in Bharat Muni’s Natyashastra (see Massey 1992). The industry evolved in the late-1990s with the films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hay (1998), Taal (1998) and many more. These films are produced in a liberalized and free market, with hybrid cultural values of both Indianness and global, by targeting NRIs as potential spectators (and satisfying the local audience too). The storyline often travels to European or American cities, however the characters always remain Indian by heart. In 1998, the government declared to give movies an ‘industry status’, and foreign equity was allowed up to 100 in production and distribution in 1999. Rajadhaykhsya (2003) describes this whole process as ‘the Bollywoodization’ and he observed that the...

Lizzo, a three-time Grammy winner, is entering a new awards season campaign — but this time, she’s a TV star.
In March, reality competition series “Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls” debuted on Amazon Prime Video. The project, now a contender in the Emmys reality race, was the first to come out of the Lizzo’s first look deal with Amazon Studios, and follows the singer as she puts 13 plus-sized dancers through a series of boot camp challenges in hopes of getting them ready to join her on tour.
“Watch Out for the Big Grrrls” sets itself apart from other competition series from the start. Rather than focusing on dance training alone, Lizzo provides the contestants with personal enrichment opportunities with trained professionals in disciplines like sensual movement and photography. And she doesn’t take any joy in eliminating girls from the process. Instead of regular elimination trials, she...

Director Erik Matti takes a closer look at the gritty reality of the Philippines in “On the Job: The Missing 8.” Inspired by true events and presented in Venice’s main competition, it shows a corrupt journalist seeking justice for his missing colleagues, as well as crime syndicates that temporarily release prison inmates to carry out political assassinations.

Tony Leung’s portrayal of Wenwu takes the MCU villain to a whole new level in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the latest feature film in the franchise. Wenwu is complex and textured as written, but veteran actor Leung gives the role such gravity, a level of depth that can only be reached by one of the world’s leading performers. Wenwu easily tops the ranks of MCU’s best villains, but it wasn’t always clear Shang-Chi‘s villain would be a hit. Originally in the comics, Shang-Chi’s father was the xenophobic Asian caricature Fu Manchu. Later, Fu was replaced with the Mandarin, another character that relied on racist stereotypes, so when the Mandarin was announced as the next MCU villain, it aroused concern. However, Iron Man 3 wisely spun the Mandarin to their advantage. Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley) became the Mandarin, and the character...

PlayStation owners will have their first chance to try Call of Duty: Vanguard during a public alpha test this weekend that’s open to PS5 and PS4 players. The alpha will focus on Champion Hill, a new multiplayer mode that’s described as “a mix of battle royale plus Gunfight with progression happening between each of the rounds.”
Champion Hill, which can be played as 2v2 or 3v3, sees teams compete in tournament-style deathmatch rounds on a map split up into five sections, including a Buy Station Area at the center where players can upgrade their loadouts, buy Perks, new weapons and equipment, and more. But you’ll need to take out your enemies to earn the cash to be these goodies. The goal of the mode is to deplete every other team’s life count to zero and becpome the last squad standing.
This is definitely an interesting experiment for Call of Duty.

Monday is the start of five days of voting to determine shortlists in the nine Oscar categories that narrow down the field before the start of nomination balloting. In the Best Documentary Feature and Best International Feature Film categories, 238 and 93 films, respectively, will be reduced to 15 semifinalists.
In each of those categories, voters must see a minimum number of entries, drawn from a “required viewing” list sent to each member, in order to vote. Documentary voters must see more than 30 films, international voters must see 12. Shortlists in all categories will be announced on Feb. 9.
Here are our thoughts on these contests; on Tuesday, we’ll look at the below-the-line categories that also use shortlists.

The disability advocacy group is presenting five conversations under the umbrella title the Accessibility & Inclusion Lab; two of the events are in collaboration with Film Independent.
A goal is to encourage authentic representation of disabled people on screen, and to help change how audiences view people with disabilities. Another goal is to give filmmakers the tools to make films more accessible, both for disabled crew members and for audiences.
According to Nielsen, the disability market influences more than a trillion dollars in disposable income. However, with one-in-five people in the U.S. having a disability, there is a startling lack of representation – just 2.3% of characters in the 100 top-grossing films of 2019 and 8% in family films.

Although this year’s Middle Eastern/North African Oscar submissions have yet to generate a strong buzz, there are titles among the 10 films that could be contenders for the international feature short list.
Chief among them is “Sun Children” from veteran Iranian helmer Majid Majidi, whose 1997 “Children of Heaven” landed a foreign-language film nomination. This gripping drama about exploited urban street kids is cast with charismatic, non-pro performers and earned an acting award at the Venice fest for its resilient young protagonist. Strand Films will release.
A possible dark horse is “Broken Keys,” the feature debut of Lebanese multi-hyphenate Jimmy Keyrouz. It marks an expansion of his 2016 Student Academy Award-winner “Nocturne in Black” about a musician in a Syrian town controlled by Isis. Sporting the Cannes Label, this tense drama, with a score by Keyrouz’s famous compatriot Gabriel Yared, shares the combination of real-life crisis and sweeping emotion that characterizes some past nominees.

While American audiences got to know Shira Haas for her breakout role in the Netflix limited series “Unorthodox,” Haas says she was truly moved to tears while reading the screenplay for her latest film “Asia,” which not only won Haas an Israeli Oscar but also a Best Actress prize from the Tribeca Film Festival.
In “Asia,” Haas plays a teenage girl slowly dying from a degenerative motor disease, and the film is named for her character’s mother as the two learn to grapple with death and acceptance. Haas described having an “urge” to tell the story and felt a “spiritual connection” with everyone involved.
“In real life I’m not such an easy crier, and I just couldn’t stop the tears. Also because I really felt a great honor to play such a great complex and amazing character,” Haas told Steve Pond for TheWrap’s Awards and International Screening Series.

