“Ain’t nobody/Loves me better/Makes me happy/Makes me feel this way,” Clarkson belted out while backed by My Band Y’all. When looking back at her legacy, Khan told Rolling Stone in a December 2023 interview that she “never,...

Hovvdy are back, and have announced a new self-titled double album and a string of 2024 UK/Europe tour dates. The band also shared the album’s latest single, “Forever.”
Due out April 26th via Arts & Crafts, Hovvdy will be the Austin, Texas indie duo’s fifth full-length studio album, following 2021’s True Love. Spanning 19 tracks, the new album was co-produced by Hovvdy’s Charlie Martin and Will Taylor, along with Andrew Sarlo and Bennett Littlejohn.
Speaking about Hovvdy, Martin cited themes of family and empathy as influential factors. “It’s a full circle, because lots of my songs, in adulthood, deal with looking back and seeing your parents as just individuals struggling through life — and trying to have more empathy or understanding,” he said in a statement. “And now Will is diving in from the opposite side as a new parent, grappling with all that.”

Sweetening the deal of every re-recorded Taylor Swift album is the promise of hearing new vault tracks. These previously unreleased songs, which were written during their assigned eras, flesh out the diaristic narratives Swift laid out on their respective albums — and they also give us a glimpse into how her own songwriting has been changing and growing.
1989 (Taylor’s Version) is no different. In fact, these may be her best vault tracks yet, showcasing a fearless Swift charging into her pop sound at full-force with the help of her then-new collaborative partner Jack Antonoff.

Taylor Swift is taking us back to 1989. Today brings the release of 1989 (Taylor’s Version), a newly re-recorded version of her beloved 2014 album. Stream it below, and read our analysis of the album here.
Widely considered to be Swift’s first pure pop album, one could easily point to 1989 as the album that made Taylor the omnipresent, record-breaking star she is today. It features the hits “Shake It Off,” “Bad Blood,” “Blank Space,” and “Style,” as well as fan-favorites “Out of the Woods” and “New Romantics.”
In addition to updated recordings of those classics, 1989 (Taylor’s Version) features the Vault tracks “Slut!”, “Say Don’t Go,” “Now That We Don’t Talk,” “Suburban Legends,” and “Is It Over Now?,” as well as a sixth previously unreleased song called “Sweeter Than Fiction” that’s only available through Target. The record is also available on cassette, light blue vinyl, and multiple colored CDs.

R.I.P. Quibi, again.
It seems even the Roku Channel is not free from The Great Streaming Purge of the 2020s. According to a report in Variety, over 35 notable Roku Original shows are to be removed from the streaming service sometime in the near future. This comes after multiple other services have removed shows and movies, many of them high-profile releases, from their feeds in order to cut costs. HBO Max — now merely Max — infamously removed a lot of their original films back in August of 2022, while multiple TV shows and movies were taken off of Hulu and Disney+ in May of 2023 for similar reasons. One might assume that a free, ad-supported service like the Roku Channel would be free from the caprices of the streaming market, but that is not so. The line of Roku Originals will be brought to an end.
Roku Originals, some may recall, were not Roku originals.

The Amazon Prime Video series “The Summer I Turned Pretty” has made a splash with its loaded soundtrack. By now it is safe to say that “The Summer I Turned Pretty” and Taylor Swift go hand in hand because author and show creator Jenny Han has made it so.
The first season had five Swift songs ranging from her “Lover” album to “Fearless (Taylor’s Version),” and the Season 1 trailer debuted “This Love (Taylor’s Version)” from the yet-to-be-released re-recorded “1989.” Season 2’s teaser was set to “August,” and then the official trailer debuted “Back to December (Taylor’s Version)” shortly before “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” was released July 7. Only time will tell if Season 2 ties Season 1 for how many Taylor Swift songs it contains.

At the rate that Hollywood is going, we’re likely only a few years away from an unnecessary sequel or remake of John Hughes’ classic The Breakfast Club. When it comes time to film the final scene, the original recording of Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” can be swapped out for the rendition Kelly Clarkson delivered on the Kelly Clarkson Show this week.
Clarkson and her band Y’all ran through the popular Eighties single with plenty of synths. It’s her fourth Kellyoke pick of the...