Actress Asia Argento has accused filmmaker Rob Cohen of drugging and sexually assaulting her in 2002 during the filming of the Vin Diesel action movie “xXx.” Argento revealed the new accusations during an interview with Italian media while promoting her autobiography “Anatomy of a Wild Heart,” which comes out this week and covers the accusations.
“It’s the first time I’m talking about Cohen,” Argento told Milan newspaper Il Corriere della Sera. “He abused me, making me drink Ghb, he had a bottle of it,” she said.
Ghb is a fast-acting anesthetic that has become known as a regularly used date rape drug. Argento said that after unknowingly taking the drug, she woke up naked in Cohen’s bed, unsure of what had happened to her.

This story about Shira Haas and “Asia” first appeared in the International Film Issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
She has had a very unusual pandemic. At a time when Shira Haas has mostly been at her home in Tel Aviv, the 25-year-old Israeli actress has become an Emmy nominee and something of a star for her role in “Unorthodox,” the Netflix series that became a lockdown sensation. And while that was happening, she also won the best actress award at the Tribeca Film Festival — the festival didn’t take place but the jury still watched films and voted — for her role in Ruthy Pribar’s delicate but wrenching “Asia,” in which Haas plays a teenage girl trying desperately to have a normal adolescence despite a degenerative motor disease.
“Asia” swept Israel’s Ophir Awards to become that country’s Oscar entry, another happy 2020 event that Haas mostly enjoyed in isolation.

Certain films aren’t made for elevator pitches. “Arthouse ‘Gilmore Girls’ meets ‘The Fault in Our Stars'” would be one way to describe the array of familiar elements in “Asia,” while erasing any hint of the rare delicacy and emotional acuity with which Israeli writer-director Ruthy Pribar assembles them. In her unassumingly lovely debut feature, Pribar tackles thorny mother-daughter relations, terminal disease anguish and two generations of frustrated sexual yearning in a trim 85 minutes, without once shortcutting to easy sentimentality or high-pitched melodrama. She’s not alone on that balance beam, of course: A pair of exquisitely pitched, mutually reflective performances by Alena Yiv and Shira Haas (fresh from her Emmy-nominated breakout turn in Netflix’s “Unorthodox”) help this low-key, grownup family drama stick fast in the head and heart.

Since, for the past few years we have intensified our coverage of films that do not belong in the S/Se Asia or the Asean countries, we decided, for the first time, to have a list that deals with movies from outside these regions, essentially including movies from all Asian countries that do not belong in the aforementioned three. The list is probably the most diverse, as it includes films from Israel, Kazakhstan, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, Palaistine and Kurdistan, although, expectedly, being one of the largest film industries in Asia, Iran has the lion’s share.
Without further ado, here are the best West Asian films of 2020, in reverse order. Some films may have premiered in 2019, but since they mostly circulated in 2020, we decided to include them.

Even in a year in which worldwide theater closings made releasing movies difficult if not impossible, the Oscars race for Best International Feature Film is close to achieving a record number of entries.
With the deadline for submissions passing on Dec. 1, 90 countries have either announced their Oscar submissions or had those submissions reported in the press. One additional film, from Saudi Arabia, is in the Academy screening room devoted to the category.
The 91 entries would be one shy of the record 92 films that competed in what was then called the Best Foreign Language Film category in 2017.
But we don’t know if additional countries beyond those 91 have submitted films but not made their selections public. Typically, a handful of countries fall into that category; nations that have entered films in at least four of the last five years but have not announced submissions this year are Afghanistan, Australia, Cambodia, Nepal and the United Kingdom.
With the deadline for submissions passing on Dec. 1, 90 countries have either announced their Oscar submissions or had those submissions reported in the press. One additional film, from Saudi Arabia, is in the Academy screening room devoted to the category.

In many dramas there is a certain notion to capture the development of a person who is weak, emotionally or physically, into someone who becomes stronger and eventually manages to leave behind whatever struggle it is that is holding them back. While this kind of tale is quite encouraging and will be the foundation of many productions in the future, it denies the paradoxical concept of the strength that lies in showing weakness and admitting helplessness since this is, after all, also a very human experience. It is precisely this idea which represents one of the core themes of Israeli director Ruthy Pribar’s feature debut Asia, which has already been honored with the Nora Ephron Award upon its screening at Tribeca Film Festival. The competition section of China’s Pingyao Intl. Film Festival on Friday awarded top prizes to Russia’s Philipp Yuryev, Serbia’s Ivan Ilkic, and Chinese directors Li Dongmei and Wang Jing. The films of the first three helmers debuted at the Venice Film Festival’s independently run Venice Days section in September, where Yuryev’s “The Whaler Boy” won the top prize.
Screenings are still ongoing at the Chinese festival in the central Chinese province of Shanxi, co-founded by Chinese helmer Jia Zhangke and former Venice head Marco Muller, whose full line-up of 63 films runs from Oct. 10 to 19. Few international guests attended, as China continues to limit travel into the country and requires a 14-day quarantine period for new arrivals.
The Robert Rossellini Awards are a set of prizes given to the dozen international directorial debuts or second features in the “Crouching Tigers” section.