Like everyone else, Kelly Clarkson got tired of waiting for Taylor Swift to drop the 1989 (Taylor’s Version) re-recordings, so she decided to take matters into her own hands. During the latest Kellyoke segment on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the singer delivered a stunning rendition of “Clean,” the closing track on the original version of the album.
Joined by her band Y’all and one singular, harmony-providing backing vocalist, Clarkson took on the story of “Clean” as if it were her own. Running through the opening verse and doubling up on the chorus,...

During each night of his solo acoustic tour, John Mayer switches up the setlist. This past weekend during a show in Sacramento, California, the singer and songwriter reached back a decade and performed “Paper Doll” from his 2013 album Paradise Valley. Reflecting on the record’s tone, which has long been rumored to have been written about Taylor Swift, Mayer expressed some regrets about how the song was received.
“I wonder if people don’t like it because it sounds a little pissed off,” Mayer mused on stage. “I don’t...

It doesn’t feel like the audience gets to see a lot of Adrien Brody these days, but he’s still around, and he’s still doing his thing. In Clean, he gets to play a tortured individual with a dark past that is on the road to redemption but is destined to get sucked back into the type of life that he tried to leave behind. Living his days as a garbage man that salvages and sells what he can, Clean is the kind of guy that looks out for others since he looks out for a young woman in the neighborhood,

Some people look back at their high school years with a certain wistfulness; others couldn’t be paid to revisit that particular stretch of adolescence… thank you very much.
Filmmaker Jennifer Kaytin Robinson falls squarely in the latter category, though she admits she’s at least partially to blame for the bad memories.
“I was a bitch,” she says with the kind of laugh that only comes after years of self-reflection. “I was unhappy, so that came out by me paying that unhappiness forward. I love my family… but they can only do so much.”
Robinson, now in her thirties, is happily revisiting her teen angst in “Do Revenge,” a Hitchcockian high-school comedy that debuts Sept. 16 on Netflix. It’s a welcome return to the YA genre for Robinson, who most recently co-wrote this summer’s blockbuster “Thor: Love and Thunder” with Taika Waititi. She first made her mark on...

Director Lachlan Mcleod follows Australian Sandra Pankhurst and her team of ‘trauma cleaners’: those who scrub crime scenes, suicide sites and clear out hoarders’ homes

“People meet me and they go, you’re real! They can’t believe it,” says Sandra Pankhurst, the subject of Lachlan Mcleod’s second documentary, Clean.
Pankhurst is a person who has led many lives within a life: adopted as a child, then severely abused by her adoptive parents; emerging from a failed marriage and coming out as a transgender woman in the 1980s; working as a drag queen and sex worker; and eventually starting her own cleaning business in the 1990s. Late in her life (she died in 2021), Pankhurst became a public figure after the publication of Sarah Krasnostein’s expansive, heartfelt and award-winning book about her life and line of work, The Trauma Cleaner, in...

Often a re-release is granted to some long-cherished classic or cult sensation. In the case of Lodge Kerrigan’s Keane, which played the festival circuit through 2004 and received a small theatrical run in 2005, a much-underseen film has been given another chance to find the audience it’s long deserved with a brand new 4K restoration courtesy Grasshopper Film.
The titular Keane (played impressively by Damian Lewis pre-Homeland and Billions) a mid-30s man suffering from schizophrenia and on a fruitless quest to find his lost daughter through the purgatory of New York City. Coming across Lynn (Amy Ryan) and her young daughter Kira (Abigail Breslin) living in precarity in the same motel, and soon finding himself taking care of the young girl while her mother tends to waiting tables. Keane begins to see her as potentially his lost daughter, which leads him down a dark path of recreating and revisiting his past.

Clean
A pared down, gritty action thriller set to make quite an impact on audiences, Clean is notable as the writing début of its star, Adrien Brody. Its other writer, and director, is Paul Solet, whose first feature, Grace, wowed audiences in 2009 and who has been building up his reputation ever since. The two met on the set of Bullet Head in 2017, and it’s with that film that I began my recent conversation with Paul, in which he discussed his partnership with Adrien, what they hoped to achieve with Clean, and the technical challenges involved in bringing it to the screen.
“We really got along well on Bullet Head and we have very similar sensibilities and tastes,” he says of his collaborator. “We definitely knew right away we wanted to do something else together, so we started spitballing. Adrien had had a notion for a long time...

Glenn Fleshler is a joy to watch as a bad guy in Brody’s otherwise disappointing, don’t-mess-with-the-quiet-type drama
While Paul Solet is credited as the director, producer and co-screenwriter for this gloomy, Taxi Driver-style tale about a lonely man with lots of firearms, the film’s star Adrien Brody was the other screenwriter, another one of its producers, and even the composer of the deep register, synth-based score. So if that doesn’t make this a vanity project for Brody, then it’s at least a bit of a folie à deux, given the end result is so pretentious and derivative.
At least there are a few redeeming features in the supporting cast, including, in reverse order of redemptiveness, the always welcome RZA as a gun-shop owner, Chandler DuPont as an ingenue street kid called Dianda who inspires protectiveness in Brody’s protagonist, and Hollywood’s favourite balding bad guy,...

The Melbourne Film Festival will return to cinemas after two turbulent years caused by Covid-related disruptions – the city endured one of the world’s longest pandemic lockdowns – and will run Aug 4-21, 2022. It will open with powerful Australian-u.K.-Serbian-made first film “Of An Age,” by renown shorts director Goran Stolevski. Festival organizers pitch it as “a heart-meltingly tender, quintessentially Melbourne queer coming-of-age tale that will make you swoon from beginning to end.” The Mff is scheduled to close with another Aussie title, documentary “Clean.” Directed by Lachlan McLeod, it examines how so-called trauma cleaner Sandra Pankhurst responded to an unseen world with radical kindness. The festival has also teased some of the titles that it will program between the gala bookend events. They include: Kamila Andini’s “Yuni”; Ari Folman’s “Where Is Anne Frank”; John Hughes and Tom Zubrycki’s “Senses of Cinema”; Ulrich Seidl’s...

“Encanto” succeeded with the notion of “no villain, except generational trauma,” and Disney keeps that idea going with the delightful “Turning Red” (Walt Disney Home Entertainment), a young woman’s coming-of-age story that’s a metaphor for any number of growing-up issues, including that moment when the “model” child begins to chafe at parental domination. Matt Blank, interim CEO of AMC Networks, said the company has “no plans” for ad-supported tiers of its family of targeted streaming services including Shudder, Acorn TV and AMC+.
“If the business changes,” he said during the company’s quarterly conference call with Wall Street analysts, “we believe we do have the opportunity to be nimble and adapt.”
In its first-quarter report, AMC Networks said it reached 9.5 million total streaming subscribers by the end of the quarter on March 31, up a half-million from the previous quarter.
Blank did not mention Netflix by name, but he was asked about AMC Networks exploring cheaper, ad-supported versions of its services, which are on track to reach internal forecasts for 20 million to 25 million cumulative subscribers by 2025. That’s the playbook followed by HBO Max and Disney+, and Netflix Co-CEO Reed Hastings dropped the bombshell last month that the company would finally pursue advertising after steadfastly rejecting it for years.

French filmmaker Olivier Assayas has spent has spent decades crafting unforgettable stories and establishing himself as a major international talent well worth following. His collaborations with actor Kristen Stewart on "Clouds of Sils Maria" and especially 2016's "Personal Shopper" did a lot to pave the way for the actor's Best Actress nomination in last year's "Spencer" (but we still maintain that she should've won that award handily!). Meanwhile, earlier efforts such as "Sentimental Destinies," "Demonlover," and "Clean" helped turn him into a regular presence at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival year in and year out. There is a certain satisfaction in learning the stories of people who, through luck, circumstance or sheer grit, have ended up in precisely the right job. Australian director Lachlan McLeod’s “Clean” turns out to be just such a story, but here the job is trauma cleaning — that is, swabbing down crime scenes and suicide sites, clearing out inherited or repossessed houses, assisting the mentally and physically disabled with home maintenance and tackling the grimly fascinating phenomenon that is hoarding. Initially it’s unfathomable that anyone’s life experience could make them ideally suited to this extraordinary, specialist profession — much less to develop an entire philosophy around it. But that’s before we get to know Sandra Pankhurst, the founder of Melbourne-based trauma cleaning company Stc.
McLeod’s approach is at first a little coy, implying the film will be less about any one person than about the necessary but often harrowing services Stc provides.
